YULE
On the arrival of the Winter Solstice, we observe Yule.
Also known as Jul, Yule predates the Christmas holiday by thousands of years. Linguists debate the origin of the word of the word Yule. Some suggest the word is derived from “Iul,” the Anglo-Saxon word for wheel. This makes a connection to a Celtic calendar, the Wheel of the Year. However, in the Norse culture, “Jul” refers to the god, Odin. Odin was celebrated during Yule as well.
Yule celebrations included bonfires, decorating with holly, mistletoe and the boughs of evergreen trees, ritual sacrifices, feasts, and gift-giving.
Many Christmas Traditions Borrowed From Yule
Many of the traditions we use at Christmastime were borrowed from Yule traditions of old. Whether they are from myths, feasts, folklore, ancient beliefs, oral stories told, or festivals, we have woven them into the fabric of our modern-day customs. Do you recognize any Christmas traditions borrowed from Yule?
  • The midwinter feast usually lasted 12 days.
  • Vikings decorated evergreen trees with gifts such as food, carvings, and food for the tree spirits to encourage them to return in the spring.
  • Mistletoe combined with a mother’s tears resurrected her son, the God of Light and Goodness, in a Viking myth. The Celts believe Mistletoe possessed healing powers as well and would ward off evil spirits.
  • In Norse tradition, Old Man Winter visited homes to join the festivities. The Viking god, Odin was described as a wanderer with a long white beard and is considered the first Father Christmas.
  • Viking children left their shoes out by the hearth on the eve of the winter solstice with sugar and hay for Odin’s eight-legged horse, Sleipnir.
  • Children traipsed from house to house with gifts of apples and oranges spiked with cloves and resting in baskets lined with evergreen boughs.
  • The Yule log was a whole tree meant to be burned for 12 days in the hearth. The Celts believed the sun stood still during the winter solstice. They thought by keeping the Yule log burning for these 12 days encouraged the sun to move, making the days longer. The largest end would be fed into the hearth, wine poured over it. They lit it with the remains of the previous year’s Yule log. Everyone took turns feeding the length of timber into the fire as it burned. Letting it burn out would bring bad luck.

CANAL STREET RIVER BOUND LANES NOW OPEN!
The Fischer's Jewelry Family welcomes the opening of Canal St. river bound lanes.
The DDD is excited that the river bound lanes of Canal Street have opened and thank Mayor Cantrell and her team for their efforts in getting this done before Christmas. This development comes at a crucial time for Downtown businesses. Merchants have been creative and innovative in operating through the pandemic. As we move into the week before Christmas and a peak time in the holiday season with shopping and Reveillon dining, making sure Downtown is accessible supports their efforts and helps in keeping Downtown a popular destination for the holidays and throughout the year. Along the historic Canal Street corridor are generational businesses such as: Fischer's Jewelry, Rubensteins, Adler's, Palace Café, along with more recent retail additions.

Capitol Hill negotiators sealed a deal on a $900 billion COVID-19 economic relief package, finally delivering long-overdue help to businesses and individuals and providing money to deliver vaccines to a nation eager for them.
The package, expected to draw votes in Congress on Monday, would establish a temporary $300 per week supplemental jobless benefit and a $600 direct stimulus payment to most Americans, along with a new round of subsidies for hard-hit businesses and money for schools, health care providers and renters facing eviction.

"You'd have to go all the way back to just before dawn on March 4, 1226, to see a closer alignment between these objects visible in the night sky."
Jupiter and Saturn Will Align to Create the First "Christmas Star" in Nearly 800 Years

Mark your calendar for Dec 21st for 45 minutes after sunset. The Star of Bethlehem will shine for the first time since 1226.
As 2020 comes to a close, the solar system has decided to grace us with a cosmic Christmas miracle that hasn't been witnessed in nearly 800 years. On Dec. 21 (aka the December solstice), Jupiter and Saturn will align so closely in the night sky that they'll almost appear to collide from our vantage point here on Earth, creating a radiant point of light often referred to as the "Star of Bethlehem" or the "Christmas Star."

To catch a glimpse of the phenomenon for yourself, make sure you have a clear view to the southwest about 45 minutes after sunset. The planets will be at their closest on Dec. 21, but the "Christmas Star" will be visible from anywhere on Earth for about one hour after sunset in the northern hemisphere for the entire fourth week of December. If you're viewing with a telescope, you may also be able to see Jupiter and Saturn's largest moons orbiting them that week. The next Great Conjunction this close won't happen until March 15, 2080, so be sure to take a peek out your window later this month for a brilliant holiday treat.

Ghost & Spirits & Spirits
Gray Line NOLA
New Orleans has been referred to as “The most haunted city in America.” After this nighttime walking tour of the French Quarter, we’ll let you be the judge!
With its colorful history and unique traditions, it is no wonder so many New Orleans homes and taverns have been investigated by paranormal investigators.
You'll visit several haunted sites and hear about the stories featured on The History Channel and The Discovery Channel.
Hear ghostly stories about our haunted hotels and the courthouse where our state supreme court is based. We even visit a former exchange for enslaved people. Each guide has researched these "other spirits" of the Vieux Carre, so no two tours are exactly alike.
Take an exciting look at the relics of voodoo ceremonies, a vampire-slaying kit, and age-old tools of the trade used by mystical and mysterious inhabitants of our city.
Bring your camera. You never know who will want to pose for a picture!
So you thought that was a typo in the tour title of “Ghosts & Spirits & Spirits Tour”, didn’t you? You won’t think that after you visit the other spirits the French Quarter is also famous for - the liquid kind that we’ll make sure you encounter!
All of your friends at French Quarter Festivals, Inc. wish you the best this season!

As we embark upon 2021 we want to say THANK YOU and let you know how much we appreciate you and your continued support. We can't wait to celebrate New Orleans food, music, and culture with you in 2021... but first we invite you to enjoy our Holidays New Orleans Style Virtual Concert Series!  Tune in on YouTube or Facebook Live beginning Sunday at 6pm.

Happy Holidays!

WINTER SOLSTICE
The winter solstice is the shortest day and longest night of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. It occurs annually between December 20th and December 23rd.
The winter solstice is marked by the point at which the North Pole is at its farthest from the sun during its yearly orbit around the sun. It will be approximately 23 degrees away from the sun. Despite the temperature outside, the winter solstice is considered the astronomical beginning of winter. Meteorological winter begins December 1st and lasts until the end of February. It’s marked by the coldest average temperatures during the year.
Depending on how far north a person is in the Northern Hemisphere during the winter, their day can range from 9.5 hours to absolutely no sunrise at all. On the bright side, the days will gradually become longer in the Northern Hemisphere until the summer solstice in June. In the Southern Hemisphere, this same day marks the summer solstice and the Southern Hemisphere’s longest day of the year.
The vernal equinox and the autumnal equinox conventionally mark the beginning of spring and fall respectively and occur when night and day are approximately equal in length.
Around the world since ancient times to modern-day, celebrations, festivals, rituals and holidays recognizing the winter solstice have varied from culture to culture.
NATIONAL FRENCH FRIED SHRIMP DAY
On December 21st, seafood lovers celebrate National French Fried Shrimp Day. Enjoyed all year long, this delicious dish delights many across the country.
Americans eat more shrimp than any other seafood.
The word prawn is used loosely to describe any large shrimp, sometimes known as jumbo shrimp. Some countries use the word prawn exclusively for all shrimp.
Preparing the shrimp for consumption usually involves the removal of the head, shell, tail and sand vein. There are many ways to cook shrimp. Common methods of preparation include baking, boiling, broiling, sauteing, frying, and grilling.
Cooking time is delicate for shrimp and they are at their best when not over cooked.
A healthy food, shrimp is low in calories and high in levels of omega-3s, calcium, iodine, and protein. Shrimp is also known to be considered good for the circulatory system. *The preparation of the shrimp does impact the caloric count.

The building supply business of J. Watts Kearney & Sons was located at 514 South Peters Street, shown here around 1893. Kearney was active in both civic and social organizations and was the founder of Kearney, Blois & Company, a distributor of building materials. In 1871, he went into business with James Clark at 81 Magazine Street, and eventually struck out on his own on South Peters Street. At the same time, he became the secretary of the National Electropoise Company, which is a story unto itself.
His sons joined him in the building materials business in 1893, by which time the elder Kearney was becoming more active in civic causes, serving as a director of the Board of Trade and president of the Prison Reform Association. He was named Postmaster of New Orleans in 1902 but died the following year.
J. Watts Kearney & Sons continued at this address through the 1930s, but by 1940 the building was occupied by William D. Seymour Company, a distributor of welding supplies. The site is currently occupied by the Harrah’s Hotel complex

we have the story of The City of Cairo, a wooden hulled side-wheeler built in Metropolis, Illinois, at Alf Curtis’ shipyard in 1864, and completed in St. Louis the same year at a cost of $175,000 (approximately $2.7 million today). Her pilot was Captain Robert K. Riley for the Memphis Packet Company. She measured 272-feet long by 41-feet wide and 8-feet deep. Her 32-foot paddlewheels were driven by five boilers powering her engines.
The City of Cairo usually made the St. Louis to Memphis route and often extended her operations to New Orleans carrying the mail as well as the usual complement of passengers and cargo. In September 1871 one of her boilers exploded while she was docked, sending people in a mad scramble to abandon the ship, captured here in an illustration by Alfred Waud. While dramatic, the event was quickly placed under control and the repairs completed in due order. However, the uninsured boat was sold to Captain Charles S. Schultz in October 1871. The second illustration below dates from 1872.
Schultz ran The City of Cairo between St. Louis and New Orleans until April 1873 when the boat was seized by creditors at New Orleans and sold by the U.S. Marshalls for $2,100 on June 23, 1873, to Messrs. Fagan and Sinnott. She mysteriously burned near midnight on July 7, 1873 while lying at the wharf in Jefferson City. Captain Colburn of the steam tug Tyler saw the flames coming from the stern of the vessel and towed it downriver to New Orleans near the Crescent sawmill where is sank in 15-feet of water. The ship’s watchman named John Boone was immediately arrested and charged with arson, but the charges were later dismissed when the fire was determined to have started in the ship’s carpenter shop accidentally.
There were three boats named The City of Cairo, an earlier sternwheeler and a later packet boat owned by the Anchor Line that ran between St. Louis and Vicksburg from 1882 until she was destroyed by a freak tornado in St. Louis on May 26, 1896.

On this boat tour, Cajun Christmas traditions come to life on Bayou Bienvenue in St. Bernard Parish.
“It’s really a production, and we have two live storytellers that serve hot chocolate and cookies,” Montelongo said.
Actors lend their talents to a retelling of the Louisiana Christmas tale that’s been around for decades.
“On the boat ride itself, they’re discussing more traditional Christmas activities versus the Cajun Christmas activities, and it’s a really good storyline behind it,” Montelongo said.
The hour-long ride mixes music and a little local history. You might even spot some wildlife along the way.

From a partridge in a pear tree to twelve drummers drumming, downtown Covington will be aglow with holiday images this December with “Covington’s Twelve Days of Christmas” lighted displays.

Twelve lighted silhouettes depicting larger-than-life images from the traditional Old English Christmas carol, 12 Days of Christmas, are exhibited at various locales in the downtown historic district. The public is invited to stroll through the city to view “four calling birds, three French hens,” and other familiar images from the well-known Christmas carol. The images will be illuminated seven days a week from dusk to dawn through January 6.

A new holiday tradition in Covington, this family-friendly activity appeals to all ages. In a show of community spirit befitting the holiday season, the public is cordially invited to share their Covington’s Twelve Days of Christmas adventure on social media, tagging the City of Covington, City of Covington-Office of Cultural Arts & Events, and St. Tammany Parish Tourist and Convention Commission (Louisiana Northshore) to spread holiday cheer.

announcements
the first time in 41 years, New Orleans will not have Mardi Gras parades

Metairie's Mardi Gras season parades likely postponed to Memorial Day weekend

The proposed new parade schedule is:
  • May 28 - Excalibur and Symphony
  • May 29 - Argus, Madhatters, Kings and Centurions
  • May 30 - Athena, Pandora and Atlas.

This will help us organize ways for folks to participate no matter where you are. Recruit your neighbors!

The Westbank Krewe of House Floats (JP on the best bank, this is for you)

PRIORITY UPDATE: Congratulations, Fleet! As of this post you have grown to over 4600 people and I couldn't be more flattered that so many folks like my silly Mardi Gras idea enough to turn it into such a phenomenon. In order to make sure that this group is a useful resource for all hands, we are implementing some more changes to better manage information. (Please read the whole dang post - I know these are long but we have a lot of ground to cover.)
1st - In order to facilitate better info sharing, posting in the discussion will be closed to everyone except Captains and other approved volunteers. You'll still be able to comment and ask questions but we want to make sure vital information doesn't get lost.

2nd - I have created a public page @kreweofhousefloats (https://www.facebook.com/kreweofhousefloats/) and an event for Mardi Gras 2021 where folks can chat. If you just want basic information, it will be easiest to find it there as announcements are made. This will be a great place to direct your friends who are curious but not necessarily planning to participate in decorating.

3rd - Moderators and I will be cleaning up the discussion page to make sure everyone can find their subkrewes, vendor info, planning updates, and more info about how you can volunteer and participate as much or as little as you feel like. I ask that you take planning discussions to the subkrewe pages and leave this page clean for krewe-wide info. YOU HAVE 24 HOURS so if there is info you want to save do so ASAP. This group is growing very quickly and we are literally building the ship as she sails so we will adjust as necessary facilitate easy access to the latest and greatest.

4th - For folks still getting caught up, I started this group on a whim less than a week ago and did not expect this response. I have had so, so many lovely and generous people offer up their time and skills for free to help make this happen and I hope to introduce you to them all once things calm down a bit. The spirit of New Orleans is truly a force to be reckoned with and I am merely along for the ride and happy to serve. Again, I request your patience as we are just regular folks with jobs, families, and other responsibilities that don't go away just because we accidentally started a Mardi Gras krewe.
WWOZ will still be celebrating, as always, on our airwaves, though. Hear those classic Mardi Gras songs and sounds from Twelfth Night through Mardi Gras Day (Feb. 16, 2021) at 90.7 FM or wwoz.org. 💜💚💛"

I know it may be hard to think about the holidays right now - between the virus, financial strain and political unrest it's hard to get a handle on the fact that they are suddenly upon us. Celebrations will be much smaller and closer to home, and for many of us gift giving will be limited to intimate groups of friends and family. For me and Kerry, we'll be driving instead of flying in hopes of staying healthy and keeping our family safe. Christmas morning will be the two of us and my mother while we zoom with the rest of the family who would normally gather together to open gifts and enjoy the day with food and wine.

With all of that in mind, my hope in general is that the holidays will be less about conspicuous consumption and more about small and thoughtful; less about the maddening rush and spending frenzy and more about slowing down to enjoy the moment. That is the case for me personally, there is something about the chaos in our world right now that is helping me be more focused on the small things I would like to give this year - even if I'm way behind in acquiring them!

That is how we tend to approach the holidays at Swirl - we don't do large gift baskets wrapped in cellophane and filled with things that no one wants to eat or drink. We like to focus on the quality of the items, not the quantity and wrap them up in something elegant and pretty.

Shopping local is especially important right. Please consider purchasing from your neighborhood businesses for the holidays - we all gratefully appreciate your support!

Small gifts or stocking stuffers start as low as $5.99 while splurge items can go up to $250 with so much amazing stuff in between! Here's a little run down of some of our favorites and keep an eye on our social media pages for new inventory and gift ideas!
- Books:  we've done the hard part - sifted through all of the reviews, checked out the quality of the information and selected some great books on agave spirits, Whisky, Grower Champagne, cocktails, wine journals, Wine Folly's Master Guide and my personal favorite - Spritz, Italy's iconic aperitivo.
- German glassware: we have a nice assortment of sizes and shapes from Spieglau plus some American made whisky, brandy and coupes for your cocktails and spirits.
- Cocktail ingredients: assorted bitters (artisanal and the usual suspects)Italian & Croatian maraschino cherries, olives, rimming salts and more
- Local art:  creative New Orleans themed originals on the walls by Shaun Aleman
- Coravin Model One:  the ultimate wine preservation system
- Edible gifts: artisanal cheeses, meats, crackers and locally made chocolates by Bittersweet Confections
- Gift Cards: a great option if you don't know someone's taste, we wrap them up pretty for you! And if you are short on time you can purchase an EGIFT Card online.
- Wine made by locals: New Orleans locally owned Vending Machine Winery and Moises Vineyards make amazing wines in California & Oregon
- And of course a carefully curated selection of wine, bubbles, sake and spirits from $10-$250!

Welcome to the Battle in the Big Easy! The 2020 R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl match-up has been set! Louisiana Tech, out of Conference USA, takes on Georgia Southern, hailing from the Sun Belt Conference. The stage is set for the 20th edition of this bowl game and the 15th year where R+L Carriers serves as its official sponsor.
Here’s a bit of insight into both teams.
Louisiana Tech – Conference USA
The Bulldogs return to the Mercedes-Benz Superdome five years after their 47-28 victory over the Arkansas State Red Wolves. Head coach Skip Holtz hopes to continue the team’s already impressive legacy, having the longest active bowl-winning streak in the U.S. Currently, their season record of 5-4 and conference record of 4-2 make them a solid team to represent Conference USA.
Georgia Southern – Sun Belt Conference
The 2020 R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl marks the first appearance for Georgia Southern in this titular bowl game. However, the Eagles lead in strong with what will be their third straight bowl appearance. Third-year head coach Chad Lunsford takes his team to the field with a 7-5 overall record and 4-4 record representing the Sun Belt Conference.
It’s sure to a rumble in the Big Easy!

The Madisonville Market, put on by the Northshore Maker’s Market Foundation, is more than just a farmer’s market. It’s a place where the community can interact with local artisans, crafters, farmers, chefs and more as they share their passion for making handmade goods, homegrown produce and prepared foods.
The weekly market takes place each Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the Madisonville Park & Playground, located on Pine Street near the 1000 block (closest cross street is Jahncke Ave.). Over 40 vendors offer hot and ready-to-eat foods, chocolates and candies, cookies and baked goods, jams and jellies, sauces and seasonings, flowers, plants, eggs, cheeses, fruits, veggies, local honey and selections by local vintners. Also, you'll find original art, handmade jewelry and accessories, hand-dyed fabrics, hand-sewn leather goods, wooden creations, soaps and body care products, health and wellness items, home decor items, baby clothes and hand sewn masks.
Shopping aside, families will enjoy the nearby playground, and be sure to look for on-site artists and massage therapists when you're ready to take a break from your shopping. There's also a concession stand on the ballfield with bottled water and sodas.

The non-profit Northshore Maker’s Market Foundation partners with local government, businesses, and other non-profit organizations to fund local projects such as the restoration of historic sites in Madisonville, and the education of young adults ages 14-24 in the arts, trades, agriculture, and entrepreneurship through donations, fundraisers, and mentorship efforts, all with an approach of attaining sustainable solutions for healthier living.
