Lights for Lions
DROP OFF YOUR DISCARDED STRANDS OF HOLIDAY LIGHTS AT THE ZOO!
Most holiday lights are not bio-degradable and are dangerous to animals if they get tangled in the strands. You can take action and make a positive impact on the natural world by recycling your lights and keeping them from going to a landfill.
Audubon Zoo will collect holiday string lights for recycling this holiday season. All proceeds from Audubon’s Lights for Lions recycling program will support the Wildlife Conservation Network’s Lion Recovery Fund. Lion populations have declined by half in just a quarter century. Their loss signals the loss of the wild in Africa.

After record-high day for coronavirus, more vaccine doses heading to Louisiana
A day after Louisiana saw a record-high increase in confirmed coronavirus cases, Gov. John Bel Edwards announced that the vaccine will be available to residents 70 years old and older next week.
Edwards announced that Louisiana will be receiving "sufficient" doses of the Moderna vaccine next week, which will allow the state to start giving the vaccine to those in the next priority group.

Some frontline health care workers and nursing home residents and staff have already received the vaccine. Those people are included in the 1A group of the vaccine plan.
The additional vaccine doses will allow the state to begin vaccinating more people in the 1B group, which includes ambulatory and outpatient health care workers and people 70 years old and older.

Drive-By Tableaux de Jeanne d'Arc presented by Krewe de Jeanne d'Arc/Joan of Arc Project, January 6, 2021- 6-9pm at Behrman Memorial Park

Celebrating St. Joan of Arc’s birthday and Twelfth Night, Krewe de Jeanne d’Arc presents the Tableaux de Jeanne d’Arc, a medieval-themed live performance drive-by event, inspired by Joan's life and legacy. In a multitude of tableaux we tell the story of Joan from her childhood as a shepherdess to her sainthood. You will see most of the props, characters, performance groups, and music from our annual walking parade as you drive by. Look for some new vignettes as well!
While you wait in line you'll be able to log in and listen to the story of our parade or compete in our Joan Quiz Bowl. We anticipate wait times of approximately 40 minutes so you'll have time to do both!
We are committed to keeping both krewe members and the public safe. We will follow all city and state coronavirus guidelines. All participants will be wearing face masks and will keep 6 feet or more apart. There will be no close contact between people. No throws will be distributed. All viewers must remain in their vehicle wearing masks. All vehicles must have a ticket.

Mardi Gras season kicks off with stationary Joan of Arc parade in Algiers
the Krewe de Jeanne d'Arc will produce a socially distanced, drive-by event to celebrate the 15th century martyr’s 609th birthday. From 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., cars will wind slowly past a series of tableau performances in Behrman Memorial Park, 2529 Gen. Meyer Ave., in Algiers. Tickets go on sale New Year's Day.
Tableau is a more-or-less extinct art form, in which actors assume poses as if they were figures in a painting. It has an important role in the history of Carnival, however, since the first Comus parade in 1857 was conceived as a series of rolling tableaux.

Most of the familiar features of the parade will be present, Joan of Arc co-captain Antoinette de Alteriis said. The trumpeters, drummers and bagpipers, the confetti cannon, the knights, sheep, jesters and big birthday cake will all be present and accounted for. An altar-style stage will replace St. Louis Cathedral, where the parade usually pauses to receive a blessing.
Unfortunately, the Amazon marching group, the NOLA Chorus Girl (who usually costume as angels) and live horses will be absent this year, de Alteriis said. But, she promises, the teenage saint’s stylized burning at the stake, attended by the Muff-A-Lotta’s dance troupe, will be particularly stirring.
Stirring, and as coronavirus-conscious as possible. De Alteriis said that all tableau participants will be separated from one another by a minimum of 6 feet (unless they are in family pods), and the car passengers will glide by at an even greater distance. Motorists are encouraged to keep their windows rolled up or to wear masks as they pass through the attraction. Foot traffic is not permitted.

The Joan of Arc stationary parade will pioneer a few "stationary parade" innovations, including offering a book for sale that explains the history of the saint and the parade, plus a drive-thru playlist of Joan-centric music and an online Joan of Arc trivia game to accompany the activity.
De Alteriis said that, under the circumstances, the krewe could have just skipped Carnival 2021, but the tableau performance “gives our members a high point after a horrendous 10 months.”
“We want to usher in 2021 with an artistic creation that will bring joy,” she said.
Tickets, which are $10, will be available beginning Friday, Jan. 1, on Eventbrite. Search for Tableaux de Jeanne d’Arc.

New Year, New Smoke-free You!
Smoking Cessation Trust Shares Quit Tips for Louisiana Smokers

NEW ORLEANS  – As 2020 comes to an end and many people begin to make their New Year’s resolutions, one resolution that consistently appears at the top of many lists is “quitting smoking”—a resolution the Smoking Cessation Trust wholeheartedly supports.

Louisiana’s smoking rate is currently 21.9% (down from 23.1%). The number of adult smokers in the U.S. has also declined to 14.0% (down from 17.1%), demonstrating that while Louisiana is making progress, it still has a long way to go in closing the smoking gap.

“The Smoking Cessation Trust, along with other dedicated cessation programs and providers across Louisiana, has helped contribute to a steady decline in smoking by providing ongoing education, free products and services, that are helping smokers quit their nicotine addiction,” said Mike Rogers, CEO, Smoking Cessation Trust Management Services. “To date, the Trust has managed to help over 113,000 members on their journey to quitting. It is our hope that even more smokers will join us in 2021.”

Smoking is the leading cause of preventable death in our country, killing more than 480,000 Americans, including 7,200 Louisianans annually. It also results in more than 41,000 deaths from secondhand smoke exposure, since smoking doesn’t just kill, it can also lead to long-term health issues which, during the current COVID-19 pandemic, is especially problematic. Nicotine dependence, which is both physical and mental, is currently the most common form of chemical dependence in the United States.
While quitting is hard, there are immediate benefits for those of all ages who stop smoking, including return to heart rate and blood pressure normality, improved circulation, improved lung function, and improved smell and taste. Long term benefits to non-smokers include reducing the chance of dying prematurely from smoking related diseases by 60%, a lower risk of stroke, and improvement in overall physical appearance.

As 2021 approaches, the Smoking Cessation Trust reminds Louisiana smokers to ring in the New Year tobacco-free by following these quit steps from the CDC:

Step 1: Set a Quit Date
Pick a date—like the start of the New Year—to quit smoking. Really think about your quit date. Avoid choosing a day where you know you will be busy, stressed, or tempted to smoke (for example, a night out with friends, days where you may smoke at work). This will give you enough time to prepare.

Step 2: Tell Family & Friends that You are Trying to Quit
Telling family, friends and coworkers about a quit attempt has been shown to increase a quitter’s chances of success. By sharing what kind of support a quitter is looking for–either encouragement or accountability–your loved ones can be involved in the process. The more people a smoker has in their corner, the more likely they are to succeed. Have a spouse or friend who wants to quit too? Do it together!

Step 3: Plan for Challenges While Quitting
Stopping smoking is not just about dealing with nicotine cravings. Many smokers need to work through the habitual tendencies surrounding cigarette use. By going to a group workshop (in-person or via telehealth) run by a certified tobacco treatment specialist (“CTTS”), quitters can learn how to work through cravings and triggers like stress, boredom, and nervousness without reaching for a cigarette. Many major hospitals and clinics across the state of Louisiana offer cessation counseling (for a full list, contact the Smoking Cessation Trust).

Step 4: Remove Cigarettes, e-Cigarettes and Other Forms of Tobacco from Your Home, Car and Work
You will be tempted to smoke during your quit. Stay strong; you can do it! Removing things that remind you of smoking will get you ready to quit. A few good ideas are:

●        Throw away all your cigarettes (and e-cigarettes). Throw away your matches, lighters, and ashtrays. Remember the ashtray and lighter in your car.
●        Don't save one pack of cigarettes “just in case.” Keeping even one pack just makes it easier to start smoking again.
●        Remove the smell of cigarettes from your life. Make things clean and fresh at work‚ in your car‚ and at home. Clean your drapes and clothes. Shampoo your car interior. You will be less tempted to light up if you don't smell smoke.
●        Have your dentist clean your teeth to get rid of smoking stains. Your teeth will look amazing. When you quit smoking, they will always look that way.

Step 5: Talk with Your Doctor about Nicotine Replacement Therapy or Pharmaceutical Help
Quitters should discuss cessation treatments with their doctor. The Smoking Cessation Trust provides access to all recommended cessation methods through provider partners across Louisiana; knowing an individual’s medical history, the doctor can suggest and prescribe pharmaceuticals or a nicotine replacement therapy that will work best for each smoker. Doctors can also talk about the benefits of quitting and what to expect.

NATIONAL THANK GOD IT’S MONDAY DAY
National Thank God It’s Monday Day encourages us to celebrate the first Monday of the new year with vigor and energy.
Not only does the observance focus on the first Monday in January, but on every Monday throughout the year. Mondays are often full of new beginnings. New jobs often start on Mondays. Couples usually marry on weekends and a Monday represents the first work week of their new lives together. Many federal holidays take place on Mondays and therefore special occasions frequently take place on Mondays throughout the year.
Besides the scheduled events, many random events occur on a Monday. When Monday repeats between 52 and 53 times out of the year, important things will happen. It’s 1/7th of our life. Blaming Monday for our woes (traffic) doesn’t improve our personal track record in life (being late). Stop shaming Monday and look at what Monday has to offer.
  • Freshly brewed coffee to keep us perky
  • Opportunity for a bright future
  • 52 chances to see a beautiful sunrise
  • A new week share your talents with the world
  • 52 opportunities to teach someone a new skill that will better their lives
  • Each Monday offers the potential of meeting new people
NATIONAL SPAGHETTI DAY
National Spaghetti Day on January 4th offers an opportunity to pick your sauce and add it to that long, thin cylindrical pasta of Italian and Sicilian origin. Usually made from semolina flour, this pasta has been a worldwide favorite for ages and loved by millions.
There are a variety of different pasta dishes based on spaghetti, and the sauce determines most of them. Some examples include spaghetti ala Carbonara, garlic and oil, tomato sauce, meat sauce, bolognese, Alfredo sauce, clam sauce or other sauces. We traditionally serve spaghetti dishes topped with grated hard cheeses such as Pecorino Romano, Parmesan and Grana Padano.
The word spaghetti is plural for the Italian word spaghetto, which is a diminutive of spago, meaning “thin string” or “twine.”
American restaurants offered Spaghetti around the end of the 19th century as Spaghetti Italienne (which is believed to have consisted of noodles cooked past al dente and a mild tomato sauce flavored with easily found spices and vegetables such as cloves, bay leaves, and garlic). Decades later, cooks added oregano and basil to many recipes.
Spaghetti Origins
There is a significant debate on the origin of spaghetti. However, we do know that pasta has been consumed for many, many years. There are records in the Jerusalem Talmud of itrium, a kind of boiled dough, commonly available in Palestine from the 3rd to 5th centuries AD. A 9th-century Arab dictionary describes itriyyaas as string-like shapes made of semolina and dried before cooking. In an 1154 writing for the Norman King of Sicily, itriyya is mentioned being manufactured and exported from Norman Sicily. Dried pasta became popular in the 14th and 15th centuries due to its easy storage. People were able to store the dried pasta in ships when exploring the New World. A century later, pasta was present around the globe during the voyages of discovery. (Wikipedia)
On Top of Spaghetti
In March of 2009, the world record for the largest bowl of spaghetti was set and then reset in March of 2010 when a Garden Grove California Buca di Beppo restaurant successfully filled a swimming pool with more than 13,780 pounds of pasta.
Sung to the tune of “On Top of Old Smoky,” the fun children’s song, “On Top of Spaghetti,” was written and originally sung by folk singer Tom Glazer with the Do-Re-Mi Children’s Chorus in 1963.
“On top of spaghetti,
All covered with cheese,
I lost my poor meatball,
When somebody sneezed.
It rolled off the table,
And on to the floor,
And then my poor meatball,
Rolled out of the door.”

Yesterday marked the 62nd Anniversary of the first televised experiments of Dr. Momus Alexander Morgus, the fictional mad scientist whose work has entertained generations of New Orleans TV viewers — known to him as "friends of science."
Morgus the Magnificent, as he was known, was created and performed by actor and radio star Sid Noel and made his debut on WWL-TV on January. 3, 1959, 62 years ago. His program, called "House of Shock," was said to have originated from his lab above the old city ice house and featured experiments wrapped around segments of horror movies.
Morgus became an instant hit for the station, which had signed on just two years earlier. His exploits, presented by the Momus Alexander Morgus Institute (M.A.M.I.), aimed to carry out the mission of what he called the Higher Order, a secret society dedicated to preserving and elevating the planet through science. Morgus' experiments and inventions always seemed to backfire on him by the end of each episode. He was ably assisted by Chopsley, a hulking, mute figure who wore a hood to cover up some unfortunate plastic surgery performed by Morgus.
Also ever-present was E.R.I.C., a former assistant whose brain was preserved in the form of a talking skull. The trio even starred in a 1962 feature film, "The Wacky World of Dr. Morgus." Morgus later televised his experiments on WDSU in the 1970s, WGNO in the 1980s (with episodes that were also nationally syndicated) and WVUE in the 2000s. Sid Noel Rideau (Morgus) passed away in late August 2020.

The Madisonville Market, put on by the Northshore Maker’s Market Foundation, is more than just a farmer’s market. It’s a place where the community can interact with local artisans, crafters, farmers, chefs and more as they share their passion for making handmade goods, homegrown produce and prepared foods.
The weekly market takes place each Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the Madisonville Park & Playground, located on Pine Street near the 1000 block (closest cross street is Jahncke Ave.). Over 40 vendors offer hot and ready-to-eat foods, chocolates and candies, cookies and baked goods, jams and jellies, sauces and seasonings, flowers, plants, eggs, cheeses, fruits, veggies, local honey and selections by local vintners. Also, you'll find original art, handmade jewelry and accessories, hand-dyed fabrics, hand-sewn leather goods, wooden creations, soaps and body care products, health and wellness items, home decor items, baby clothes and hand sewn masks.
Shopping aside, families will enjoy the nearby playground, and be sure to look for on-site artists and massage therapists when you're ready to take a break from your shopping. There's also a concession stand on the ballfield with bottled water and sodas.

The non-profit Northshore Maker’s Market Foundation partners with local government, businesses, and other non-profit organizations to fund local projects such as the restoration of historic sites in Madisonville, and the education of young adults ages 14-24 in the arts, trades, agriculture, and entrepreneurship through donations, fundraisers, and mentorship efforts, all with an approach of attaining sustainable solutions for healthier living.

The Intergalactic Krewe Of Chewbacchus Embarks On 11th Annual Adventure
The Intergalactic Krewe of Chewbacchus will embark on its eleventh annual adventure, this time navigating the impossible terrain of socially distanced parading during a global pandemic. Life finds a way. On that day, The Sacred Drunken Wookiee will awaken from his season of slumber to present the theme DON’T PANIC! THE HITCHHIKER’S GUIDE TO THE NEW REALITY – VOLUME ONE.
Within the week leading up to VOLUME ONE, the krewe will release “The Guide” in the form of an online PDF brochure, which will include a map to the locations of where the devoted subkrewes of Chewbacchus will be stationed at homes and businesses around the city of New Orleans on January 23, 2021. Each station will represent a “chapter” of the guide. Fans and devotees of The Sacred Drunken Wookiee will be able to visit these stations on that date and collect the wonderful handmade throws of our subkrewes and marvel at the beautiful costumes and glorious contraptions of our members in a socially distanced manner. ALL CHEWBACCHUS MEMBERS WILL BE APPROPRIATELY MASKED, AND ADHERING TO CURRENT SOCIAL DISTANCE AND OUTDOOR GATHERING GUIDELINES. In return, it is expected that fans and spectators will return that respect and be masked and socially distanced as well. To emphasize a mindfulness to the safety and health of our members, The Overlords of Chewbacchus hereby issue the decree that no member of the public visiting a station of our subkrewes will be entertained with the gift of a throw if not masked and respecting current social distance guidelines.
Furthermore, in addition to the opportunity to still witness the splendor of our subkrewes and chance to acquire their beautiful handmade throws, DON’T PANIC! THE HITCHHIKER’S GUIDE TO THE NEW REALITY – VOLUME ONE will include a multimedia side quest for rare, one of a kind, artifacts of The Sacred Drunken Wookiee. Those artifacts will be found at randomly selected subkrewe stations and will reveal clues to the location of a prized collection of rare treasures, a Chewbacchus merchandise prize package, a lifetime membership to the Intergalactic Krewe of Chewbacchus, and the Royal title “Ultimate Survivor of the New Reality.”
Tickets are now available online to purchase, but get them fast seating is limited.
