10-digit dialing will be mandatory in Metro New Orleans beginning Oct. 24
10-digit dialing will be mandatory in Metro New Orleans beginning Oct. 24
|
Seven-digit dialing for local calls in Metro New Orleans and parts of Southwest Louisiana will be replaced by 10-digit dialing starting Oct. 24.
The Federal Communications Commission announced the move is due to the implementation of the National Suicide Prevention and Mental Health Crisis Lifeline.
Certain area codes around the country, including the 504 (Metro New Orleans) and 337 (Lafayette, Lake Charles and New Iberia) area codes in Louisiana, will change to mandatory 10-digit dialing for local calls meaning you must dial ten digits (area code + telephone number) for all local calls.
Once the change goes into effect, the FCC says any local calls, with 504 or 337 area codes, dialed with only seven digits may not connect, and a recording will inform you that your call cannot be completed as dialed. You must hang up and dial again using the area code and the seven-digit number.
The change allows the FCC to implement a nationwide, three-digit suicide prevention hotline. In 2020, the agency established "988" as an easy way to reach suicide prevention and mental health counselors, similar to "911" for emergencies and "311" for local government services.
To help facilitate the creation of "988", area codes that use "988" as local exchange, or the first three digits of a seven-digit phone number, will need to use 10-digit dialing.

Traffic Advisory: City Announces Temporary French Quarter Road Closures to Accommodate Infrastructure Upgrades
|
NEW ORLEANS — Beginning on Monday, Oct. 25 at 8 a.m., weather permitting, City of New Orleans Department of Public Works contractor, Hard Rock Construction, will temporarily close the 300 and 400 blocks of Bourbon Street, as well as the 800 blocks of Conti Street, to vehicular traffic in order to accommodate utility upgrades at Bourbon and Conti streets and permanent paving from utility work that was completed earlier this year at Bourbon and Bienville streets.
Public safety is our priority; the temporary closures will be in place through 5 p.m. on Sat. Oct. 30, and all businesses remain open and accessible throughout construction.
This work is part of a $2.4M full-depth reconstruction (replacement of the roadway and underground utilities) project in the 700 block of Conti between Bourbon and Royal streets. To date, crews have replaced and upsized the existing drain lines and catch basins, replaced the existing water lines, repaired and/or replaced the existing sewer lines and completed the new concrete roadway and granite curbs. Entergy Gas and Entergy Electric have replaced the existing low pressure gas lines with high pressure gas lines and replaced and/or repaired the existing underground electrical duct banks.
Currently, crews are constructing sidewalks and Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant ramps at the intersections of Royal and Conti streets and Bourbon and Conti streets.
The 700 block of Conti Street project, which was designed by Mott McDonald, LLC is anticipated to run through November 2021. Project partners include Entergy Electric, Entergy Gas, Cox Communications and AT&T.
The 600 block of Conti Street between Royal and Chartres Street was originally included as part of this project; however, it has been removed and will be bid out through a separate project in spring 2022. Entergy Gas and Entergy Electric are in the process of completing their utilities upgrades in this block.
Since May 2018, the Department of Public Works has completed 99 projects with an estimated value of $282M. Today, 69 projects are under construction with an estimated value of more than $600M.
Questions about this project or RoadworkNOLA should be directed to 504.658.ROAD (7623)

Children’s Hospital to open Metairie emergency room
|
Children’s Hospital plans to open its new pediatric emergency room in Metairie on Monday.
A grand opening with a tour of the facility is scheduled at 10 a.m. at 4545 Veterans Blvd.
The hospital announced in April that construction had begun on a $4 million, 11,000-square-foot facility at the corner of Clearview Parkway and Veterans Boulevard.
The 11-bed ER will serve children from birth through age 21 with emergency services as well as scheduled imaging tests, a news release said.
The project brings 64 new jobs to Jefferson Parish, the release said.

SUMMER HOURS: Audubon Golf Clubhouse Food Waste Collection, every Monday 4:30-6:00pm
The Golf Club at Audubon Park
6500 Magazine St
New Orleans, LA 70118
|
Duration: 1 hr 30 min
Public
Monday, we will collect your frozen food scraps on the veranda of the Audubon Clubhouse, the Golf Club at Audubon Park during our new summer hours from 4:30 - 6:00PM.
This free residential food waste collection will be every Monday from 4:30 - 6:00PM.
Please bring your FROZEN food scraps (no meat, no bones, no dairy) to the bins on the veranda between 4:30-6:00pm.
Please observe program hours.
Please do NOT drop off early or late.
Please do not leave scraps if you do not see bins.
Please bring your FROZEN fruit and vegetable scraps, eggshells, nut shells, tea bags, coffee grounds, plain pasta or bread.
Bring your food waste in a paper or compostable bag or bring your scraps in a reusable container.
We will have bins for you to empty your frozen scraps into. If you do not see bins, please do NOT just leave your scraps.
Seriously. They will cancel the program if you do.
NO MEAT, NO DAIRY, NO OILY FOODS, NO BONES.
Why FROZEN? Scraps must be frozen, to avoid potential smells, roaches and rodents. Our volunteers thank you!
Also, freezing your scraps means no smell, fruit flies, roaches or rodents for you at home PLUS freezing breaks down the cell membrane, speeding up the decomposition process.
Not everyone is ready to build and maintain a compost bin in their backyard or have a worm bin in their home - that's fine. You can still help reduce the amount of food waste going into landfills by participating in this free, easy & convenient food waste collection program!
DO NOT drop off any food waste outside the scheduled times.

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO
TIPS FOR SURVIVING THE NEW ORLEANS NIGHTMARE
-
Review our Scary Safe guidelines to keep your friends, yourself, and our employees protected.
-
Make sure to purchase a Fast Pass or Skip the Line ticket. These tickets grant you entry into our expedited queues, so you will spend less time waiting in line! A limited number are sold each night so get yours today.
- Outside, take as many photos as you would like with monsters and other entertainers - feel free to share them on social media! Grab a snack and drink. While inside, no food, drinks, bottles, recording devices, flash photography or flashlights are allowed.
- No prop or handheld items are allowed inside. If you come in costume, please leave your accessories in your car.
- Bring a clear bag! To limit touching of personal items, only clear bags not exceeding 4.5”x6.5” will be allowed.
- Mistreating any New Orleans Nightmare performer will result in you being sent home.
- Wearing heels or flip flops is discouraged as they are the shoes we find the most in our lost and found.
PLAN AHEAD
GET YOUR TICKETS IN ADVANCE
- If you purchase your ticket in advance you will skip the Box Office all together.
-
On peak nights we highly recommend you purchase a Fast Pass or Skip the Line ticket as this will greatly reduce your wait in line or eliminate it altogether.
WHAT TO EXPECT
- Upon arriving at the New Orleans Nightmare Haunted House, if you have already purchased your tickets, proceed directly through security, and then to your designated entrance - General Admission, Fast Pass, or Skip the Line. There is no need to exchange your print-at-home-ticket at the ticket booth; the ticket you printed is your ticket and includes admission to both of the attractions on-site at New Orleans Nightmare Haunted House.
- If you purchased your tickets in advance, expect to feel good about that decision as you pass the line at the box office and proceed to our entry lines.
-
If you purchased a Fast Pass or Skip the Line ticket expect to feel even better as you skip the General Admission line altogether.
- No groups larger than 10 will be sent through together. If you arrived with more than 10 in your party, you will be split into smaller groups to enter.
- Final note: on our busy weekend nights and weekday nights closer to Halloween, we can sell out. To ensure your entry, purchase tickets online in advance; you can do this any time during our season, up to the day you plan to attend. Those of you that are tech savvy can even purchase your tickets online from your smartphone on your way to the haunted house! Your tickets are emailed to you immediately, you can pull them up on your smartphone screen and we can scan them at the entrance right on your phone. If you have an online ticket in hand, you will get in that night. However, in the event of a sellout night, our on-site box office will close early. Don't worry though, we stay until thelast ticketed patron in line is through both haunted houses!

NATIONAL GREASY FOODS DAY
Those watching the scale beware. Augment the diet for National Greasy Foods Day on October 25th.
Although not the healthiest of choices, every once in a while, it is okay to enjoy some greasy food. From fried chicken, pizza, nachos, and french fries to bacon and hash brown potatoes, we all like a treat in our regular diet.
Cooking oil types include:
Olive oil – Palm oil – Soybean oil – Canola oil – Pumpkin oil – Corn oil – Sunflower oil – Safflower oil – Peanut oil – Grapeseed oil – Sesame oil – Agran oil – Rice bran oil – Other vegetable oils – Butter and lard.
Oil may be flavored with aromatic flavorings such as herbs, chilies, or garlic.
Greasy foods can be prepared with healthier oils and with much less than average amounts of oil used when cooking, making them much healthier choices.
For the educators and homeschoolers, National Day Calendar tested an assignment in our own classroom and made the material ready for you to use.

This is the old Greyhound station located, I believe, on Rampart Street in downtown New Orleans. This picture is of the Teche Transfer Company which later became Teche Greyhound Lines, then Southeastern Greyhound and finally just Greyhound.
Judging from the style of the busses and the men's clothes I think it dates back to the late 20s or very early 30s

Rebirth Brass Band at

3940 Thalia St.
New Orleans, LA 70125

Duration: 2 hr

Whether seen on HBO’s Treme or at their legendary Tuesday night gig at The Maple Leaf, Grammy-winning Rebirth Brass Band is a true New Orleans institution. Formed in 1983 by the Frazier brothers, the band has evolved from playing the streets of the French Quarter to playing festivals and stages all over the world. While committed to upholding the tradition of brass bands, they’ve also extended themselves into the realms of funk and hip-hop to create their signature sound. “Rebirth can be precise whenever it wants to,” says The New York Times, “but it’s more like a party than a machine. It’s a working model of the New Orleans musical ethos: as long as everybody knows what they’re doing, anyone can cut loose.” In the wake of the sometimes- stringent competition amongst New Orleans brass bands, Rebirth is the undisputed leader of the pack, and they show no signs of slowing down.

The Mortuary Haunted Mansion
Open
The fact that The Mortuary Haunted Mansion sits next to a cemetery and was once a funeral home is already scary enough. Now, add creepy creatures, and you really have a frightening scene.
This year, the haunted house explores a new theme called “Inferno,” with the website describing the plot as “a supernatural event leading to the two men’s disappearance over New Orleans.”
Source: The Mortuary Haunted House
The popular Mid-City attraction was originally scheduled to open on Sept. 18. After Hurricane Ida, the haunted attraction postponed its opening date.
The Mortuary says it will follow all safety guidelines established by the City of New Orleans concerning COVID prevention. At this time, that includes proof of at least one dose of an approved COVID vaccine or negative PCR test within 72 hours. All visitors will also be required to wear a mask inside the attraction.
The Mortuary Haunted Mansion opens for tours starting Oct. 1 through Oct. 31, with an additional date on Nov. 6. General admission tickets for the attraction start at $25.00, plus additional fees for VIP Fast Passes or VIP Frequent Fear Passes.

Get out your lederhosen, spruce up your dirndls and prepare to eat and drink German style — It’s time for Oktoberfest at Middendorf’s!
We hope you can join us!
- Oktober 21, 2021 - November 11, 2021
- Every Wednesday & Thursday at Middendorf's Manchac and Middendorf's Slidell
- Meals served all day, lunch and dinner, 10:30am-9:00pm (while supplies last)
Middendorf's
Physical Address:, 30160 Hwy 51 S., Akers, LA 70421
|
This year, Oktoberfest will be every Wednesday and Thursday, Oktober 20, 2021 through November 11, 2021, at Middendorf’s Manchac and Middendorf’s Slidell. This will be our 14th year of Oktoberfest featuring authentic German appetizers, entrees, desserts and beer.
The German expertise comes from Middendorf’s Owner and European Master Chef Horst Pfeifer who is a native of Germany. He grew up in the hamlet of Bächlingen where his family still lives today. The village was established in 950 AD and boasts a grand population of around 150 people.
“It’s an honor to share my German heritage with everyone through the recipes that I grew up with,” said Horst Pfeifer. “I think Louis Middendorf would have been so happy to see Oktoberfest here at the restaurant. Louis was also from Germany, and he founded Middendorf’s back in 1934 with his wife, Josie. It’s funny because Middendorf’s is so widely known for seafood that a lot of people don’t realize that Middendorf is actually a German name.”
During Oktoberfest, there is a different German meal available each week for lunch and dinner, 10:30am-9:00pm (while supplies last). If you dine with us all 6 weeks, you will receive an Oktoberfest Prize! Punch cards must be punched each week and turned in on the final week. Get all the details on the Oktoberfest menu later in this newsletter.
The full regular menu is also available for guests so those who can’t possibly come to Middendorf’s without partaking of our “World Famous Thin Fried Catfish” can rest assured, the catfish and other beloved seafood dishes aren’t going anywhere.
Authentic German music is also in store for Oktoberfest. At Middendorf’s Slidell, the talented Al DiMarco will be back to play the accordion in the evenings, starting at 4:30pm. Over at Middendorf’s Manchac, Heinz Pfeifer (Horst’s brother) should make his triumphant return for the last two weeks of Oktoberfest, November 3-4 and November 10-11 (as long as the international travel rules don’t change again). Heinz will fly-in from Germany to entertain guests with his accordion and conversation.
Catch all the authentic German food, music and fun during Oktoberfest at Middendorf’s. It’s every Wednesday and Thursday at Middendorf’s Manchac and Middendorf’s Slidell, Oktober 6, 2021 through November 11, 2021.

LIVE MUSIC FROM THE BRASS-A-HOLICS at the Jazz Playhouse
Since 2010, the Brass-A-Holics have been taking their unique sound around the world. Steeped in the deep musical culture of New Orleans, the band brings a heavy dose of go-go funk to the New Orleans brass sound. In a blending of musical cultures stemming from cities separated by more than a thousand miles, a Brass-a-Holics live show takes the New Orleans brass band culture and infuses it with the electricity of Washington D.C.'s go-go. The resulting sound is both captivating and unique. The band consists of core New Orleans brass elements- trumpet, trombone, saxophone- and adds a full drum set, percussion, keyboard, bass and electric guitar, giving the band limitless options to explore new sonic territory.
*Preferred Seating for small parties only. Parties of 8 or more people must inquire via email to cwhitney@sonesta.com to reserve.*
**Refund available upon cancellation of reservation within 72 hours of show time**
**Special Event valet rate - $5/vehicle. Please provide ticket to event staff for validation. Garage entryways located on both the Bienville and Conti sides of the hotel.

The Addams Family is a comical feast that embraces the wackiness in every family. Wednesday Addams, the ultimate princess of darkness, has grown up and fallen in love with a sweet, smart young man from a respectable family. Wednesday confides in her father and begs him not to tell her mother. Now, Gomez Addams must do something he has never done before– keep a secret from his beloved wife, Morticia. The New Orleans Health Department, in partnership with the Louisiana Department of Health, will be conducting a COVID-19 surveillance study at the Krewe of Boo parade this Saturday, October 23. The purpose of the study is to understand better how community mitigation measures provide a protective factor from COVID-19 during a Carnival-type event. During the parade, 40 NOHD employees and volunteers, dressed as Dr. Anthony Fauci, will be holding signs with QR Codes that link up to the questionnaire. The Faucis will be handing out goody-bags to those who participate in the study filled with fun items and a free at-home Ellume COVID-19 test. Since the City of New Orleans enacted the mask and vaccine mandates in August, vaccinations increased over 11%, and the average daily cases decreased by 90%. We hope that the information gathered from this study will help us make an informed decision around Carnival 2022.

Here are the dates of the 2021 Full Moons:
November 2021
The November 2021 Full Moon, also called the Full Beaver Moon, will be on Friday November 19, 2021 03:58 EST or 8:58 UTC.
There will also be a penumbral lunar full moon eclipse during the November full moon, technically a few minutes after the peak. The moon will pass through the Earth’s penumbra resulting in a slight dimming of the moon’s surface. You likely won’t be able to tell the difference from a regular full moon.
December 2021
The December 2021 Full Moon, also called Full Cold Moon, will be on Saturday December 18, 2021 23:36 EST or December 19, 2021 04:36 UTC.
The Winter Solstice is on the calendar for December 21, 2021 10:59 EST or 15:59 UTC.
