Supernova will celebrate 10 works of light-based art, including the debut of William Nemitoff’s Iris of Memory–a permanent installation anchoring the plaza site. Supernova will also feature seven temporary exhibitions by local artists, and Michel Varisco’s permanent work Turning: Prayer Wheels for the Mississippi River.

“This fall marks the 5th Anniversary of the Lafitte Greenway’s opening, at a moment when public need for safe outdoor spaces, access to the arts, community connection, and support of local artists and businesses has never been greater,” said Friends of Lafitte Greenway Executive Director, Sophie Vorhoff, “Transforming our annual gala into a celebration of light, joy, and wonder during the holiday season feels like the perfect way to honor the Greenway’s birthday while responding to the community need.”

While Supernova is free for the public to view, it is a critical fundraiser for the Lafitte Greenway. Individuals and businesses have the opportunity to support the exhibit and future Greenway programming and improvements through making a donation. In exchange for donations, participants receive “doubluminary” tokens to exchange for exclusive perks and specials at participating local businesses from December 1, 2020 to January 15, 2021. The “Star Business” program is designed to bring foot-traffic and support to local businesses around the Lafitte Greenway that have been hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Don't Miss SuperNova - A Cool Light Show on the Lafitte Greenway
Celebrate the Greenway's 5th Birthday with a 2-week spectacle of light and wonder on the brand new Greenway Plaza -- outdoors at a safe social distance. This free, safe, and socially distanced outdoor experience will inspire joy and community healing, drive foot-traffic and customers to local businesses, and raise critical funds for the Greenway’s growth in 2021.

Supernova will be the first program to activate the new Greenway Plaza, a vibrant and welcoming community space where the Greenway meets the Bayou St. John (approx. 3200 Lafitte Ave) that will open in early December. The Plaza is a transformation of the former driveway and parking of the newly redeveloped Brake Tag Pavilion building–an open-air, covered community space on the Greenway. These 2020 projects have transformed the area from a space designed for cars to a place for people, with public art, seating, stormwater infrastructure, and native plantings.

Celebrating the Magic of Mardi Gras Marching Krewes, bursts with over 200 full color photographs that document this important New Orleans-centered cultural movement. Realizing that the marching krewe field has expanded exponentially, our team knew it was a story that must be told. CHRISTMAS CARD DAY
Each year around this time, friends and families begin mailing their holiday cards. Christmas Card Day on December 9th serves as a reminder to get your stamps, envelopes, and cards together so you can share your holiday cheer.
Sending a card during the holidays hasn’t always been a tradition. In Victorian England, sending Penny Post was inexpensive and frequent. It was also considered rude to ignore a written message. One particularly popular Victorian invented the holiday card out of necessity. Sir Henry Cole received frequent letters, and it left him little time for other responsibilities. In 1843, he asked his friend J.C. Horsley to illustrate a design he had in mind. Soon, Cole was off to the printer, and he mailed the first Christmas card in the Penny Post to friends, family, and many acquaintances.
Today, we mail a variety of cards at Christmastime. The tradition of Christmas cards continues in a broader sense. Social and electronic media keep us connected in this modern world more than ever before. However, the Christmas card continues to be a part of our annual tradition, even if it takes on a different style or pattern.
  • Photo cards – Many families take an annual holiday photo specifically for mailing to friends and family. These photos may be snapshots or professional photos. Most families save them from social media, so they remain a surprise when they arrive in the mail, too.
  • Christmas letter – These letters often highlight the events for each family member for the year. Not everyone has social media, so it’s a nice way to catch up with friends and family. The letters usually run a page in length, but some letter writers have a lot more to say.
  • Postcards – These simple cards generally send the same holiday message a regular Christmas card does, but without a fold or an envelope. With a photo on one side and a simple message on the other, they are quick and easy to send, too.
  • Business card – Christmas cards also come from businesses who want to remind us they still want our business. As a marketing tool, businesses know their best customers like to be remembered during the holidays, too.
  • New Year’s cards – The holidays do get busy, and some of us put off sending any holiday cards until New Year. They still want to keep in touch with family and friends, so they send their good wishes in the form of a Happy New Year card. So, don’t mark anyone off your Christmas card list until after the first of the year.
These holiday cards may be the only communication we receive all year long from a friend or family member. Even if we spent an abundance of time with them once, these once-a-year notes touch us with a bit of meaning this time of year. We take the time to connect once again and say, “We’re thinking of you.”
NATIONAL PASTRY DAY
National Pastry Day celebrates one of the world’s most favored baked goods. On December 9th, visit your local bakery and pick up one or two of your favorite kinds.
The pastry is a name given to a large variety of baked goods which are made with ingredients such as flour, sugar, milk, butter, shortening, baking powder, and eggs. Pastry dough is rolled out thinly and then used as a base for different baked products. A few of the more common bakery items include pies, tarts, quiches, and pasties. Bakers create both savory and sweet dishes from the doughs they create. Additionally, they continue to develop new and delicious creations all the time!
  • Pastries can be traced as far back as the ancient Mediterranean where they had almost paper-thin, multilayered baklava and Phyllo dough.
  • Pastry making began in Northern Europe after the Crusaders brought it back from the Mediterranean.
  • French and Italian Renaissance chefs eventually perfected the puff and choux pastries while 17th and 18th-century chefs brought new recipes to the table. Included in the innovative recipes were Napoleons, cream puffs and eclairs.
Culinary historians often consider French pastry chef Antonin Careme (1784 – 1833) to have been the original great master of pastry making in modern times.
Many different types of pastry deliver baked goods that make our mouths water. Most of them fall into one of the following categories:
  • Shortcrust pastry – simplest and most common.
  • Sweetcrust pastry – similar to the shortcrust but sweeter.
  • Flaky pastry – simple pastry that expands when cooked.
  • Puff pastry – has many layers that cause it to puff when baked.
  • Choux pastry – very light pastry that is often filled with cream or other fillings.
  • Phyllo pastry – paper-thin pastry dough that is used in many layers.

New Orleans is no stranger to epidemics. One of the most destructive pandemics in early New Orleans was yellow fever. The first reported deaths took place in 1796 when 600 deaths were reported – roughly six-percent of the city’s total population at the time – although reliable statistics did not begin to appear until 1817. By 1819 there were 2,190 deaths from yellow fever alone. Some years were mild with less than a dozen deaths, but others were horrific. The peak season was between July and October
The period from 1853 through 1858 was one such tragedy. All told there were 18,063 deaths from yellow fever. This did not include deaths from malaria, smallpox, cholera, influenza, and other causes. The newspapers carried daily tallies of hospitalizations, deaths, and internments such as this excerpt from a notice in the Daily Picayune on August 28, 1853. It is no wonder that New Orleans earned the sobriquet “The Nation’s Necropolis.” This was during a period when the body of medical knowledge regarding sanitation, germs, bacteria, and viruses was woefully inadequate.
1878 was the last major outbreak during which 4,046 people died of yellow fever. By the time officials and medical authorities figured out the root cause and a solution, it would be 1905 when the last outbreak of yellow fever was reported in New Orleans. That year was considered a success when only 437 deaths were reported. This was also the last outbreak of yellow fever in the United States.
 ·
If you think that the current pandemic guidelines from the CDC and local government are intrusive, you may wish to consider how past pandemics were handled. The photograph below from the archives of the Times-Picayune is from 1897 and shows a quarantine camp – an attempt to stem a recent flare-up in yellow fever in New Orleans.
After a difficult year in 1878 when 4,046 death were reported from yellow fever, strict controls managed to slow the spread so that in the 17-year span between 1879 and 1896 there were a total of 23 deaths from yellow fever. But during the summer of 1897 yellow fever came back. The citizens and officials were determined to prevent another disaster. Quarantine camps were established to isolate people who had traveled to and from areas thought to be dangerous or for those who had already contracted yellow fever.
Beginning in 1893, the city had invested heavily in improving the unsanitary conditions that plagued the city. They realized that the city’s survival would depend on their ability to keep New Orleans drained, dry, adequately supplied with water for drinking and fire protection, and provided with a sanitary sewerage system. But it was not until 1896 when the New Orleans Drainage Commission was organized to carry out a master drainage plan for the city. Three years later, in 1899, the Sewerage and Water Board was authorized by the Louisiana Legislature to furnish, construct, operate, and maintain a water treatment and distribution system and a sanitary sewerage system for New Orleans.

If only life were that simple again.

Celebration in the Oaks, City Park's annual holiday attraction featuring holiday light displays and more than a million lights hanging from the park's oak trees, will run from Nov. 28 through Jan. 3, 2021. announcements
the first time in 41 years, New Orleans will not have Mardi Gras parades
The last time New Orleans didn't have Mardi Gras parades was during the police strike in 1979.

JP proposes to discuss possibility of parades in May with new safety, flexibility measures In early December, the Jefferson Parish council will meet to talk about the possibility of celebrating Mardi Gras, even if it's later than usual.  there are discussion about parading in May pending a vaccine. Other ideas, like masks and gloves for riders, a limit on bands and floats, and other safety measures are also planned for discussion

Metairie's Mardi Gras season parades likely postponed to Memorial Day weekend

The proposed new parade schedule is:
  • May 28 - Excalibur and Symphony
  • May 29 - Argus, Madhatters, Kings and Centurions
  • May 30 - Athena, Pandora and Atlas.

This will help us organize ways for folks to participate no matter where you are. Recruit your neighbors!

The Westbank Krewe of House Floats (JP on the best bank, this is for you)

PRIORITY UPDATE: Congratulations, Fleet! As of this post you have grown to over 4600 people and I couldn't be more flattered that so many folks like my silly Mardi Gras idea enough to turn it into such a phenomenon. In order to make sure that this group is a useful resource for all hands, we are implementing some more changes to better manage information. (Please read the whole dang post - I know these are long but we have a lot of ground to cover.)
1st - In order to facilitate better info sharing, posting in the discussion will be closed to everyone except Captains and other approved volunteers. You'll still be able to comment and ask questions but we want to make sure vital information doesn't get lost.

2nd - I have created a public page @kreweofhousefloats (https://www.facebook.com/kreweofhousefloats/) and an event for Mardi Gras 2021 where folks can chat. If you just want basic information, it will be easiest to find it there as announcements are made. This will be a great place to direct your friends who are curious but not necessarily planning to participate in decorating.

3rd - Moderators and I will be cleaning up the discussion page to make sure everyone can find their subkrewes, vendor info, planning updates, and more info about how you can volunteer and participate as much or as little as you feel like. I ask that you take planning discussions to the subkrewe pages and leave this page clean for krewe-wide info. YOU HAVE 24 HOURS so if there is info you want to save do so ASAP. This group is growing very quickly and we are literally building the ship as she sails so we will adjust as necessary facilitate easy access to the latest and greatest.

4th - For folks still getting caught up, I started this group on a whim less than a week ago and did not expect this response. I have had so, so many lovely and generous people offer up their time and skills for free to help make this happen and I hope to introduce you to them all once things calm down a bit. The spirit of New Orleans is truly a force to be reckoned with and I am merely along for the ride and happy to serve. Again, I request your patience as we are just regular folks with jobs, families, and other responsibilities that don't go away just because we accidentally started a Mardi Gras krewe.
WWOZ will still be celebrating, as always, on our airwaves, though. Hear those classic Mardi Gras songs and sounds from Twelfth Night through Mardi Gras Day (Feb. 16, 2021) at 90.7 FM or wwoz.org. 💜💚💛"

Anyone is welcome to the drive-thru pop-up Chanukah experience featuring festive decorations, live music by Panorama Jazz Band, a dozen donuts for each car, and a Chanukah goodie bag for celebrations at home.

The public is invited to sample “real Greek cooking” while supporting Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral, the oldest Greek Orthodox church in the Americas.

This is a pre-paid event, cannot order day of event.
This event features homemade Greek pastries and appetizers, or mezé, perfect for the holiday season.
Classic dessert favorites from the festival, such as baklava, finikia, and karidopita (almond spice cake), are on the menu. Some new items are also up for the grab-and-go such as almond cookies, chocolate dipped finikia and portokalopita (orange cake).
Some savory items at the pop-up include a Greek charcuterie box filled with dolmades (stuffed grape leaves), Greek cheeses and olives, dips, and more goodies. There are also four types of dips including feta-goat cheese spread, grilled eggplant, Mykonos and tarama.
The traditional Greek New Year’s bread, Vasilopita, is available. A coin is hidden in the bread, and the lucky individual that finds the coin is said to be blessed for the year.
Two seatings will occur on December 12, 13, 19, and 20 and the length of each seating is as follows 9:30-11:00 a.m. and 12:30-2:00 p.m.

Expect best meteor shower of the year, 'double planet' to light up December night skies
Geminid meteor shower

The Geminid meteor shower will peak on the evening of Dec. 13-14. AccuWeather described it as the best meteor shower of the year, saying it can bring up to 120 meteors per hour.

The shower, comprised of debris coming from Asteroid 3200 Phaethon, is known both for its quantity and the bright, multi-colored meteors it produces.

The Geminids are named after Gemini, as they appear to originate from the constellation.

And this year, the shower will be visible a day before a new moon, meaning skies will be especially dark.

Jupiter and Saturn will come together on Dec. 21 for a rare "great conjunction."

This means the two will shine brightly as a "double planet," appearing just a tenth of a degree apart -- or about the thickness of a dime at arm's length.

The orbits of Earth, Jupiter and Saturn only align this way every 20 years, and the last time the planets were this close in the night sky was 1623.
"You'd have to go all the way back to just before dawn on March 4, 1226, to see a closer alignment between these objects visible in the night sky."
Jupiter and Saturn Will Align to Create the First "Christmas Star" in Nearly 800 Years
As 2020 comes to a close, the solar system has decided to grace us with a cosmic Christmas miracle that hasn't been witnessed in nearly 800 years. On Dec. 21 (aka the December solstice), Jupiter and Saturn will align so closely in the night sky that they'll almost appear to collide from our vantage point here on Earth, creating a radiant point of light often referred to as the "Star of Bethlehem" or the "Christmas Star."

To catch a glimpse of the phenomenon for yourself, make sure you have a clear view to the southwest about 45 minutes after sunset. The planets will be at their closest on Dec. 21, but the "Christmas Star" will be visible from anywhere on Earth for about one hour after sunset in the northern hemisphere for the entire fourth week of December. If you're viewing with a telescope, you may also be able to see Jupiter and Saturn's largest moons orbiting them that week. The next Great Conjunction this close won't happen until March 15, 2080, so be sure to take a peek out your window later this month for a brilliant holiday treat.

Those of you with credit will be honored at this luncheon but you must respond quickly and indicate the preferred date of the luncheon.

Looking forward to seeing you all, darlings!
"The Twelve Days of Christmas" is an English Christmas carol that enumerates in the manner of a cumulative song a series of increasingly grand gifts given on each of the twelve days of Christmas (the twelve days that make up the Christmas season, starting with Christmas Day)
On the first day of Christmas, my true love sent to me
A partridge in a pear tree.
On the second day of Christmas, my true love sent to me
Two turtle doves,
And a partridge in a pear tree.
On the third day of Christmas, my true love sent to me
Three French hens,
Two turtle doves,
And a partridge in a pear tree.
Subsequent verses follow the same pattern, each adding one new gift and repeating all the earlier gifts so that each verse is one line longer than its predecessor:
four calling birds
five gold rings
six geese a-laying
seven swans a-swimming
eight maids a-milking
nine ladies dancing
ten lords a-leaping
eleven pipers piping
twelve drummers drumming

Patio Planters Caroling Tradition Returns on December 20
Beloved Holiday Event moves to New Orleans Jazz Museum Caroling in Jackson Square, presented by Patio Planters of the Vieux Carre since 1946, will take place with a different twist this December 20, a la pandemic. On Sunday, December 20, the New Orleans Jazz Museum will welcome Caroling in Jackson Square, 2020 Style! to its grounds at 7 pm for one hour of holiday sing-along festivities. Song books and candles will be provided as usual. Masks, safety protocols and mindful distancing will be strictly enforced in accordance with State and City guidelines. Patio Planters is committed to continuing this revered holiday activity that traditonally attracts more than 8,000 visitors and locals alike to Jackson Square for a moving, interactive community holiday experience. “In these troubled times with so much uncertainty in our lives, our board felt it was especially important that our annual Caroling event carry on,” said Joey DiFata, Patio Planters president. “To safeguard our participants, we have been working closely with the Mayor’s Office Re-Opening New Orleans Advisory Task Force and the Project Management Office from Ochsner Health to limit attendance, conduct health screenings and set up pods where carolers will be stationed.” Attendance on the Museum grounds will be determined by the City of New Orleans outdoor gathering size limit at the time of the event, which includes stage guests and members of Patio Planters of the Vieux Carre, the nonprofit organization which makes the annual Caroling event possible. A lottery will be conducted from within membership with a maximum of two per household for each member drawn. Participants will enter the New Orleans Jazz Museum Courtyard via the Barracks Street Gate, which opens at 6:30 pm. For those who are unable to attend the event in person, Organizers are encouraging visitors to the city and people throughout the community to join in virtually by downloading Caroling songbooks from patioplanters.net and conducting their own sing-along with Patio Planters via Facebook from balconies, courtyards, homes, restaurants and care facilities. “We will miss the magic of standing side by side with thousands of visitors and locals alike in Jackson Square”, said Caroling chairman Sandra Dartus, “but ultimately, Caroling this year will be even bigger, bringing more people together in the spirit of the season.” This year’s Caroling in Jackson Square, 2020 Style!, presented by Patio Planters of the Vieux Carre, is also supported by a marketing grant from the Louisiana Office of Tourism. Harry Mayronne, Jr., Chris Wecklein and Amy Alvarez will assist various Clergy and Officials in leading the sing-along.
