FOREFATHERS' DAY
Each year, Forefathers' Day commemorates the landing of the Pilgrim Fathers in Plymouth, Massachusetts, on December 21, 1620. The Old Colony Club of Plymouth, Massachusetts, introduced the observance in 1769. The town observes the holiday on December 22nd (unless on Sunday, then on the following Monday).
Carrying on the traditions established in 1769, the Old Colony Club recognizes the forefathers with several events. The celebration begins at 6:00 AM with a march by members to the top of Cole's Hill next to Massasoit's statue. Next, they read a proclamation honoring the forefathers, followed by a ritual firing of the club's cannon.
The Old Colony Club and the Mayflower Society both include a succotash dinner as part of their celebration. Sauquetash was recorded as a part of the first celebration. Unlike later versions of succotash, in Plymouth, succotash is served as a broth containing large pieces of fowl and meat that are sliced at the table. And the Old Colony Club did not call the Forefathers "pilgrims" either. The name didn't come along until much later.
Well into the 1800s from New England to Los Angeles, churches and other organizations celebrated the day with meals they called "New England" dinners. Speeches reflected on the lessons the years since the Plymouth settlers arrived. Others recounted their history.

The Belle Chasse Tunnel in Belle Chasse, Louisiana opened in 1956 and permanently closed yesterday.
The tunnel carried LA 23 traffic under a shipping canal and traffic quickly overwhelmed the tunnel. A lift bridge was constructed to handle northbound traffic. Over the years there have been several leaks in the tunnel with motorists nicknaming it the “Belle Chasse Car Wash” due to the many leaks. A new high level toll bridge is replacing the tunnel and will eventually replace the lift bridge. The tunnel will be sealed off and is expected to eventually collapse since it will no longer be maintained.

A new dog park is coming to Mid-City. It'll have a restaurant and bar for pup parents.
BY POET WOLFE
Dog parks are scattered throughout New Orleans, but a new one coming to Mid-City next year is unlike any the city has seen before.
The Dog House is a new concept that will combines a dog park, restaurant and bar with unique outdoor spaces for humans, too. Owners will be able to enjoy the bar's classic cocktails or the restaurant's sandwiches and snacks while their pups play in the park.
Before moving to New Orleans in 2018, Kelly Robinson lived in Dallas, where she would visit a dog park with a bar attached to it as a way to lift her spirits after a long day.
Robinson moved to the Crescent City and continued to build her career, despite not enjoying her job. Eventually, she decided it was time to take the risk and build a business plan for a venue reminiscent of the one she would visit in Texas.
"There's a much bigger going out culture," Robinson said about New Orleans. "A much bigger dog culture over here."
Every dog is required to go through a membership process, which is now open for applications. If you're not a dog owner, however, you can still to go in and enjoy the multi-purpose outdoor space.
The bar menu is still in the works, but will include dog-friendly beers and cocktails. A kimchi fried chicken sandwich and a Swedish meatball sub are just some of the menu items that the restaurant plans to offer, with food options for dogs, of course.
The Dog House will be neighbors with other Mid-City favorites, including Margie's Grill, Ruby Slipper and Coffee Science.
"There's just a bunch of cute little spots right there," Robinson said, "And I think we're going to be a good fit."
The Dog House will be located on 2736 Banks Street

Larry Seiberth
Pianist, composer, and producer Lawrence Sieberth is at home in virtually any musical setting. While based in jazz, Lawrence’s musical vision is not limited by genre barriers—he prefers to integrate the many facets of music and performance into an engaging, inclusive experience. His own neo-bop improvisations and experimental inclinations combine with his classical and world music influences, providing an extensive musical vocabulary for both performances and compositions for television, film, and stage.
He serves as musical director and pianist for “First Lady of New Orleans Jazz” aka “The Grand Dame of New Orleans Jazz,” Ms. Germaine Bazzle, tours with Gerald French & The Original Tuxedo Jazz Band, and has collaborated regularly with icons such as Irma Thomas, Victor Goines, late greats Allen Toussaint, Johnny Adams and Charles Neville, as well as contemporaries like Jason Marsalis, Tony Dagradi, Johnny Vidacovich, Luther Kent and more.
He has released 7 albums as a bandleader under his name, and produced/arranged a series of New Orleans music compilations, in addition to more than two dozen film, television, and theatre credits as a composer, producer, arranger and performer (including “Bessie,” “Mudbound,” “Green Lantern,” “Dukes of Hazzard”).
James Evans
Reeds player James Evans arrived in New Orleans in 2013 from London by way of North Wales, chasing his dream of pursuing the music and the city he loved so much. In the UK, James played with more than a dozen well known jazz and R&B bands, plus led four of his own groups, including some orchestral works.
Evans has now called New Orleans home for over 10 years and since his arrival has been playing with many local jazz luminaries, such as Leroy Jones, Gregg Stafford, Steve Pistorius, Kevin Louis, Seva Venet, Lucien Barbarin, Gerald French, Shannon Powell, The Shotgun Jazz Band, The Smoking Time Jazz Club, Tuba Skinny, and many more staples of New Orleans trad jazz.
In addition to performing at renowned venues like Preservation Hall, Palm Court, and the largest local music festivals, James released four albums in just the past 4 years, with more on the way. Lately, you can find him experimenting with some of the city’s avant-garde players, and exploring new collaborations like the one we’ll hear tonight.

NATIONAL DATE NUT BREAD DAY
National Date Nut Bread Day on December 22nd delivers a baker's delight to celebrate. Incidentally, some sources also suggest the day is celebrated on September 8th, too.
Dates
Believed to have originated around Iraq, dates have been a staple food of the Middle East and the Indus Valley for thousands of years. They have been cultivated since ancient times from Mesopotamia to prehistoric Egypt, possibly as early as 4000 BCE.
In 1765, the Spaniards introduced dates into Mexico and California.
Dates provide essential nutrients and are an excellent source of dietary potassium. In ripe dates, the sugar content is about 80% of the fruit. The remainder of the date consists of protein, fiber, and trace elements of boron, cobalt, copper, fluorine, magnesium, manganese, selenium and zinc.
Nuts
Many nuts are good sources of vitamins E and B2. Nuts are also rich in protein, folate fiber, and essential minerals such as magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, copper, and selenium.
Several studies have shown that those who consume nuts on a regular basis are less likely to suffer from coronary heart disease. (CHD) It was in 1993 that nuts were first linked to protections against CHD. Since that time, many clinical trials have found that the consumption of various nuts such as almonds and walnuts can lower serum LDL cholesterol concentrations.
When mixing up the batter for quick bread loaves, add dates and nuts and your National Date Nut Day celebration will be ready to go!

December 22nd Celebrated History
1882
Long before Clark Griswold connected 250 strands of lights to decorate his house for Christmas, he must thank Edward H. Johnson. Thomas Edison hired Johnson in 1871 and by the time he founded the Edison Electric Light Company, Johnson was named as vice president. One of Johnson's favorite holidays was Christmas and in 1882, he put his electrical ingenuity to work. He hand-wired a string of 80 red, white, and blue bulbs the size of walnuts to his Christmas tree. Additional lights decorated his ceiling.
1932
The Mummy starring Boris Karloff, Zita Johann, and David Manners premieres. Directed by Karl Freund, the film is the first horror movie to feature a mummy.
1958
"The Chipmunk Song (Christmas Don't Be Late)" written by Ross Bagdasarian (also known as David Seville) and performed by the animated characters, The Chipmunks, Alvin, Simon, and Theodore reach #1 on the music charts. Released only weeks before, it would become a holiday favorite for generations.
2019
During a New Orleans Saints versus Tennessee Titans game, Saint wide receiver Michael Thomas set an NFL record for most catches in a season. He made his 144th catch and the Saints went on to win 38-28. The previous record was held by Marvin Harrison set in 2002.

What is the term for a word that has the opposite meaning of another word?
Antonym
Antonym is the term used to refer to a word that has an opposite meaning to another word. Antonyms are often used in language to create contrast and emphasize differences. Examples of antonyms include hot and cold, big and small, happy and sad, and many more. City Park Prepares for Enhanced Celebration in the Oaks
Expanded holiday festival to include Driving Tour, amusement-park rides and reimagined Walking Tour
New Orleans City Park’s Celebration in the Oaks, one of the most-spectacular holiday lights festivals in the country, has fascinated guests for generations. The month-long fundraiser attracts over 135,000 visitors each year who come to see City Park’s famous live oak trees swathed in over a million twinkling lights and discover hundreds of breathtaking displays throughout the Park. This year, THE New Orleans holiday tradition is taking it to another level.
“With the Driving Tour and Walking Tour, this will be the biggest footprint Celebration in the Oaks has had since Hurricane Katrina,” said Cara Lambright, City Park Conservancy CEO. “As our largest annual fundraiser, we can’t wait to share this exciting celebration with our community.”
Boasting more light displays, new attractions and the return of the Botanical Garden Walking Tour, the 2022 Celebration will offer a variety of options, and price points, for guests to choose from.
Highlights this year include:
2.25-mile Driving Tour with enhanced displays
Walking Tour with Botanical Garden access and Carousel Gardens Amusement Park rides included
Multiple dedicated Bike Nights
Botanical Garden Dripping Tree, Poinsettia Tree, Historic Train Garden and “Cajun Night Before Christmas”
Carousel Gardens Train, Christmas Tree, Mr. Bingle and free marshmallows and hot chocolate
Holiday-themed Storyland
Iconic LED dinosaurs, flamingos and pirate ship
New exhibits such Toy Land, a 12-foot Dandelion Meadow Display and Winter Wonderland
“We heard the call of the community and challenged ourselves to step it up,” said Julie LaCour, Director of CITO/Special Events. “We know how important this event is to visitors, and we feel confident this year’s final product will make memories for folks that will last a lifetime.”
City Park Conservancy’s annual operating budget is largely reliant on self-generated activities, often weather dependent, and Celebration in the Oaks plays a key role in funding the Park’s continued maintenance and beauty each year, providing nearly 10% of the Park’s annual budget. The public’s investment and attendance at Celebration in the Oaks supports City Park’s success going forward.

130 Roosevelt Way New Orleans, LA, United States, Louisiana 70112
5PM
During the Christmas season, almost every local has made their way through the cold streets of downtown New Orleans to see the lobby of the romantic Roosevelt Hotel.
Faux tree stems wrapped in glimmering white lights stand tall as they hover over guests and nearly touch the ceiling chandeliers. Neighboring the branches are snow-white Christmas trees covered in red ribbons and ornaments. Both decors line the lobby in a perfect, picturesque pattern.
Hence, it isn't hard to understand why Travel and Leisure named the Roosevelt one of the 15 most festive hotels in the U.S. during the holiday season.
“Our hotel guests, New Orleanians and tourists from all over the world come to The Roosevelt at this time of year because it is truly the brightest, most brilliant place to bring out the holiday spirit,” Tod Chambers, general manager of the Roosevelt, said in a news release.
This year, the Roosevelt is bringing back its beloved Christmas tradition on Nov. 28, unveiling 1,600 feet of garland and 4,000 glass ornaments, the hotel announced Wednesday morning.
New Orleans Saints Executive Vice President and General Manager Mickey Loomis will be there to help switch on the ceremonial lighting of over 112,000 lights, the Roosevelt said in a news release.
The hotel will also be offering various options for holiday dining experiences and drink options at the Sazerac Bar and Teddy's Café.
The Sazerac Bar is bringing back their annual holiday drinks, including the Christmas Cookie — a sweet, vodka-based mixed drink — and the Candy Cane, a sugar drink featuring Rumple Minze.

City of New Orleans Encourages Residents to Participate in the Annual Christmas Tree Recycling Program to Rebuild Wetlands
NEW ORLEANS — The City of New Orleans today reminded residents of the annual Christmas Tree Recycling Program to restore our wetlands. For over 25 years, this program has contributed to the restoration of the Bayou Sauvage Urban National Wildlife Refuge, while preventing them from being placed in landfills. The trees also create an important habitat for birds, fish, crabs, crawfish and shrimp.
"Every year, our Christmas trees bring light and happiness into our homes, but their significance goes far beyond spreading holiday joy," said Mayor LaToya Cantrell. "Recycling and placing these trees along our eroding coastline to help rebuild our wetlands will assist in the effort to protect our great city and state for generations to come. This robust tree recycling program is another example of how New Orleans will continue to lead in combatting the global climate crisis while promoting innovative opportunities to create a better, greener and more vibrant community. So far, recycled trees have restored an area of marsh equal to approximately 200 football fields. Thank you to our residents who continue to donate their Christmas trees year after year to enhance our coastline restoration efforts."
The program is coordinated by the City's Office of Resilience and Sustainability (ORS) and Department of Sanitation, in partnership with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and the Louisiana National Guard.
“We’re bringing attention to the Christmas Tree Recycling Program today because Black Friday and Small Business Saturday are popular days for New Orleanians to buy and decorate live Christmas trees,” said Director of Economic Development Jeff Schwartz. “The City can only accept trees without tinsel and flocking, and we ask residents to please consider this while decorating your tree.”
“While we are making great progress, protecting our natural resources remains more important than ever for New Orleans,” said ORS Deputy Chief Resilience Officer Greg Nichols. "The Christmas Tree Recycling Program is a great way for residents to get involved in the fight to restore our coast.”
Residents are encouraged to place their trees curbside for collection by Department of Sanitation contractors from Jan. 8 - 12, 2024. Trees cannot be flocked, and all ornamentation must be removed before placing them on the curb. Once they are collected, they will be sorted, bundled and airlifted by helicopter and dropped in targeted sections of the Bayou Sauvage Urban National Wildlife Refuge. The City’s goal is to collect 10,000 trees this year.
“The annual Christmas Tree Drop represents a long-standing partnership between the Louisiana National Guard and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service," said Louisiana National Guard, Chief Warrant Officer 3 Gabriel Ruiz. "It benefits the City of New Orleans and surrounding coastal environment, while also providing valuable training hours for our pilots and crewmembers of the 1st Assault Helicopter Battalion, 244th Aviation Regiment."
“I’d like to thank the residents of New Orleans for sharing their Christmas trees with us each year and making their contribution to coastal restoration," said USFWS Refuge Manager Shelley Stiaes. "Their tradition of donating Christmas trees is helping to rebuild our coastline and build habitat for wildlife."

Christmas Eve Bonfires rescheduled due to rain forecast
Forecasts show a high chance of rain on Sunday, with the heaviest rain around the time of lighting of the bonfires.
Author: Kenneth Kuhn
ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST PARISH, La. — A rainy forecast has organizers with Christmas Eve tradition, Festival of the Bonfires, rescheduling the event a day earlier.
Due to the inclement weather forecast for Christmas Eve, the Christmas Eve Lighting of the Bonfires has been rescheduled to Saturday, December 23rd at 7:00 p.m.
“Rescheduling the lighting of the bonfires is a hard decision, but our citizens’ and visitors’ safety is of the highest importance to each of our offices. What’s important to remember is that while the date may have changed, we still have the opportunity to gather with family and friends to celebrate Christmas and honor our cherished tradition,” Parish President Pete Dufresne said.
The decision to reschedule was made by St. James Parish Officials, St. John Parish Officials, and officials with the towns of Lutcher, Gramercy, the St. John Parish Fire Department, St. James Sheriff Office, St. John Sheriff Office, and the Pontchartrain Levee Board.
Forecasts show a high chance of rain on Sunday, with the heaviest rain around the time of lighting. However, the wind and weather forecast will be favorable on Saturday, which will allow the much-loved tradition to continue while keeping everyone’s safety in mind event according to event organizers.
“Rescheduling the lighting of the bonfires will help ensure a fun and safe event for all and ensure Papa Noel can find his way to the River Parishes before Christmas,” said Parish President Hotard.
Traffic in the area will still follow a contra flow pattern around the bonfire viewing.
At 7:00 p.m., the structures are set ablaze, lighting the sky and the surrounding area with flames that would be impossible for Papa Noël and his reindeer to miss.
Just drive down state highways 18 and 44 on Christmas Eve, and you’ll notice long lines of spectators’ cars parked at the foot of the levees.
The best viewing is by car along the east- and west-bank River Roads and by walking along the levees.
Private Bonfire gatherings are held along the river, but onlookers passing by on foot will likely be offered a smile and some holiday cheer.

For total beginners to swing dancing or dancing of any kind. Also for those looking to refresh their basics and learn some ragtime dances. We use these pre-swing era dances to teach beginners how to step on rhythm, step on rhythm while connected to another person, how to connect in order to lead or follow, you'll learn to syncopate your footwork, and then we'll slowly start to let go of one hand and create the beginnings of what will eventually be a bad-ass swing out.
7:30-8:30 Lindy Hop Vocab - Intermediate Level
This class is gonna give you some must know moves, some technique, some philosophy, and of course, we'll continue to clarify and polish up your swing outs.

DELFEAYO MARSALIS
& The Uptown Jazz Orchestra
EVERY WEDNESDAY in DECEMBER!
That's right! After nearly 4 years, Delfeayo and the Big Band return home to Wednesdays at Snug Harbor!
Delfeayo Marsalis is one of the top trombonists, composers, and producers in jazz today. Known for his “technical excellence, inventive mind and frequent touches of humor…” (Los Angeles Times), he is “…one of the best, most imaginative and musical of the trombonists of his generation.” (San Francisco Examiner).
Early influences on Delfeayo's style include J.J. Johnson, Curtis Fuller, Al Grey, Tyree Glenn, Tommy Dorsey, and Duke Ellington’s trombone masters. From the age of 17 until the present, he has produced over 100 recordings for major artists, including Harry Connick Jr, Spike Lee, Terence Blanchard, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, and his father and brothers.
In January 2011, Delfeayo and the Marsalis family (father Ellis and brothers Branford, Wynton, and Jason) earned the nation’s highest jazz honor – a National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Masters Award, thus dubbing them
"America's First Family of Jazz."
On packing a full jazz orchestra into a tiny historic jazz club: "Whatever you have to do," the trombonist says philosophically. But when the band plays the swing and bebop hits from the 1930s through the 1960s, the music is just as tight. From Mardi Gras music to modern jazz, this band does it all.
An intimate experience like no other!
Shows at 7:30pm & 9:30pm.
Doors at 7:00pm & 9:00pm.
Purchase advance tickets now, and then arrive early for dinner, drinks or dessert, to be in that number:

LSU Athletics is proud to announce its year-long celebration of 100 Years in Tiger Stadium, highlighted by stadium upgrades, events, storytelling initiatives, and a season-long celebration throughout the 2024 campaign.
Tiger Stadium, one of America’s most iconic sporting venues, first opened its gates on Thanksgiving Day, November 27, 1924. Since then, the Tigers have won 450 contests in Death Valley, which has been home to two Heisman Trophy winners, four national championship teams, and 12 SEC title-winning squads.
Included in the celebration are several upgrades to Tiger Stadium, including a new videoboard and lighting system, as well as other upgrades designed to enhance the game day experience. Other events and celebrations will be announced throughout the year.
The 2024 home schedule features several marquee matchups, including home contests against Oklahoma, UCLA, and Alabama. Information on the full 2024 schedule and season tickets will be announced in the coming weeks.
One of the most legendary stadiums in all of college football, Tiger Stadium has been called “the best place in the world to watch a sporting event” by ESPN and “the pound-for-pound king of noise in college football.”
Entering its centennial season in 2024, Tiger Stadium has been a cornerstone of LSU Athletics and the Louisiana community for almost a century, hosting numerous NFL superstars, Heisman Trophy winners, and Hall of Famers since its opening in 1924. It serves as a sporting, cultural, and commercial hub for LSU Athletics, which contributes an estimated $500 million of economic activity for the state of Louisiana annually.

Professor Carl Nivale
Welcoming the new marching krewe, Krewe Mosaïque! They have their first parade on January 13th, from Armstrong Park to Ursuline Convent. Your favorite Professor and Grand Marshal Marty Graw look forward to being there!
#Carnival2024 #MardiGras2024 #OurCarnivalHeritage #krewemosaique
https://www.axios.com/.../new-krewe-mardi-gras-parade...
A new walking krewe will debut for Mardi Gras 2024, marching through the French Quarter on Jan. 13.
Why it matters: The event fills in an otherwise parade-free weekend during the weekslong celebration of Carnival in New Orleans.
What's happening: Krewe Mosaïque will march for 12 blocks from Armstrong Park to the Ursuline Convent for the first time.
- This year's krewe will max out at 200 members, and organizers are putting an emphasis on DIY elements, handmade throws and cultural or historical relevance to the city.
- The idea stems from the krewe's founding members preference for DIY costuming and contraption-building.
What she's saying: "Everything is bright and colorful and very unique unto themselves, but when we come together, it's this beautiful experience, like a mosaic," says Krewe Mosaïque founder Terese Aiello.
