WORLD QUARK DAY
On January 19th, World Quark Day officially celebrates quark and its many benefits. Quark is a European superfood staking its claim on supermarket shelves worldwide. Quark is a delicious high-protein, low-fat alternative to soft cheese and yogurt that can be used for baking, cooking, and blending.
There are no limits when using quark. If the menu calls for sweet or savory, hot or cold, quark cheese works well in place of almost any dairy. For example, replace cream cheese or sour cream with quark. By substituting with quark, enter the world of healthy, low-carb, low-fat culinary delights. Use quark in smoothies, cheesecakes, dips, and spreads. Quark's versatility might surprise you.
Learn about quark's many possibilities as a home remedy and beauty product, too. Millions of Europeans have benefited from using quark for centuries.

The Mystic Krewe of Louisianians commissioned me to paint the 75th Anniversary of the Washington Mardi Gras poster!! A few people have asked about the differences in options and I hope that I’m able to answer below !
“lithograph” option: Signed on an 18x24” poster-like paper. We ordered a “short run” of these, so once sold out, we will not have this option again.
Large paper print option: Signed and numbered in edition of 100. The image measures 22x29”. Looks exactly the same, only printed on textured, watercolor archival paper.
Canvas options: There’s only 50 printed in whichever custom size that is ordered. Signed and numbered in order as received.

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Good Morning, New Orleans! Another round of arctic air will be moving in. This one won’t quite be to the level of cold as what we saw earlier this week but will still bring the chance for a hard freeze for part of the area.
A hard freeze watch is in effect for Friday night to Saturday morning for the northern half of our area. This is where we expect to see temperatures down into the low 20s for several hours. Once again, you will need to cover pipes and faucets along with any sensitive plants.
The southern half of the area is under a freeze watch for the same time frame. These are areas that will see upper 20s to low 30s. So, while not a hard freeze, it will still be cold enough to cause damage to plants. Remember to protect the pets as well.
Cooler weather starts to filter back in on Friday with highs in the 50s. After that, the next round of arctic air moves in. Highs over the weekend will only reach the mid to upper 40s.
Expect warmer but wetter weather through much of next week.

Organ demonstrations
Wednesday–Sunday, 11 a.m.
Barbara S. Beckman Music Room, 520 Royal Street
Free admission and no RSVP required
Join THNOC staff for a short program exploring the history of the beautifully restored Aeolian residential player pipe organ. Listen to a musical demonstration and discover the significance of this rare and technologically advanced musical instrument.
In the early 20th century, having a player organ in the home was a luxury reserved for the most opulent residences, allowing the owner to have access to recorded music before radios and phonographs were commonplace. Tobacco magnate William Ratcliffe Irby remodeled the property at 520 Royal Street—now part of THNOC’s exhibition center—to serve as his personal residence starting in 1918. In the process he installed a player organ in the entry room to his lavish third-floor apartment. The instrument, built by the Aeolian Company of New York, is one of a handful that has survived to this day in its original location and in working condition, after a meticulous restoration by the Holtkamp Organ Company.

City of New Orleans Reminds Jackson Square Artists of Permit Deadline
NEW ORLEANS — The City of New Orleans issued a reminder to all current permit holders to renew their permits for selling art on Jackson Square in the French Quarter. The deadline for all current permit holders to renew is Wednesday, Jan. 31.
Artists who sell art on or around Jackson Square are required to obtain an Occupational License and Mayoralty Permit from the Department of Finance’s Bureau of Revenue. Eligible permits are either Artist A permits to sell art on Jackson Square or Artist B permits to sell art only in Pirates Alley.
All permit holders who wish to renew must apply in person during business hours (Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.) in the Bureau of Revenue office located at City Hall (1300 Perdido St., Room 1W15). Artists must also present a valid photo ID and be prepared to pay $175.25 in the form of a certified check or money order payable to the City of New Orleans. For applicants over the age of 65, the fee is $25.25.
All permit holders who fail to renew their existing permit on or before Jan. 31 will be required to re-apply as a new applicant. A maximum of 200 Artist A permits may be issued, according to City code. There is no limit for Artist B permits.
Once all renewals have been completed, the remaining Artist A permit slots will be included in a lottery.
Similar to the permit renewal process, applicants must be present during the lottery, possess a valid photo ID and be prepared to pay $175.25 in the form of a certified check or money order payable to the City of New Orleans. For applicants over the age of 65, the fee is $25.25.
Qualified applicants are defined as persons who either have a current Artist B permit or have an application for a new Artist A permit currently on file. Artist B permit holders who seek to upgrade to an Artist A permit must also present their current Artist B permit.

Problem-solving method
What does "heuristic" mean?
Problem-solving method
heuristic Pronunciation: hyoo-ris-tik
Definition: A heuristic is a problem-solving method or rule of thumb that helps in making decisions or finding solutions quickly and efficiently, often based on practical experience or common sense rather than theoretical principles. It is a mental shortcut that simplifies complex tasks and allows for faster problem-solving by reducing the number of possible solutions to consider.
Origin: The word "heuristic" originates from the Greek word "heuriskein" meaning "to find" or "discover."
Example: The "divide and conquer" heuristic is commonly used in computer science to solve complex problems by breaking them down into smaller, more manageable subproblems.
A heuristic is a problem-solving method that allows individuals to approach complex tasks by employing practical experience and common sense rather than relying solely on theoretical principles. It helps simplify decision-making and expedites the process by narrowing down the possible solutions to consider. Whether it is used in computer science, psychology, or everyday life, heuristics serve as valuable tools that facilitate efficient problem-solving and decision-making.

BYE, BYE BYWATER AMERICAN BISTRO; HELLO BABS!
Chef Nina Compton’s retouched, refocused & redesigned restaurant reopens as BABs
Friday, January 19, 2024
The wait might not have been long but it will certainly be worth it as Chef Nina Compton and her husband/business partner Larry Miller unveil BABs – Bywater American Bistro’s casually sophisticated new incarnation – on Friday, January 19, 2024. Following a brief closure for a carefully calibrated aesthetic overhaul and a strategic menu refocus, the reimagined BABs is positioned to be a culinary haven embodying Compton and Miller’s vision of a “restaurant for every day or any day.”
At BABs, Compton, a James Beard: Best Chef South winner and prominent figure on New Orleans’ culinary landscape, maintains her signature style while infusing a rustic ambiance into the restaurant, as well as a commitment to comfort-driven dishes grounded by meticulous technique and imbued with her natural finesse. With an impressive vitae that includes years of training in Italian technique, at BABs Compton will showcase her unique style in a comfortably elegant setting with food promising big flavors. For example, new appetizers include Burrata with marinated tomatoes, sopressata, and grilled bread; Arancini with paddlefish caviar; Blackened Octopus with sweet potato coconut puree; Butternut Squash Soup with arugula pesto and ricotta salata; Shrimp Fra Diavolo; and more.
Entrées highlight Compton’s exceptional pasta-making skills with selections such as Wagyu Beef Lasagna with fontina fonduta; Spaghetti Carbonara with andouille and black truffles; and Cavatelli with shrimp run down sauce - a favorite and carry-over from the original menu. Branzino with puttanesca and soft herbs, as well as Eggplant Parmesan with garlic breadcrumbs and basil round out the main courses along with a variety of rotating specials. New desserts include a Buttermilk Zeppole served with spiced chocolate and Olive Oil Cake with whipped mascarpone and Louisiana citrus, as well as seasonal ice cream and sorbets. The new cocktail program, under the direction of Head Bartender Rick Powanda, will feature a variety of classics, along with an array of creative concoctions.
While the original space in the Rice Mill Lofts building combined raw and industrial elements with contemporary features, the newly renovated space exudes warmth and intimacy with rustic touches like warm woods, ambient sconces, and a variety of plants. A newly-added wine cellar will house the restaurant’s award-winning list of Old World and New World wines. New signage spotlighting the new name, is expected shortly. As BABs steps back into the spotlight, it marks a new chapter in the culinary journey of this celebrated restaurant.
BABs is located in the Rice Mill Lofts at 2900 Chartres Street in New Orleans’ Bywater neighborhood. The restaurant serves dinner, Wednesday – Sunday with seating from 5PM – 10PM. For additional information or reservations, please visit www.Babs-Nola.com or call (504) 605-3827.

NATIONAL POPCORN DAY
On January 19th, National Popcorn Day pops onto the scene with a crunch we all love to enjoy! The annual celebration recognizes a treat that satisfies munchies, day or night.
This time-honored snack can be sweet or savory, caramelized, buttered or plain, molded into a candied ball, or tossed with nuts and chocolate. However it is enjoyed, enjoy it on National Popcorn Day, January 19th.
The word "corn" in Old English meant "grain" or, more specifically, the most prominent grain grown in a region. When Native Americans introduce their most common grain, maize, to early Europeans, they aptly applied the word "corn."
As early as the 16th century, the Aztecs used popcorn in headdresses worn during ceremonies honoring Tlaloc, their god of maize and fertility. Early Spanish explorers were fascinated by the corn that burst into what looked like a white flower.
Popcorn started becoming popular in the United States in the middle 1800s. It wasn't until Charles Cretors, a candy-store owner, developed a machine for popping corn with steam that the tasty treat became more abundantly poppable. By 1900 he had horse-drawn popcorn wagons going through the streets of Chicago.
At about the same time, Louise Ruckheim added peanuts and molasses to popcorn to bring Cracker Jack to the world. Then in 1908, the national anthem of baseball was born. Jack Norworth and Albert Von Tilzer wrote Take Me out to the Ballgame. From that point onward, popcorn, specifically Cracker Jack, became forever married to the game.
At the Movies
Another romance connected to popcorn may have had a slow start but eventually took off. Today, who can imagine going to the movies without getting a box of buttered popcorn? While popcorn was an economical choice for snack food, the expense of installing a machine and adequately venting the building didn't seem worth the effort. If it weren't for Glen W. Dickson, we would be purchasing our popcorn from a vendor on the street before taking in the show. Dickson put in the effort and expense of placing machines inside his theaters. After realizing how quickly he recouped his costs, other theater owners followed suit.
The microwave oven spurred the next big advancement for popcorn. With the invention of the microwave, a whole new market opened for the snack food. Magnetrons, a technology produced by Raytheon Manufacturing Corporation for the military during World War II, were later used to develop microwave ovens. Percy Spencer was the man who made it happen. He used popcorn in his initial experiments during the microwave's development.
Today, Americans consume 13 billion quarts of popcorn a year, more than any other country in the world. A majority of the popcorn produced in the world is grown in the United States. Nebraska leads the corn belt in popcorn production.

What is the modern equivalent of the word "pence"?
Pennies
Pennies are the contemporary counterpart of the historical term "pence." As the smallest unit of currency in many English-speaking countries, pennies hold a significant place in modern monetary systems. Representing a fraction of a larger currency unit, such as the dollar or pound, pennies are commonly used for everyday transactions, particularly for small purchases. While the physical coins themselves may vary in appearance, their function remains consistent across different countries. Whether it's the American penny, British penny, or Australian penny, these coins serve as a ubiquitous symbol of economic value and continue to play a vital role in facilitating everyday commerce.

Ain't There No More New Orleans
Derby Gisclair
Fats Domino
In 1964, The Beatles were arguably the most famous music group in the world when their concert tour brought them to New Orleans. When reporters asked him what it was like to meet the Beatles he responded, “I didn’t meet them. They met me.” By their own admission, the highlight of the Beatles visit to the city was meeting with Fats Domino.
Born Antoine Dominique Domino, Jr., he learned to play piano at the age of 12 from his future brother-in-law Harrison Verrett. Within two years he was playing in New Orleans bars. He earned his famous nickname “Fats” not because of his size, but because bandleader Billy Diamond thought he played piano like Fats Waller.
Domino’s first record was “The Fat Man” for Imperial Records in 1949 and was an immediate sensation, selling over one million copies by 1951. A string of hits followed , penned with writing partner Dave Bartholomew – “Ain’t That A Shame,” “Blueberry Hill,” and “Walking to New Orleans” among others. During his lifetime he placed 37 songs in the Top 40 including 11 that peaked in the Top 10. It has been estimated that he sold over 110 million records and his debut song “The Fat Man” was the first rock and roll song to sell a million copies. Add “I’m Walkin’” and “Blue Monday” and “I’m Gonna Be A Wheel Someday” and “My Blue Heaven” and “Whole Lotta Loving” and “My Girl Josephine” and, well, you get the idea.
Fats Domino was one of the first artists inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986. He received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1998. In 2004, Rolling Stone Magazine named him number 25 on their list of the 100 greatest artists of all time. The accolades and awards are too numerous to mention. He died in 2017 at the age of 89 from natural causes.

Where To Get A Slice of King Cake in New Orleans | King Cake Available By The Slice in NOLA
By: Emily Hingle
King Cakes are a huge business. Even though they've been made for hundreds of years during Carnival season, there's been a massive increase in king cake sales in recent years. Perhaps that's due to the amount of king cakes being shipped across the country and more people learning about them, or perhaps social media has made them more popular than ever. There have even been king cake cocktails and burgers! Whatever the cause, king cakes are king during January and February.
Since it has been increasingly difficult to buy a whole cake due to the increase in shipping them, a lot of people have been asking where they can just buy a single slice. The following bakeries and cafes are happy to give you a single serving of the best king cakes in New Orleans.
10 PLACES WITH SLICES OF KING CAKE
. Debbie Does Doberge
1179 Annunciation St., (504) 210-8519, debbiedoesdoberge.com
There's something so heavenly about a melt-in-your-mouth, painstakingly-crafted doberge cake. The delicate confection is made from thin layers of cake alternated with rich layers of pudding to make for an ooey-gooey sweet treat. Debbie Does Doberge proudly combined the traditional doberge cake with the seasonal king cake to create something entirely new. You can pick one up at Bakery Bar or Debbie on the Levee in Kenner (2118 Reverend Richard Wilson Dr.) by the cake or by the slice.
Debbie Does Doberge has two tantalizing options for you. The Cream Cheese King Cake Doberge is seven layers of cinnamon cake holding six layers of cream cheese pudding, which are then covered in cream cheese-poured fondant dusted in purple, green, and gold. The Café Brulot King Cake is an homage to the fiery Café Brulot ritual at locals restaurants: cinnamon cake is layered with Café Brulot pudding and then finished with cream cheese icing, coffee buttercream, dehydrated orange slices, and cinnamon cake crunch.

2. Piety and Desire Chocolate
2032 Magazine St., (504) 799-1709, facebook.com/pietydesirechoc
Piety and Desire Chocolate made a name for themselves making delicious little chocolate treats, but they've graduated into being a full-blown café. They proudly pioneered a special king cake called Da Krown that you can get by the slice at the café while you sip some hot coffee.
Da Krown is a creative king cake with earl grey tea and pink peppercorn dark chocolate ganache filling and local satsuma and orange blossom glaze. The top is then sprinkled with cocoa nib, pink peppercorn, bon bon beads, and candied kumquats. Piety and Desire does not ship their king cakes, so this little treat is a specialty made just for locals or anyone who will travel here just to get it.

3. Coffee Science
410 S Broad St., (504) 814-0878, coffeesciencetogo.com
Coffee Science is a cool coffee shop that has an emphasis on creating community through events, gourmet coffee, and pastries. This season, Coffee Science is selling three very delicious king cakes by the whole cake and by slices meant to be enjoyed over coffee drinks and conversation.
You have three choices for king cake flavors (and you really can't find these anywhere else): Venetian Cream, Chocolate Espresso, and the completely unique Satsuma. All of the delicious king cakes are coated in a thin layer of glaze and dusted with purple, green, and gold sugar. The nice thing about these king cakes is there's not so much sugar on top that it takes away from the fantastic filling flavor.

4. Ayu Bakehouse
801 Frenchmen St., (504) 302-7985, ayubakehouse.com
Found in the Faubourg Marigny, Ayu Bakehouse is a modern bakery that really celebrates the flavors of New Orleans and more. The bakery has a lot to offer customers like fresh baked bread, delicious sweets, and even savory pastries like the Boudin Boy and the Muffaletta Breadstick.
When you visit, make sure to grab a slice of Ayu's Croissant City Classic king cake. If you're in the mood for something larger, the bakery sells large king muffalettas and chocolate babka, which are topped with a handmade golden bean.

5. Breads on Oak
8640 Oak St., (504) 324-8271, breadsonoak.com
Some years ago, Breads on Oak decided to totally go vegan with everything that they make. That's part of the reason that Breads on Oak's king cakes are in such high demand that they can sell out. The other part of the reason is that these king cakes are simply delicious and available by the slice when you go to the shop on Oak Street.
You can get a traditional non-filled king cake, but the flavored ones are just too good to pass up. Bavarian cream, cream cheese, strawberry cream cheese, and even a rich almond cream are your options for an amazing vegan king cake. When you order a whole king cake, an almond is hidden inside instead of a Mardi Gras plastic baby, just to make things more natural.
A lot of king cakes [Courtesy of Emily Hingle]
6. Bywater Bakery
3624 Dauphine St., (504) 336-3336, bywaterbakery.com
Bywater Bakery does king cake a little bit differently. Instead of releasing one traditional king cake or even a few filled king cakes, they choose a different unique king cake to make each week. That way, you have to come back once a week to try all of their awesome flavors. They may even have some whole cakes when you arrive, but they are happy to serve it to you by the slice.
If you missed out on the Brownie Bomb and Bouille King Cakes, fret not! They've still got Apple, Lemon Cream, and Passionfruit coming out over the course of Carnival season. Keep up with Bywater Bakery's social media to see what's currently in store.
[Courtesy of The Sweet Life Bakery, Facebook]
7. The Sweet Life Bakery
516 Veterans Memorial Blvd., (504) 371-5153, sweetlifenola.com
The Sweet Life Bakery has more options that most other bakeries when it comes to fillings. In fact, they have over a dozen kinds. If you just want to try out some of these flavors, you can stop by the bakery and order a mini version, which is just enough for one or two if you have the ability to share this deliciousness.
Just some of the available fillings are apple ooey gooey, cherry, vanilla Bavarian cream, cake batter, bananas foster, chocolate almond, and strawberry ooey gooey. The Swirl is a blend of vanilla and chocolate Bavarian cream.
[Courtesy of Laurel Street Bakery, Website]
8. Laurel Street Bakery
2701 S. Broad St., (504) 897-0576, laurelstreetbakery.com
You've got to get up pretty early in the morning to catch a slice of king cake at the Laurel Street Bakery. Actually, the bakery is open until 1 p.m., but that's early in the morning to some people. Laurel Street Bakery specializes in filled king cakes that are out of this world. It all starts with a dough that is a bit sweeter than traditional brioche and then it gets wild from there.
The bakery's favorite king cake is Nutella filled and they swear by it. Other fillings include praline, cream cheese, strawberry cream cheese, almond, and apple. Laurel Street Bakery strictly stops making king cakes on Mardi Gras Day, so you better get here fast if you want to try some.
9. Tartine
7217 Perrier St., (504) 866-4860, tartineneworleans.com
Tartine may only serve one style of traditional king cake, but it is so tasty that it can easily sell out. The hidden gem café serves breakfast, lunch, and coffee in the Black Pearl neighborhood, and they serve king cakes during Carnival season that have turned into a hot commodity.
This king cake starts with a buttery brioche bread that is filled with cinnamon cream cheese and glazed with icing and sugar in purple, green, and gold. You'll have to stop by the café to grab a slice or pre-order a king cake to understand why this singular king cake has been racking up awards and causing a stir lately.
10. Cochon Butcher
930 Tchoupitoulas St., (504) 588-7675, cochonbutcher.com
Upscale barbecue restaurant and meatery Cochon Butcher is selling slices of only one kind of king cake, and it's a hunka-hunka burnin' cake! You can get one slice of Elvis King Cake to go with your plate of meat. The Elvis King Cake is inspired by The King of Rock N' Roll's favorite food: a peanut butter and banana sandwich. This king cake has peanut butter and roasted banana filling and is topped with house-cured bacon.
If you can't help falling in love with the Elvis King Cake, you may be able to get a whole cake to share with your friends and family. Just don't be surprised if the cake has left the building for the day though. It's in high demand. Thank you, thank you very much.

UNEASY LIES THE HEAD THAT WEARS THE CROWN, BUT WHICH ONE WILL WEAR IT?
England’s King Henry II and his Queen Elinor of Aquitaine had four sons, the eldest died, leaving the other three to squabble over who came next. Unfortunately, Henry and Elinor disagreed over which one should take the crown next.
That’s the arc of The Lion in Winter, Playmakers Theater’s next production. Directed by Chase Hefte, the production chronicles the royal gathering at Christmas 1183 as the family meets to hash out the succession. It does not go well leaving Elinor to comment, “What family doesn’t have its ups and downs?”
The Lion in Winter crackles with brilliant scenes between the royals as they plot and scheme and form alliances to promote their choice for king.
The production opens Saturday, Jan. 20 and runs through Sunday, February 4. Saturday performances are at 7 p.m. and Sunday matinees are at 2 p.m. Tickets are $20 and available through www.BonTempsTix.com.

Shop with SNAP!
Market Umbrella implements fresh food incentive programs such as Market Match, which doubles SNAP dollars spent at market for the purchase of fresh fruits and vegetables. Starting January 1st, 2023, market match will be unlimited, allowing us to match each EBT dollar being swiped for on-site at the orange Welcome Tent.
Between June and the end of November, certified market vendors accept Farmers Market Nutrition Program vouchers for both seniors and WIC participants. Market Umbrella is able to double FMNP benefits with tokens on-site at the Welcome Tent.
Location on the Lafitte Greenway
In the fall of 2020, the Thursday market moved to its new home in New Orleans' vibrant Mid-City neighborhood! Located at the Lafitte Greenway and Bayou St. John, it operates year-round.
Check out the responses to Lafitte Greenway's public survey regarding use of the new Lafitte Greenway Plaza - we are thrilled about the overwhelming support for a farmers market in the space!

LSU Athletics is proud to announce its year-long celebration of 100 Years in Tiger Stadium, highlighted by stadium upgrades, events, storytelling initiatives, and a season-long celebration throughout the 2024 campaign.
Tiger Stadium, one of America’s most iconic sporting venues, first opened its gates on Thanksgiving Day, November 27, 1924. Since then, the Tigers have won 450 contests in Death Valley, which has been home to two Heisman Trophy winners, four national championship teams, and 12 SEC title-winning squads.
Included in the celebration are several upgrades to Tiger Stadium, including a new videoboard and lighting system, as well as other upgrades designed to enhance the game day experience. Other events and celebrations will be announced throughout the year.
The 2024 home schedule features several marquee matchups, including home contests against Oklahoma, UCLA, and Alabama. Information on the full 2024 schedule and season tickets will be announced in the coming weeks.
One of the most legendary stadiums in all of college football, Tiger Stadium has been called “the best place in the world to watch a sporting event” by ESPN and “the pound-for-pound king of noise in college football.”
Entering its centennial season in 2024, Tiger Stadium has been a cornerstone of LSU Athletics and the Louisiana community for almost a century, hosting numerous NFL superstars, Heisman Trophy winners, and Hall of Famers since its opening in 1924. It serves as a sporting, cultural, and commercial hub for LSU Athletics, which contributes an estimated $500 million of economic activity for the state of Louisiana annually.
