Exhibition to explore local sports history through 20 essential stories
“Crescent City Sport: Stories of Courage and Change” opens
|
WHO: The Historic New Orleans Collection
WHAT: “Crescent City Sport: Stories of Courage and Change,” an exhibition featuring original objects
WHEN: Nov. 29, 2019–March 8, 2020
Tuesday–Saturday, 9:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m.
Sunday, 10:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m.
WHERE: 520 Royal St., in the French Quarter
HOW: Admission is free.
WHY:
Stories are central to our love of sports. In a new exhibition from The Historic New Orleans Collection, 20 stories feature bitter rivalries, shocking upsets and unlikely heroes and reveal how these moments are woven into the collective memory and identity of the local community.
“Crescent City Sport: Stories of Courage and Change”
opens Friday, Nov. 22, and explores sporting moments since the end of the American Civil War that have mirrored or instigated broader social and economic change in New Orleans. Curator Mark Cave noticed the vital role sports have played in the city’s slow—and often reluctant—progress toward inclusivity, and how major sporting events have long been a cornerstone of the city’s tourism economy.
Locals and visitors alike will quickly recognize some of the stories, such as the epic bouts of heavyweight champion John L. Sullivan, the founding of the Sugar Bowl in the midst of the Great Depression and the creation of the New Orleans Saints. The exhibition also covers horseracing, basketball, cycling, sailing, roller derby and more. Visitors will see the original Sugar Bowl trophy, a plaster cast of Sullivan’s arm, the Saints’ 2010 Super Bowl trophy and hundreds of original photographs and other objects from public and private collections throughout the community.
“Crescent City Sport” will be on view through Sunday, March 8, 2020. Admission is free, and the exhibition is open Tuesday–Saturday, 9:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m. and Sunday, 10:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m. Free activity guides will be available for younger visitors.
“Crescent City Sport: Stories of Courage and Change” is presented by The Historic New Orleans Collection and sponsored by The Gayle and Tom Benson Charitable Foundation

New Orleans Downtown Injun Culture
|
A new documentary film centering around the Black Masking Indian traditions of New Orleans is set to release and has already screened a couple of times this month.
Beulah Productions in association with No UmBow Films will again present the film, New Orleans Downtown Injun Culture on November 29 on the Entergy Giant Screen (1 Canal Pl.). Described as bringing forth “thought-provoking questions” while challenging “mainstream ideologies” and acknowledging the “tremendous contributions of the Black Masking Culture to the City of New Orleans and beyond,” the documentary examines the distinctive Mardi Gras Indian community of New Orleans and their invaluable role in protecting, preserving and promoting the culture of this city.
“To not have us is like gumbo without the seasoning,” says Big Chief Darryl Montana of the Yellow Pocahontas Black Masking Downtown Injun Tribe, one of many community members featured in the film.
“For far too long has the culture of the Masking Injuns been told from the lens of the mass media. Oral traditions of the Masking Culture have been passed down from Big Chief to Big Chief, generation after generation through the oral communication and dedication of the elder chiefs and tribal members. It’s their Royal Legacy and Heritage,” says a press release.
November 29’s film screening will also include a red carpet event and signals the official premiere of the documentary. Together with Beulah Productions, Audubon Institute, New Orleans Film Council, Data News Weekly and the New Orleans Multicultural Tourism Network will produce the event, which is free and open to the public.
The red carpet opens at 7 p.m., with the screening set for 9 p.m

Traffic Restrictions
I
n anticipation of large crowds, the New Orleans Police Department and the Louisiana State Police will restrict traffic to ensure the safety of pedestrians. Additional intermittent street closures might be required as crowd size warrants.
Vehicles Limited – From 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. overnight Friday and Saturday, public safety officials will screen vehicles entering the French Quarter within the perimeter of Canal, Decatur, Dumaine, and North Rampart streets. Only residents, employees, hotel guests, and taxis or ride hailing services will be allowed to drive vehicles into the French Quarter.
No Vehicles Allowed – From 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. overnight Friday and Saturday, public safety officials will close Bourbon Street from Canal to Dumaine streets and the 700 and 800 blocks of St. Ann, Orleans, St. Peter, Toulouse, St. Louis, Conti, Bienville and Iberville streets to all traffic.
Road closures associated with the evacuation zone of the collapsed Hard Rock Hotel remain in place. Closures include Canal Street from Burgundy to Elk streets and North Rampart Street from Bienville to Common streets. Due to these closures, the City expects vehicle traffic to be even heavier than during previous Bayou Classic events. Residents and visitors are encouraged to use other routes and alternatives to driving.
Additional traffic restrictions will be in place along the route of the
Bayou Classic Parade
Saturday morning. The parade will begin at Elysian Fields Avenue and North Peters Street, proceed down North Peters Street, turn right on Poydras Street, and end at Poydras Street and Loyola Avenue.

- 700-800 blocks of St. Ann, Orleans, St. Peter, Toulouse, St. Louis, Conti, Bienville and Iberville streets
- From 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 29 through 6 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 1:

A Non-stop Farce Guaranteed to Get Audiences in a Ho Ho Ho, Ha Ha Ha Holiday Spirit!
Ricky Graham, every New Orleanians’ favorite funny man, and his jolly comical crew are back on the Rivertown Mainstage to bring some different kind of holiday cheer with this Christmas musical that has theatergoers coming back for more!
Local favorites Ricky Graham, Varla Jean Merman, Yvette Hargis and Jefferson Turner wrote this uproarious Christmas musical y'all! The creators themselves reprise their roles for the Rivertown audiences!
Get in the holiday spirit with this quick-change, cross-dressing musical version "somewhat loosely based on the idea of 'A Christmas Carol'. The "Royal Music Hall Variety Players" have a widespread case of food poisoning. This leaves only three surviving members to soldier on through a performance of A Christmas Carol originally intended for twenty. With bad puns, bawdy vaudeville humorisms, naughty double-entendres, and witty songs, it’s a most wonderful holiday treat!
Book and Lyrics by Ricky Graham. Music by Jefferson Turner. Additional Material by Jeffery Roberson and Other Interesting Bits by Yvette Hargis

French Literature Discussion Group Focuses on
Stendhal’s
The Red and the Black
|
The French Literature Discussion Group will discuss Stendhal’s
The Red and the Black
on four Monday nights during the fall of 2019 at the
East Bank Regional Library, 4747 W. Napoleon, Metairie.
Each session is free of charge and is open to the public. There is no registration.
The book is about 525 pages not counting the chronology, introduction and the appendixes. The Penguin Classic version is recommended.
All reading and discussion is conducted in English.
The Red and the Black
focuses on handsome, ambitious Julien Sorel, who is determined to rise above his humble provincial origins. Soon realizing that success can only be achieved by adopting the subtle code of hypocrisy by which society operates, he begins to achieve advancement through deceit and self-interest. His triumphant career takes him into the heart of glamorous Parisian society, along the way conquering the gentle, married Madame de Rênal, and the haughty Mathilde. But then Julien commits an unexpected, devastating crime—and brings about his own downfall.
Stendhal is the pen name of Henri Marie Beyle, who was born in Grenoble in 1783.
The Red and the Black
was his second novel, and he also produced or began three others, including
The Charterhouse at Parma
and
Lucien Leuwen
. None of his published works was received with any great understanding during his lifetime.
7 p.m., Monday, Dec. 16, 2019
Book Two, Chapter 24, Strasbourg, to Book Two, Chapter 45, which has no title (about 125 pages)
