Millions of people around the world will ring in the Lunar New Year on Friday, February 12th, coinciding with the first new moon of the lunar calendar. While commonly referred to as “Chinese New Year,” many East Asian and Southeast Asian countries outside Mainland China also celebrate the Lunar New Year, including Korea, Vietnam, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Tibet, Bhutan, Mongolia, and the Philippines.
Each country has its own unique traditions and customs, but common to all celebrations are coming together with family and friends, gift-giving, and preparing and eating traditional foods.
The Year of the Ox
On February 12th, we say goodbye to the Year of the Rat and usher in the Year of the Ox, the second animal of the Chinese Zodiac. The Ox is an esteemed animal in Chinese culture and is said to represent hard work, positivity, and honesty.
|
|
Dragon dances, mooncakes, parades, fireworks, red envelopes... most of us are familiar with many of the traditions associated with Chinese New Year celebrations. Lunar New Year is a very big deal in China. Schools and businesses are closed for a whole week and millions of people travel to their hometowns to spend the holiday with family in what is often referred to as "the world's largest human migration." Red is considered a lucky color in Chinese culture, so you will see it in abundance during Lunar New Year festivities.
Speaking of red, those red envelopes, known as hong bao, contain money that is given by elders to children. While the traditional foods prepared and eaten during Lunar New Year vary somewhat by region, jiaozi (dumplings), nian goa (rice cakes), and mandarin oranges are considered lucky foods.

YARDI GRAS
CARNIVAL EXPERIENCE
|
The Yard on Frenchmen presents:
YARDI GRAS 2021, the ultimate CARNIVAL EXPERIENCE!
This year Carnival may look a little different. That is why we pioneered a wild 5 day affair, introducing traditional and re-imagined parade route culture to our guests at The Yard.
Beginning with an immersive restaurant atmosphere, the Courtyard and interior dining room will seamlessly transition into an explosion of Yardi Gras throws and wild booty-popping presentations, including an array of characters that aren't your usual suspects. Guests let loose and party the weekend away.
This signature event features a daily CRAWFISH BOIL, indulgent food menu, Yardi Gras drink specials, a variety of special guests and "parade route" inspired surprises, with music to keep the party going from open to close.
DJ Vladimir will be on the decks each day keeping the Yardi Gras vibe alive with Partygoers dancing in their seats and out in the street.
Each night the ACE Brass band, featuring a full (St. Augustine inspired) drum line will be playing in the courtyard. You may not see a single parade this year, but you won't miss the experience if you go to the Yardi Gras!

From Châteauneuf-du-Pape, the wine of popes and kings, to the easy-drinking bottlings of Côtes du Rhône adored worldwide, the hedonistic wines of the Southern Rhône are familiar friends. As a whole, they share a lusciousness of fruit, enticing spice and earthy characteristics with the most dynamic generally hailing from the region’s mighty crus. A cru, which translates to “growth” in French, designates a legally demarcated region that’s recognized for its quality and distinctive terroir. Cru wines, labeled solely by their appellation such as Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Gigondas, Vacqueyras, Lirac, Tavel, Rasteau, are the elite; they’re positioned above wider regional classifications like Côtes du Rhône or Côtes du Rhône Villages. This designation proves both a reward and challenge to winegrowers - it imposes strict yield limits and mandates laborious quality measures.
But besides all of those well known Crus, the Rhone has some smaller appellations and production styles that are a bit off the radar. Did you know there is a sparkling wine appellation in the Rhone? And while white Rhones are a rarity (only 5% of all wine produced) they offer the same richness of fruit as the reds and are perfect for those who enjoy fuller bodied white wines. Then there is the tiniest appellation in the Rhone for red wines, Beaume des Venise - only 27 hectares so as you can imagine, the wines are hard to find.
So besides having a great supply of the well know wines from the region, check out our unsung heroes! Same approachability, same deliciousness just more rare and smaller quantities...
Domaine Achard-Vincent Clairette de Die Legend says that the process to make the sparkling wines of the little known region of Clairette de Die was found accidentally by a Gallo-Roman shepherd. He was using the cool waters of La Drôme river to chill a jar of local wine. The jar was forgotten and left in the cold water over the winter. Upon finding it in the spring, it was found to be carbonated, or pétillant, which roughly translates into English as “sparkling”. Following the original discovery, Gallic tribes left jars of the wine in rivers over the winter and then recovered them in the spring. Among the most well-known of Clairette de Die’s producers today is the tiny Domaine Achard-Vincent. Jean-Pierre Achard, and his son, Thomas, descend from five generations of growers. The domaine has farmed organically since Thomas’s grandparents were directing it, although it is now officially certified as both organic (since 1982) and biodynamic (since 2007). They only produce the traditional sparkling wines of the region and this brut bottling is a dry wine made exclusively from Clairette, crafted by the méthode traditionnelle that is also used in Champagne.
Domaine de Durban Beaumes-de-Venise Rouge - When you walk through the high-altitude vineyards at Domaine de Durban a handful of the soil reveals shards of ancient Roman roof tiles and medieval pots - wine has been a part of the culture here for millennia. Jacques Leydier bought the property in the 1960s when the farm had fallen into disrepair. Today, Henri and Philippe Leydier run the domaine and this magical spot has assumed a higher purpose, producing some of the most memorable wines of the Southern Rhône. The blend is 70% Grenache, 25% Syrah, 5% Mourvèdre made from sustainably farmed 50 year old vines, hand harvested, native yeasts and bottled unfiltered, unfined - it is a gorgeous, velvety expression of a Rhone Valley red.
Domaine de Saint-Cosme “Les Deux Albion” Blanc Château de Saint Cosme is the leading estate of Gigondas and produces the benchmark wines of the appellation. Wine has been produced on the site of Saint Cosme since Roman times, evident by the ancient Gallo-Roman vats carved into the limestone below the château. The property has been in the hands of the Barruol family since 1490. Louis Barruol took over from his father in 1992 making a dramatic shift to quality and converting to biodynamics in 2010. This white is a new project for the winery with its first vintage being 2016. The grapes come from 10-hectares near Violès, directly across the Ouvèze River from Gigondas where there is a high level of limestone. It is a blend of the predominant varieties of the region - Viognier, Picpoul, Marsanne, Clairette and Ugni Blanc and shows the salty minerality typical of limestone terroir with notes of dried apricots and white flowers.
Love the Southern Rhone? We do too! Check out some of our favorites in stock and arriving this week. Prices range from $13.99 to $113...

Mardi Gras 2021
Krewe of House Floats Westbank
|
Carnival season 2021 will look different without our traditional Mardi Gras parades. In true New Orleans fashion, our residents formed a new Krewe ¨Krewe of House Floats¨ to keep the celebration going and to help our fellow residents who have been affected by the cancellation of our traditional parades. Krewe of House Floats is a new way to celebrate our Mardi Gras traditions in a safe social distance way but with all the creativity, music and fun that is characteristic of NOLA. With over 5000 Houses participating, the Krewe of House Floats has crowned Big Freedia as The Grand Marshal of the inaugural Krewe of House Floats! We are including the list of house floats located on the Westbank so you can plan your socially distanced tour any time between February 4 and Mardi Gras Day February 16. Come out and celebrate this new tradition and make a donation to help Krewe of House Floats help those who work hard every year to make the ¨greatest FREE show on Earth¨ possible

NATIONAL NO ONE EATS ALONE DAY
On an early Friday in February, lunchrooms across America have accepted the mission started by National No One Eats Alone Day.
No One Eats Alone is a positive initiative from nonprofit Beyond Differences aimed at creating a lunchtime of inclusion. Organized by students for students, middle schools across the nation look beyond differences and find ways to start conversations at lunchtime – with everyone. No one eats alone.
That means every student in every lunchroom across the country will be eating with someone else. Students have taken up the charge to see to it that they invite other students to join them. They are making room. Filling empty seats or filling tables that were once occupied by only one student. They’re starting conversations, closing the divide, and sitting with others. And they’re getting to know people across the table. No matter their differences, no matter what, no one eats alone.

NATIONAL PLUM PUDDING DAY
Also known as Christmas pudding, National Plum Pudding Day celebrates a traditional holiday dessert. On February 12th, learn about this tasty treat with an interesting history.
Plum pudding is made by steaming or boiling and the pudding is usually served during the holiday season. Interestingly, many of the recipes don’t even contain any plums. One explanation given is that during the 17th century, plums were referred to as raisins or other fruits.
The name Christmas pudding is first recorded in 1858 in a novel by Anthony Trollope.
Plum pudding is usually made up of nutmeg, raisins, nuts, apples, cinnamon, and dates, along with other ingredients. In England, traditionally every person in the home holds onto the wooden spoon together to help stir the batter. While they are stirring, they also make a wish! Plum pudding has also been known to be called plum duff.

Nothing like the 60s when a kid could play with hot metal and molten plastic. Thingmaker: Also called Creepy Crawlers, is an activity toy made by Mattel, beginning in 1964. The toy consists of a series of die-cast metal moulds resembling various bug-like creatures, into which is poured a liquid chemical substance called "Plastigoop", which comes in assorted colours.

In 1900 the monarch of the Rex parade was Captain (Commodore) Thomas J. Woodward, a native of Maine who commanded a Union battleship during the Civil War before settling in New Orleans in the maritime trade. That year, the War Department sponsored a campaign to have New Orleans “Show Your Colors – Rex and Uncle Sam” encouraging citizens and business to fly the purple, green, and gold Mardi Gras flags alongside the red, white, and blue of the American flag. The Library of Congress has titled this photograph ”Mardi Gras Day, Rex Passing Up Camp Street,” but there is reason to question the title. Once again, this looks more like a Lundi Gras procession, not a Mardi Gras parade.
The background clearly shows both carnival flags and American flags prominently displayed in the left background. There are also numerous dukes, lieutenants, footmen, handlers, and spectators, but no sign of other floats in the left background, further bolstering the assertion that this was not Mardi Gras, but Lundi Gras. To be contrarian, the assembled crowd is quite large. There are people lining the streets, standing at windows, and gathered on balconies in large numbers.
In the center of the image is a sign that reads “American Elevator and Electric Company” whose offices were at 520 Camp Street. There is a sign on the building column in the lower left of the image for E.B. Kemp Wire Screens as well as a sign over the entrance reading “Keep Out Flies.” This would appear to be an installation advertisement as the Kemp facility was located on Baronne and Perdido Streets which was not on the parade route. In 1914 the company relocated to 831 Howard Street.
Perhaps a better verification of the location is the building across the street on the right side of the enlargement. This was the office and manufactory of Parke, Davis & Company, a Detroit-based drug company who had a lease in St. Patrick’s Hall on Camp and Lafayette Streets. When combined with the sign for the American Elevator and Electric Company from the previous image, we can safely conclude that the parade is moved along Camp Street just past Lafayette Street. Lafayette Square would be to the left out of the frame.
Photograph: Detroit Publishing Company (Library of Congress)
Definitely the Monday King. The float is the giveaway. The Monday King always rode a fancy carriage. The Tueaday king's float was much fancier and usually designed around the parade theme.

Mystery in Motion: Masking and Spirituality in Mardi Gras
|
|
Mardi Gras exhibit opens; virtual events planned
|
In addition to a stunning exhibit in the Presbytere, there also are several virtual programs offered in connection with the program.
This new exhibition inside the Presbytère on Jackson Square examines the direct influence of multicultural spirituality within the carnival traditions of Black New Orleanians. Due to the pandemic, you will not find many Black masking Indians on the streets this carnival season, but you will see their elaborate suits and learn about their use and inspiration inside the museum’s galleries. The exhibit will be on display in time for the Mardi Gras weekend, from February 13, 2021, through November 28, 2021, and will serve as the centerpiece of the museum’s planned programming to celebrate the 2021 carnival season.
“Mystery in Motion is a groundbreaking exhibition highlighting the vibrant carnival traditions of the Black community in New Orleans and it offers an excellent way to celebrate Mardi Gras safely during this current pandemic,” said Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser.
Mystery in Motion guest curators Kim Vaz-Deville, Ph.D., and Ron Bechet of Xavier University of Louisiana explore spirituality in Mardi Gras through the presentation of more than two dozen Black masking Indian suits, carnival costumes, and masking objects produced in New Orleans, juxtaposed with extraordinary African artifacts that are representative of the cultures, religions, and artistry that influenced their creation. These exceptional African objects will be on loan from the collections of the Musée du Quai Branly–Jacques Chirac and Southern University at New Orleans.
“There is so much happening on Mardi Gras day, it is impossible to take in all the sights, sounds, and experiences. The intent of the exhibition is to offer an opportunity to contemplate the spiritual dimensions of African American Mardi Gras masking that are hidden in plain view,” said Kim Vaz-Deville, Ph.D.
Additionally, several virtual events will be held in conjunction with the exhibition that are free and open to the public:

The Madisonville Market, put on by the Northshore Maker’s Market Foundation, is more than just a farmer’s market. It’s a place where the community can interact with local artisans, crafters, farmers, chefs and more as they share their passion for making handmade goods, homegrown produce and prepared foods.
The weekly market takes place each Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the Madisonville Park & Playground, located on Pine Street near the 1000 block (closest cross street is Jahncke Ave.). Over 40 vendors offer hot and ready-to-eat foods, chocolates and candies, cookies and baked goods, jams and jellies, sauces and seasonings, flowers, plants, eggs, cheeses, fruits, veggies, local honey and selections by local vintners. Also, you'll find original art, handmade jewelry and accessories, hand-dyed fabrics, hand-sewn leather goods, wooden creations, soaps and body care products, health and wellness items, home decor items, baby clothes and hand sewn masks.
Shopping aside, families will enjoy the nearby playground, and be sure to look for on-site artists and massage therapists when you're ready to take a break from your shopping. There's also a concession stand on the ballfield with bottled water and sodas.
The non-profit Northshore Maker’s Market Foundation partners with local government, businesses, and other non-profit organizations to fund local projects such as the restoration of historic sites in Madisonville, and the education of young adults ages 14-24 in the arts, trades, agriculture, and entrepreneurship through donations, fundraisers, and mentorship efforts, all with an approach of attaining sustainable solutions for healthier living.
The Northshore Maker’s Market Foundation is sponsored by Resource Bank and local small businesses such as Flamjeaux Coffee Co., a small roasting house in Mandeville.

Out of an abundance of caution and in consideration of the safety of visitors and staff, NOMA is temporarily revising our hours of operation.
through March 3, 2021, the museum will now be closed Monday through Wednesday.
NOMA will be open to visitors Thursday through Sunday, 10 AM – 6 PM. The Besthoff Sculpture Garden will remain open from Wednesday through Sunday from 9:30 AM through sundown (5 PM). During this interim period, Louisiana residents will receive free museum admission on Thursdays, courtesy of The Helis Foundation.
We are paying close attention to COVID-19 infection rates across our city and state. As per the medical and scientific experts, we are anticipating a spike in January and February following the holidays. NOMA will use this additional day of closure for sanitization protocols, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for visitors and staff.
To ensure social distancing is in place, prepaid, contactless ticketing is encouraged for museum visits.
Thank you, as always, for your continued support!
