SAZERAC HOUSE FILLS 100TH BARREL OF HOUSE-DISTILLED SAZERAC RYE
Custom-built distillery is the first to legally distill whiskey in the heart of New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS, LA – The Sazerac House distillery team reached the important milestone of barreling 100 barrels of house-made Sazerac Rye, the flagship rye brand of the Sazerac Company on Friday, February 19, 2021. Sazerac Rye is being produced by the Sazerac House’s distillery team on a custom-made, two-story tall copper still that overlooks Canal Street. The 100th barrel has been marked with a commemorative stamp and will now go to sister site Buffalo Trace Distillery for aging, before being returned to the Sazerac House for bottling in several years.

“Our team has worked diligently to distill Sazerac Rye here at our Sazerac House distillery, where guests are welcome to observe the process as part of their visit,” said David Bock, distillery operations manager at Sazerac House. “We are so excited to reach the milestone of 100 barrels and look ahead to many hundreds more right here in the heart of New Orleans.”

Sazerac House produces Sazerac Rye on a 500-gallon capacity still made by Kentucky’s Vendome Industries. The kettle/pot is 60” in diameter and has a 12-plate 17” diameter column, which is visible from Canal Street through two-story tall windows.

In addition to on-site distillation of Sazerac Rye, the Sazerac House is also offering bottled Sazerac Rye in its on-site retail shop for $27.00 for a 750 mL bottle. Sazerac Rye produced on-site at the Sazerac House will be available for purchase at the Sazerac House in several years, following the aging process. Visitors can view the still in action by booking a complimentary tour of the Sazerac House.

Modified
Phase Three Updates
"We are doing well because people have demonstrated civic trust, and they have been doing the right thing to get us where we are today. The numbers are what they are because people have been doing the right thing, and we have collectively been putting in the work. So we are on a good track and in a good spot to move to a modified Phase Three," said Mayor LaToya Cantrell.

"We’ve gone from an early hotspot to prolonged mitigation with recurrent 'ripples' of surge," said Health Director Dr. Jennifer Avegno. "In the last month, new cases have continued on a steady decline and are now back in a comfortable zone of 1 to 10 cases per 100,000 that national experts agree indicates low to moderate transmission."

Starting Friday at 6 a.m., retail stores, restaurants, salons, tattoo parlors, movie theaters, museums, and offices in Orleans Parish will be allowed to increase to 75% capacity with social distancing and masking still required. Bars, breweries, gyms, fitness centers, and conference venues will be able to operate up to 50% capacity, again with social distancing and masking required. Concert and music halls with fixed, permanent seating will be allowed to increase to 75% capacity with a maximum of 250 people. These changes are aligned with the State of Louisiana’s Phase Three guidelines.

Indoor live entertainment will be allowed, but venues are encouraged to read the guidelines due to the specificity of some of the restrictions. Under the State rules, restaurants that host indoor live entertainment are required to decrease their capacity to 50% rather than the 75% allowed without live entertainment. All venues hosting live entertainment in New Orleans must obtain a Special Event Permit or a Certificate of Registration from the Department of Safety and Permits.

The White House says $1,400 direct payments funded by the American Rescue Plan for most Americans will start showing up in bank accounts as early as this weekend. Some people will get more - as much as $3,600 per child more - because of a tax credit change aimed at helping families who struggle to pay regular expenses. The law also extends a $300-a-week boost in unemployment benefits, but many of Louisiana's jobless say red tape prevents them from getting what they are owed.

CITYWIDE FISH FRY BENEFITS HOSPITALITY WORKER RESOURCE PROGRAM
Local Restaurants Fry Up Fish On Fridays During Lent
3-12-21
NEW ORLEANS—As most New Orleanians know, Lent means Friday fish fries. While the pandemic has forced many churches across the area to alter or cancel this beloved tradition, 39 local restaurants will keep it alive this year with Fish Fry Fridays. The Fish Fry Fridays campaign will serve as a fundraising event to benefit Hospitality Cares, a partnership between Louisiana Hospitality Foundation and United Way of Southeast Louisiana (UWSELA). Participating restaurants will donate $1 per fish fry entrée sold each week.

“The pandemic has hit the hospitality sector the hardest,” said Michael Williamson, UWSELA President and CEO. “Our community always comes together to help those in need, and this campaign is no different. The restaurants themselves are stepping up to keep the industry alive while providing a safety net for its employees through Hospitality Cares.”

Hospitality Cares is a crisis grant program offering varying resources, including free civil legal aid, counseling and emergency financial assistance to individuals working in the hospitality industry – one of the region’s largest employment sectors. The emergency grants award up to $2,500 to eligible employees at hospitality businesses running active United Way workplace campaigns in Jefferson, Orleans, Plaquemines, St. Bernard, St. Tammany, Tangipahoa and Washington parishes. The funds provide temporary assistance during times of crisis to cover basic financial needs, including housing, medical and utility bills.

The Fish Fry Fridays campaign was initially launched during Lent 2020 to help hospitality workers laid off during the pandemic. It raised over $12,000 from restaurant sales and a sponsorship from TABASCO®, who will sponsor the campaign again in 2021 and be joined by New Orleans Fish House who will offer discounts to participating restaurants for their seafood features.

“We are proud to participate in this campaign,” said Phil DeGruy, New Orleans Fish House sales manager. “It is not only bringing us closer together, but it allows us to keep traditions going and keep restaurants open.”

The shift, we see it happen every year about this time. The weather begins to warm, city park and the bayou get busy with all sorts of activities and you can smell the spicy crawfish boils happening in every neighborhood of the city. We find ourselves eating lighter and drinking lighter as crisp whites and fruity rosé start to fly off the shelves while the "Big and Bold" section goes through a major slow down this time of year.

Piemonte Italy, the famed land of powerful Barolo and rich white truffles, also has a lot to offer in terms of lighter style wines. Delicious, refreshing wines made from local varieties of Arneis, Cortese, Favorita and Erbaluce offer great alternatives for warm weather whites. Popular rosés of the region are made from the local red varieties giving us an array of flavors from fruity and spicy to earthy and savory. Dolcetto, Fresia and Barbera are delightful, lighter style reds as their fruit forwardness and softer tannins can be enjoyable with or without food. The king of the region, Nebbiolo, is available in many styles ranging from light, fruity, spicy, drink now wines to deep earthy, leathery age worthy reds.

In our tasting this Friday, we'll focus on the wines of Piemonte including one of our favorite rosés that just landed in New Orleans. The rest of the lineup is TBA but I promise you it will be fantastic! Artisan Fine wines has an amazing portfolio of wines from the region to choose from so narrowing it down to 4 wines is a difficult task that I will be working on this week with Dave Sobiesk who will be pouring on Friday.

Our new Friday night tasting format is socially-distanced, attendance-limited and signup-only (no walk-ins). Weather permitting, tastings are held on the patio with a max of 6 people per time slot.

Here is part one of Neil Simon’s autobiographical trilogy: a portrait of the writer as a young teen in 1937 living with his family in a crowded, lower-middle-class Brooklyn walk-up. Eugene Jerome, standing in for the author, is the narrator and central character. Dreaming of baseball and girls, Eugene must cope with the mundane existence of his family life in Brooklyn: formidable mother, overworked father, and his worldly older brother Stanley. Throw into the mix his widowed Aunt Blanche, her two young (but rapidly aging) daughters and you have a recipe for hilarity, served up Simon-style. This bittersweet memoir evocatively captures the life of a struggling Jewish household where, as his father states “if you didn’t have a problem, you wouldn’t be living here.”

First it clinches the third seed in the Southeastern Conference Tournament. LSU will play its quarterfinal game on Friday night at approximately 8:15 p.m. at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville.
Secondly, the win gives LSU 39 SEC victories over the 2019, 2020 and 2021 seasons combined. That is more than any other SEC program in that same three-year period.
Also, LSU is the only school in the SEC to have clinched a spot in the league's top four and received the double bye in each of the last three seasons.

• 3 cups mozzarella cheese, shredded & separated
• 1/3 cup Parmesan cheese, finely grated
• 2 small boneless skinless chicken breasts
• 3/4 cup flour
• 2 teaspoons seasoned salt
• 1/4 teaspoon pepper
• 2 eggs
• 1 1/2 cups Italian breadcrumbs
• 3/4 cup vegetable oil
• 2 tablespoons butter
• fresh Parsley, to garnish

Directions
Step 1
Boil water and cook the rigatoni for 1 minute less than al dente (refer to package for cooking time).
Step 2
When the pasta is ready, drain it add it back to the pot. Toss with 32 ounces of sauce, 1/3 of the Parmesan cheese, and 1 cup of the mozzarella. Set aside.
Step 3
Pat the chicken dry with paper towels and cut into strips about 1/2 inch thick.
Step 4
Create an assembly line for breading the chicken:
Step 5
Bowl #1: 3/4 cup flour + 2 teaspoon seasoned salt + 1/4 tsp pepper. Bowl #2: 2 whisked eggs. Bowl #3: 1.5 cups breadcrumbs
Step 6
Dredge the chicken in the flour mixture, then briefly in the whisked eggs, then smother them in the breadcrumb mixture until completely covered. Use your palms to gently flatten the chicken a little bit more once it’s coated in the breadcrumbs.
Step 7
Add 1/4 inch of oil to a pan along with the butter, which helps give the chicken a golden color. Turn to medium-high heat.
Step 8
Once the pan is heated, use kitchen tongs to carefully lower the chicken into the oil, you’ll need to cook the strips in batches. Cook for about 4 minutes per side, until golden brown. You may need to add more oil as the chicken cooks.
Step 9
Place the cooked strips on a paper towel-lined plate. The paper towels absorb the excess oil, leaving you with crispier chicken.
Step 10
Slice the strips into smaller bite-sized pieces.
Step 11
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.
Step 12
Lightly grease a 9 x 13 inch casserole dish. Add half of the rigatoni/sauce mixture. Top with half of the chicken strips, 1/3 of the Parmesan cheese, and 1 cup of mozzarella cheese.
Step 13
Add the remaining rigatoni. Add the chicken strips and the remaining Parmesan and mozzarella cheese.
Step 14
Bake uncovered for 25 minutes. If you prefer a browner, crisper top, increase heat to 425 and bake for about 5 more minutes.
Step 15
Garnish with fresh parsley.

NATIONAL PLANT A FLOWER DAY
Spring is just around the corner, and March 12th is the day to participate in National Plant a Flower Day. Each year this day is dedicated to the planting of flowers and looking forward to the spring season. Flower gardening has become a hobby for many, young and old, and National Plant a Flower Day is a start to the new season each year.
Marigolds and Daffodils are the flowers of March.
It’s good to know the zone you live in to determine which flowers grow as perennials (those that grow back every year) in your area and which are considered annuals (those that require planting every year). To find out more, check out the USDA site for Hardiness Zones.
Seeds can be started inside and set in a sunny window. When the weather is nicer, move those plants outside. Keep the soil moist but not wet, and follow the seed package’s instructions for proper germination of the seedling. Those who can’t wait, get out those seed catalogs and start planning your next flower garden.
Flowers always make people better, happier and more helpful; they are sunshine, food and medicine to the soul. ~Luther Burbank, botanist (1849-1926)
Are you in a warmer climate? Then it’s time to get out the trowel and the garden gloves and start turning over some new soil. Sow some new seeds, bulbs, or plants and nurture those blossoms into a brilliant blaze for the whole neighborhood to enjoy.

NATIONAL BAKED SCALLOPS DAY
March 12th celebrates National Baked Scallops Day and a popular delicacy, the scallop.
Scallops are a cosmopolitan family and can be found in all of the world’s oceans. They are one of the most popular shellfish in the world and highly prized as a food source.
There are two fleshy parts of the scallop that are usually sold at the market for human consumption. The adductor muscle is the white medallion of meat which is rich and sweet. This is the piece that is most familiar as the “scallop” we see on a menu.
There is also the coral or the roe which can range in color from pale coral to bright orange. This crescent-shaped piece is usually discarded before the scallop is sold at market because it may contain toxins. However, sometimes it is sold attached to the adductor muscle. It is bitter and some say it cuts the richness of the rest of the scallop.
These meaty mollusks are very low in fat and are deliciously prepared in a variety of ways. Baking them omits much of the butter and fat that otherwise go into cooking this lean, white seafood.
Restaurants serve baked scallops as both an entree and an appetizer. However, if you enjoy them enough, have one as your starter and then an entree, too!

The weather is warming up, and baseball will soon return. Despite the fact that New Orleans is without a team now, there’s a deep history of the sport in the Crescent City. When the Pelicans—the city’s first pro baseball team—made their debut in 1887, their enterprising 27-year-old captain, Abner Powell, played an important role in cleaning up the ballpark atmosphere and transforming it into what we know to this day. He convinced team management to institute regular “Ladies’ Days” beginning on April 28, 1887, where women would receive free admittance. Powell’s gambit paid off in boosting attendance and opening the game up to a wider fan market. Teams throughout the country copied the idea. Powell also introduced such game-changing innovations as the detachable rain check and the use of a canvas tarpaulin to protect the infield during rainstorms.

This image shows a player stepping up to bat at Heinemann Park, later known as Pelican Stadium, around 1920. The stadium was located at Tulane and South Carrollton Avenues.

New Exhibition Celebrates the Social Aid and Pleasure Clubs of New Orleans
NEW ORLEANS – The sights and sounds of a defining local cultural practice, second line parades, come alive in “Dancing in the Streets: Social Aid and Pleasure Clubs of New Orleans,” on view at The Historic New Orleans Collection from March 6 to June 13, 2021.
Assembled in collaboration with more than 30 community partners and club members, the exhibition offers an intimate look at New Orleans street parades while also providing historical context of the tradition. Black mutual aid societies were founded in the 19th century to support African Americans and Afro-Creoles at a time when they were denied many social services, and second line parades are one of their most enduring legacies. Full of color, music, footwork, friends and neighbors, second line parades provide a weekly physical and symbolic gathering place for Black history and expression.

In the exhibition, displayed on the third level of THNOC’s Tricentennial Wing at 520 Royal Street in the French Quarter, parade regalia—from full suits to elaborate baskets and fans—gives viewers an up-close look at the unique artistry of second line parades. Images from a dozen contemporary photographers, including Judy Cooper, whose vision inspired the origin of this show, wrap around three gallery walls to re-create a second line from start to finish.

. COVID-19 safety protocols—facemasks, timed ticketing and limited gallery capacity to ensure social distancing—will be in place,

The Madisonville Market, put on by the Northshore Maker’s Market Foundation, is more than just a farmer’s market. It’s a place where the community can interact with local artisans, crafters, farmers, chefs and more as they share their passion for making handmade goods, homegrown produce and prepared foods.
The weekly market takes place each Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the Madisonville Park & Playground, located on Pine Street near the 1000 block (closest cross street is Jahncke Ave.). Over 40 vendors offer hot and ready-to-eat foods, chocolates and candies, cookies and baked goods, jams and jellies, sauces and seasonings, flowers, plants, eggs, cheeses, fruits, veggies, local honey and selections by local vintners. Also, you'll find original art, handmade jewelry and accessories, hand-dyed fabrics, hand-sewn leather goods, wooden creations, soaps and body care products, health and wellness items, home decor items, baby clothes and hand sewn masks.
Shopping aside, families will enjoy the nearby playground, and be sure to look for on-site artists and massage therapists when you're ready to take a break from your shopping. There's also a concession stand on the ballfield with bottled water and sodas.

The non-profit Northshore Maker’s Market Foundation partners with local government, businesses, and other non-profit organizations to fund local projects such as the restoration of historic sites in Madisonville, and the education of young adults ages 14-24 in the arts, trades, agriculture, and entrepreneurship through donations, fundraisers, and mentorship efforts, all with an approach of attaining sustainable solutions for healthier living.
The Northshore Maker’s Market Foundation is sponsored by Resource Bank and local small businesses such as Flamjeaux Coffee Co., a small roasting house in Mandeville.

The Louisiana State Museum, working in collaboration with the renowned Musée du Quai Branly–Jacques Chirac in Paris, has announced the opening of a new exhibition, Mystery in Motion: African American Masking and Spirituality in Mardi Gras

In addition to a stunning exhibit in the Presbytere, there also are several virtual programs offered in connection with the program.

This new exhibition inside the Presbytère on Jackson Square examines the direct influence of multicultural spirituality within the carnival traditions of Black New Orleanians. Due to the pandemic, you will not find many Black masking Indians on the streets this carnival season, but you will see their elaborate suits and learn about their use and inspiration inside the museum’s galleries. The exhibit will be on display through November 28, 2021,
“Mystery in Motion is a groundbreaking exhibition highlighting the vibrant carnival traditions of the Black community in New Orleans and it offers an excellent way to celebrate Mardi Gras safely during this current pandemic,” said Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser.
Mystery in Motion guest curators Kim Vaz-Deville, Ph.D., and Ron Bechet of Xavier University of Louisiana explore spirituality in Mardi Gras through the presentation of more than two dozen Black masking Indian suits, carnival costumes, and masking objects produced in New Orleans, juxtaposed with extraordinary African artifacts that are representative of the cultures, religions, and artistry that influenced their creation. These exceptional African objects will be on loan from the collections of the Musée du Quai Branly–Jacques Chirac and Southern University at New Orleans.
“There is so much happening on Mardi Gras day, it is impossible to take in all the sights, sounds, and experiences. The intent of the exhibition is to offer an opportunity to contemplate the spiritual dimensions of African American Mardi Gras masking that are hidden in plain view,” said Kim Vaz-Deville, Ph.D.

Additionally, several virtual events will be held in conjunction with the exhibition that are free and open to the public:

Every Wednesday, from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. on February 24 through March 31, teaching artist Ausettua AmorAmenkum will lead a dance course called African Dance in New Orleans: Online Course at the Louisiana State Museum [link.mediaoutreach.meltwater.com]. The six-week course will explore African traditions and influences on New Orleans culture and dance. To register visit the course’s event page [link.mediaoutreach.meltwater.com].

History of New Orleans Rhythm & Blues Class
Wednesdays,
March 17 & 24
4 p.m. Zoom
$45 members | $60 general admission
Professor, musician, and tour guide Dr. Charles Chamberlain will host this engaging three-part class on the long and storied history of Rhythm and Blues in New Orleans (R&B). From the R&B epicenter of Rampart Street and Matassa’s Studio to the hits of Little Richard, New Orleans was one of the most successful cities in putting out R&B hits starting in the 1950s. By the 1970s though, the city and the studios had a major downturn in hits, but the legacies of Fats Domino, Dave Bartholomew and Lloyd Price still looms large on the New Orleans music scene. Dr. Chamberlain will analyze over 6 hours of class time the rise, fall and legacy of R&B in New Orleans.
Can’t make the class? No Problem! A Zoom link will be provided after the class and participants can watch the class for 30 days after each session.

Allstate Sugar Bowl Crescent City Classic Releases Official 2021 Poster Design Featuring City Park Scene from New Orleans Artist Terry Marks
Top 500 Men and Top 500 Women in April’s Virtual 10K Race will Receive
 a Free Poster
Allstate Sugar Bowl Crescent City Classic officials have released the official poster for 2021 featuring a realistic painting from locally renowned artist Terry Marks. The 2021 poster features City Park’s picturesque Peristyle reflecting on a pool of water during a sunset.

Marks drew inspiration for the painting and poster from the scenic beauty of City Park and New Orleans, and he used both as inspiration for his take on the highly anticipated annual CCC poster.

“A photographer friend of mine took this image of the Peristyle at sunset and I knew immediately it was the image I wanted to incorporate into my poster design,” said Marks. “Ever since I became an artist most of my subject matter involves local themes, I love capturing the beauty of our city.”

Marks is the owner of Local Artscapes By Terry J. Marks, Sr. His studio is in Metairie on Airline Highway.

Marks’ official CCC poster will be available for sale at www.ccc10k.com. In continuation of CCC tradition, the top 500 men and top 500 women finishers will all receive a commemorative poster for free.

Wine & Food Experience moves to summer
The New Orleans Wine & Food Experience has announced tickets are now on sale for the 2021 event. Due to COVID-19 safety precautions, organizers have moved NOWFE to a mid-summer event, taking place June 9-13. “We are excited about our summer plans,” states Aimee Brown, NOWFE Executive Director. “We will have several of our popular events, however, coming together safely is most important. Rest assured NOWFE 2021 will be a safe place to share your love of food and wine.” Events will have limited attendance; however, some events will have additional time slots added. “We’ve created several ticket packages to help guide our guests through the best experience that fits their needs,” said Joey Worley, NOWFE President. “With varying levels, everyone can find something to fit their budget and their schedule.”

(Details for our Wednesday, June 9th Wine Dinner Series, Labs and Experiences will be announced soon.)
