on Moderation at Spirits Festival in New Orleans

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Distilled Spirits Council today announced a new partnership with Tales of the Cocktail to promote moderation messages during the weeklong spirits festival in New Orleans.

"As the spirits community gathers in New Orleans to celebrate the cocktail renaissance and share the latest trends, we want them to remember that the key ingredient to every classic cocktail is moderation," said Distilled Spirits Council Senior Vice President, Frank Coleman.  "Through this new partnership with Tales of the Cocktail, we are reaching over 10,000 professionals in the spirits and hospitality sectors with information on alcohol, health and moderation."

In partnership with Tales of the Cocktail and with support from Council members, the Council created an Alcohol and Moderation factsheet, which will be distributed to event attendees. The fact sheet includes tips for responsible entertaining and information on moderate drinking from the Dietary Guidelines for Americans.

"We welcome this important social responsibility partnership with the Distilled Spirits Council," said Ann Tuennerman, Founder and Executive Director of Tales of the Cocktail. "As we look forward to a festive week of seminars, tastings and events at Tales of the Cocktail, we encourage all attendees to practice moderation."

The Council offers the following tips for responsible entertaining. Download the full alcohol and moderation factsheet here
  1. Designate a bartender: Assign a bartender who can serve your guests and keep an eye on how much everyone is drinking.

  1. Remember, alcohol is alcohol.  According to the Dietary Guidelines, a "drink-equivalent" is defined as 1.5 fluid ounces of 80-proof distilled spirits (40 percent alcohol) such as rum, vodka, gin and whiskey; 12 fluid ounces of regular beer (5 percent alcohol); or five fluid ounces of wine (12 percent alcohol).  One drink contains 0.6 fluid ounces of alcohol.

  1. Provide food to complement your cocktails. Consider food pairings that enhance or contrast the flavor of the cocktails you're serving: fresh seafood accentuates vodka or gin cocktails; smoked meats and even pickled vegetables complement Scotch or Bourbon cocktails; and citrus-flavored dishes match well with Tequila or rum cocktails.

  1. Make available non-alcohol beverages for your guests. Always provide non-alcohol alternatives such as a festive punch for those guests who choose not to drink alcohol.

  1. Ensure your guests have a safe way home. Ensure your guests have safe rides home either through designated drivers, taxis or a car service. Have local taxi service numbers available or consider prearranging a car service or ride app credit for your guests.

NATIONAL CAVIAR DAY CELEBRATED IN LOUISIANA STYLE
Cajun Caviar to be showcased at Emeril's four New Orleans restaurants

New Orleans, Louisiana-In honor of National Caviar Day, Louisiana Caviar Co. and all of Emeril's New Orleans restaurants will celebrate by offering guests a special taste of the Louisiana delicacy. On Tuesday, July 18th, the chefs of Emeril's New Orleans, Emeril's Delmonico, NOLA Restaurant and Meril will each feature an exclusive dish showcasing Cajun Caviar. Cajun Caviar is hand-harvested from the Choupiquet fish of the fresh waters of the Atchafalaya Basin, and has a distinctive flavor because they feed on crawfish, Gulf shrimp and other seafood that are indigenous to Louisiana.

Louisiana Caviar Co., owned and operated by Amy Hollister Wilson, Chef Alison Vega-Knoll and Alden Lagasse, is the company responsible for introducing Cajun Caviar to the world over 30 years ago. Cajun Caviar is a singularly, unique Louisiana delicacy that is processed and packed by hand according to the traditional Russian method. Cajun-country fishermen harvest Cajun Caviar from the waters of the Atchafalaya Basin from early December through February. The natural black color and delicate taste of the roe is not compromised by artificial additives, colorings or preservatives. With less than 5% salt content Cajun Caviar ranks among the finest Malossol caviars in the world. In addition to traditional caviar, Louisiana Caviar Co. offers Spicy Cajun Caviar, a version made with ghost-peppers, adding spice without the burn.

Cajun Caviar is available for purchase online www.cajuncaviar.com and in Martin's Wine Cellar locations.

FRESH & LOCAL
You hear people say that local honey is better for you, but why? Well, studies have shown that local farm fresh honey provides more nutrients, including antioxidants, than traditionally raised foods. Better yet, people with allergies to foods or preservatives often find their symptoms lessen or go away when they eat only locally sourced foods! Not to mention fresh, raw honey is more potent and tastier!
As a healing remedy, honey can help in a variety of ways. It provides an energy boost as it's a good source of carbohydrates that your body needs for energy. Honey can relieve morning sickness, aid in sore throats and laryngitis, and provide relief for arthritis, upset stomachs, and bad breath. All in all, honey is really good for you!
Ask your Crescent City Farmers Market honey vendors for other ways to use honey on a daily basis.

The Pelican State Goes to War: Louisiana in World War II July 21, 2017 - April 29, 2018
The Joe W. and Dorothy D. Brown Foundation Special Exhibit Gallery

On December 8, 1941, just one day after the Pearl Harbor attacks, the United States officially entered World War II-Louisiana, however, was already front and center in the country's defense preparations. From 1940 to 1945, Louisiana hosted the largest maneuvers in US military history, witnessed massive changes to its industrial base, and saw its citizens become enthusiastic contributors to what President Franklin Delano Roosevelt deemed "The Arsenal of Democracy." The war afforded new, previously unimaginable opportunities to Louisiana's residents. Through it all, these wartime experiences in the Pelican State laid the groundwork for sweeping economic changes in the new, postwar world that emerged from the 20th century's greatest struggle.

click the E-File link on the left side of the Home Page then click Appeal of Taxable Valuation .  This link will be operational from Monday, July 24 - 4 p.m. Friday, August 18.

"You do not dispute the property assessment because you think your taxes are too high. That is a discussion to take up with the taxing authorities," said Assessor Williams. "You should see me because you think the value placed on your property is inaccurate due to estimations on its size, comparable sales or market values."

To contest an assessment value, individuals are advised to have an assessment letter and any additional documentation to support their claim, such as a recent appraisal, a builder's contract, photos or insurance coverage of the property, said Assessor Williams.

No appointments are necessary; individuals will be assisted on a first-come, first-serve basis at all locations.

JULY 18, 2017 | NATIONAL SOUR CANDY DAY | NATIONAL CAVIAR DAY |NATIONAL HAMILTONS DAY

NATIONAL SOUR CANDY DAY
On July 18 the lip puckering, eye-watering flavors enjoyed by children and adults alike are featured on this holiday. It is National Sour Candy Day!
In the candy world, sour candy is the young, energetic and fun member of the candy family. With its taste bud-awakening flavors, it adds a punch of youthful energy and a twist of fun to every flavor combination out there. Sour candy comes in a variety of fun shapes and sizes from chewy twists and ropes to sweet bite-sized pieces and straws which can be slipped into a favorite drink.

On National Sour Candy Day, instead of trying regular old candy, celebrate by trying sour candy. It's like having a birthday and not getting any older!  If you've tried sour candy before, try a new flavor or finding out which one makes your mouth pucker the most! Will it be Cherry or Watermelon or maybe a combination of Tangerine-Lemonade? National Sour Candy Day on July 18th is the perfect day to share any of the variety of flavors the American Licorice Company has to offer.

NATIONAL CAVIAR DAY
On July 18 recognize a seafood delicacy with roe on toast.  It's National Caviar Day!
In simple terms, caviar is Sturgeon fish eggs.  There are several species of Sturgeon fish.  As a result, the caviar produced varies in colors depending on the species.  Caviar is full of protein and vitamins making the delicacy a healthy meal.
The United States was the leading distributor of caviar around the year 1900 producing over 600 tons a year.  However, due to the over harvesting of Sturgeon fish for the caviar, a ban was put in place to protect the Sturgeon fish from becoming extinct.  The population has never recovered sufficiently since the ban, resulting in caviar's continued status as a luxury item.
HOW TO OBSERVE
Enjoy some caviar and post on social media using #NationalCaviarDay.

About T.A. Breaux
T. A. Breaux is a native New Orleanian and research scientist who has dedicated over 20 years of research toward resolving the mysteries and myths associated with absinthe. His mission to
painstakingly reconstruct historically accurate examples of the controversial spirit gave rise to Jade Liqueurs (www.jadeliqueurs.com). Breaux co-directed the effort to lift the USA's 95-year ban on absinthe, which came to fruition on March 5, 2007 with the launch of Lucid Absinthe Supérieure.
The following year, Breaux was similarly engaged in reversing the last vestiges of the original French ban, which allowed absinthe to be formally recognized in that country. His work has been lauded throughout the media in the USA, Europe and Australia since 2000, including numerous national television appearances (The History Channel, Discovery Channel, CBS, MSNBC, Travel Channel, PBS, etc.).
Breaux has co-authored published scientific studies on vintage absinthe in peer-reviewed journals (Journal of Agricultural and Food Science), and coauthored the book, Absinthe: The Exquisite Elixir (Fulcrum Publishing - ISBN: 1682750019). His reputation for being a staunch promoter of truth and accuracy of information and education in all matters absinthe is surpassed only by his limitless passion for recreating history through the fine art of absinthe crafting.

Thursday, July 20 at 6:30pm
AICC (537 S Peters St, NOLA)

Emily Ford of Oak and Laurel Cemetery Preservation, LLC will present a lecture on the influence of Italians and Italian Americans on New Orleans cemeteries. Meet The Council
The NOLA City Council is the legislative branch of New Orleans City government. The Council considers and enacts all local laws that govern the City of New Orleans. It reviews and has final say on many land use and zoning matters, as well as considers major economic development projects for the City. As a Board of Review for Orleans Parish, the Council examines appeals of property tax assessments for real estate taxes, and certifies tax rolls to the Louisiana Tax Commission. Other responsibilities of the Council include overseeing the operation of the public access television in Orleans Parish.

The City Council is comprised of five districts and two councilmembers-at-large. Councilmember-at-Large Stacy Head; Councilmember-at-Large Jason Rogers Williams; District "A" Councilmember Susan G. Guidry; District "B" Councilmember LaToya Cantrell; District "C" Councilmember Nadine M. Ramsey; District "D" Councilmember Jared C. Brossett; and District "E" Councilmember James Austin Gray II.
