Among the new flavors for the Carnival season, January 6 will mark the worldwide debut of the Dragon Claw King Cake. Big Chief Tootie Montana Day
Monday, January 6, 2020
3 PM – 5:30 PM

701 North Rampart Street, New Orleans, Louisiana 70116
Chief Allison "Tootie" Montana (December 16, 1922 – June 27, 2005), a lather by trade, was a New Orleans cultural icon who acted as the Mardi Gras Indian "chief of chiefs" for over 50 years. Tootie is revered in the Mardi Gras Indian culture as the Big Chief who is responsible for changing the violent way of the Indians' culture. Tootie was Big Chief of the Yellow Pocahontas Tribe and made the culture of the Mardi Gras Indians about pageantry rather than violence.

Dancing on Dauphine Opening
Hosted by
Kick off Mardi Gras with us on Monday, January 6th! James' newest series, Dancing on Dauphine, will be on display. Stop by for your first slice of king cake, then head to the Krewe of Joan of Arc parade!

Working without reference I have reconstructed various scenes of the Vieux Carre. I had great fun shifting and combining the various elements of my remembered haunts. While in any imagined recreation there are bound to be small misrepresentations of reality, they're held to a minimum in this series. Please enjoy my playful evocation of our urban heart - the French Quarter. --James

Admirers of the "Maid of Orleans" gather annually on January 6 to honor Joan of Arc with a medieval-themed walking parade and theatrical procession from Jax Brewery to Jackson Square. It's all in honor of Joan's birthday and her first battle victory, which resulted in the liberation of the citizens of Orleans, France, from a British siege in 1429. January 6 also happens to be Twelfth Night, which makes the Joan of Arc Parade a convenient kickoff event for the traditional start of Carnival season. This year also celebrates the 100th anniversary of the saint's canonization, with special events, signature throws made by individual members, including Saint Joan medals (a different image and setting each year), collectible playing cards (new ones added each year), sword pendants, Twelfth Night rings and scrolls, handmade clothespin and yarn sheep, fresh rosemary, wooden doubloons, and handmade dolls.
The parade begins at 7 pm and makes three pauses for toasts, a sword blessing, and a king cake ceremony at the end.
‌
  • January 6, 2020: The annual Joan of Arc Parade will take place on Joan’s birthday and Twelfth Night as usual. To celebrate the 100th, special features of the parade will include:
  • 100 Angels portrayed by young people of metro New Orleans ages 16-19, the age Joan was when she was a leader (free for the first 100 to sign up)
  • A new St. Joan statue to be carried in classic medieval saint procession style on a litter with a canopy
  • One-year-only 100th anniversary doubloons and playing cards.
  • February 7 and 9: The New Orleans Opera will produce Tchaikovsky’s Joan of Arc opera.

The parade starts on Bienville Street at North Front Street near the riverfront and heads into the French Quarter. It turns right on Chartres Street, right on Ursulines Street and right on Decatur Street, disbanding near Washington Artillery Park. As always, the parade pauses for a toast to French dignitaries at the Historic New Orleans Collection (Chartres and Conti Streets), for a blessing at St. Louis Cathedral (in Jackson Square) and to sing “Happy Birthday” at Joan’s statue (near Ursulines and Decatur Streets).

Celebrating the arrival of the Carnival Season, the costumed and masked krewe of the Phunny Phorty Phellows will assemble on Twelfth Night, January 6, 2020 (Monday) at the Willow Street Car Barn ( map ) at 6:30pm.

At 7pm sharp, the Phunny Phorty Phellows will board the streetcar and begin their ride to "Herarld the Arrival of Carnival" down the St. Charles Ave. Streetcar Line.

All are invited to come see the PPP off beginning at 6:30, when the group starts to gather. Of course Storyville Stompers will be there with us.
The Phellows are an historic Mardi Gras organization that first took to the streets 1878 through 1898. They were known for their satirical parades and today¹s krewe members’ costumes often reflect topical themes. The group was revived in 1981.
One Carnival historian has referred to the organization as the “Dessert of Carnival.”

Come kick off the Mardi Gras Season in style!

Southern Rep Theatre   and  Krewe du Coeur   invite you to celebrate the epiphany and usher in Mardi Gras 2020 at a  Twelfth Night Party   on  Monday, January 6th, from 7:30   –10:30 pm   at 2541 Bayou Road.  Entrance is free. Families are welcome.

The party will feature jazz music by Matt Lemmler and Olivier Bou, free tastings of king cake from Bywater Bakery and Dong Phuong Bakeshop, red beans and rice, special Carnival cocktails, and a cash bar   , and will take place in the Sanctuary Bar at Southern Rep.

At 9:15 PM after the Krewe de Jeanne D’Arc parade   , we will have a complimentary champagne toast to celebrate Queen Margarita Bergen and Krewe de Jeanne D’Arc.

Guests will also be able to get a first glimpse of Southern Rep's upcoming production of  MOTHER COURAGE AND HER CHILDREN   by Bertolt Brecht, translated by Ntozake Shange.

Come dance, eat, drink, and mingle in the beautiful Sanctuary Bar!

prize before it's awarded to the winning team.
Exhibition to explore local sports history through 20 essential stories
“Crescent City Sport: Stories of Courage and Change” opens

WHO:      The Historic New Orleans Collection

WHAT:    “Crescent City Sport: Stories of Courage and Change,” an exhibition featuring original objects

WHEN:
January 4–March 8, 2020

    Tuesday–Saturday, 9:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m.
  Sunday, 10:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m.

WHERE: 520 Royal St., in the French Quarter

HOW:     Admission is free.

WHY:         Stories are central to our love of sports. In a new exhibition from The Historic New Orleans Collection, 20 stories feature bitter rivalries, shocking upsets and unlikely heroes and reveal how these moments are woven into the collective memory and identity of the local community.
“Crescent City Sport: Stories of Courage and Change”  opens Friday, Nov. 22, and explores sporting moments since the end of the American Civil War that have mirrored or instigated broader social and economic change in New Orleans. Curator Mark Cave noticed the vital role sports have played in the city’s slow—and often reluctant—progress toward inclusivity, and how major sporting events have long been a cornerstone of the city’s tourism economy.
Locals and visitors alike will quickly recognize some of the stories, such as the epic bouts of heavyweight champion John L. Sullivan, the founding of the Sugar Bowl in the midst of the Great Depression and the creation of the New Orleans Saints. The exhibition also covers horseracing, basketball, cycling, sailing, roller derby and more. Visitors will see the original Sugar Bowl trophy, a plaster cast of Sullivan’s arm, the Saints’ 2010 Super Bowl trophy and hundreds of original photographs and other objects from public and private collections throughout the community.
“Crescent City Sport” will be on view through Sunday, March 8, 2020. Admission is free, and the exhibition is open Tuesday–Saturday, 9:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m. and Sunday, 10:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m. Free activity guides will be available for younger visitors.
“Crescent City Sport: Stories of Courage and Change” is presented by The Historic New Orleans Collection and sponsored by The Gayle and Tom Benson Charitable Foundation
