TPC Louisiana
Cameron Smith, Marc Leishman team up to win Zurich Classic of New Orleans

The team, the team, the team! It’s the mantra of the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, where the tournament’s identity as the lone regular-season team competition on the PGA Tour gives it a cache all its own.
Come Sunday at TPC Louisiana, the team of Marc Leishman and Cameron Smith proved the strongest. After starting the day one-stroke back of Louis Oosthuizen and Charl Schwartzel, the Aussies grabbed the lead on the front nine, gave it back on the back nine and then made an improbable birdie on the 16th hole to eventually force a playoff. On the first extra hole, Leishman/Smith then par the par-5 18th to take the title, Leishman’s sixth tour win and Smith’s third.

it pays EVEN MORE to finish strong at the Zurich Classic.
Here's how much prize money every golfer who made the cut will earn this week at TPC Louisiana (all money is per player).
Win: Marc Leishman/Cameron Smith, -20, $1,069,300
P-2: Louis Oosthuizen/Charl Schwartzel, -20, $436,600
3: Richy Werenski/Peter Uihlein, -19, $285,825
T-4: Keith Mitchell/Brandt Snedeker, -18, $209,666.67
T-4: Billy Horschel/Sam Burns, -18, $209,666.67
T-4: Keegan Bradley/Brendan Steele, -18, $209,666.67

NATIONAL AUDUBON DAY
On April 26th each year, National Audubon Day honors the birth of John James Audubon (April 26, 1785 – January 27, 1851).
Audubon was a French-American ornithologist, naturalist, and painter noted for his extensive studies of American birds and his detailed illustrations of the birds in their natural habitats. Audubon’s greatest work was The Birds of America which is considered one of the finest ornithological works ever completed. His work in this book contains more than 700 North American bird species with 435 hand-colored, life-size prints of 497 bird species.
Spring is an excellent time to observe the birds John Audubon described and painted. As they migrate across the country, set out feeders to welcome them along their journey. Watch them from your window or while strolling on a path.
According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, at last count approximately 45 million people watch birds. They bird watch while they travel or all year long from their homes. Many trek around the country to see a bird for the first time in its natural habitat. So can you. Learn about their habitats and migration patterns. Or simply watch them for their color and song.

NATIONAL PRETZEL DAY
National Pretzel Day on April 26th recognizes one of America’s favorite snacks. A bag of nice crunchy, salty pretzels or a big, warm, soft, cinnamon pretzel is the question of the day. Either one is an excellent choice.
There are a few different accounts of the origin of the pretzel. Most people agree that it does have a Christian background, and they were developed by the monks. According to The History of Science and Technology, in 610 AD, “an Italian monk invents pretzels as a reward to children who learn their prayers. He calls the strips of baked dough, folded to resemble arms crossing the chest, pretiola (little rewards).”
Another source puts the invention in a monastery in southern France. The looped pretzel may also be related to a Greek Ring bread from the communion bread used in monasteries a thousand years ago. In the Catholic Church, pretzels had a religious significance for both ingredients and shape. The loops in pretzel may have served a practical purpose: bakers could hang them on sticks, projecting upwards from a central column, as shown in Job Berckheyde’s (1681) painting.
The Pennsylvania Dutch immigrants introduced pretzels to North America in the 19th century. At this time, many handmade pretzel bakeries populated central Pennsylvania, and their popularity quickly spread. It was in the 20th century that soft pretzels became very popular in areas such as Philadelphia, Chicago, and New York.
More Pretzel Facts
  • Today, the average Philadelphian consumes about twelve times as many pretzels as the national average.
  • Pennsylvania is the center of American pretzel production for both hard and soft pretzels, producing 80% of the nation’s pretzels.
  • The annual United States pretzel industry is worth over $550 million.
  • The average American consumes about 1.5 pounds of pretzels per year.
  • Philadelphia opened a privately run “Pretzel Museum” in 1993.
  • Hard pretzels originated in the United States in 1850.

Derby Gisclair
I have been fascinated by the installation of ‘moon-towers’ in New Orleans as part of the city’s ambitious effort to bring arc lighting to the city in 1881. The Southwestern Brush-Light Company was established in the city in 1881 with offices at 38 Union Street and a workshop on Union and Dryades Street. They were the exclusive licensee of “the Brush lighting apparatus.”

The series of moon-towers, one of which is seen here in a photograph during the great snowstorm of 1895, ran from Canal Street along Carondelet Street for several blocks. This was the only street where these structures were erected. There were several moon-towers installed at the World Industrial & Cotton Centennial Exposition grounds which illuminated the fairgrounds, but these were eventually dismantled.

New Orleans was not alone in constructing moon-towers. In fact, there are several such structures still standing in Austin, Texas. Thirteen to be exact which are all that remain of the thirty-one towers they purchased from Detroit in 1894.Detroit retained ninety-one towers. There were also moon-towers in San Jose, California (1881), and Wabash, Indiana (1880).

Arts Fieldwork

April 27–September 5, 2021

520 Royal Street, Tricentennial Wing, 1st Floor
Free ticketed admission
Decorative arts objects—furniture, home furnishings, and the tools of daily life—carry the stories of the people who made and used them. The Historic New Orleans Collection’s exhibition Pieces of History showcases the Decorative Arts of the Gulf South (DAGS) project’s efforts to preserve and share these stories.
DAGS began in 2011, when New Orleans attorney and avid antiques collector Paul Haygood (1943–2015) established the Classical Institute of the South (CIS) to document decorative arts objects made or used in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama before 1865. Part of THNOC since 2015—and renamed DAGS this year—the project’s summer fellows travel to historic homes across the Gulf South to achieve this mission.
Pieces of History celebrates DAGS’s first decade by exhibiting significant objects cataloged by fieldwork teams alongside research photographs taken for the database. Field stories from the project’s alumni highlight memorable experiences and meaningful objects from the summers the fellows spent exploring the historic houses of the Gulf South. The exhibition also examines trade networks, cultural values, and the brutal system of enslavement that produced the Gulf South’s wealth.
Pieces of History is now open Tuesday–Saturday, 9:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m. and Sunday, 10:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m. Admission is free, but we suggest preordering tickets for timed entry. THNOC is adhering to all safety guidelines; visitors are required to wear face masks and observe social distancing limits.
The Historic New Orleans Collection gratefully acknowledges the sponsors of the exhibition, Nell H. and Fredric J. Figge and Mrs. Frank W. Masson.
We are hosting another Twilight Tasting in the Warehouse District on April 30 with music from Alexis & the Samurai, this time featuring Spring Cocktails & Cheese Pairings! Call 504-304-1485 to make your reservation soon!

  • Many rare recordings from the very first Jazz Fest in 1970, including a new addition-- Louis Cottrell!
  • Miles Davis 1986!
  • James Taylor 2009!
  • Ella Fitzgerald and Steve Wonder's surprise 1977 collaboration returns (by popular demand)!
  • Charles Mingus 1977!
  • Richie Havens 1991 - this is an incredible set on the Gentilly Stage that was one of Richie's own favorites of his entire career. Richie's estate has worked with the Archive of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation to get a perfect version of the audio. Richie Havens fans, you're in for a treat.
  • Dave Bartholomew Band with Fats Domino 1999 - this band reunited many great players from througout Dave's career.
  • Juanita Brooks was a great New Orleans jazz, theater, and gospel singer who played in "One Mo Time" for years. She toured the world and played Jazz Fest many times but was rarely recorded. The Archive of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation found and digitized a recording from 2000. We're excited to bring her back to listeners.
  • Second Thursday is often a day featuring jam bands at Jazz Fest and we're giving a nod to that with Widespread Panic with the Dirty Dozen Brass Band as guests, The Radiators, and Bonerama, among others.
  • Eubie Blake 1977, aboard the riverboat President. Eubie was 90 years old at the time of this recording -- he was born in 1887!
  • Allen Toussaint in his final Jazz Fest performance (2015)
We can't wait to Fest in Place
with you
Trout Baquet and Creole gumbo
This modern classic in the Treme was shut down at Festing in Place time last year, but now it’s back with the next generation of the Baquet family at the helm. Right now it’s operating under a hybrid takeout model – everything is packed to go, though indoor and outdoor tables are available to eat on the spot. Creole gumbo is always on the menu; and trout Baquet - a plate of fish with garlicky crabmeat and butter -- will be served each Friday and Saturday on the traditional Jazz Fest weekends. Crawfish bisque, a labor-intensive specialty the restaurant has long made just for Jazz Fest, is not available at this point. 1500 Esplanade Ave., 504-766-8687

Creole sausage po-boys
The family behind this Creole sausage company has been part of every Jazz Fest since the first one in 1970, and today Vance Vaucresson continues the tradition. To get your fix this season, you have two options.
Vaucresson will be part of JAMFest, a mini food fest produced by the interactive art installation JAMNOLA and happening both weekends at Press Street Station. Vaucresson will be there on each Friday, April 30, noon-6 p.m, 5 Homer Plessey Way, in the Marigny.

On each Saturday, Vaucresson’s is part of Pop-up @ Tchoup, a series of food vendor events outside the Rouses Market at 4500 Tchoupitoulas St., held 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Vaucresson will be at the April 24 and May 1 editions.
At each venue, you can get sausage po-boys ready to eat on the spot, or packages of sausage to cook at home.

Crawfish bread
At Jazz Fest you usually get a slice of this cheesy, meaty bread, but this year the Marksville-based maker Panaroma Foods will ship you whole loaves of crawfish bread along with its sausage jalapeño bread and shrimp bread. Panorama is taking shipping orders for the second weekend now; order by April 25 at noon for second weekend delivery. See nolacrawfishbread.com.

Crawfish Monica
Local producer Big River Foods will hold a series of pop-ups with Cottage Catering to serve its famous seafood pasta dish. You can get single servings or half-pan orders. All are sold cold to heat and serve at home. Order through nolafestfavorites.com for pick up April 30-May 2 (3-7 p.m.) at Caluda’s Cottage Catering, 1536 River Oaks Road, Harahan. The Elmwood company also sells “Crawfish Monica kits” through its website, a frozen version is sold at Rouses and “Monica sauce” is stocked at Langenstein’s for make-your-own Monica.

Crawfish sack, oyster patty, crawfish beignets combo plates

One of the most distinctive plates of food at Jazz Fest is the combo of these three seafood treats, and again this year creator Patton’s Caterers will have a drive-thru set up to get yours direct from its homebase, in a historic house in downtown Slidell (127 Cleveland Ave., Slidell). This will take place on two days for the second weekend, April 30 (noon-5 p.m.) and May 1 (10 a.m.-5 p.m.). No preorders are needed, just drive up. Patton’s will have tables arrayed on the grounds for picnic-style dining on the spot, or take the plates home. Individual items and combo plates are available. For large orders, contact Patton’s at 985-645-3600

Cajun chicken and tasso over Creole rice
Shrimp remoulade po-boy or salad
From TJ Gourmet
Last year, the downtown food hall Pythian Market had takeout Jazz Fest dishes from a number of vendors. One of them, TJ Gourmet, is now a permanent vendor here, and this year it’s serving festival dishes on site, with WWOZ playing and the food hall's bar open for drinks. Pythian Market delivers around a six-mile radius of the downtown hall. In addition to the Jazz Fest dishes, TJ Gourmet has alligator sausage kabobs and crabcakes with remoulade over salad greens for an expanded Festing in Place menu. For delivery, order online at pythianmarket.com, or order in person at the food hall, 234 Loyola Ave., 504-473-9273

Exhibition Celebrates the Social Aid and Pleasure Clubs of New Orleans
NEW ORLEANS – The sights and sounds of a defining local cultural practice, second line parades, come alive in “Dancing in the Streets: Social Aid and Pleasure Clubs of New Orleans,” on view at The Historic New Orleans Collection to June 13, 2021.
Assembled in collaboration with more than 30 community partners and club members, the exhibition offers an intimate look at New Orleans street parades while also providing historical context of the tradition. Black mutual aid societies were founded in the 19th century to support African Americans and Afro-Creoles at a time when they were denied many social services, and second line parades are one of their most enduring legacies. Full of color, music, footwork, friends and neighbors, second line parades provide a weekly physical and symbolic gathering place for Black history and expression.

In the exhibition, displayed on the third level of THNOC’s Tricentennial Wing at 520 Royal Street in the French Quarter, parade regalia—from full suits to elaborate baskets and fans—gives viewers an up-close look at the unique artistry of second line parades. Images from a dozen contemporary photographers, including Judy Cooper, whose vision inspired the origin of this show, wrap around three gallery walls to re-create a second line from start to finish.

. COVID-19 safety protocols—facemasks, timed ticketing and limited gallery capacity to ensure social distancing—will be in place,

Farmstand Live Event Comes To Shrine On Airline—Local Food Meets
 Local Music
Taking place on the two Saturdays of what are traditionally Jazz Fest weekends (April 24 and May 1, 2021), the first two events of Farmstand Live will take place at the Shrine on Airline and feature live performances by some of New Orleans’ critically acclaimed musicians; prepared dinners from the city’s finest restaurants; and farm fresh produce boxes from Crescent City Farmer’s Market.
Farmstand Entertainment is the brainchild of Emily Vanlandingham, founder/chef of Locally Preserved, New Orleans first all-natural food manufacturer. Vanlandingham, who recently earned a master’s degree in food business from the Culinary Institute of America, witnessed the economic downfall of New Orleans during the pandemic, just as she was completing the last year of her studies. “When the pandemic carried on for months on end, and I was working on my final project, I knew I needed to pivot,” says Vanlandingham. “I set out to find a way to change the distribution models of New Orleans’ most profitable sectors. We rely heavily on our incredible live music, on our renowned dining scene, and on our year-round farming. Farmstand Entertainment, and specifically, Farmstand Live, is a way to combine the three and pump money back into the economy.”
The ticketed drive in experience for April 24 beginning at 4 p.m. features Dumpstaphunk (for their official Where Do We Go from Here? album release party), Smoke n Bones, and SOUL Brass Band with prepared boxed dinners by Cochon Butcher, Justine, Charcuterie of NOLA, and Addis NOLA. (Optional Bywater Bakery dessert will be available for an additional $10 and cocktails, beer, and wine will be available for purchase.)
Saturday May 1 will featured Jon Cleary ad the Absolute Monster Gentlemen, George Porter Jr. and the Runnin; Pardoners, and Honey Island Swamp Band with food from La Petite Grocery, NOLA Charcuterie, Luncheon NOLA, and Cochon Butcher (all served in boxes with vegetarian options available). Dee-Lightful Cupcakes will e available for an additional $7 and alcohol will be available for purchase.
Ticket packages start at $90 per person. For more information, visit here. Note: All people in vehicles must have a ticket and tickets will not be sold at the gate. There is a minimum of 2 people per car and a maximum of 8 people total.
Presale tickets go on sale Thursday, April 1 and General Public tickets go on sale Monday, April 5. All shows are rain or shine. Farmstand Live will take place at the Shrine on Airline, the 10,000-seat stadium located at 6000 Airline Drive in Metairie, Louisiana.

“The Slowest Second Line on Earth” – Turtles ‘On Parade’ & Brunch Celebration
Since 2015, on every Saturday of Mother’s Day weekend, the “Krewe of Turtles” has taken a festive stroll around the French Quarter and back to their “watering” hole, New Orleans style, on ten custom-festooned wagons in a parade led by a bag-pipe procession and police motorcade, all forming “the slowest second line on earth.” This year, due to COVID restrictions, the turtles are taking a break from their annual trip around the “quarters” and will instead be ON PARADE – and their customary decorative floats will be displayed for viewing in the Brennan’s courtyard from 9 AM – 6 PM on Saturday, May 8, 2021. The tradition will “slowly” continue with a blessing at 10 AM from Monsignor Nalty and at 11 AM, a pardon like no other — a clever new tale, penned each year as a poem by State District Court Judge Lauren Lemmon.
In honor of the turtles, Brennan’s is rolling out the green carpet, literally, for a special Breakfast at Brennan’s offering with added festive green drinks, special Chocolate Turtles for dessert, and bundles of balloons – making a picture perfect backdrop for a photo-op with Mom.
Brunch will feature socially-distant seatings from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Signature dishes such as Brennan’s Eggs Sardou and Eggs Benedict promise to warm the heart and please the palate. Notably, Turtle Soup has been taken off the menu on this day, in respect for the event’s honorees.
Guests can ‘pace’ themselves throughout the day with a special Happy Hour from 2 PM to 6 PM, featuring celebratory cocktails including The Topsy Turvy and the vibrantly green-hued Grasshopper.
