RESPECT FOR PARENTS DAY | AUGUST 1
On August 1st, Respect for Parents Day recognizes the leadership roles parents play in not only a child’s life but also in our communities.

Parents provide their children with the first expression of love and sense of security. As protectors and nurturers, parents set a foundation for leading and teaching children to be responsible. Each parent provides a form of communication and a way of making decisions and correcting mistakes.
A parent’s role in the community is essential, too.
In an effort to “make our families become united and strong by recognizing the leadership roles parents have, and to reinstate the respect for parents that was evident in the past,” Respect for Parents Day was born. These are the words of Marilyn Dalrymple from Lancaster, CA, as she created the day, which is observed on August 1st.

This day was created as a reminder that parents deserve and require respect and for all to consider the value that parents have in society. This isn’t limited to children only. Those who hold power over families must likewise respect the parent
City of New Orleans to Reactivate School Zone Safety Cameras on Tuesday
NEW ORLEANS — The City of New Orleans today announced that school zone cameras will be turned on for the new school year on Tuesday, Aug. 2, at 7 a.m. School zone hours are between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. and between 2:45 p.m. and 4:45 p.m.

The automated photo enforcement program is one component of the City's efforts to reduce speeding and increase safety on our streets. As children return to in-person learning, the reactivation of school zone cameras provides important safety and deterrence functions.

Motorists are advised to carefully observe posted speed limits and exercise caution in school zones, including no cell phone use and stopping for children crossing the street. Drivers can expect to see enforcement of 20 mph school zone speed limits.

Speed is fundamentally linked to safety as higher speeds not only increase the likelihood of crashes, but also the severity of crashes. A person hit by a car traveling 35 mph is five times more likely to be killed, than by a car traveling at 20 mph. The risk is even greater when a crash involves a child or a larger vehicle such as an SUV. Higher speeds contribute to crashes in a number of ways:
  • Crashes at higher speeds create more force and are therefore more likely to be fatal
  • Drivers traveling at higher speeds have a narrower field of vision
  • Drivers traveling at higher speeds travel further before they can react
  • Vehicles traveling at higher speeds have longer stop times

Since 1979, the Jazz & Heritage Foundation has invested proceeds from the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival presented by Shell directly into the community with grants to fund projects that support the Foundation’s mission.

We are currently accepting applications for our New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation Community Partnership Grant Program 2022-2023 Cycle! Applications close on August 5, 2022 at 11pm.

Through the Community Partnership Grants program, the Foundation provides grants to schools, artists, and arts-based nonprofit organizations throughout the state.  Over the last decade, more than $12 million in grants have been distributed to Louisiana communities. The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation is now accepting requests for funding of up to $5,000 to support music and art education programs, cultural events put on by Louisiana arts-based nonprofits, new artistic works that interpret Louisiana culture, and other projects that support the Jazz & Heritage Foundation’s mission.

Tired of being ripped off

We called a Entergy- they came out and made sure our box was good (of course it was) and the service man said everyone needs to call Louisiana service commission at 225-342-4999 and file a formal complaint or nothing would change!
I say let’s blow their phone up!
NATIONAL RASPBERRY CREAM PIE DAY | AUGUST 1
On August 1st, National Raspberry Cream Pie Day takes advantage of the ripe berries available this time of year. If you’re fortunate enough to enjoy some fresh-baked raspberry cream pie, it’s a day to celebrate!

Raspberries are the edible fruit of the raspberry plant. Not only do they grow on woody stemmed perennials, but they’re a very commercial crop, too. If their thorny stems remind you of a rose bush, that’s because they are in the rose family. Their genus name is Rubus.
Approximately 100 tiny drupelets cling together to make up one raspberry. Raspberry pulp and juice fill the drupelets. The drupelets adhere to a receptacle attached to a stem. Once the receptacle is removed, the raspberry is left with a hollow core.
When you’re eating your pie, keep in mind that raspberries are rich in vitamin C, manganese, and fiber. They also contain vitamins B1, B3, folic acid, magnesium, copper, and iron.

  • All temperate regions of the world grow raspberries.
  • At one time, raspberries were a midsummer crop. However, with new technology, cultivars, and transportation,
  • they can now be obtained year-round.
  • Did you know, an individual raspberry weighs 0.11 – 0.18 oz.
  • One raspberry bush can yield several hundred berries a year.

INTERNATIONAL MAHJONG DAY | AUGUST 1
On August 1st, International Mahjong Day deals a game to get the celebration started! Play your tiles well, and perhaps you’ll honor the day with a win.

The 19th-century strategy game became popular in the United States in the 1920s. While we play the game with tiles, it’s much like rummy. The players meld beautifully designed tiles with Chinese characters and symbols to earn points. Melds include pongs, kongs, chows, and the mighty Mahjong.
Because Mahjong traveled great distances, it challenges people from many different backgrounds. As a result, Mahjong also breaks down communication barriers, bringing neighborhoods and communities together. Since people of all ages play, the game also bridges the gap between generations.
There are also a variety of styles of Mahjong, including American, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Japanese, just to name a few. Find the version you enjoy best to play. Learn several different ways to play and play them all. If you’ve never played, the season is perfect to learn.

New Orleans - Still There More
Derby Gisclair
Photographer Charles Franck chronicled many of the commercial buildings in downtown New Orleans, including this 1940’s era shot of the Standard Supply and Hardware Company at 822 – 838 Tchoupitoulas Street. The company sold heavy hardware, railroad supplies, valves, plumbing supplies, and steam goods as well as asbestos roofing shingles.
The original building was completed in 1895 as part of the Crescent Warehouse complex, which had moved from their previous location on Front and Magazine Streets in 1886 to buildings on Commerce Street between Julia and St. Joseph Streets. Their principal client was the Crescent Sugar Refinery, but they also handled storage for rice
The company relocated to Harahan in the late 1990s and went out of business not long thereafter. The old building seen here was converted into retail downstairs and condominiums upstairs in 2005. The condominiums are known as the Sugar Plantation because of the building’s connection to the old sugar refinery.

I can remember seeing the four light towers in the parking lot at Lakeside Shopping Center while crossing the single span Causeway Bridge back in the mid-1960s. Two are shown here on the North Causeway Boulevard side back in 1964.

Whether seen on HBO’s Treme or at their legendary Tuesday night gig at The Maple Leaf, Grammy-winning Rebirth Brass Band is a true New Orleans institution. Formed in 1983 by the Frazier brothers, the band has evolved from playing the streets of the French Quarter to playing festivals and stages all over the world. While committed to upholding the tradition of brass bands, they’ve also extended themselves into the realms of funk and hip-hop to create their signature sound. “Rebirth can be precise whenever it wants to,” says The New York Times, “but it’s more like a party than a machine. It’s a working model of the New Orleans musical ethos: as long as everybody knows what they’re doing, anyone can cut loose.” In the wake of the sometimes- stringent competition amongst New Orleans brass bands, Rebirth is the undisputed leader of the pack, and they show no signs of slowing down

ABOUT THE ANTIQUES FORUM
The Spanish South
August 4–7, 2022
410 Chartres Street in the French Quarter
From 1763 to 1803, Louisiana was part of the vast Spanish colonial domain that encircled the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean, leaving an indelible mark on the art, architecture, and material culture of the region. Across the Americas, Spanish colonial rule led to cross-cultural exchange, as goods from Europe, Asia, and enslaved and Indigenous craftspeople inspired new artistic expressions in ceramics, silver, textiles, and more.
In anticipation of the upcoming THNOC exhibition Spanish New Orleans and the Caribbean, the 2022 New Orleans Antiques Forum will explore the colorful Spanish era in Louisiana and the surrounding gulf region. Experts and scholars from across the country will explore decorative arts in Mexico, Louisiana, Florida, Puerto Rico, and beyond.

The Hotel Monteleone’s special rate for New Orleans Antiques Forum guests is $159/night. Reference “New Orleans Antiques Forum 2022” to reserve at this rate. Reservations may be made by calling (504) 523-3341 or the Group Reservations number at (800) 217-2033. The deadline to reserve rooms at this reduced rate is Wednesday, July 6, 2022.
General admission tickets are $275, and a limited number of discounted tickets will be available to museum professionals. The preconference tour and Sunday brunch are optional experiences open to forum participants only. To learn more about this program, contact THNOC’s Events and Ticketing team at (504) 598-7146 or [email protected].
Events are held in The Historic New Orleans Collection's Williams Research Center, 410 Chartres Street, unless noted otherwise.
