NATIONAL RELAXATION DAY | August 15
National Relaxation Day on August 15th encourages us to slow down and unwind. It’s a day to focus on taking care of ourselves and take a moment to relax.
National Relaxation Day is an important day as we all need a break from the fast-paced and often hectic lifestyles we live. Taking time to recuperate and rejuvenate our tired minds and bodies may help prevent many health risks, too. Like the founder of this day suggested, too much work can make us sick, run-down, tired and that’s just wrong.
But he was right! It has been proven that stress can be harmful to our health, both mentally and physically. Most doctors will agree that finding ways to relax and finding ways to reduce stress will improve overall health.
What is your favorite relaxation activity?
- Reading a book
- Fishing with a friend
- A picnic in the park
- Walking along the beach
- Taking a drive in the country
- Spa
- Golfing
- Photography
- A movie
- Window shopping
- Lunch with friends
- Drinks with friends
- Watching sports
- Swimming
These are just a few of the many possible relaxation ideas that you may want to use to celebrate this holiday.

To disentangle these two as we emerge from this year’s Dog Days, here are seven shows that highlight the wonder of our canine friends.
As always, you can watch the following list of features online or on the ALL ARTS app wherever you may stream.

NATIONAL LEMON MERINGUE PIE DAY | AUGUST 15
National Lemon Meringue Pie Day on August 15th gives pie lovers and lemon lovers a chance to celebrate. Tart lemon curd and delicate meringue sing together in this deliciously bright pie.
When making a lemon meringue pie, the crust is usually made with a shortbread pastry. The filling for the pie is lemon curd. Of course, the topping is a fluffy and crisp meringue.
Whip egg whites to stiff peaks to make a meringue. Add sugar to make it sweet. Meringues are baked in a slow oven so when they’re finished, they come out crisp and golden.
When life throws you lemons, make lemon meringue pie!
Since meringue is versatile, it can be baked into individual servings with fruit fillings. Pastry chefs also like to make meringue cookies, too. By adding cocoa, coffee or any number of flavorings, the light, airy cookies melt in your mouth. The same applies to meringue pies.
The meringue was perfected in the 17th century. Meanwhile, lemon meringue pie as we know it today was developed in the 19th century.

NATIONAL LEATHERCRAFT DAY | AUGUST 15
National Leathercraft Day on August 15th honors the rich heritage, artistry, and skill of leathercrafting.
The versatility of leather has proven to be artistic and utilitarian since ancient times. In the hands of a skilled craftsperson, leather transforms. Some of the most durable and usable products come from leather. A supple leather belt or a hard-working saddle hold up to their intended purpose. Stylish boots and clothing often do double duty making us look good and keeping us safe. The options are endless. Perfected over time, specialty techniques and designs give leather products long-lasting wear and use. And today, leather continues to be as fashionable as ever.
National Leathercraft Day recognizes the dedication and creativity of leather workers. Passionately, their inspiration comes alive through their designs and time-honored traditions. When a leatherworker designs a piece, expect outstanding quality and skill.

Established in 1903, the National Blow Pipe Company was located at 1006 Tchoupitoulas Street with another facility at 682 Tchoupitoulas Street. The photographs below were taken by Covert for the New Orleans Chamber of Commerce
Before World War II the company had relocated to 738 Dryades Street making large fans and blow pipes for sugar, cotton, and lumber mills. The government put them to work manufacturing shell casings. After the war they produced the novel step-on garbage cans. They later manufactured aluminum awnings which they sold from a retail facility at 1610 Kentucky Street.
The company’s last known address was 1641 Poland Avenue, but was dissolved and liquidated on February 16, 1971.

Rebirth Brass Band EVERY Tuesday at Zony Mash!
Zony Mash Beer Project
Public
Zony Mash is proud to be the home of Rebirth Brass Band EVERY Tuesday through June!
Doors at 7pm, Show at 8pm
Whether seen on HBO’s Treme or at their legendary Tuesday night gig at The Maple Leaf, Grammy-winning Rebirth Brass Band is a true New Orleans institution. Formed in 1983 by the Frazier brothers, the band has evolved from playing the streets of the French Quarter to playing festivals and stages all over the world. While committed to upholding the tradition of brass bands, they’ve also extended themselves into the realms of funk and hip-hop to create their signature sound. “Rebirth can be precise whenever it wants to,” says The New York Times, “but it’s more like a party than a machine. It’s a working model of the New Orleans musical ethos: as long as everybody knows what they’re doing, anyone can cut loose.” In the wake of the sometimes- stringent competition amongst New Orleans brass bands, Rebirth is the undisputed leader of the pack, and they show no signs of slowing down

The Tennessee Williams Theatre Company of New Orleans returns to The Marigny Opera House for the first time since 2019 this August 2022 with Tennessee Williams’ glorious gothic drama, SUMMER & SMOKE!
Tennessee Williams’ devastating drama about things that could have been and the things that might never come again. Alma Winemiller (Elizabeth McCoy) is a minister’s daughter who grew up too fast in the shadow of the church and with the responsibility of caring for her demented mother. She pined for the uninhibited, passionate boy next door (Co-Starring Justin Davis) all through her youth, and now he’s returned to his hometown…and the torch Alma holds for him has never burned more brightly. Will her own fire consume her, or will she be smothered by the expectations and repression she’s grown so used to? And what if he’s not still there when she comes around? Will his heat be nothing but smoking cinders come autumn?

Beads, Feathers, and Spirit: The Preservation of Black Masking Indian Suits
Join THNOC’s Decorative Arts Trust intern Loren Brown for a virtual lecture on the maintenance and preservation of Black Masking Indian suits. Brown will discuss what she has learned from Chief Howard Miller (Creole Wild West) during her 16-week internship and how collectors, artists, and cultural institutions like THNOC can care for and store sacred suit components laden with intricate beadwork and feathers. The prerecorded virtual lecture will be followed by a live discussion with Brown, moderated by Decorative Arts curator Lydia Blackmore.
In addition to her work on site, Brown spent a great deal of time with Chief Miller at the Mardi Gras Indian Council learning about the craft, artistry, and culture of Black Masking Indian suits. This internship was funded by an IDEAL grant from the Decorative Arts Trust.
The virtual lecture is free for THNOC members, as well as members of participating New Orleans Museum Month organizations, but registration is required.

PAN AM FLIGHT 759 SCREENING
Jefferson Parish Library
|
Pan Am Flight 759, a documentary by filmmaker Royd Anderson, will be screened twice at the East Bank Regional Library, 4747 Napoleon, Metairie, to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the crash.
The screening will occur at 6:30 p.m. on . Wednesday, Aug. 24.
The extra screenings are occurring because of the overwhelming popularity of the documentary. A previous screening on Saturday, July 9 during an estimated crowd of 175, some of whom could not get into the room to view the documentary.
screening is free of charge and open to the public. Registration is not required. The filmmaker will be present at the screenings.
Pan Am Flight 759 crashed less than one minute after it took off on a stormy afternoon from New Orleans International Airport on July 9, 1982, killing all 146 people on board and eight people on the ground. The Boeing 727 jet plowed into south Kenner’s Morningside Park neighborhood. At the time, it was the nation’s second-deadliest crash.
Pan Am 759 was a regularly scheduled passenger flight from Miami to Las Vegas, with a stop in New Orleans. At the time of Flight 759's takeoff on July 9, 1982, there were thunderstorms over the east end of the airport. Microburst wind shear caused by that afternoon's powerful thunderstorm was blamed for the catastrophe, with the plane rapidly losing altitude almost immediately after taking off. The crash helped spur the development of sophisticated equipment incorporating Doppler radar to detect wind shear.
Royd Anderson specializes in documentary films pertaining to tragic events in Louisiana that he says are overlooked by historians. In 2006, Anderson wrote and directed the documentary The Luling Ferry Disaster for his master's degree thesis project in communication at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. The film recounts the story of the worst ferry disaster in U.S. history in which 77 lives were lost.

Michelle Tea - Knocking Myself Up: A Memoir of (In)Fertility At The Garden District Book Shop
PEN/America Award winner, 2021 Guggenheim fellow, and beloved literary and tarot icon, Michelle Tea will be at The Garden District Book Shop for a lively evening celebrating her latest work Knocking Myself Up: A Memoir of My (In)Fertility, the hilarious, powerfully written, taboo-breaking story of her journey to pregnancy and motherhood as a 40 year-old, queer, uninsured woman.
The event is free and open to the public. Copies of Knocking Myself Up will be available for purchase at The Garden District Book Shop. The event will begin at 6:00 PM with a welcome reception followed by a discussion between Tea and Fallon Young, executive director of the New Orleans Film Society. The two will walk guests through the highs and lows of Tea’s fertility journey. Afterwards, Tea will be available to mingle with guests and personalize books.
Written in intimate, gleeful, TMI prose, Knocking Myself Up is the irreverent account of Tea’s route to parenthood—with a group of ride-or-die friends, a generous drag queen, and a whole lot of can-do pluck. Along the way she falls in love with a wholesome genderqueer a decade her junior, attempts biohacking herself a baby with black market fertility meds (and magicking herself an offspring with witch-enchanted honey), learns her eggs are busted, and enters the Fertility Industrial Complex in order to carry her younger lover’s baby.
With the signature sharp wit and wild heart that have made her a favorite to so many, Tea guides readers through the maze of medical procedures, frustrations, and astonishments on the path to getting pregnant, wryly critiquing some of the systems that facilitate that choice. Tea has crafted a deeply entertaining and profound memoir, a testament to the power of love and family-making, however complex our lives may be, to transform and enrich us.
All citywide-mandated COVID safety protocols will be in place.

ANNOUNCING CULTURE COLLISION 12!
ANNUAL FREE ARTS & CULTURE SHOWCASE RETURNS IN 2022 AFTER A TWO-YEAR HIATUS
WWNO 89.9 FM and Jefferson Performing Arts Society are partnering to bring back Culture Collision! After a two-year pandemic hiatus, Culture Collision 12 returns on Wednesday, September 21, from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. at Jefferson Performing Arts Center in Metairie. The last Culture Collision event was held in August 2019.
Culture Collision is an annual showcase for nonprofit arts and cultural organizations in the New Orleans metro-area. Ranging from the city’s classic arts institutions to its resourceful contemporary newcomers, this happy hour event reflects the diversity of the region’s creative community. The event is free and open to the public—and for this “comeback year”, the fee for organizations to reserve a display table have been waived. Over 60 local arts and culture companies are expected to join, with several of the participating organizations presenting live entertainment.
“From its beginning in 2008, Culture Collision’s aim has been to introduce all kinds of art and cultural activity to people from all parts of the metro area,” said WWNO General Manager, Paul Maassen. “WWNO is delighted that Culture Collision 2022 will carry on this mission and highlight our region’s newest investment in the arts, the Jefferson Performing Arts Center.”
This beloved community arts event is making its debut in Jefferson Parish after over a decade in New Orleans, where it was held at renowned cultural venues such as The National World War Two Museum, The Contemporary Arts Center (CAC), The Ogden Museum, and New Orleans Museum of Art (NOMA).
In July 2022, Jefferson Performing Arts Society was named as the new managers of Jefferson Performing Arts Center. “Our hosting of Culture Collision aligns with our goal to build a wider array of presentations and programming at this gorgeous gem of a venue. We look forward to welcoming arts and cultural organizations of all genres and their audiences here in September to show them all that we have to offer and to let them know that our doors are always open to new opportunities and partnerships,” said Todd Simmons, General Manager of Jefferson Performing Arts Center and Executive Director of Jefferson Performing Arts Society.
Jefferson Performing Arts Center is located at 6400 Airline Drive near the former Zephyr Stadium, not far from the Saints training camp and next to LaSalle Park. Parking in the Jefferson Performing Arts Center adjacent lot is free. For more information visit www.culturenola.com or contact Amy Kirk Duvoisin at [email protected] or 504-885-2000 ext. 212, or Ron Biava at 504-280-7001 or [email protected].
