NATIONAL AIRBORNE DAY
National Airborne Day on August 16th honors the military’s airborne divisions of the Armed Forces.
August 16, 1940, marks the date of the first official Army parachute jump at Ft. Benning, Georgia. The successful jump validated the innovative concept of inserting U.S. ground combat forces behind a battle line by parachute. These sky soldiers represent some of the most prestigious and expertly trained forces in the United States Army.
In the U.S. Army currently, two airborne divisions operate. The 82nd Airborne Division out of Ft. Bragg, North Carolina began as an infantry division. During World War I, the 82nd Division activated on 25 August 1917 at Camp Gordon. In 1918, they earned the nickname All American for the composition of their division. Since the soldiers came not only from all across the country, but several were immigrants, too. The 82nd Division represented all of America as few other divisions did at the time.
The second and still active airborne division had a short-lived beginning. During World War I, the 101st Airborne Division organized for a short while on November 2, 1918. However, the war ended shortly after. During World War II, the Screaming Eagles re-activated on August 16, 1942, at Camp Claiborne, Louisiana. They currently make their home at Ft. Campbell, Kentucky.
Both units have served around the world in combat, peacekeeping, and humanitarian missions.

It will be a drive-thru testing site and walk-up vaccination site

Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson vaccines will be offered at the site.

Appointments are encouraged.

A mass COVID-19 testing and vaccination site returns to the Alario Center in Jefferson Parish. The one-stop-shop testing and vaccination site will be open beginning Monday, August 16, and will operate Monday through Friday from 8 am to 4 pm and Saturday from 8 am to 2 pm.
“We are in a very unfortunate position for our community for the past month, we are averaging about 500 cases a day,” said Sheng. “For perspective, when we go low, in our parish, it is 30 to 60 cases a day.”
The site at the Alario Center, 2000 Segnette Blvd., will offer both COVID-19 drive-thru testing site and a walk-up vaccination site. The vaccines offered will be Pfizer and Johns & Johnson.

NATIONAL ROLLER COASTER DAY
Each year on August 16th, people flock to amusement parks for a thrill, a few exciting screams, and to celebrate National Roller Coaster Day. Take a ride on a roller coaster near you.
The day commemorates the first verticle loop roller coaster which was patented by Edwin Prescott on this day in 1898. A roller coaster consists of one or multiple cars on a track. While they are similar to railroad systems in design, the inclines and vertical loops incorporated in the structures aren’t for transportation. These elements boost the thrills rollercoaster enthusiasts seek!
The oldest roller coasters are believed to have originated from the so-called “Russian Mountains.” Built-in the 17th century, these specially constructed hills of ice located near Saint Petersburg, Russia rose between 70 and 80 feet in height. Passengers faced 50-degree drops. Wooden supports supplied reinforcement.
Roller coaster designs existed since at least 1872 when J.G. Taylor received one of the earliest patents. He called his creation an inclined railway. Another patent granted for an inclined-plane railway was granted to Richard Knudsen in 1878.
For years, history has believed the first roller coaster in America opened at Coney Island on June 26, 1884. However, tracing J.G. Taylor’s patent and newspaper articles tells us a different story. According to the Providence Evening Press dated June 1872, Taylor’s elevated railway at Rocky Point, Rhode Island extended 400 feet and gave nine passengers a ride. It all started with a shove, allowing gravity to do the rest.
While Prescott’s patent detailed ways to improve upon structures such as J.G. Taylor’s and that built at Coney Island, it was Prescott’s designs that led to the roller coasters we know today. His design gave riders a reason to scream and keep coming back for the rush of excitement.
NATIONAL RUM DAY
Join National Rum Day on August 16th as blended beverages and cocktails create a delicious celebration. Rum is a distilled clear alcoholic beverage which is a byproduct of sugar production. It can also be made directly from sugar cane juice. After the fermentation and distillation process, most rum ages in wooden oak barrels.
RUM FACT: In 1764, the British Crown placed a tax on sugar, molasses and rum on the American colonies. This tax was called The Sugar Act of 1764. It was instrumental in the unrest that finally became the American Revolution.
Rum is the third most popular spirit in the United States. Only vodka and all the whiskeys combined beat it for first and second-rankings. The spirit finds its way into citrusy mixed drinks, and cool blended summer cocktails. So much so, that rum stirs up images of sandy beaches and brightly colored umbrellas in fruity drinks.
However, rum also conjures up sailors and pirates. The reason for that is how rum came to be. In the West Indies during the 1600s, large plantations grew sugar cane. When they extracted the sugar, they created a by-product called molasses. For years, the molasses was a waste product until it was discovered it could be distilled – into rum. Then, rum became not only a commodity for trade but also a ration on the ships delivering the product. Even in the modern Royal Navy, British sailors received an allotment of rum until 1970.
Derby Gisclair
Upon exiting Union Station in New Orleans passengers were greeted with a lush green park, shown here in 1917. Designed by acclaimed Chicago architect Louis H. Sullivan for the Illinois Central Railroad, the facility opened on June 1, 1892. It was also utilized by the Southern Pacific Railroad and the Yazoo and Mississippi Valley Railroad.
One of the eleven lines of track had its terminus just to the right of the station itself and lines of horse-drawn wagons on the far right stood ready to carry whatever freight was received. It was torn down in 1954.

LIVE MUSIC FROM THE BRASS-A-HOLICS at the Jazz Playhouse
Since 2010, the Brass-A-Holics have been taking their unique sound around the world. Steeped in the deep musical culture of New Orleans, the band brings a heavy dose of go-go funk to the New Orleans brass sound. In a blending of musical cultures stemming from cities separated by more than a thousand miles, a Brass-a-Holics live show takes the New Orleans brass band culture and infuses it with the electricity of Washington D.C.'s go-go. The resulting sound is both captivating and unique. The band consists of core New Orleans brass elements- trumpet, trombone, saxophone- and adds a full drum set, percussion, keyboard, bass and electric guitar, giving the band limitless options to explore new sonic territory.
*Preferred Seating for small parties only. Parties of 8 or more people must inquire via email to [email protected] to reserve.*

Union Pacific's Big Boy No. 4014, will embark on "The Big Boy 2021 Tour" Aug. 5 to celebrate railroad heritage and the communities Union Pacific serves.
This is the first tour since the locomotive was restored for 2019's "Great Race" tours celebrating the 150th anniversary of the transcontinental railroad’s completion. The multi-year restoration took place at Union Pacific’s steam shop in Cheyenne, Wyoming, following a retirement that spanned six decades.
"Weighing in at 1.2 million pounds, the Big Boy makes a big impression in communities it visits, reminding us of bygone days and the important role the railroad continues to play in our global economy," said Scott Moore, senior vice president – Corporate Relations and chief administrative officer. "This summer, we are proud to announce that the Big Boy will be back to tour through 10 of the states and hundreds of the communities which Union Pacific serves."
No. 4014 will leave the Steam Shop in Cheyenne, Wyoming, August 5, making brief whistle-stops in communities across Arkansas, Colorado, Illinois, Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Texas and Wyoming. The locomotive will be on display in the following cities:

The Saints and Ochsner Health will also be hosting vaccination events on gamedays at the Superdome and around the region.

Sometimes it is indeed better to have things late than never. And that's the case when it comes to Mardi Gras festivities in Jefferson Parish.
Of course, virtually no one got to enjoy the revelry of Mardi Gras in 2021 so local authorities in Jefferson Parish are trying to help folks somewhat make up for the loss of no parades this year.
They want everyone to celebrate with a big ole parade on September 25. And they're calling it "Tardi Gras."

Now, the parade is not set in stone, but a vote by the Parish Council will come this Wednesday, July 14th, and it's expected to be approved.
“I’m excited about it,” said Carnival Historian Arthur Hardy. “We need to do something positive and Mardi Gras even a fake Mardi Gras is something that brings people together. And I’ll really be surprised if this isn’t a very positive event. I think it’s going to be cool.”
The projected parade route will combine the old with the new. Tardi Gras will parade on Metairie Road, which hasn't been done in years.
