NATIONAL BE AN ANGEL DAY | AUGUST 22

On August 22nd, National Be an Angel Day encourages good deeds and kindness to others. By supporting those in need and inspiring others to kindness, we display an act of an angel here on earth.

The day also recognizes those who’ve been angels to us. Sometimes we have a terrible day. Whether its bad news or poor planning, we all have them. A kind word, a hug, or even a pleasant atmosphere makes a difference.

Other times, days, even weeks, can be devastating. A loss, illness, or overwhelming news takes the wind from our sails. Those angels provide comfort at a time when we need it most.

The same happens to the people around us. We don’t always know what others may be enduring. We can be an angel in big and small ways. Whether we know a person’s concerns or not, merely offering to join them for a meal may relieve their stress. Having someone to listen to often is something we need most.

Noticing someone’s efforts is another way we can be an angel. Letting them know you’re impressed with their stamina, talent, progress – fill in the blanks. These positive comments provide morale-boosting energy.

Any time we see someone in need, the opportunity arises to offer help. Assist an elderly neighbor with lawn care. Don’t overlook the single parents when setting up play dates. Their children – and the parents – need social interaction, too.

Also, when you value someone’s time, effort, and presence, don’t hesitate to tell them. We may be individual people, but we don’t thrive alone. Look out for each other.

Louisiana’s latest popular ‘I voted’ stickers are out

By: The Advertiser

New Orleans artist Becky Fos said she was inspired to create the painting that has become the image of Louisiana’s latest “I voted” sticker by both her predecessors and her state’s own vibe.

Fos, known as the “Happy Artist” for her bright colors, painted Louisiana’s iconic state Capitol drenched in primary colors using a pallet knife rather than a brush to make her master strokes of undiluted oil on canvas.

“I wanted to capture the spirit of Louisiana with the colors of Louisiana,” Fos said at the unveiling of her painting and stickers during a press conference Tuesday at the Old State Capitol.

Her painting is called “Louisiana State of Mind.”

Republican Secretary of State Kyle Ardoin commissioned Fos to create the inspiration for the state’s third “I voted” sticker following the late iconic artist George Rodrigue’s Blue Dog in 2016 and Lafayette artist Tony Bernard’s King George pelican in 2019.

“Louisiana voters are passionate about their ‘I voted’ stickers,” Ardoin said. “One of my favorite parts of elections is the excitement these stickers generate. You see voters taking selfies with them and posting them on their various social media platforms.”

Fos said she has been one of those voters who looked forward to showing off the stickers.

“After the first two, I wondered, ‘What’s next?’” she said. “So when they called me, I said, ‘I’d love to.’ It was a no-brainer.”

More than 2 million of the Fos stickers will be available to voters for the Nov. 8 election and during early voting that begins Oct. 25. Ardoin said his agency paid $15,292 for the stickers to promote voting.

Fos said the pressure of creating such a high profile project was present, but was also a motivation.

“It’s always difficult to follow two amazing artists like George Rodrigue and Tony,” she said. “But the excitement and inspiration overcame the stress.”

Louisiana’s “I voted” stickers have been wildly popular among voters and collectors. The Blue Dog and King George pelican stickers are still sold on eBay for as much as $10 or more. The 2019 King George design has earned a national award for originality and creativity from the U.S. Election Assistance Commission.

“My hope is the excitement over the stickers inspires more people to vote,” Fos said.

We called a Entergy- they came out and made sure our box was good (of course it was) and the service man said everyone needs to call Louisiana service commission at 225-342-4999 and file a formal complaint or nothing would change!

NATIONAL BAO DAY | AUGUST 22

On August 22nd, National Bao Day guarantees your taste buds will be shouting “Wow!” Why? Because ancient Chinese gastronomic delicacies often cause oohs and ahhs on food holidays.

#NationalBaoDay

At first one might consider it to be just a simple steamed bun. Dumplings aside, this is the flavorful Chinese dough used to make bāozi, or bao. It’s also stuffed with savory meats or sweets. More than a side dish, bao is a type of sandwich. And, this delicious meal grabs attention in the United States. That’s why it’s gaining popularity at every mealtime of the day.

There are excellent reasons, too! Created as an elegant package, bao fits in the palm of the hand making it portable. Bao satisfies with all our favorite flavors. From spicy to sweet, BBQ and Thai, this little sandwich covers breakfast, lunch, supper, and dessert. Still hungry? They’re great snacks and perfect for sharing, too.

Definition

fond of company; sociable

Example

He was the life of the party, a gregarious spirit!

Despite the popular axiom, at one time there really was such a thing as a “free lunch.” As chronicled in William H. Coleman’s 1885 “Historical Sketch Book and Guide to New Orleans,” the free lunch was instituted at the barroom of the old St. Louis Hotel in 1837 by a gentleman named Alvarez. The majority of business at the time was conducted in the French Quarter, but the businessmen lived “as far down as the lower cotton presses, and some as high up as Julia Street,” which did not give them time to return home in the middle of the day for a small lunch and they complained that the restaurant prices were too high, offering a full meal of several courses when all they wanted was a bowl of soup and a sandwich.

In 1841, a fire destroyed The St. Louis Exchange on St. Louis Street between Royal and Chartres Streets. The Saint Louis Hotel emerged from the ashes and opened its doors in early summer of 1843 to 600 guests on its three floors and elegant ballrooms. Around the turn of the century, the building was sold back to the state, and it closed its doors. This photograph is undated, but in the foreground, we see that construction has just begun on the site for the Louisiana Supreme Court building which began in 1908.

As the French Quarter decayed, so did the St. Louis hotel. Tours were led through the decrepit interiors until the great hurricane of 1915 did such extensive damage that the building was later torn down.

Zony Mash is proud to be the home of Rebirth Brass Band EVERY Tuesday

Doors at 7pm, Show at 8pm

Whether seen on HBO’s Treme or at their legendary Tuesday night gig at The Maple Leaf, Grammy-winning Rebirth Brass Band is a true New Orleans institution. Formed in 1983 by the Frazier brothers, the band has evolved from playing the streets of the French Quarter to playing festivals and stages all over the world. While committed to upholding the tradition of brass bands, they’ve also extended themselves into the realms of funk and hip-hop to create their signature sound. “Rebirth can be precise whenever it wants to,” says The New York Times, “but it’s more like a party than a machine. It’s a working model of the New Orleans musical ethos: as long as everybody knows what they’re doing, anyone can cut loose.” In the wake of the sometimes- stringent competition amongst New Orleans brass bands, Rebirth is the undisputed leader of the pack, and they show no signs of slowing down

The extra screenings are occurring because of the overwhelming popularity of the documentary. A previous screening on Saturday, July 9 during an estimated crowd of 175, some of whom could not get into the room to view the documentary.
screening is free of charge and open to the public. Registration is not required. The filmmaker will be present at the screenings.
Pan Am Flight 759 crashed less than one minute after it took off on a stormy afternoon from New Orleans International Airport on July 9, 1982, killing all 146 people on board and eight people on the ground. The Boeing 727 jet plowed into south Kenner’s Morningside Park neighborhood. At the time, it was the nation’s second-deadliest crash.
Pan Am 759 was a regularly scheduled passenger flight from Miami to Las Vegas, with a stop in New Orleans. At the time of Flight 759's takeoff on July 9, 1982, there were thunderstorms over the east end of the airport. Microburst wind shear caused by that afternoon's powerful thunderstorm was blamed for the catastrophe, with the plane rapidly losing altitude almost immediately after taking off. The crash helped spur the development of sophisticated equipment incorporating Doppler radar to detect wind shear.
Royd Anderson specializes in documentary films pertaining to tragic events in Louisiana that he says are overlooked by historians. In 2006, Anderson wrote and directed the documentary The Luling Ferry Disaster for his master's degree thesis project in communication at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. The film recounts the story of the worst ferry disaster in U.S. history in which 77 lives were lost.

Covington Block Party

This long-running last-Friday-of-the-month event closes the 200 to 500 blocks of Columbia Street, providing lots of opportuni4es for fun on foot. The classic car people and the shop owners will be handing out goodies accordingly, plus live music at local venues. Shops and restaurants open late, too. 6 pm–9 pm. Free. The Kiwanis Club of Greater Covington will be out in full force, selling hamburgers, hot dogs, beverages, and snacks to raise funds for its many charitable efforts. “ Our block party brings people from across a Tri-Parish area, to show and see classic cars. Michelle Tea - Knocking Myself Up: A Memoir of (In)Fertility At The Garden District Book Shop

PEN/America Award winner, 2021 Guggenheim fellow, and beloved literary and tarot icon, Michelle Tea will be at The Garden District Book Shop for a lively evening celebrating her latest work Knocking Myself Up: A Memoir of My (In)Fertility,  the hilarious, powerfully written, taboo-breaking story of her journey to pregnancy and motherhood as a 40 year-old, queer, uninsured woman.

The event is free and open to the public. Copies of Knocking Myself Up will be available for purchase at The Garden District Book Shop.  The event will begin at 6:00 PM with a welcome reception followed by a discussion between Tea and Fallon Young, executive director of the New Orleans Film Society. The two will walk guests through the highs and lows of Tea’s fertility journey. Afterwards, Tea will be available to mingle with guests and  personalize books.

Written in intimate, gleeful, TMI prose, Knocking Myself Up is the irreverent account of Tea’s route to parenthood—with a group of ride-or-die friends, a generous drag queen, and a whole lot of can-do pluck. Along the way she falls in love with a wholesome genderqueer a decade her junior, attempts biohacking herself a baby with black market fertility meds (and magicking herself an offspring with witch-enchanted honey), learns her eggs are busted, and enters the Fertility Industrial Complex in order to carry her younger lover’s baby.

With the signature sharp wit and wild heart that have made her a favorite to so many, Tea guides readers through the maze of medical procedures, frustrations, and astonishments on the path to getting pregnant, wryly critiquing some of the systems that facilitate that choice. Tea has crafted a deeply entertaining and profound memoir, a testament to the power of love and family-making, however complex our lives may be, to transform and enrich us.

All citywide-mandated COVID safety protocols will be in place.

ANNOUNCING CULTURE COLLISION 12!
ANNUAL FREE ARTS & CULTURE SHOWCASE RETURNS IN 2022 AFTER A TWO-YEAR HIATUS

WWNO 89.9 FM and Jefferson Performing Arts Society are partnering to bring back Culture Collision! After a two-year pandemic hiatus, Culture Collision 12 returns on Wednesday, September 21, from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. at Jefferson Performing Arts Center in Metairie. The last Culture Collision event was held in August 2019.
Culture Collision is an annual showcase for nonprofit arts and cultural organizations in the New Orleans metro-area. Ranging from the city’s classic arts institutions to its resourceful contemporary newcomers, this happy hour event reflects the diversity of the region’s creative community. The event is free and open to the public—and for this “comeback year”, the fee for organizations to reserve a display table have been waived. Over 60 local arts and culture companies are expected to join, with several of the participating organizations presenting live entertainment.
“From its beginning in 2008, Culture Collision’s aim has been to introduce all kinds of art and cultural activity to people from all parts of the metro area,” said WWNO General Manager, Paul Maassen. “WWNO is delighted that Culture Collision 2022 will carry on this mission and highlight our region’s newest investment in the arts, the Jefferson Performing Arts Center.”
This beloved community arts event is making its debut in Jefferson Parish after over a decade in New Orleans, where it was held at renowned cultural venues such as The National World War Two Museum, The Contemporary Arts Center (CAC), The Ogden Museum, and New Orleans Museum of Art (NOMA).
In July 2022, Jefferson Performing Arts Society was named as the new managers of Jefferson Performing Arts Center. “Our hosting of Culture Collision aligns with our goal to build a wider array of presentations and programming at this gorgeous gem of a venue. We look forward to welcoming arts and cultural organizations of all genres and their audiences here in September to show them all that we have to offer and to let them know that our doors are always open to new opportunities and partnerships,” said Todd Simmons, General Manager of Jefferson Performing Arts Center and Executive Director of Jefferson Performing Arts Society.
Jefferson Performing Arts Center is located at 6400 Airline Drive near the former Zephyr Stadium, not far from the Saints training camp and next to LaSalle Park. Parking in the Jefferson Performing Arts Center adjacent lot is free.
