  • August 8 is International Cat Day — a day to celebrate one of man’s most common and ancient pets. They have even been worshiped as gods (we see you, Egypt.) Well, it is not surprising, Cats are one of the coolest beings on the planet: they are independent, inquisitive, adventurous, have an amazing physiognomy, and the power to heal by themselves — at least most of the time.

Clear the Shelters event is happening NOW! The Louisiana SPCA is close to capacity with nearly 530 animals in our care, and we are urging the community to adopt during the national Clear the Shelters adoption event.
From today until August 31st, adoption fees will be reduced for dogs and cats over than 6-months-old at both Louisiana SPCA campuses. Each adoptable will be vaccinated, spayed or neutered, and microchipped. Each adoption will also include a free bag of pet food and every dog adopted will come with a discount on GoodPup online training. Normal adoption procedures will apply during Clear the Shelters.
Tired of being ripped off

We called a Entergy- they came out and made sure our box was good (of course it was) and the service man said everyone needs to call Louisiana service commission at 225-342-4999 and file a formal complaint or nothing would change!
I say let’s blow their phone up!
NATIONAL FROZEN CUSTARD DAY | AUGUST 8
When it comes to scooping up a delicious celebration, National Frozen Custard Day on August 8th knows how to do it right. With a smooth texture and fresh flavor, frozen custard delights in many ways.

Similar to ice cream, frozen custard is made with eggs in addition to cream and sugar. The dessert comes in several flavors, too. Franchises and custard shops all across the country cater to perfecting this creamy dessert and all its delicious options. Mixing it up with toppings such as syrups, nuts and fruits, custard is another satisfying version of ice cream.
In fact, ice cream vendors, Archie and Elton Kohr invented frozen custard on Coney Island, New York in 1919. They found that adding egg yolks to ice cream created a smoother texture and helped the ice cream stay cold longer. On their first weekend, the Kohr brothers sold 18,640 cones on the boardwalk.
More Frozen Custard Facts
  • Its popularity grew in 1933 when frozen custard found a market at the World’s Fair in Chicago.
  • Milwaukee, Wisconsin became known as the unofficial frozen custard capital of the world.
  • The United States Food and Drug Administration requires frozen custard products to contain at least 10 percent milkfat and 1.4 percent egg yolk solids.
  • Because of the egg yolk, frozen custard must be carefully prepared.
  • Frozen custard is commonly prepared fresh at the place of sale.

NATIONAL HAPPINESS HAPPENS DAY | AUGUST 8
Smile on August 8th to share in National Happiness Happens Day. On this day each year just let it happen. You know. Happiness. Because happiness happens.

The day encourages happiness all day. Recognize every moment of glee, joy, delight, and pleasure. Don’t let it pass. Most importantly, a flicker of a giggle should be given its due, and should it blossom into full-blown happiness, don’t be surprised. It happens!
For every minute you are angry you lose sixty seconds of happiness. Ralph Waldo Emerson
Another element of the day prohibits the squashing of other people’s happiness. From time to time, we might find other’s happiness might seem irritating. Those moments happen when we have particularly rotten days. However, our bad days don’t give us the right to squash another person’s joy. Instead, allow their delight in the day to infect us. Perhaps, their ability to smile will blow the storm clouds away from your day.

VENDOR OF THE WEEK:
Cicada Calling Farm
With a bountiful display of bright bouquets, canned goods, melons, squash, eggplant, and more, you can’t miss the addition of Cicada Calling Farm to Thursday market! Run by Becks Hilliard & Sierra Torres, Cicada Calling is a 2-acre diversified vegetable and cut flower farm in Southeast Louisiana. As two young farmers from Louisiana, Becks & Sierra believe farming in the Gulf South is an act of resistance towards a disappearing community that has been ravaged by climate change and the petrochemical industry. Their beliefs are evident in their practice: they are a no-till, naturally grown farm and source a majority of their seed from cooperative seed growers in the South as a means of growing food better adapted to our climate and to increase the seed biodiversity of our region. For Becks & Sierra, Cicada Calling Farm is not just a business, but an intentional decision to invest in a future for Louisiana and create alternative economies, structures, and systems to support, heal, and nourish our community. Swing on by Thursday market and give a warm welcome to Cicada Calling!

Whether seen on HBO’s Treme or at their legendary Tuesday night gig at The Maple Leaf, Grammy-winning Rebirth Brass Band is a true New Orleans institution. Formed in 1983 by the Frazier brothers, the band has evolved from playing the streets of the French Quarter to playing festivals and stages all over the world. While committed to upholding the tradition of brass bands, they’ve also extended themselves into the realms of funk and hip-hop to create their signature sound. “Rebirth can be precise whenever it wants to,” says The New York Times, “but it’s more like a party than a machine. It’s a working model of the New Orleans musical ethos: as long as everybody knows what they’re doing, anyone can cut loose.” In the wake of the sometimes- stringent competition amongst New Orleans brass bands, Rebirth is the undisputed leader of the pack, and they show no signs of slowing down

The Tennessee Williams Theatre Company of New Orleans returns to The Marigny Opera House for the first time since 2019 this August 2022 with Tennessee Williams’ glorious gothic drama, SUMMER & SMOKE!

Tennessee Williams’ devastating drama about things that could have been and the things that might never come again. Alma Winemiller (Elizabeth McCoy) is a minister’s daughter who grew up too fast in the shadow of the church and with the responsibility of caring for her demented mother. She pined for the uninhibited, passionate boy next door (Co-Starring Justin Davis) all through her youth, and now he’s returned to his hometown…and the torch Alma holds for him has never burned more brightly. Will her own fire consume her, or will she be smothered by the expectations and repression she’s grown so used to? And what if he’s not still there when she comes around? Will his heat be nothing but smoking cinders come autumn?

So swift is the action, so involved the situations, so rib-tickling the plot in this London hit that at its finish audiences are left as exhausted from laughter as though they had run a foot race. Galloping in and out of the four doors of an English vicarage are an American actor and actress (he is now stationed with the Air Force in England), a cockney maid who has seen too many American movies, an old maid who “touches alcohol for the first time in her life,” four men in clergyman suits presenting the problem of which is which (for disguised as one is an escaped prisoner), and a sedate Bishop aghast at all these goings-on and the trumped up stories they tell him. [Rated: PG]PURCHASE TICKETS

Don your soiled white linen from the weekend before for the annual gallery stroll through Royal Street Arts District

Enjoy an evening with 30 galleries located in the French Quarter in New Orleans for Dirty Linen Night.
Experience REAL New Orleans Culture while walking the streets of the French Quarter and experiencing all of the art, food and drinks that this city has to offer.
This year Dirty Linen Night celebrates its 19th year on Royal Street. After passing through many organizations and planning committees over the 19 years, the event has landed safely back in the arms of the shops and galleries along Royal Street under the planning of the newly formed Royal Street Arts District since 2017. The RSAD is a nonprofit organization that plans and executes Dirty Linen Night each year with the galleries and shops playing host to visitors and locals that want a dash of art, a taste of good food, and some cocktails.
Born as a satirical play on White Linen Night, DLN invites participants to relish in everything dirty, and is the one event that celebrates the not so pristine side of the French Quarter.
Galleries and shops along Royal Street open their doors and play host to visitors as musicians line the streets and the party feels never ending.
The event has grown to include some galleries and shops off of Royal Street and has expanded from the 300 block of Royal to 1100 block.
Slated as one of the best events in the French Quarter, DLN has grown in the past three years to be ranked with some of the major events on the New Orleans calendar.

Mrs. Thomas is a Grammy winning, soul, gospel, rhythm and blues singer from New Orleans. Known as the "Soul Queen of New Orleans", she is a contemporary of the late Aretha Franklin and Etta James. She was awarded a Grammy for her 2006 Rounder album " After the Rain". She won The Best Contemporary Blues Album Grammy again for her 2008 album "Simply Grand".
Releasing her first single in 1959, Thomas is perhaps best known outside of New Orleans for her recording of "Time Is On My Side," which predated the hit version by the Rolling Stones. Otis Redding's hit "Pain In My Heart" was built on an earlier song, "Ruler of My Heart," recorded by Thomas.
