SAINT NICHOLAS DAY
On December 6th, Saint Nicholas Day recognizes the third-century saint who became an inspiration for the modern-day Santa Claus.
St. Nicholas is known for selling all his possessions and giving his money to the poor. Raised as a devout Christian, St. Nicholas dedicated his whole life to serving the sick and suffering.
Legendary stories about St. Nicholas later become part of the inspiration for the modern-day Santa Claus. For example, during the third century, a daughter’s chances of marriage increased when her father offered a large dowry to prospective husbands. One story tells of a poor father with three daughters. He had no dowry to offer.

Traditionally, families left their shoes by the fires at night so that they could dry. On three separate occasions, Ol’ St. Nicholas provided a dowry for each girl. Legend says he made gold appear in their shoes, drying by the fire.
While St. Nicholas Day is not to be confused with Christmas, some similarities do exist. Traditions include leaving gifts in shoes (or stockings) or the exchange of small gifts. Another tradition suggests leaving treats for good boys and girls. However, the naughty ones receive a twig or chunk of coal.
Interesting facts associated with St. Nicholas:
  • He is the patron saint of a great many causes. Some of the causes include sailors, travelers, clergy, school children, and thieves, to name a few.
  • He was born in the village of Patar, located on the southeastern coast of modern-day Turkey.
  • Buried in a tomb in Myra, water believed to have healing powers formed in his grave. It is called the Manna of Saint Nicholas.
  • December 6th is also known as The Feast of St. Nicholas, widely celebrated in Europe.
Residents in Jefferson Parish will be once again able to utilize recycling services offered by the parish
"Loads are expected to be heavy and delays are anticipated. During the first week, every effort will be made to collect material on the regularly scheduled pick-up day. As the situation stabilizes, trucks will return to areas to collect any remaining material in neighborhoods that were missed on their designated day," the parish announced in a Tuesday press release.
Paper, cardboard, plastic containers #1-2, aluminum cans and bimetal cans are the only items that are being encouraged for recyclable use. Material shouldn't be placed in plastic bags. Glass and items containing food or other waste will not be accepted as part of the program's resumption.

New phase in Charity Hospital redevelopment
A longtime effort to redevelop the former Charity Hospital has entered a new phase as Tulane University signed a lease agreement to occupy over a third of the 1 million-square-foot structure.
Tulane will be the core tenant of the building, which has been vacant since Hurricane Katrina. The university announced the lease on Monday to fill 350,000 square feet of space with research, teaching and administrative functions.
The remainder of the structure will have 300 residential units, a charter high school, an early learning center and retail components, according to a plan approved in 2019 by the Louisiana Board of Supervisors, who chose 1532 Tulane Partners as the master developer.
Construction had been expected to begin in late 2019 but has been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Project manager Joe St. Martin said in January that he expected interior demolition and abatement to start this year. Recent efforts to reach developers for an update have been unsuccessful.
The project is “a central component of a major expansion of Tulane’s downtown campus in the heart of the city’s biomedical corridor,” a news release from the university said. It wants to bring together more labs and scientists downtown, launch spinout companies, support local startups and attract outside investment to “transform New Orleans into a hub of bioscience research,” the release said. The university said its external funding for research is expected to continue rising over the next few years in order to support a startup community downtown.
Over the next two and half years, 1532 Tulane Partners and SKK Opportunity Zone Fund I LLC will complete base building construction before Tulane develops its space, the release said. Tulane said its goal is to occupy the building in 2025.
1532 Tulane Partners is a partnership between the U.S. branch of El-Ad Holdings, an Israel-based real estate development company, and CCNO Development, a developer-builder based in New Orleans. SKK Opportunity Zone Fund I LLC is under Shepherd Kaplan Krochuk, a Boston-based investment firm.
The release said that the former hospital’s iconic Art Deco-style façade, main lobby, second-floor auditorium and other historic characteristics will be retained during the renovation.
The $300 million development will be funded with Historic Tax Credits and traditional construction and permanent financing, developers have said. The property is in a Qualified Opportunity Zone, part of the Tax Cut and Jobs Act of 2017 that was created to revitalize economically distressed communities by offering tax incentives for private investment dollars.
Work on other projects near the former hospital has been completed, including a $55 million renovation of the former Warwick Hotel into housing for some of Tulane’s students and faculty..

Infamy: Pearl Harbor Remembered
THE NATIONAL WWII MUSEUM'S NEWEST SPECIAL EXHIBIT
On display until – June 26, 2022 in The Joe W. and Dorothy D. Brown Foundation Special Exhibit Gallery
In commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor, Infamy: Pearl Harbor Remembered reflects on the devastating events of December 7, 1941. By spurring the US Congress to declare war on Japan and serving as a rallying cry for the US war effort, the attack on Pearl Harbor has become known as a catalyst for America’s entry into World War II—and focal point when considering their actions during the war.

Rather than concentrate on the events of the day, this new special exhibit examines how the attack has been remembered both during the war and since. Utilizing artifacts, images, oral histories, and video productions, Infamy encourages visitors to think beyond what they already know about the infamous day and consider it as a part of the whole—the timeline that led up to it, the American identity still shaped by it, and even other moments since that have inspired similar unity across our nation.

Most of all, the exhibit seeks to provide visitors with new insights and personal reflections regarding one of the most consequential events in American history. It will be on display in The Joe W. and Dorothy D. Brown Foundation Special Exhibit Gallery from November 17, 2021 through June 26, 2022.

NATIONAL MICROWAVE OVEN DAY
On December 6th, National Microwave Oven Day honors one appliance that changed how we use the kitchen.
Quite by accident, self-taught American engineer Percy Spencer discovered a way to heat food safely with microwaves. While working with an active radar in 1945, he noticed a melting chocolate bar in his pocket. The high-powered microwave beams created a heating effect ideal for cooking. Spencer deliberately attempted cooking popcorn with the microwaves. Next, he tried cooking an egg. Both the popcorn and the egg created dramatic results. However, the popcorn resulted in success, unlike the egg. The egg exploded in his fellow engineer’s face! However, we can cook eggs in microwave ovens. Try poaching one.
Spencer, employed by Raytheon, continued experimenting with different methods of heating food safely with microwaves.
  • Raytheon filed a United States patent application for Spencer’s microwave cooking process on October 8th, 1945.
  • In 1947, Raytheon built the first commercially available microwave oven. It was called the “Radarange.”
  • An estimated 90% of homes in the United States have a microwave in them.
NATIONAL GAZPACHO DAY
National Gazpacho Day, on December 6th, recognizes a flavorful soup that cooks serve cold. This typically tomato-based vegetable soup originated in the southern Spanish region of Andalucia. Gazpacho is widely consumed in Spanish cuisine, usually during the summer months.
The original Spanish recipe includes stale bread, water, vinegar, oil and salt. Other ingredients include olive oil, wine, vinegar, water, and salt.
Following is the typical method of preparing gazpacho:

  • Washing vegetables
  • Peeling tomatoes, garlic, and onions.
  • Chop all vegetables (traditionally pounded with mortar) and process in a food processor.
  • Add the soaked bread.
  • Blend part of the processed contents until liquid, depending on desired consistency.
  • Blend in chilled water, olive oil, vinegar, and salt to taste.
  • Add remaining processed ingredients.
  • Garnish as desired.
Gazpacho offers cooks many modern variations. Abundant fresh fruits, vegetables, and herbs make a delicious gazpacho, too. Consider using ingredients such as avocados, cucumbers, parsley, watermelon, or grapes. However, recipes offer meat stock and seafood varieties for gazpacho, too. Don’t hesitate to try something new. If the grocery offers something fresh on special, look for a recipe that will get you experimenting. You won’t regret trying something fresh, especially in the fall or winter. Your palate will thank you for the fresh spices, herbs, and vegetables.
Even though we serve gazpacho cold, some recipes call for a cooked broth. When the gazpacho is too warm, sometimes ice cubes are added.
linchpin
[ LINCH-PIN ]
Part of Speech noun
Origin + Etymology
Late middle English from Old English lynis (in the sense ‘linchpin’) + pin

Synonyms
  • centercorecornerstone
Antonyms
  • unavailable
Definition
a person or thing vital to an enterprise or organization
Example
Rachel is the linchpin of the operation and the business could not go on without her.

Demand for cotton quickly resulted in the realization that a steamer could carry more cotton if it was compressed into bales. Across the city, large compresses were erected at a cost ranging from $20,000 to $40,000 ($575,000 to $1.15 million today) in warehouses along the river. Pictured here is one such cotton press from 1890. There were between 25 and 30 cotton presses active, mostly in the upper First District from Delord Street to Felicity Street, and from Magazine Street to Water Street.
After picking, cotton bales are placed into a cotton gin where seeds are separated from fiber. The accumulated fiber is shipped from the farm to the cotton press where it is fed into the top of the machine seen here. The steam powered giant then compresses the cotton until it becomes the size of one of the large bales seen on the left side of the photograph. These have been wrapped in burlap and secured with either iron or rope ties. Each large bale weighs approximately 500-pounds.
Newly compressed bales are then transported to the port where the shipping company paid about $0.40 per bale for the compressed cargo. Riverboats like the Natchez or the J.M. White could carry as many 5,000 bales although the average load was closer to 3,500 bales. Once woven into cloth, each bale would produce 8,340 handkerchiefs, 760 men's shirts, 290 men's jeans, 900 women's blouses, 3650 women's jeans, 210 full-size sheets, and 3,670 men's socks.

David Young
“The first thing you notice about New Orleans are the burying grounds - the cemeteries - and they’re a cold proposition, one of the best things there are here. Going by, you try to be as quiet as possible, better to let them sleep. Greek, Roman, sepulchres- palatial mausoleums made to order, phantomesque, signs and symbols of hidden decay - ghosts of women and men who have sinned and who’ve died and are now living in tombs. The past doesn’t pass away so quickly here. You could be dead for a long time.“ –Bob Dylan

Citywide contemporary art triennial returns to Royal Street galleries
NEW ORLEANS— The Historic New Orleans Collection (THNOC) will host three installations of the citywide contemporary art triennial Prospect.5, titled “Yesterday we said through Jan. 23, 2022, at 520 and 533 Royal St. in New Orleans. Ticketed admission is free, and proof of COVID-19 vaccination or a negative PCR test is required for admission at all THNOC properties.

The Prospect.5 exhibitions on view at THNOC are:

  • A display of photographs by New Orleans artist and photographer George Dureau.

  • An exhibition by cultural historian Josh Kun recalling the 8th Cavalry Mexican Military Band’s memorable visit to the 1884 World’s Industrial and Cotton Centennial Exposition.

“The Historic New Orleans Collection is pleased to again host Prospect New Orleans installations,” said Daniel Hammer, THNOC President and CEO. “These exhibits speak to our mission, which is dedicated to stewardship of the history and culture of New Orleans and the Gulf South. We invite all New Orleanians and visitors to the city to experience these historically focused, thought-provoking installations.”

Keith and Diana Nawi. For more information, visit Prospect5.org

New Orleans, LA 70125

Duration: 2 hr
Public

Whether seen on HBO’s Treme or at their legendary Tuesday night gig at The Maple Leaf, Grammy-winning Rebirth Brass Band is a true New Orleans institution. Formed in 1983 by the Frazier brothers, the band has evolved from playing the streets of the French Quarter to playing festivals and stages all over the world. While committed to upholding the tradition of brass bands, they’ve also extended themselves into the realms of funk and hip-hop to create their signature sound. “Rebirth can be precise whenever it wants to,” says The New York Times, “but it’s more like a party than a machine. It’s a working model of the New Orleans musical ethos: as long as everybody knows what they’re doing, anyone can cut loose.” In the wake of the sometimes- stringent competition amongst New Orleans brass bands, Rebirth is the undisputed leader of the pack, and they show no signs of slowing down.

For this event, proof of COVID vaccination (or recent negative PCR test) will be required at the door, and masking while in the venue is mandatory, in accordance with city regulations.

All advance tickets for this event will be held at will call starting one hour prior to the performance. Subscriptions and single tickets are available at the door.
  • Regular admission: $35
  • Age 35 and Under: $18
  • Students with ID: Free, at the door only
  • Subscriptions: $175 (seven concerts) / $105 (age 35 and under)
We encourage patrons to arrive early to allow ample time for parking and check-in at the box office. Pontchartrain Astronomy Society and the JPL

Host an Evening of Gazing at the Stars

METAIRIE, LA – A night of gazing at the stars will occur at approximately 6 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 8, at the Wagner Library, 6646 Riverside Drive, Metairie. The event will occur outside in a clear area on the east side of the library – away from lights.

This event is free of charge and open to the public. There is plenty of parking available for patrons.

The Pontchartrain Astronomy Society is sponsoring the event. Members will bring telescopes to view the nighttime sky. About six telescopes will be present for viewers, though others may bring their own telescopes.

Targets (depending on sight lines) - Jupiter will be at 38 degrees above the horizon towards the south-southwest with Saturn a little lower at 25 degrees and the moon lower still at 20 degrees. There will be a space station pass-over from the southwest towards the southeast at 6:40 p.m. and it will travel sight-wise between Jupiter and the moon so it should be easy to spot.

In case of bad weather, this event will be rescheduled at another time.

The Pontchartrain Astronomy Society is a non-profit astronomy club with a membership of nearly 130 individuals and families, mainly from the Southeast Louisiana and Southern Mississippi areas. PAS members come from many walks of life and have diverse interests in amateur astronomy. PAS members promote an understanding and appreciation of astronomy in the community, sharing time and telescopes to engage the public with unique astronomy experiences.

LIVE MUSIC FROM THE BRASS-A-HOLICS at the Jazz Playhouse
Since 2010, the Brass-A-Holics have been taking their unique sound around the world. Steeped in the deep musical culture of New Orleans, the band brings a heavy dose of go-go funk to the New Orleans brass sound. In a blending of musical cultures stemming from cities separated by more than a thousand miles, a Brass-a-Holics live show takes the New Orleans brass band culture and infuses it with the electricity of Washington D.C.'s go-go. The resulting sound is both captivating and unique.
*Preferred Seating for small parties only. Parties of 8 or more people must inquire via email to cwhitney@sonesta.com to reserve.*

**Special Event valet rate - $5/vehicle. Please provide ticket to event staff for validation. Garage entryways located on both the Bienville and Conti sides of the hotel.

Mayor's Neighborhood Engagement Office Now Accepting Applications for CleanUpNOLA Community Impact Grants
The Mayor's Neighborhood Engagement Office is now accepting applications for Community Impact Grants to help bring green infrastructure and beautification to New Orleans neighborhoods through CleanUpNOLA.

The CleanUpNOLA Community Impact Grant is designed to encourage residents to engage with their neighborhood by way of developing a beautification or “Green Infrastructure” project as a community. We encourage residents, organizations and community leaders to work together in an ongoing effort to maintain pride in their community and global well-being.

Applicants must meet each of the following criteria:
  • Be a member of any formal or informal neighborhood/community association
  • Be a resident of Orleans Parish
  • 18 years of age or older
  • 501(c)3 designation (for formal associations) or Federal tax ID number (for informal association)
To be considered for the grant, proposed projects should be feasible, inclusive and open to every resident in the neighborhood. Applications should include realistic project goals and details explaining specifically what the project will do, what it might cost, what it will do for the benefit of the entire neighborhood and a component focused on green infrastructure — tree planting, rain barrel installation, etc.

Once a grant is awarded, grantees will then participate in a community clean-up/green infrastructure workshop, appoint a neighborhood clean-up coordinator, and work with the Neighborhood Engagement Office on next steps.

The application deadline is Monday, Dec. 6, 2021, by 5 p.m.

Based on the beloved holiday film, this hilarious fish-out-of-water comedy follows Buddy the Elf in his quest to find his true identity.
Elf features songs by Tony Award nominees Matthew Sklar (The Wedding Singer) and Chad Beguelin (Disney's Aladdin on Broadway), with a book by Tony Award winners, Thomas Meehan (Annie, The Producers, Hairspray) and Bob Martin (The Drowsy Chaperone). This modern-day holiday classic is sure to put the whole family in the Christmas spirit, and make them embrace their inner elf. After all, "the best way to spread Christmas Cheer is singing loud for all to hear".

OTHER NEWS
Here it is the end of the year and I still haven’t written my letter to Santa. As usual, everything I want is impossible or too expensive, so it looks like I’ll still be driving that old van for at least another year.
Here’s a good holiday tip: Never catch snowflakes with your tongue until all the birds have gone south for the winter. Here in New Orleans, that’s a year round commitment.

The 2022 King Cake Coterie is on sale now with exciting new offerings and a discount for early shoppers. The Coterie is a King Cake of the Week Club featuring a different king cake each week. Brennan’s is launching Season 4 and then Cannata’s will be debuting a new Salted Caramel King Cake which is sure to be a hit. NOCCA, Bywater, Gracious, Gambino’s and Caluda’s will also be included. The Coterie makes a great holiday gift. In addition to the early bird discount the first 30 Subscribers will receive one of our amazing t-shirts by Studio Mundi!

This will be a bittersweet year as we mourn the loss of Will Samuels who had the crazy genius idea to bring all your favorite king cakes to one shop. Will’s wife and daughter will proudly and joyously continue the legacy which has delighted and overwhelmed king cake lovers for three years.

King Cake Hub will be open daily from 8:30am until 6:00pm beginning January 6 through Lundi Gras. Delivery will be available through Door Dash
