City Announces
New Orleans
Ranked No. 1
Best Small City to
Live and Work
as a Moviemaker

NEW ORLEANS — The City today announced that MovieMaker Magazine, a film industry trade magazine, has named New Orleans the No. 1 Best Small City to Live and Work as a Moviemaker. The magazine honored New Orleans in their January 2021 issue that ranks big and small cities as the Best Place to Live and Work as a Moviemaker in 2021.

“We are so excited that New Orleans has been named MovieMaker Magazine’s No. 1 Small City to Live and Work as a Filmmaker in 2021,” said Carroll Morton, Director Film New Orleans. “As the most culturally authentic city in America, both independent filmmakers and major film and TV projects are attracted to the city’s creativity, welcoming spirit and a growing film industry infrastructure.”

The magazine is widely distributed during the Sundance Film Festival that began on Jan. 28 and lasts until Feb. 2, and the rankings issue is widely read by the industry. The ranking is supported by the successful return of filming in the city, which is currently only one of two cities that have consistently allowed filming in the U.S. since the summer. New Orleans continues to hold the position of the fourth-largest production hub in the United States. The film industry is to abide by strict COVID-19 prevention guidelines to keep filmmakers and their crews safe.

Equipment rentals and production facilities abound, and New Orleans brought in $475 million in 2020, plus an additional 15% for local labor. New Orleans is home to several great film festivals and naturally a great place to host filming as well as filmmakers and their crews.

The hype about Shaya's king cake is real! This is not for people who complain when their king cake tastes like a cinnamon roll. Because this is basically the most delicious cinnamon roll / sticky bun I've ever eaten. Tender not too sweet dough, with this amazing crunchy crust and salted caramel. This stuff is so good it's going to be hard to share with the neighbors!

DISASTER FOOD STAMPS APPROVED FOR ORLEANS PARISH RESIDENTS IMPACTED BY HURRICANE ZETA

NEW ORLEANS — the Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) received federal approval to begin virtual Disaster Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (DSNAP) operations in Orleans Parish to provide additional food aid to families affected by Hurricane Zeta. Due to ongoing concerns related to the coronavirus pandemic, DSNAP applications will be handled by phone, and benefits cards will be mailed to approved applicants. The City of New Orleans encourages residents to visit the DCFS website to review the process and necessary information required to apply.

On their designated day, residents will call the LAHelpU Customer Service Center to apply and be interviewed. The call center can be reached at 1-888-524-3578 (select language, then press 3-3-1), between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. Applications for DSNAP will be accepted from residents beginning Monday, Feb. 1, 2021, according to the following schedule:
  • Day 1 (Feb. 1): Residents whose last names begin with A-C
  • Day 2 (Feb. 2): D-G

MAYOR CANTRELL ISSUES STATEMENT ON FUNDING
EFFORTS FOR RENTAL ASSISTANCE

NEW ORLEANS — Mayor LaToya Cantrell has issued the following statement on efforts this week to provide millions of dollars in rental assistance for New Orleans residents:

"Thursday represented decisive action that could provide as much as $25 million in rental assistance for our residents when they need it the most. We appreciate Gov. Edwards' announcement that the City will receive $14 million in funds to administer from the U.S. Treasury's Emergency Rental Assistance program as part of the State's allotment of $308 million. We were also encouraged to see the ordinance approving $11.6 million from the same program working its way through the approval process and will continue to fight to keep our people in their homes with all of our available resources."

DEFINITION:
1. (noun) any creature or thing of monstrous size or power

NATIONAL SERPENT DAY
On February 1st, National Serpent Day gives snakes and serpents alike their slithering due. Across religions and cultures, the serpent has been used as a symbol of evil, medicine, fertility, and much more.
Over 3,000 species of snakes populate the Earth. The world’s smallest snake is the Barbados thread snake. This serpent is smaller than a nightcrawler at about 4 inches. In comparison, the longest snake is the reticulated python and the heaviest is the green anaconda. What was the first snake you ever saw?
SNAKE FACTS
  • Only 1/8 of the known species are venomous.
  • While many snakes may be small, their upper and lower jaws separate. This ability allows snakes to consume prey up to three times larger than the diameter of their head.
  • Snakes eat their prey whole.
  • Most snakes are nocturnal.
  • As creepy as their flicking tongue seems, they use it to smell the air.
  • Snakes are cold-blooded, or ectotherms, and must sun themselves to regulate their body temperatures.
  • While most snakes lay eggs, some give live birth.
  • From anti-tumor treatments to antibacterial properties, snake venom has been studied for medical purposes for many years.
NATIONAL BAKED ALASKA DAY
Ice cream and cake come together on February 1st in a celebration called National Baked Alaska Day.
An elaborate dessert that is also known as “Omelette Norvegienne,” Baked Alaska is made with hard ice cream on a base of sponge cake and covered in a shell of toasted meringue.
Click play and listen to the 2-minute episode on why we celebrate National Baked Alaska Day. Featuring the founder of National Day Calendar, Marlo Anderson.

In the United States in 1867, an earnest debate erupted over the potential purchase of Alaska from Russia. Secretary of State William Seward agreed to a purchase price of $7 million, and Alaska became a United States territory in 1868. Those of the opinion that the purchase was a giant mistake referred to the purchase as “Seward’s Folly.”
Enter Charles Ranhofer, the chef at Delmonico’s Restaurant in New York City. He was notorious for naming new and renaming old dishes after famous people and events. Capitalizing on the heated controversy surrounding the purchase in the frozen north, Baked Alaska fit the bill. It was cold, nearly frozen, and quickly toasted in a hot oven before serving.
He served as the chef at Delmonico’s from 1862 to 1896. During his tenure, he also created Lobster Newburg, another famous dish honored with a national food holiday.

Facebook

1st - In order to facilitate better info sharing, posting in the discussion will be closed to everyone except Captains and other approved volunteers. You'll still be able to comment and ask questions but we want to make sure vital information doesn't get lost.

2nd - I have created a public page @kreweofhousefloats (https://www.facebook.com/kreweofhousefloats/) and an event for Mardi Gras 2021 where folks can chat. If you just want basic information, it will be easiest to find it there as announcements are made. This will be a great place to direct your friends who are curious but not necessarily planning to participate in decorating.

3rd - Moderators and I will be cleaning up the discussion page to make sure everyone can find their subkrewes, vendor info, planning updates, and more info about how you can volunteer and participate as much or as little as you feel like. I ask that you take planning discussions to the subkrewe pages and leave this page clean for krewe-wide info. YOU HAVE 24 HOURS so if there is info you want to save do so ASAP. This group is growing very quickly and we are literally building the ship as she sails so we will adjust as necessary facilitate easy access to the latest and greatest.
WWOZ will still be celebrating, as always, on our airwaves, though. Hear those classic Mardi Gras songs and sounds from Twelfth Night through Mardi Gras Day (Feb. 16, 2021) at 90.7 FM or wwoz.org. 💜💚💛"

Families can safely participate in a parade-type event, by viewing stationery floats from their cars, while also supporting City Park. We hope participants will wear Mardi Gras costumes and decorate their cars. Additional elements of this experience are still developing.
Krewes already involved in supporting City Park: Rex, Zulu, Bacchus, Hermes, Thoth, King Arthur, Argus, Alla, Morpheus, Iris, Pygmalion, Mid City, Tucks, Femme Fatale, Babylon, Druids, Carrollton. Kern Studios, Rizzuto and Company, Ducote Designs, and PFJ Floats will assist with transportation of parade units. More are joining the 'Floats in the Oaks' krewe daily!

Out of an abundance of caution and in consideration of the safety of visitors and staff, NOMA is temporarily revising our hours of operation.

through March 3, 2021, the museum will now be closed Monday through Wednesday.

NOMA will be open to visitors Thursday through Sunday, 10 AM – 6 PM. The Besthoff Sculpture Garden will remain open from Wednesday through Sunday from 9:30 AM through sundown (5 PM). During this interim period, Louisiana residents will receive free museum admission on Thursdays, courtesy of The Helis Foundation.
We are paying close attention to COVID-19 infection rates across our city and state. As per the medical and scientific experts, we are anticipating a spike in January and February following the holidays. NOMA will use this additional day of closure for sanitization protocols, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for visitors and staff.
To ensure social distancing is in place, prepaid, contactless ticketing is encouraged for museum visits.

The Madisonville Market, put on by the Northshore Maker’s Market Foundation, is more than just a farmer’s market. It’s a place where the community can interact with local artisans, crafters, farmers, chefs and more as they share their passion for making handmade goods, homegrown produce and prepared foods.
The weekly market takes place each Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the Madisonville Park & Playground, located on Pine Street near the 1000 block (closest cross street is Jahncke Ave.). Over 40 vendors offer hot and ready-to-eat foods, chocolates and candies, cookies and baked goods, jams and jellies, sauces and seasonings, flowers, plants, eggs, cheeses, fruits, veggies, local honey and selections by local vintners. Also, you'll find original art, handmade jewelry and accessories, hand-dyed fabrics, hand-sewn leather goods, wooden creations, soaps and body care products, health and wellness items, home decor items, baby clothes and hand sewn masks.
Shopping aside, families will enjoy the nearby playground, and be sure to look for on-site artists and massage therapists when you're ready to take a break from your shopping. There's also a concession stand on the ballfield with bottled water and sodas.

The non-profit Northshore Maker’s Market Foundation partners with local government, businesses, and other non-profit organizations to fund local projects such as the restoration of historic sites in Madisonville, and the education of young adults ages 14-24 in the arts, trades, agriculture, and entrepreneurship through donations, fundraisers, and mentorship efforts, all with an approach of attaining sustainable solutions for healthier living.
The Northshore Maker’s Market Foundation is sponsored by Resource Bank and local small businesses such as Flamjeaux Coffee Co., a small roasting house in Mandeville.

Our canine krewe members are encouraged to celebrate the best dog parade on Earth by planning to do Barkus virtually this year on Sunday, February 7, 2021, at 2 p.m. CST from your home, porch, yard or wherever you can join the fun with COVID safety measures in place.

It is time for us to give credit to all the dogs who have become our confident co-workers without regard to training or education in countless professions; popular Zoom stars whether they have been formally hired or vetted by the team; in-demand clean-up sous chefs while cooking more at home; our best classmates who don’t even read; and an endless source of unconditional love and acceptance no matter what this pandemic has thrown our way.

The dogs of the world have shown their courage in helping us while we struggle to keep COVID troubles at the our doorsteps. Whether you have the character of the ingenious Kevin, a shifty, grumpy Uncle Frank, a tough Gangsta Johnny, or a worried mother Kate in your pack, let us pay tribute to the time we have been home, but not alone.

YARDI GRAS
CARNIVAL EXPERIENCE

The Yard on Frenchmen presents:
YARDI GRAS 2021, the ultimate CARNIVAL EXPERIENCE!

This year Carnival may look a little different. That is why we pioneered a wild 5 day affair, introducing traditional and re-imagined parade route culture to our guests at The Yard.

Beginning with an immersive restaurant atmosphere, the Courtyard and interior dining room will seamlessly transition into an explosion of Yardi Gras throws and wild booty-popping presentations, including an array of characters that aren't your usual suspects. Guests let loose and party the weekend away.

This signature event features a daily CRAWFISH BOIL, indulgent food menu, Yardi Gras drink specials, a variety of special guests and "parade route" inspired surprises, with music to keep the party going from open to close.

DJ Vladimir will be on the decks each day keeping the Yardi Gras vibe alive with Partygoers dancing in their seats and out in the street.
Each night the ACE Brass band, featuring a full (St. Augustine inspired) drum line will be playing in the courtyard. You may not see a single parade this year, but you won't miss the experience if you go to the Yardi Gras!
