WHAT IS LUNDI GRAS?
The Monday immediately before Mardi Gras Day – also called Lundi Gras, “Fat Monday,” or “Shrove Monday” – holds its own ever-evolving traditions and celebrations. Prior to 1987, Monday was typically a day of rest, a welcomed break between the weekend and Mardi Gras Day. Now, Lundi Gras is another fun day of pre-partying for Fat Tuesday (as if the preceding weekend won’t be enough).

WHAT IS THERE TO DO IN NEW ORLEANS ON LUNDI GRAS?
Mark your calendars for February 28, 2022, so you don’t miss out on these truly one-of-a-kind Lundi Gras traditions and events:

Fat Monday Luncheon – The oldest tradition in Louisiana LGBTQ history, the Fat Monday Luncheon began in 1949 when a local crowned one of his out-of-town guests Queen of the luncheon at Brennan’s restaurant. Eventually, the group moved to Arnaud’s restaurant where the event is held today. Every year two queens are crowned: one from out of town and one from New Orleans, and a few humorous “distinction” titles are given to other attendees.

Red Beans Parade – The Parade of Red Beans meanders through the streets to honor a New Orleans’ Monday culinary tradition: red beans & rice. Paraders construct their outfits out of – you guessed it – red beans. The walking parade typically begins at 2 p.m. in the Marigny (725 St. Ferdinand St.) and meets up with the “Dead Beans” in the Tremé neighborhood. Both end at the Backstreet Cultural Museum.

KREWE OF RED BEANS
Dead Beans Parade – A close cousin of the Red Beans Parade, the Parade of Dead Beans begins around 2 p.m. near Bayou St. John in Mid-City (1440 Moss St.) and eventually meets the Red Beans in the Tremé. Costumes are inspired by mythological and folkloric traditions honoring the afterlife, death, mortality, and even loved ones that have passed away.

Feijao Parade – Also from the Krewe of Red Beans is a new parade, Feijao, meaning “big bean.” This parade will celebrate the uniqueness and similarities between the bean-eating, carnival-loving cultures of Louisiana and Brazil. The marchers will set off at 1 p.m. from the Bywater accompanied by a mix of Brazilian Forro, samba, and Cajun music.

Zulu Lundi Gras Festival – This free event is held at Woldenberg Park on the Mississippi waterfront and is hosted by the Zulu Social Aid & Pleasure Club. It gives locals and tourists a chance to experience Zulu in an up-close and personal way with food, music, and crafts along the Riverfront. Entertainment will be provided, and the event is from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.

Riverwalk’s 34th Annual Lundi Gras – Just down the road at Spanish Plaza is Riverwalk’s 34th Annual Lundi Gras celebration. It features live music and concludes with the arrival of Rex (the King of Carnival) and the King of Zulu, followed by an elaborate fireworks display. This event is free and open to the public from noon to 6:30 p.m.

Evening Parades – Proteus, the second-oldest krewe in the city, and Orpheus, the music-based super-krewe, both roll in Uptown New Orleans on Mardi Gras night.
NATIONAL PUBLIC SLEEPING DAY
If you’re tired on February 28th, it might be because National Public Sleeping Day encourages a mid-day nap right where you are. It is a day for anyone and everyone to take a nap on a blanket at the beach, at the park, in the movie theater, on a bus, train, or subway or any other public place that may work for you. However, it may not be a good idea to take that nap at your desk during work!
Types of Naps
There are different types of naps. The Power Nap is approximately 10 to 20 minutes long and can give a boost of energy to get us through the rest of the day. It also doesn’t leave us drowsy like some longer naps might and will also allow us to fall asleep at a decent time at night.

The Hangover is about 30 minutes long, 10 too many, leaving us loopy and wanting just to stay asleep. We will snap out of it and feel much like we had a Power Nap, but it may take a bit of effort before we feel those benefits.

The Brainiac lasts about 60 minutes and includes the deepest sleep. While we may feel a little grogginess upon waking, much like the Hangover, our ability to recall facts, names, and faces, will be improved. This type of nap may be the best nap after a round of studying or before a big test.
The California King lasts about 90 minutes and is typically a full cycle of sleep. It will also include REM or a dream stage. This nap avoids the hangover like the power nap does and improves creative thinking and motor memory, but nighttime sleep may become elusive.
Good husbands have been keen on these benefits long since the invention of the shopping mall. They are not strangers to public sleeping or the power nap. It may be something the modern non-napping woman should consider.
Some employers have begun to recognize the value of a nap. Studies have shown certain types of naps fuel the brain and recharge our batteries. Naps can improve productivity, decrease health risks and improve morale.

Employers such as Google, HuffPost/AOL, and Nike offer sleep pods or sleep rooms to their employees to reap these benefits.
All Hail the 2022 King and Queen of Carnival
Rex 2022 royalty
When Rex rolls down St. Charles Avenue Fat Tuesday, it will be led by James Reiss III, a high ranking member of the Rex Organization as well as the Executive Vice President of First Horizon Advisors.

"My first message will be just thank you for coming, and celebrating," said Reiss. "There’s never been a time that I can think of in recent history that there’s been more of a demand or an appetite for a celebration, and really need, I think people need it, not just financially or economically, but I think people need it spiritually. They need it for their soul, and I’m really happy that the demand is there and that the parades are going to be packed and the streets will be packed."
This year's Queen, Elinor Pitot White, is also a Country Day graduate and currently attending the University of Texas studying public relations.

White's family history in Rex is extensive and she designed this year's dress with her namesake in mind, who was also queen in 1920.
"My great-great aunt Eleanor Bright Richardson was queen. Since then we’ve had aunts, uncles, and my siblings have all been involved in the organization and presented. It’s really special to me and my family to be a part of it this year," White said.
White is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Bright White. Her mother is the former Virginia Gore Burke of New Orleans.

LSU Holds Towson to One Hit in 11-1 Victory
Three LSU pitchers combined to limit Towson to one hit on Sunday, as the second-ranked Tigers posted an 11-1 win
in Alex Box Stadium,
Skip Bertman Field.
LSU Baseball Defeats Southern in Game 2 of Doubleheader, 15-0
Rightfielder Jacob Berry and centerfielder Dylan Crews combined to drive in five runs Sunday night, leading second-ranked LSU to a 15-0 win over Southern in a seven-inning contest in Alex Box Stadium,
Skip Bertman Field.

LSU, which also defeated Towson, 11-1, earlier in the day, improved to 7-1 with its fourth straight win. Southern dropped to 2-6 with Sunday’s loss.
The Tigers return to action at 6:30 p.m. CT Wednesday, when they play host to New Orleans in Alex Box Stadium, Skip Bertman Field. The game will be broadcast on the LSU Sports Radio Network, and it may be viewed on SEC Network +.

LSU gets it done in Knoxville
LSU (25-4, 13-3 SEC) clinched the No. 2 seed in the SEC Tournament with a 57-54 win in Thompson-Boling Arena on Sunday over Tennessee (22-7, 11-5 SEC) after staving off a late Lady Vols comeback attempt.
LSU was picked to finish No. 8 in the SEC during the preseason, but the Tigers finished in second place, only behind the unanimous No. 1 team in the country in South Carolina. In Coach Mulkey’s first season at LSU, the Tigers finished inside the top-two in the conference for the first time since 2008.
LSU is slated to play on Friday, March 4th at 6 p.m. CT in the Bridgestone Arena against an opponent to be determined. The game will be televised on SEC Network.
Parade characters, including Mr. Big Stuff, the Parade Duke, Province Prince, Mayor, Ambassador, Witch Doctor and Big Shot will arrive at all three stages at staggered times throughout the day beginning at 11 a.m. and proceeding until 4:45 p.m. For a schedule of appearances, visit here.
The 26th annual Zulu Lundi Gras Festival will take place February 28 in Woldenberg Park. This free event is hosted by the 800 members of the Zulu Social Aid and Pleasure Club and is a fun and exciting day full of food, music, arts and crafts. There will be three stages featuring local, world-renowned and Grammy award winning entertainers. VIP tickets, which include all day reserved seating in front of the King Zulu Stage, along with food, drinks, and air-conditioned bathrooms, are available.

 King Of Carnival
Grab your krewe and join The Outlet Collection at Riverwalk as they celebrate the return of Mardi Gras with the 35th annual Lundi Gras on the Mississippi. The free, public event will feature an array of festivities at the refurbished Spanish Plaza on Monday, February 28, including the arrival of Rex, King of Carnival.
This year marks the 150th anniversary of the Rex Organization, and with live music, fireworks, and local food vendors, the event continues to be the premier Lundi Gras celebration in New Orleans.
“After a year without Mardi Gras, we are beyond excited to welcome Rex, King of Carnival and King Zulu, along with Mayor Cantrell, to officially announce Fat Tuesday,” says Frank Quinn, general manager of The Outlet Collection at Riverwalk. “We welcome locals and visitors of all ages to join us on Spanish Plaza for this momentous occasion and celebrate what is uniquely New Orleans.”
Patrons who attend Lundi Gras on the Mississippi will find local food vendors and a lineup of some of New Orleans’ most beloved local musicians scheduled throughout the day.

MUSIC SCHEDULE
12:10 p.m. | Sunpie and the Louisiana Sunspots
2:10 p.m. | Young Pinstripe Brass Band
4:15 p.m. | Cowboy Mouth
6:00 p.m. | Arrival of Rex: King of Carnival
6:20 p.m. | Fireworks display
Historically, Rex and his entourage have arrived in full regalia at the New Orleans riverfront to commence the celebration of Mardi Gras and proclaim his rule over the merriment of the holiday. The annual tradition evolved to establish its own official name, “Lundi Gras,” or “Fat Monday,” in 1987. After several years of arriving by train, the King of Carnival revived the historical tradition of arriving by boat. Upon arrival, Rex will greet visitors who gather at Riverwalk’s Spanish Plaza to watch Mayor LaToya Cantrell, the King of Zulu and other local dignitaries celebrate the ceremonial start to Mardi Gras. Mayor Cantrell will hand over the key to the city to Rex and salute the two monarchs as they give their proclamations for this year’s festivities, followed by an extravagant firework display.
The Outlet Collection at Riverwalk, located at 500 Port of New Orleans Place, will be open from 10 a.m. – 7 p.m. on Lundi Gras

NATIONAL CHOCOLATE SOUFFLÉ DAY
National Chocolate Soufflé Day celebrates a delightfully delicious dessert on February 28th each year.
The word soufflé is the past participle of the French verb souffler, which means “to blow up” or more loosely “puff up” which describes a souffle perfectly. A soufflé is a lightly baked cake made with egg yolks and beaten egg whites that are combined with other ingredients to make the dish either a savory main dish or a sweet dessert.

Two essential components make up every soufflé.

1. a French creme patisserie base/flavored cream sauce or puree
2. egg whites beaten to a soft peak meringue
A soufflé gets its flavor from the base, and the egg whites provide the lift to puff it up. A variety of cheeses, jams, fruits, or chocolates can be baked into the base of the soufflé. Many souffle bakers like to puncture the top of the soufflé after removing it from the oven. Then they pour mouth-watering sauces onto it, such as chocolate, vanilla, or for a savory flavor cheese and herbs.

NATIONAL FLORAL DESIGN DAY
National Floral Design Day on February 28th recognizes the art and history of floral design. For thousands of years, floral design has been an important cultural art form. This is the day we celebrate that art form. It may be in a bouquet, painting, in textiles, a garden or a floral arrangement.
Floral design is a multi-billion dollar industry that brightens our lives on a daily basis.
From majestic, historic gardens to a bridal bouquet on that special day, floral designers have an eye for color, style, and perspective. Floral design can complete a space, complementing existing structures and bringing brightness and color to them.

As with many arts, floral design has traditional roots hearkening back to Egyptian temple offerings to gods. The design changed from era to era, each having distinct customs and traditions.

Like Judice's Bakrey, McKenzie's Pastry Shoppes didn't push king cakes during Carnival, 1968. Their ad for Lundi Gras, 26-Feb-1968, features donuts, rolls and buns for your dogs, burgers, and sammiches, and layer cakes. 37 locations, open all day on Mardi Gras!
Those of you who don't remember, McKenzie's was a chain of "Pastry Shoppes." They operated a central bakery plant in the Ninth Ward, then trucked the goodies to the stores across the metro area.

Making Mardi Gras
Sponsored by Blaine Kern’s Mardi Gras World and Kern Studios
thru–May 8, 2022
Tuesday–Saturday, 9:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m.; Sunday, 10:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m.
520 Royal Street, Tricentennial Wing, 3rd Floor
Free ticketed admission
About the Exhibition
You can feel it coming. A marching band cadence echoes from a mile away. Pounding drums and bright feathers flare from the Mardi Gras Indians just up the block. Months of painstaking glittering, marching, beadwork, and brushstrokes have led up to this moment, and you are ready to burst into the street. It’s Mardi Gras in New Orleans.
On January 6, 2022, The Historic New Orleans Collection’s Making Mardi Gras exhibition rambles its way into the museum's French Quarter galleries. This showstopping display invites visitors into the sprawling dens, late-night sewing sessions, and sweaty dance rehearsals where “The Greatest Free Show on Earth” is created and re-created each year among the city’s diverse communities. Explore the vibrant expression that only Carnival season can muster, as we meet up with 19th-century float artists, dawn-breaking skeleton gangs, and homebound house-float creators—stopping to admire costumes, royalty, and hand-painted coconuts.
This is the Mardi Gras that happens before we're watching, the Carnival that will wind through the city on Fat Tuesday, far from the intemperate Bourbon Street scene. Catch it before it passes.
This exhibition is generously sponsored by Blaine Kern’s Mardi Gras World and Kern Studios.
Fit for a King: The Rex Archives at THNOC
January 15–May 8, 2022

Tuesday–Saturday, 9:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m.
Williams Research Center, 410 Chartres Street, 2nd Floor
Admission is free.
About the Exhibition
Since 1872, revelers on Mardi Gras Day have danced to the tune “If Ever I Cease to Love” and waved to the self-proclaimed “King of Carnival” as the Rex parade wound its way through the city of New Orleans. To mark the 150th anniversary of the founding of the Rex, The Historic New Orleans Collection unveils Fit for a King, an exhibition showcasing jewels, favors, doubloons, float designs, and more from THNOC’s Rex-related holdings, which number in the thousands.
Presented in conjunction with the large-scale Making Mardi Gras exhibition at 520 Royal Street, Fit for a King is part of THNOC’s spring exploration of the creativity that Carnival season conjures.

The spirit of House Floats is DIY — amateur artists and professionals alike have been able to find solace and creativity with it after the COVID-19 pandemic wiped out regular gigs and brought sorrow to a city usually known for celebrating.

It began as somewhat of a joke after local resident Megan Boudreaux mused on social media about a way to keep Carnival going in the absence of parades last year.
But the idea swiftly took off and was embraced across the city as New Orleanians got to work to showcase their creativity from porches and balconies and yards.

As Coco Darrow, the lead artist and designer of Stronghold Studios, puts it, “it was a way to show the world we could still make lemonade out of lemons.”
What could have been a temporary tradition is now likely here to stay — even as the city prepares for a slightly-more-normal Carnival season this year and parades are expected to roll.
Stronghold Studios is filled with giant flowers, light-up “luna moths,” a giant sugar skull, cut-outs of local celebrities and other homages to New Orleans culture and beyond. The team of painters, carpenters and other producers will expand over the next several weeks as the studio ramps up production and prepares for a swell of custom orders.

The moment you have all been waiting for is finally here.
The Krewe of House Floats has released its comprehensive list of decorated homes across the New Orleans area.

The movement became a new tradition in New Orleans after parades were cancelled in 2021.

"Rex: The 150th Anniversary of the School of Design"

Feb 2 - Dec 11
All day

Louisiana State Museum exhibition of artifacts, focusing on the costumes of the krewe’s royals, with newly discovered treasures recently acquired from European collections.

The Louisiana State Museum is preparing a major exhibition to open in the Presbytère Museum on February 1, 2022, commemorating the milestone 150th anniversary of the Rex Organization, the foremost New Orleans Mardi Gras krewe. Since its founding in 1872, Rex has taken on an unparalleled leadership role in Carnival, setting the standard of excellence for the dozens of krewes formed since and even inspiring the formation of similar civic organizations in other states. The Rex parade was the first daytime parade in modern Carnival, and the man selected as the monarch of the organization, known also by its incorporated name, the School of Design, serves as the King of all New Orleans Carnival.
The exhibition will tell the story of Rex using the Louisiana State Museum’s unrivaled collection of artifacts, heavily focusing on the sophisticated costumes of the krewe’s kings, queens, and courtiers. The Museum has always prioritized preserving the artifacts of Rex and made a concerted effort beginning in the 1920s to gather costumes directly from krewe members. This collection now totals over 60 royalty and krewe costumes and gowns as well as dozens of sets of rare crown jewels. The exhibition will also feature newly discovered treasures from the krewe’s past, recently acquired from European collections, along with rarely seen artifacts borrowed from private and institutional collections.
The exhibition will also discuss the vital civic function that the krewe has always performed since it was founded in part to boost economic development in the city during the tumultuous years of Reconstruction following the Civil War. After Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans in 2005, Rex assumed a crucial philanthropic mission through its Pro Bono Publico Foundation, to date funneling over $10 million to the New Orleans Public School system through the contributions of the krewe’s members. Numerous kings and queens of the krewe have been honored by municipal and humanitarian organizations for their broad-ranging support of essential community causes.

An exciting feature of the exhibition will be a float built inside the Museum by the krewe’s float builder, Royal Artists, demonstrating the techniques and materials used to construct the elaborate historically-inspired floats for Rex. Rare vintage films of Rex parades of decades ago will bring the spectacle to life, and lively time-lapse video showing the float-building process will shine a spotlight on the creativity and skill that go into crafting these rolling tableaux.

A host of complementary educational programs and lectures are being planned, including hands-on activity days for families as well as sensory-friendly programs for individuals with autism and other developmental disabilities.

LIVE MUSIC FROM THE BRASS-A-HOLICS at the Jazz Playhouse
Since 2010, the Brass-A-Holics have been taking their unique sound around the world. Steeped in the deep musical culture of New Orleans, the band brings a heavy dose of go-go funk to the New Orleans brass sound. In a blending of musical cultures stemming from cities separated by more than a thousand miles, a Brass-a-Holics live show takes the New Orleans brass band culture and infuses it with the electricity of Washington D.C.'s go-go. The resulting sound is both captivating and unique.

Dew Drop Inn Announces Spring Concert Series
 In Mandeville
The historic Dew Drop Jazz & Social Hall in Mandeville, built in 1895, is back this spring with a full season of concerts presenting traditional jazz and blues, funky swamp pop and Cajun music—with a few surprises along the way. For the six Saturday night evening concerts a variety of genres will be showcased by some of the region’s most notable musicians.
March 5 | Dr. Redwine’s Grape Stompers, led by acclaimed clarinetist Ben Redwine, will make their Dew Drop debut with a tribute to famed New Orleans clarinetist Barney Bigard, who toured for years with Louis Armstrong. Redwine and his band will recreate the music of the Dew Drop’s heyday and will be joined by several swing dancers who will kick off the season in a unique and joyful way.
March 19 | Jazz vocalist Ingrid Lucia and her all-star band will present a special evening of vintage jazz and blues, with music from the 1920s and 30s, along with new, original tunes. Lucia’s voice takes listeners back to a bygone era, while her distinct phrasing notes a more classic jazz ambience that is both appealing & enthusiastic.
April 2 | Camile Baudoin & Friends, reliving a few Radiators classics and new music too with celebrated musicians Reggie Scanlan, Frank Bua & John Fohl all together on one stage making this special concert one to remember for a long, long time!
April 16 | Gregg Stafford & His Jazz Hounds, led by renowned Preservation Hall musician and educator Gregg Stafford, will present a night deeply steeped in traditional New Orleans jazz.
May 14 | The unique jazz folk stylings define Sarah Quintana & Friends. A singer-songwriter from New Orleans with a background rich in jazz, folk and popular music, Quintana is a devoted guitarist with a voice that is instantly recognizable. Her versatility has led her from singing on the streets of Provence with a traveling circus to the stages of the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival and even New York’s Lincoln Center with a swing band.
May 21 | Two unique bands will perform one set each, starting with Doucet Frères, featuring the famed brother duo of Michael and David Doucet, of the Grammy-Award winning Cajun band, BeauSoleil. The Doucet family name is known for making Cajun music a popular genre within the world music scene. The second set will showcase Michael Doucet’s new Cajun dance band, Lâcher Prise Trio, with Doucet on fiddle, and both Sarah Quintana and Chad Viator on guitar. The name Lâcher Prise means to “let go” and blends Cajun, swamp soul, and Gypsy tunes that celebrate love and the simple joys of having a good time.
Presented by the Friends of the Dew Drop, these six Saturday evening concerts will run from 6:30 to 9:00p.m. and will feature home-cooked food for purchase provided by the Ladies of First Free Mission Baptist Church, located next door. Soft drinks, water, beer and wine will be available for purchase. Admission for each concert is $10 cash per adult. Students and children may attend free of charge. No outside food, drinks or pets are allowed and lawn chairs may be used outside the hall on the grounds.
The history of the Dew Drop Inn begins in 1885 when a group of civic-minded African American residents of the Mandeville, led by the late Olivia Eunio, created the Dew Drop Social and Benevolent Association. A decade later, in 1895, the organization laid a cornerstone and constructed a small wooden building two and one-half blocks from Lake Pontchartrain on Lamarque Street.
The Association, like many created among African American residents following the Civil War, had chiefly benevolent goals—to care for the sick, provide help with funeral arrangements, food & temporary housing—all during a time when Black residents could not obtain various types of insurance. Today, known as one of the oldest, unaltered rural jazz halls in the U.S. the not-for-profit organization, Friends of the Dew Drop, schedules and manages the hall’s performances and educational activities.

The beloved ogre fairy tale comes to life in this colorful, Tony Award-winning production based on the hit movie.
"Once upon a time, there was a little ogre named Shrek...." And thus begins the tale of an unlikely hero who finds himself on a life-changing journey alongside a wisecracking Donkey and a feisty princess who resists her rescue. Throw in a short-tempered bad guy, a cookie with an attitude and over a dozen other fairy tale misfits, and you've got the kind of mess that calls for a real hero. Luckily, there's one on hand... and his name is Shrek.

the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival returns this spring with headliners The Who, Stevie Nicks, Foo Fighters, Lionel Richie, Erykah Badu, Ludacris, Nelly and Willie Nelson.
Festival organizers announced the lineup for the festival Thursday. It’s scheduled over two weekends, Friday, April 29, through Sunday, May 1 and Thursday, May 5, through Sunday, May 8.

“We will follow whatever COVID protocols are in place at the time,” Davis stressed. “Whatever they want us to do we will do. It helps that we’re outdoors. It’s still four months away, but we think by April and May it will be a beautiful time. Everybody’s ready to come back.”
