NATIONAL CLEAN OUT YOUR COMPUTER DAY
Observed on the second Monday in February, National Clean Out Your Computer Day promotes taking time out of your day to do some basic housekeeping on your computer.
All computers need regular organizing and clean up. This includes the removal of old files and clutter. We tend to save emails, documents, and photos on our hard drive when other media can store it for us. Often, we keep duplicates we don’t need, too. Old programs also create havoc, too. Makes sure you are using the latest versions of programs and operating systems, too.
Over time, files and programs that are unused on your PC clog the memory and cause confusion during retrieval and use of other data. They may also slow down your computer.

NATIONAL KITE FLYING DAY
Observed annually on February 8th, National Kite Flying Day encourages exploring kite flying and making. Enthusiasts across the country mark the day by launching their kites or making plans to attend festivals.
Kites date back to China in 470 B.C. China is full of lore and histories of the origins of the kite. Many are related to the way wind affects the leaves on the trees, the shelters they lived in, blowing away the sails on their ships, and the hats they wore upon their heads. The stories also tell of kites invented to spy on their enemies or to send messages.
Evidence also shows the people of the South Sea Islands were using kites for fishing around the same time as the people of China.
Early kites were constructed from bamboo or sturdy reeds for framing. Leaves, silk, or paper made ideal sails. Vines or braided fibers completed the line or tether. While people initially used kites as tools, they also used them for ceremonial reasons as well. Whether they sent messages into the heavens or to lift offerings up to the gods, kites had a symbolic place in the culture.
Today kites are popular both as hobbies and for outdoor fun. They range from a simple diamond kite to more complicated box kites and giant sled kites. Stunt kites, also known as sport kites, are designed so the operator can maneuver the kite into dips, twists, and dives with dramatic effect.

Confusing terminology, mysterious labeling, a myriad of styles and flavors - sake can be one intimidating beverage! We have a nice little selection at Swirl right now and thought a little education might help you dive in and learn about this fascinating drink. I'm going to touch on some fairly simplistic topics here but if you REALLY want to experience sake with someone who knows and loves it, check out sommelier Michelle Gueydan's upcoming virtual tasting. (see details below)
So in keeping things simple, here are a few concepts to keep in mind:
- The term sake basically means alcoholic drink in Japanese. Simply put: sake is rice and water that has been fermented into an alcoholic beverage. The higher quality the rice and the purer the water, the better the sake is meant to taste. Although sake drinks far more like wine, sake shares a similar brewing process to that of beer.
- Most of the hot sake you see in restaurants is cheap and poorly made. Usually distilled alcohol is add to lower production costs and heating helps cover the off flavors making it more palatable. Under most circumstances, premium sake is served cold or sometimes at room temperature allowing you to experience the subtle flavors and aromatics. Purer sake, with little or no additional alcohol, is considered to be of higher quality and premium sake can be classified into two main categories that indicate this:
純米酒, or junmai, is sake made without added alcohol or sugar
本醸造酒, or honjouzou, is sake that contains less than 10 percent added alcohol
-The grade of sake is determined by how much the rice is polished. The polishing removes undesirable fats so that only the starch center of the grain remains. The more rice that is polished away, the higher the quality. The rice polishing ratio tells you how much of the husk was removed before being used to make the sake. The lower this number is, the more rice was polished away and the higher quality the sake.
吟醸, or ginjou, has a rice polishing ratio of 60 percent or less
大吟醸, or daiginjou, has a rice polishing ratio of 50 percent or less (higher quality)
So as you can see, there are a large number of factors that determine the flavor of your sake making it a really diverse and fascinating beverage to explore. What is really exciting is when you pair it properly, sake can complement food just as well as any wine!

Ready to taste and learn? Join Michelle on Wednesday, February 10th at 7pm CST to taste and learn about a beverage that is technically neither wine, spirit nor beer, and whose production method is the most complex and precise of all. She will touch upon Sake’s history (including its HOT introduction into the US market), as well as discuss quality levels, types/grades, regions, producers, and pairing tips. After one hour, you will recognize/know the meaning of: Koji, Toji, Fustu-shu, Junmai, Honjozo,, Ginjo, Daiginjo, and my favorite: Seimaibuai (say-my-boo-eye). Even more importantly, you will taste 3 high quality, refined and chilled Sakes.
For more information and to participate and purchase your Premium Sake Package (with a 10% discount), check out Michelle's Eventbrite post -

Out of an abundance of caution and in consideration of the safety of visitors and staff, NOMA is temporarily revising our hours of operation.
through March 3, 2021, the museum will now be closed Monday through Wednesday.
NOMA will be open to visitors Thursday through Sunday, 10 AM – 6 PM. The Besthoff Sculpture Garden will remain open from Wednesday through Sunday from 9:30 AM through sundown (5 PM). During this interim period, Louisiana residents will receive free museum admission on Thursdays, courtesy of The Helis Foundation.
We are paying close attention to COVID-19 infection rates across our city and state. As per the medical and scientific experts, we are anticipating a spike in January and February following the holidays. NOMA will use this additional day of closure for sanitization protocols, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for visitors and staff.
To ensure social distancing is in place, prepaid, contactless ticketing is encouraged for museum visits.
Thank you, as always, for your continued support!

Millions of people around the world will ring in the Lunar New Year on Friday, February 12th, coinciding with the first new moon of the lunar calendar. While commonly referred to as “Chinese New Year,” many East Asian and Southeast Asian countries outside Mainland China also celebrate the Lunar New Year, including Korea, Vietnam, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Tibet, Bhutan, Mongolia, and the Philippines.
Each country has its own unique traditions and customs, but common to all celebrations are coming together with family and friends, gift-giving, and preparing and eating traditional foods.
The Year of the Ox
On February 12th, we say goodbye to the Year of the Rat and usher in the Year of the Ox, the second animal of the Chinese Zodiac. The Ox is an esteemed animal in Chinese culture and is said to represent hard work, positivity, and honesty.
|
|
Dragon dances, mooncakes, parades, fireworks, red envelopes... most of us are familiar with many of the traditions associated with Chinese New Year celebrations. Lunar New Year is a very big deal in China. Schools and businesses are closed for a whole week and millions of people travel to their hometowns to spend the holiday with family in what is often referred to as "the world's largest human migration." Red is considered a lucky color in Chinese culture, so you will see it in abundance during Lunar New Year festivities.
Speaking of red, those red envelopes, known as hong bao, contain money that is given by elders to children. While the traditional foods prepared and eaten during Lunar New Year vary somewhat by region, jiaozi (dumplings), nian goa (rice cakes), and mandarin oranges are considered lucky foods.

YARDI GRAS
CARNIVAL EXPERIENCE
|
The Yard on Frenchmen presents:
YARDI GRAS 2021, the ultimate CARNIVAL EXPERIENCE!
This year Carnival may look a little different. That is why we pioneered a wild 5 day affair, introducing traditional and re-imagined parade route culture to our guests at The Yard.
Beginning with an immersive restaurant atmosphere, the Courtyard and interior dining room will seamlessly transition into an explosion of Yardi Gras throws and wild booty-popping presentations, including an array of characters that aren't your usual suspects. Guests let loose and party the weekend away.
This signature event features a daily CRAWFISH BOIL, indulgent food menu, Yardi Gras drink specials, a variety of special guests and "parade route" inspired surprises, with music to keep the party going from open to close.
DJ Vladimir will be on the decks each day keeping the Yardi Gras vibe alive with Partygoers dancing in their seats and out in the street.
Each night the ACE Brass band, featuring a full (St. Augustine inspired) drum line will be playing in the courtyard. You may not see a single parade this year, but you won't miss the experience if you go to the Yardi Gras!

The Madisonville Market, put on by the Northshore Maker’s Market Foundation, is more than just a farmer’s market. It’s a place where the community can interact with local artisans, crafters, farmers, chefs and more as they share their passion for making handmade goods, homegrown produce and prepared foods.
The weekly market takes place each Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the Madisonville Park & Playground, located on Pine Street near the 1000 block (closest cross street is Jahncke Ave.). Over 40 vendors offer hot and ready-to-eat foods, chocolates and candies, cookies and baked goods, jams and jellies, sauces and seasonings, flowers, plants, eggs, cheeses, fruits, veggies, local honey and selections by local vintners. Also, you'll find original art, handmade jewelry and accessories, hand-dyed fabrics, hand-sewn leather goods, wooden creations, soaps and body care products, health and wellness items, home decor items, baby clothes and hand sewn masks.
Shopping aside, families will enjoy the nearby playground, and be sure to look for on-site artists and massage therapists when you're ready to take a break from your shopping. There's also a concession stand on the ballfield with bottled water and sodas.
The non-profit Northshore Maker’s Market Foundation partners with local government, businesses, and other non-profit organizations to fund local projects such as the restoration of historic sites in Madisonville, and the education of young adults ages 14-24 in the arts, trades, agriculture, and entrepreneurship through donations, fundraisers, and mentorship efforts, all with an approach of attaining sustainable solutions for healthier living.
The Northshore Maker’s Market Foundation is sponsored by Resource Bank and local small businesses such as Flamjeaux Coffee Co., a small roasting house in Mandeville.
