Drop Off Your Christmas Lights at Audubon Zoo - Save the Lions!
Lights for Lions
DROP OFF YOUR DISCARDED STRANDS OF HOLIDAY LIGHTS AT THE ZOO!
Most holiday lights are not bio-degradable and are dangerous to animals if they get tangled in the strands. You can take action and make a positive impact on the natural world by recycling your lights and keeping them from going to a landfill.
Audubon Zoo will collect holiday string lights for recycling this holiday season. All proceeds from Audubon’s Lights for Lions recycling program will support the Wildlife Conservation Network’s Lion Recovery Fund. Lion populations have declined by half in just a quarter century. Their loss signals the loss of the wild in Africa.

NATIONAL CLEAN OFF YOUR DESK DAY
The second Monday of January each year recognizes National Clean Off Your Desk Day.
This day is an opportunity to begin your new year with a clean and organized workspace. Whether your desk is in a private or shared office, cubicle, home or a make-shift desk on the counter, having your workspace uncluttered and organized will help you work more efficiently. A clean workspace improves productivity and inspires us, too. It often gives us a sense of serenity.

NATIONAL MILK DAY
National Milk Day on January 11th commemorates the day many think the first milk deliveries in glass bottles began in the United States. Alexander Campbell of the New York Dairy Company professed to the New York State Senate that his company was the first to make these deliveries in 1878.
The United States and Australia export more milk and milk products than any other country. Those products include cheese, yogurt, ice cream, butter, cream, powdered milk, and much more. Throughout the world, more than 6 billion people consume milk and the products we make from it. One of the reasons is because milk provides nutrients such as calcium, potassium, vitamin B12, and vitamin A.

Among the more unique businesses to find in the old New Orleans City Directory was for the firm of Hussmann & Company at No. 21 Exchange Place who employed something called the Eagle Odorless Apparatus. Established in 1877, the company received the approval of the Board of Health of the city of New Orleans for the complete emptying of cemetery vaults.
In a city where death is a serious business, there was great need for firms such as this. Placing the deceased into a wall vault, such as that pictured by Georges Mugnier at the old Girod Street Cemetery in the 1890s, may have been a temporary situation. Perhaps the deceased was to be exhumed and returned to their hometown once arrangements could be made. Perhaps the family tomb was full and only the passage of time would free up more space until the deceased could be reinterred in the family plot. For whatever reason, the remains needed to be handled with dignity and care.
The above-ground tombs of New Orleans served as a de-facto crematory, with the sweltering heat bearing down on the tomb to reduce the deceased to bone within a year, after which the bones could be placed into an ossuary or bone box that would be placed in the rear of the tomb, thereby creating a vacancy for another family member. Given the mortality rates of 19thcentury New Orleans, there is a good chance that the need for the Eagle Odorless Apparatus was great.

His cultural contributions span his business and philanthropic career. He helped reorganize and open the Maison Blanche chain of department stores that gave the world Mr. Bingle. In the 1890s, he acquired several railway lines, known locally as streetcars, and replaced their mules with electrical power lines, a technology that remains in use. He financed similar projects in Birmingham and Nashville in the interest of spurring the southern economy.

Doctors give insulin for the first time to treat a diabetes patient. Fourteen-year-old Leonard Thompson receives the life-saving injection developed by Dr. Frederick Banting and Dr. Charles Best. He had an initial allergic reaction likely caused by an impurity in the insulin. After delaying further injections, 12 days later a more pure form of insulin was given by Dr. James Collip, ultimately saving his life.

Hire A Mardi Gras Artist
“Mardi Gras float artists have spent years tirelessly working behind the scenes to bring Carnival to the streets. Now it’s time to return the favor and help keep these workers employed during a very different type of Mardi Gras. And hopefully bring some joy and magic to the public while we’re at it.”
~ CAROLINE THOMAS (FOUNDER OF THE EFFORT).

1st - In order to facilitate better info sharing, posting in the discussion will be closed to everyone except Captains and other approved volunteers. You'll still be able to comment and ask questions but we want to make sure vital information doesn't get lost.

2nd - I have created a public page @kreweofhousefloats (https://www.facebook.com/kreweofhousefloats/) and an event for Mardi Gras 2021 where folks can chat. If you just want basic information, it will be easiest to find it there as announcements are made. This will be a great place to direct your friends who are curious but not necessarily planning to participate in decorating.

3rd - Moderators and I will be cleaning up the discussion page to make sure everyone can find their subkrewes, vendor info, planning updates, and more info about how you can volunteer and participate as much or as little as you feel like. I ask that you take planning discussions to the subkrewe pages and leave this page clean for krewe-wide info. YOU HAVE 24 HOURS so if there is info you want to save do so ASAP. This group is growing very quickly and we are literally building the ship as she sails so we will adjust as necessary facilitate easy access to the latest and greatest.

schedule for curbside Christmas tree recycling
this year
The city said last week that the program has restored an area equal to almost 200 football fields. The trees also create important habitat for birds, fish, crabs, crawfish, and shrimp.
In Jefferson Parish, the trees have been used since 1991 to build wave-dampening fences to protect 2,000 feet of crucial shoreline in Goose Bayou in Laffitte, preserving the habitat of ducks, alligators, shrimp, fish and crabs.
The details of the programs vary from parish to parish, but tree stands, lights, tinsel and ornaments must be completely removed from the trees. Flocked or artificial trees cannot be used.

Below are the parish-by-parish details on how to recycle your trees.

St. Tammany
Trees can be brought to the St. Tammany Parish Fairgrounds at 1515 N. Florida St. in Covington and The Old Levee Board Property at 61134 Military Road in Slidell, during daylight hours. Trees will be accepted until Jan. 29.

Plaquemines Parish
Trees will be picked up through Jan. 22 and can also be dropped off at compactor locations in Port Sulphur and Belle Chasse.
St. Charles Parish
Trees can be dropped off at the East and West Bank Bridge Parks starting Dec. 26 and will be picked up curbside Jan. 9-10.

The weekly market takes place each Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the Madisonville Park & Playground, located on Pine Street near the 1000 block (closest cross street is Jahncke Ave.). Over 40 vendors offer hot and ready-to-eat foods, chocolates and candies, cookies and baked goods, jams and jellies, sauces and seasonings, flowers, plants, eggs, cheeses, fruits, veggies, local honey and selections by local vintners. Also, you'll find original art, handmade jewelry and accessories, hand-dyed fabrics, hand-sewn leather goods, wooden creations, soaps and body care products, health and wellness items, home decor items, baby clothes and hand sewn masks.
Shopping aside, families will enjoy the nearby playground, and be sure to look for on-site artists and massage therapists when you're ready to take a break from your shopping. There's also a concession stand on the ballfield with bottled water and sodas.

The non-profit Northshore Maker’s Market Foundation partners with local government, businesses, and other non-profit organizations to fund local projects such as the restoration of historic sites in Madisonville, and the education of young adults ages 14-24 in the arts, trades, agriculture, and entrepreneurship through donations, fundraisers, and mentorship efforts, all with an approach of attaining sustainable solutions for healthier living.
The Northshore Maker’s Market Foundation is sponsored by Resource Bank and local small businesses such as Flamjeaux Coffee Co., a small roasting house in Mandeville.

The Intergalactic Krewe Of Chewbacchus Embarks On 11th Annual Adventure
The Intergalactic Krewe of Chewbacchus will embark on its eleventh annual adventure, this time navigating the impossible terrain of socially distanced parading during a global pandemic. Life finds a way. On that day, The Sacred Drunken Wookiee will awaken from his season of slumber to present the theme DON’T PANIC! THE HITCHHIKER’S GUIDE TO THE NEW REALITY – VOLUME ONE.
Within the week leading up to VOLUME ONE, the krewe will release “The Guide” in the form of an online PDF brochure, which will include a map to the locations of where the devoted subkrewes of Chewbacchus will be stationed at homes and businesses around the city of New Orleans on January 23, 2021. Each station will represent a “chapter” of the guide. Fans and devotees of The Sacred Drunken Wookiee will be able to visit these stations on that date and collect the wonderful handmade throws of our subkrewes and marvel at the beautiful costumes and glorious contraptions of our members in a socially distanced manner. ALL CHEWBACCHUS MEMBERS WILL BE APPROPRIATELY MASKED, AND ADHERING TO CURRENT SOCIAL DISTANCE AND OUTDOOR GATHERING GUIDELINES. In return, it is expected that fans and spectators will return that respect and be masked and socially distanced as well. To emphasize a mindfulness to the safety and health of our members, The Overlords of Chewbacchus hereby issue the decree that no member of the public visiting a station of our subkrewes will be entertained with the gift of a throw if not masked and respecting current social distance guidelines.
Furthermore, in addition to the opportunity to still witness the splendor of our subkrewes and chance to acquire their beautiful handmade throws, DON’T PANIC! THE HITCHHIKER’S GUIDE TO THE NEW REALITY – VOLUME ONE will include a multimedia side quest for rare, one of a kind, artifacts of The Sacred Drunken Wookiee. Those artifacts will be found at randomly selected subkrewe stations and will reveal clues to the location of a prized collection of rare treasures, a Chewbacchus merchandise prize package, a lifetime membership to the Intergalactic Krewe of Chewbacchus, and the Royal title “Ultimate Survivor of the New Reality.”
Tickets are now available online to purchase, but get them fast seating is limited.
