On MLK Day, as our nation honors the work and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., there are lessons we can learn from the civil rights leader and apply to our lives in the present.

Dr. King once said that “life’s most persistent and urgent question is ‘what are you doing for others?’” Here’s how you can gain from his wisdom in 2021 and put his words into action this MLK day.

Volunteer your time and talents
“Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly. I can never be what I ought to be until you are what you ought to be. This is the interrelated structure of reality.”

Spread joy
“Those who are not looking for happiness are the most likely to find it, because those who are searching forget that the surest way to be happy is to seek happiness for others.”

Contact your representatives
“Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.”

Expand your mind
“The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character – that is the goal of true education.”

Be kind to yourself
“Be a bush if you can't be a tree. If you can't be a highway, just be a trail. If you can't be a sun, be a star. For it isn't by size that you win or fail. Be the best of whatever you are.”

Have hope for tomorrow
“Out of the mountain of despair, a stone of hope.”

Drew Brees plans to 'think about a lot of things' before making decision on retirement

THE MOST INTERESTING LEAGUE IN THE WORLD
How the NFL Explains America

UNIQUE NFL FOOTBALL BOOK BY NEW ORLEANS AUTHOR: Perfect gift for Football fans who have everything. They don't have this! It's even a fascinating book for non football fans that explores American culture in a fun way.

The new book by New Orleans author and comedian Chris Champagne is an outrageous take on America's favorite game, linking pro football with unlikely cultural touchstones through stories, tales and historical oddities about Bob Dylan, Princess Di, Al Capone, Vladimir Putin, Johnny Carson, Barack Obama, Donald Trump, Harry Truman, JFK, LBJ, Sinatra, Larry King, James Brown, and many others, even including obtuse links to the Lindbergh kidnapping, the first World Trade Center bombing, the murder of JFK and the genesis of the Kardashians. Also, the world wide reach of the NFL is found in stories about China, England, Nigeria, Hungary and Kurdistan.

Chris Champagne, author of THE MOST INTERESTING LEAGUE IN THE WORLD, is an author, poet, radio talk show host , columnist, political satirist and comedian. He is the author of Secret New Orleans (Jonglez Editions) a unique travel book about New Orleans, and THE YAT Dictionary(Lavender Ink), a compilation of the unique accent of the Crescent City. He was voted the best comedian in New Orleans in 2013 and 2014, and he brings this comic sensibility along with his background as a life long New Orleans Saints fan and the son of a former NFL player to this compendium of curiosities linked to America's national pastime.

What others say about THE MOST INTERESTING LEAGUE IN THE WORLD

"There's no one better equipped to relive and document the absurd history of the NFL than Chris Champagne, a professional comedian, longtime Saints fan and a son of a former NFL lineman. His unique perspective and rapier wit will delight readers and sports fans of all ages"
JEFF DUNCAN, Columnist ,The ATHLETIC NEW ORLEANS

"Engaging for even the most ardent Anti-Footballer with its utterly fascinating and unexpected tales of behind-the scene-intrigue and shenanigans that have nothing to do with the sport itself, like the "Six Degrees Of Kevin Bacon" only better, because-FOOTBALL"
JILL CONNER BROWN, Bestselling Author of THE SWEET POTATO QUEENS series

>The book is available on Amazon, and in bookstores through IngramSpark catalog, and by contacting the author.

ONE MONTH TILL FAT TUESDAY

The news this week that the Memorial Day Weekend Mardi Gras in Metairie was not going to happen was not surprising, but it was surprising that the announcement that later dates for parades to roll were still under consideration. Summer has high temps and the possibility of hurricanes. Fall competes with football and the already rescheduled French Quarter and Jazz Festivals. Captains I have talked to did not look favorably on the prospects of parading twice in a six-month period, assuming the 2022 calendar goes off as planned.

The other three biggest stories working?
1. The explosion in the number of houses participating in the House Floats Project (KreweOfHouseFloats.org)
2. The panned three-night, nine-hour virtual streaming event sponsored by Mardi Gras World and nola.com that features “music, parades, entertainment and more.” (nola.com) February 12,13,14—8 PM
3. The possibility of “Floats in the Oaks”—a City Park driving tour featuring a display of signature floats from several krewes

Also look for WYES to offer special Mardi Gras programming this year.

And don’t forget to grab a copy of the 2021 Mardi Gras Guide. The parades have been cancelled but there’s a lot of fun inside our 45thn annual magazine.
Arthur Hardy's Mardi Gras Guide contains 132 colorful pages of facts, photos, features, and fun, including more than 60 individual krewe profiles. The award-winning magazine includes a history of the event; answers to the 25 most frequently asked questions; an illustrated glossary of Mardi Gras terms; and articles on New Orleans personalities, traditions and happenings. For more than four decades, the city's top writers and photographers have worked together to create a publication that has achieved genuine collectible status. With more than three million copies sold, Arthur Hardy's Mardi Gras Guide is recognized as the program to the event.
Mardi Gras is February 16, 2021!

NATIONAL WINNIE THE POOH DAY
National Winnie the Pooh Day on January 18th commemorates author A.A. Milne’s birthday in 1882. He brought the adorable, honey-loving bear to life in his stories, which also featured his son, Christopher Robin.
Milne’s lovable Pooh Bear, as he was fondly called, is a fictional bear inspired by a black bear named Winnie. Winnie lived at the London Zoo during World War I. The author’s son, Christopher Robin, would visit the bear often and named his own teddy bear after her and a swan named Pooh.
This friendship inspired a collection of books starting with Winnie-the-Pooh in 1926. E.H. Shepard beautifully illustrated the books.
Their adventures took them and millions of children through the Hundred Acre Woods. Each character played a unique role in the books. Whether the wisdom of Owl or Rabbit lead the group awry or a celebration ensued, the story’s characters became beloved around the world.
In the 1960s, Disney bought the rights to the Winnie-the-Pooh characters dropping the hyphen from Pooh’s name. The illustrations were a bit different, too.
Milne’s stories have been translated into over 50 languages and are considered classic children’s stories today.

NATIONAL PEKING DUCK DAY
National Peking Duck Day, on January 18th, recognizes the national dish of China.
This dish is considered a delicacy due to its elaborate preparation and intense flavors. Since the Yuan Dynasty established by Kublai Khan, the process for preparing Peking Duck is rooted in tradition and has been perfected over thousands of years.
The crispy, flavorful skin is the signature element of Peking Duck.
The preferred bird for this dish is the White Beijing duck or in the United States, the Pekin duck. They are raised for 65 days before being brought to slaughter.
It is plucked, pumped full of air between the skin and the meat, soaked in boiling water, skewered, and hung to dry. While drying, the duck is glazed with a sugar coating and left for 24 hours. This whole process adds to the crispness of the skin.
The duck is then roasted hanging from the center of the oven to allow the fat to drip, basting the skin as it does. When presented, the Peking duck is often sliced artfully by the chef before the diners. Traditionally served in three portions, a Peking duck meal begins with the crispy skin, which diners dip into sugar. Following the skin, thin pancakes are filled with the tender duck meat, hoisin and bean sauces, and cucumbers, onions, and garlic. The final serving is a duck soup or broth.

Happy Birthday to the New Orleans Public Library! In 1896, Mayor John Fitzpatrick sponsored legislation that consolidated the Fisk Free Library housed in St. Patrick's Hall on Camp Street with a new municipal library. They eventually relocated to this building in 1908 on St. Charles Avenue at Lee Circle, stocked with more than 35,000 volumes, courtesy of philanthropist Andrew Carnegie. Sadly, the building was demolished in 1960 and replaced with a modern office building for the John Hancock Insurance Company that is now known as K&B Plaza
The Sylvester Larned Institute, first organized in 1870 by the First Presbyterian Church as an experiment in the education of young ladies in New Orleans, was named for the Reverend Sylvester Larned who came to New Orleans in 1818 as a Presbyterian missionary. He established one of the first Presbyterian congregations on the corner of Canal Street and Bourbon Street. Unfortunately, the Massachusetts native fell victim to yellow fever in only his second year of his ministry. He had elected to remain in the city to minister to those who could not afford to flee the city during “the sickly season.” He was only 24-years old.
Located at 402 - 404 Carondelet Street (old numbering system) between Terpsichore and Polymnia Streets, the campus was under the supervision of W.O. Rogers, who oversaw fourteen professors and teachers. The original 1870 campus expanded from twenty boarders, growing to two hundred students by 1874 when this image was produced. Courses included English Literature, Natural Science, Mathematics, Ancient and Modern Languages (French, German, and Latin), Vocal and Instrumental Music, Drawing and Painting. A rare portrait of Rev. Larned by Eliab Metcalf executed shortly before Larned’s death resides in the Historic New Orleans Collection of Louisiana Portraits.
By 1874 the First Presbyterian Church had removed to Lafayette Square into a building designed by Henry Howard, easily identified by its 219-foot main tower, spire, and pinnacle.

"All tequila is mezcal but not all mezcal is tequila." The first time I heard that statement I was a little confused. But with a little research the meaning became clearer - Mezcal is the umbrella term for spirits made using the agave plant. Under that umbrella are tequila, mezcal and other lesser known spirits like raicilla and bacanora - all made with some variety of agave. Think of it like Whiskey - all Bourbon is Whiskey but not all Whiskey is Bourbon as it can be Scotch, Rye, Irish, Japanese, etc.

While both Tequila and Mezcal are made with agave, the similarities pretty much stop there. Tequila has to come specifically from the blue Weber agave, where Mezcal can be made from nearly 50 different varieties. Both have very specific areas of production or Denominations of Origin (DO) - Tequila has 5 DO's, Mezcal has 9 and 3 overlap between the two. They also have different production processes - with tequila the pinas (hearts of the agave plant) are pressure cooked in large industrial ovens while with Mezcal the pinas are baked in earthen pits that smoke and caramelize the heart of the agave.

Tequila is definitely the more popular of the two and that popularity has helped open the door for Mezcal - but many people have had a bad Mezcal experience which has then shut that door for one of the most amazing and unique spirits in the world. There are 2 reactions I get when I talk about Mezcal; people either cringe and make an awful face or their eyes light up with excitement. I am in the later category...

I could go on and on about what makes Mezcal unique - the character of the specific agave plant, the terroir, the production method passed from generations... much like wine, it is an authentic, hand crafted, artisanal product with a deep cultural significance and the more I learn about Mezcal the more I want to know.

Walter 'Wolfman' Washington & The Roadmasters
Hosted by d.b.a. New Orleans and StageIt

1-20-21
Every Wednesday Streaming LIVE on StageIt from d.b.a in New Orleans.

Walter “Wolfman” Washington has been a mainstay in the New Orleans music scene since the early 1960s. He cut his teeth backing up some of the best singers and performers in New Orleans history including Lee Dorsey, Johnny Adams, and Irma Thomas before putting together his long time band The Roadmasters, who have been burning down and burning up local and national stages since their first gigs in the 1980s. This new record confirms what fans have known for years: Walter “Wolfman Washington has soul to go along with that fire.

Out of an abundance of caution and in consideration of the safety of visitors and staff, NOMA is temporarily revising our hours of operation.

through March 3, 2021, the museum will now be closed Monday through Wednesday.

NOMA will be open to visitors Thursday through Sunday, 10 AM – 6 PM. The Besthoff Sculpture Garden will remain open from Wednesday through Sunday from 9:30 AM through sundown (5 PM). During this interim period, Louisiana residents will receive free museum admission on Thursdays, courtesy of The Helis Foundation.
We are paying close attention to COVID-19 infection rates across our city and state. As per the medical and scientific experts, we are anticipating a spike in January and February following the holidays. NOMA will use this additional day of closure for sanitization protocols, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for visitors and staff.

It’s a place where the community can interact with local artisans, crafters, farmers, chefs and more as they share their passion for making handmade goods, homegrown produce and prepared foods.
The weekly market takes place each Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the Madisonville Park & Playground, located on Pine Street near the 1000 block (closest cross street is Jahncke Ave.). Over 40 vendors offer hot and ready-to-eat foods, chocolates and candies, cookies and baked goods, jams and jellies, sauces and seasonings, flowers, plants, eggs, cheeses, fruits, veggies, local honey and selections by local vintners. Also, you'll find original art, handmade jewelry and accessories, hand-dyed fabrics, hand-sewn leather goods, wooden creations, soaps and body care products, health and wellness items, home decor items, baby clothes and hand sewn masks.
Shopping aside, families will enjoy the nearby playground, and be sure to look for on-site artists and massage therapists when you're ready to take a break from your shopping. There's also a concession stand on the ballfield with bottled water and sodas.

The non-profit Northshore Maker’s Market Foundation partners with local government, businesses, and other non-profit organizations to fund local projects such as the restoration of historic sites in Madisonville, and the education of young adults ages 14-24 in the arts, trades, agriculture, and entrepreneurship through donations, fundraisers, and mentorship efforts, all with an approach of attaining sustainable solutions for healthier living.
