ALL AMERICAN PET PHOTO DAY | JULY 11
All American Pet Photo Day encourages pet owners to share their favorite pet photos on July 11th. Be sure to charge your camera and be prepared to take adorable pictures of your pets!
Whether they are the four-legged furry kind or come from the more serpentine species, click away. Fishes and birds, pigs and equine, canine and feline should all get in line for their favorite pose. If they are friends, take a few snapshots of them together! On All American Pet Photo Day, every pet gets included.
When it comes to capturing the perfect image of your loyal pal, it might take some effort. Like humans, some furry and not so furry friends are camera shy. A pocketful of treats helps ease them into the shot. If bribery doesn’t work, sometimes exercise before the photoshoot will. Another option is misdirection. Focus their attention on another area beyond the lens of the camera, and you might get the picture you want. If all else fails, wait until your sweet companion falls asleep and click away. They’re at their cutest when they’re resting anyway.
Remember to keep your pet safe and comfortable. Don’t let your pet become overheated or over-anxious. A stressed pet won’t take a good photo. Defer to your pet’s temperament, toss out the costumes, and accept the blurred selfie.

NATIONAL CHEER UP THE LONELY DAY
Each year on July 11th, people across the United States make a special effort to give someone a lift on National Cheer up the Lonely Day.
If you know someone who is lonely or going through a difficult time, be a bright spot in their life with a little extra thoughtfulness today. Whether their loneliness is due to health issues, financial reasons, grief due to loss or personal reasons, isolation can be overwhelming. Use this day as a reminder to contact those people in your life who need a little extra love and attention. Your small act of kindness can make a big difference to them. One word or special consideration may brighten their world at just the right moment.
A burden shared is a burden halved. ~ T.A. Webb Let’s Hear it for the Boy
We are all lonely from time to time. The gift of companionship and support when we least expect it may not solve our problems, but it eases the burden a little.

Queen Nefertari’s Egypt
New Orleans Museum of Art
|
Public
The queen is coming. "Queen Nefertari's Egypt" is on view through July 17, 2022, at NOMA.
Queen Nefertari, the royal wife of Pharaoh Ramesses II (reigned 1279–13 BCE), is linked to some of the most magnificent monuments of ancient Egypt. Appearing in sculpture and images, and identified in inscriptions on buildings associated with Ramesses II, she is also known through a complete temple consecrated to her in Abu Simbel, beside the one dedicated to her husband. Her tomb is the largest and most richly decorated in the Valley of the Queens. It was discovered in the early 20th century by a team of archaeologists led by Ernesto Schiaparelli, then director of the Museo Egizio in Turin.
The team’s discoveries and the role of Nefertari and other powerful women in ancient Egypt are brought to life through the 230 exceptional objects in this exhibition, drawn from the collection of the Museo Egizio. These include statues, jewelry, vases, papyrus, steles, wooden coffins, and stone sarcophagi, as well as tools and various items of daily life from the artisan village of Deir-el-Medina, home to those who created the royal tombs. These astonishing treasures showcase the legacy of the royal wives, sisters, daughters, and mothers of pharaohs, and sometimes even pharaohs themselves, as well as the artists who contributed to the creation of these stunning objects.
__
Queen Nefertari’s Egypt is organized by the Museo Egizio, Turin, and StArt, in collaboration with the New Orleans Museum of Art. The presentation in New Orleans is made possible by the generous support of the Eugenie and Joseph Jones Family Foundation and the Consulate General of Italy in Houston

For more information about planning for an evacuation with pets, visit
|
|
Do it now: Make a hurricane plan for your pets while things are calm, using these important suggestions
|
While each pet’s situation is unique, here is a general checklist to consider when preparing to evacuate:
PAPERWORK: Are pets up-to-date on vaccines, and are copies of their medical records readily available? All boarding facilities and veterinarian offices will require proof of immunization before accepting pets.
Once a storm enters the Gulf, it may be too late, so make an appointment with your vet now to get those vaccinations and copies of any needed records.
Place copies of the pet's microchip information, registration, adoption papers, vaccination documents, medical records and any other relevant records in a clear plastic bag or waterproof container.
IDENTIFICATION: Is the microchip registered with current contact information? This is a permanent form of identification that can be vital in reuniting with your pet if it gets lost.
An ID tag with up-to-date contact information is the quickest way to identify the owner of a lost dog.
WHERE TO: Whether the destination is Houston or Birmingham or anywhere in between, pinpoint your evacuation spot now and then identify a few pet-friendly accommodation options in that area.
FOOD AND WATER: Bring a supply of food and plenty of bottled drinking water. Don't forget the food dishes. Keep food in an airtight, waterproof container.
If your pet is on a prescription diet, stock up for the duration of storm season in case an unexpected departure takes place and you cannot get to the vet before leaving.
MEDICATIONS: Even if your pet isn't currently taking all of the medications you have on hand, bring them all anyway. If you end up being gone for an extended period, it is much easier to have these items with you than trying to find a vet who will fill a prescription or sell a medication to someone who isn’t their patient, without an exam. Keep an extra supply of pet medicines in a waterproof container. Just bring it all, everything you have — trust me on this.
PET CARRIER: Carriers should be large enough for pets to stand up, completely turn around and lie down. Put your name, address, phone number and an alternate contact on the carrier.
ACCESSORIES AND SUPPLIES: Include leashes, harnesses, pet litter, newspapers, towels, plastic trash bags and cleaners so you can walk the dogs and clean up after all pets. Remember, your pantry is not at the hotel, and you don’t know what you need until you need it. Cleaning a guinea pig cage in a hotel room shower is something I never want to have to do again.

Monthlong P.O.W.E.R. Plates Women’s Fundraising Program , July 6
NEW ORLEANS
The monthlong celebration of women in the state’s hospitality industry is part of Fidelity’s “Potential of Women Entrepreneurs Realized” (P.O.W.E.R.) program, which caters to thousands of female-owned businesses. Currently, program officials are seeking women-owned, women-managed or women-led restaurants and bars to participate in the annual fundraising program. The goal of the program is to raise awareness and drive business to women-led restaurants in South Louisiana during the slow summer business months.
“The hospitality industry in Louisiana and its workers are vital to our state. P.O.W.E.R. Plates’ mission is to help support this critical industry by driving business to these women-led restaurants.” said Elizabeth Broekman, Fidelity Bank Vice President and Director of P.O.W.E.R. “In addition, we are raising awareness of the Louisiana Hospitality Foundation’s mission of supporting Louisiana’s hospitality industry workforce during times of personal crisis for our workers in such a vital industry.”
The Louisiana Hospitality Foundation and Fidelity Bank are matching donations up to $2,500 for this year’s program. After a record 67 restaurants and bars participated in 2021, officials have set a goal of recruiting 75 restaurants throughout South Louisiana. Neat Wine is the participating wine sponsor and a special beer for the program was released by Port Orleans Brewery.
“Women in the Louisiana hospitality industry have a tremendous impact in our lives any time we go out for a meal, a drink or stay in a hotel,” said Fidelity Bank President and CEO Chris Ferris. “Programs like Fidelity Bank’s P.O.W.E.R. program are crucial in bringing women to the forefront and highlighting their successes and P.O.W.E.R. Plates is the perfect way to showcase these amazing women.”

NATIONAL BLUEBERRY MUFFIN DAY | JULY 11
National Blueberry Muffin Day on July 11th gives us a great reason to get up in the morning and celebrate! Americans love their blueberry muffins so much, it’s their number 1 favorite muffin flavor. Whether it is for breakfast or a snack, blueberry muffins are melt-in-your-mouth delicious.
While enjoying a delicious blueberry muffin, consider the powerhouse the blueberry is. This once wild berry became domesticated during the early 1900s thanks to the observations of Elizabeth Coleman White and the research of Dr. Frederick V. Coville. Before their efforts, wild blueberries were never successfully transplanted and raised in any farming operation for personal or commercial production. The only way to enjoy fresh blueberries was to seek them out where they grew naturally.
Today we can enjoy the abundant potassium, vitamin C and B6, and other health benefits of the blueberry much more readily than they did 120 years ago. We bake them into muffins and eat them by the handfuls. They are so likable that we celebrate blueberries as a popsicle, cheesecake and a popover day, too! Don’t forget, July is also National Blueberry Month.

NATIONAL MOJITO DAY | July 11
Each year on July 11th, people across America raise a glass to mark National Mojito Day. The cocktail consists of white rum, sugar, lime juice, sparkling water, and mint.
The Mojito is a traditional Cuban highball, and while rumored to be a drink favored by the author Ernest Hemingway, it’s never been proven. It seems the story behind Hemingway and the Mojito is a tall tale to attract visitors and to sell drinks. Isn’t every origin story behind a drink designed to sell more of the original anyway?
Whether Hemingway ever had a Mojito or even liked it, doesn’t matter. With a low alcohol content, this refreshing cocktail gains popularity in the summertime for its refreshing combination of sweetness, citrus, and mint flavors. The exhilarating flavor says summer and stimulates the palate, too. The Mojito serves up a perfect pairing with barbecues and evenings at the beach.
Lime wedges and mint leaves garnish an ice filled glass of Mojito.
Although born in Cuba, the exact origin of the Mojito remains under debate with roots as early as 1586.
A variety of recipes add fruit to the Mojito for unique summer combinations. The already refreshing beverage lends itself to being mixed in large pitchers for serving a crowd or individual drinks for one or two people. Mixes also offer the simplicity of just adding rum. However, fresh, simple ingredients bring out the best flavor of a Mojito.

NATIONAL RAINIER CHERRY DAY | JULY 11
National Rainier Cherry Day on July 11th recognizes the cherry variety named after Mount Rainier. In 1952, Harry Fogle of Washington State University developed the Rainier cherry by cross-breeding the Bing and Van cherry varieties.
The sweet Rainier cherries have a thin skin and a thin creamy-yellow flesh. Cherries are a temperamental crop that is sensitive to temperature, wind, and rain. Each season, birds eat almost one-third of the crop. While cherries in general present growing challenges, Rainier cherries are unique. Their delicate skins require the cherries to be hand-picked. However, superior taste keeps producers and consumers coming back for more.
Due to their superior taste, Rainiers are considered a premium cherry.
This popular fruit is in such high demand that growers take extra pains to ensure the fruit does not go to the birds. They cover the trees in nets and plant them between red cherry trees to encourage the bees to pollinate the blossoms. Besides hand-picking the fruit, the harvesters place the cherries into small bags to avoid bruising. Every necessary precaution is taken, so the cherries arrive in the market in perfect and delicious condition.
In honor of the day and as part of the Tree-to-Table program, the Northwest Cherry Growers hand-pick one restaurant in each state to feature at least one Rainier cherry dish on July 11th in their restaurants.

Students at the LSU Audubon Sugar School engaged in field work as well as laboratory work. The Audubon Sugar School and Experiment Station was one of the first American research facilities developed for the scientific investigation of an industry with its own school for training future engineers and leaders. Audubon Park Sugar Station influenced the rebuilding of Louisiana’s sugar industry.
Sugarcane cultivation began in Louisiana in the 1730s-40s. The subtropical climate and proximity to the sugar plantations of the Caribbean Islands made Louisiana an ideal location. Successes in sugar manufacture were limited and unprofitable until 1795 when Étienne de Boré developed a viable process for manufacturing sugar granules that revolutionized the industry. Technological innovations ignited a boom in sugar business that markedly increased after Louisiana became a part of the United States in 1803. The introduction of steam power to the industry in 1822, combined with its growing economic success, helped place sugar as the top cash crop of Louisiana in the 1840s-50s. Expansion of sugar production also led to the expansion of the slave trade, which was dividing the nation politically in two. Sugar production came to a halt in the 1860s during the Civil War, and many plantations did not survive the war. Federal take-over during Reconstruction and the difficult transition to wage labor resulted in a slow rebuild of the sugar industry across Louisiana.
By the late 1800s the sugar industry itself experienced its own revolution. Scientific advances made in Germany with beet-sugar were changing the sugar industry and its approach. New scientific developments involving chemical control and experimental research challenged traditional methods. Even before the Civil War several attempts were made to establish an experimental farm for sugar in Louisiana. In 1885 the Sugar Experiment Station was founded in Kenner, LA, sponsored by the Louisiana Planters’ Association with Dr. W.C. Stubbs appointed as director. Invoking the Hatch Act of 1887, the Board of Supervisors of LSU assumed responsibility of the Sugar Experiment Station which was moved to a new location at Audubon Park in New Orleans.

we are reminded once again that cotton was king in New Orleans as evidenced by this 1881 engraving from Frank Leslie’s Illustrated newspaper from April 30, 1881. The scene depicts the cotton packet Henry Frank loaded with 9,226 bales of cotton. At approximately 500-pounds per bale, that’s a cargo load of over 4.6 million pounds.
The Henry Frank was owned by the Memphis and New Orleans Packet Company. She was 285-feet by 52-feet with 12-foot draft capable of handling 2,600 tons of cargo. Her six boilers were each 28-feet long and 42-inches in diameter. The Henry Frank left Memphis on March 24th with 2,596 bales of cotton and 500 sacks of cotton seed meal. At points along the route, she added to her cargo and when she left Natchez on April 1st, she held the largest cargo of cotton ever floated on the Mississippi River. The engraving was based on a photograph by E.M. Bidwell shown below (University of Wisconsin – Madison).
The amount of cotton carried during the ten trips that season into New Orleans by the Henry Frank totaled 68,515 bales or an average of 6,851 bales per trip. Now, think of all of the other steamboats moving up and down the Mississippi into New Orleans and you’ll agree that cotton was indeed king.

Zony Mash is proud to be the home of Rebirth Brass Band EVERY Tuesday through June!
Doors at 7pm, Show at 8pm
Whether seen on HBO’s Treme or at their legendary Tuesday night gig at The Maple Leaf, Grammy-winning Rebirth Brass Band is a true New Orleans institution. Formed in 1983 by the Frazier brothers, the band has evolved from playing the streets of the French Quarter to playing festivals and stages all over the world. While committed to upholding the tradition of brass bands, they’ve also extended themselves into the realms of funk and hip-hop to create their signature sound. “Rebirth can be precise whenever it wants to,” says The New York Times, “but it’s more like a party than a machine. It’s a working model of the New Orleans musical ethos: as long as everybody knows what they’re doing, anyone can cut loose.” In the wake of the sometimes- stringent competition amongst New Orleans brass bands, Rebirth is the undisputed leader of the pack, and they show no signs of slowing down

JULY 13th: Vive la France! French Cheeses and Wine

We’re sticking to the classics, these are the cheeses that set France in the global cheese pantheon!
“Only peril can bring the French together. One can't impose unity out of the blue on a country that has 265 different kinds of cheese.”
-Charles de Gualle
This class will feature a flight of five cheese and wine pairings, all French of course.
