NATIONAL AMERICAN EAGLE DAY | JUNE 20
Each year on June 20th, National American Eagle Day honors our national symbol, raising awareness for protecting the Bald Eagle. The day also encourages the recovery of their natural environments while providing educational outreach.
The Bald Eagle is both the national bird and the national animal of The United States of America and appears on its Seal.
In the latter 20th century, the Bald Eagle hovered on the brink of extinction in the continental United States. Eventually, populations recovered and on July 12, 1995, the species was removed from the U.S. Federal Government’s List of Endangered Species and transferred to the List of Threatened Species. In June of 2007, as the species continued to thrive, the American Eagle was withdrawn from the List of Endangered and Threatened Wildlife in the Lower 48 States.
Eagle Habitat and Facts
The Bald Eagle’s range includes most of Canada, Alaska, all of the contiguous United States, and northern Mexico. They nest near large bodies of open water where abundant food supplies and old-growth trees abound.
Opportunistic feeders, Bald Eagles survive mainly on fish, swooping down and snatching them from the water. Their nests are the largest nests of any North American bird and the largest tree nests ever recorded for any animal species. The largest recorded eagle’s nest was found in St. Petersburg, Florida. It measured 9.5 feet in diameter and 20 feet deep and weighed in at nearly 3 tons.
These majestic raptors tally up quite a list of facts. A fully grown female Bald Eagle has a wingspan of 2 meters (7 feet) and weighs 3 to 7 kilograms (7 to 15 pounds). Male eagles are slightly smaller. They also mate for life and live between 20-30 years. As a power bird of prey, an eagle’s sharp sense of sight joins powerful muscles, piercing talons, and beak, making them primed for the hunt.
Although the raptor is also known as the Bald Eagle, the name derives from an older meaning of “white-headed.” The bird isn’t bald at all. The adult eagle is mainly brown with a white head and tail.

The Louisiana Restaurant Association’s Greater New Orleans Chapter, in partnership with New Orleans & Company, is excited to announce its 11th Annual Restaurant Week New Orleans will be held June 21-27, 2021. A special thanks to our 2021 Restaurant Week New Orleans presenting sponsors—TABASCO®, Louisiana Seafood and the Louisiana Office of Tourism.
During this weeklong celebration of New Orleans cuisine, participating restaurants in the New Orleans metro area will offer special pre-fixe menus including a two-course lunch for $25 or less and a three-course dinner or brunch for $45 or less. Many establishments are continuing to embrace the takeout trend brought on by the pandemic and offering a to-go option.
Restaurant Week is a welcomed event for many business owners. While the industry may not be 100 percent back to normal, restaurants want diners to know they are open for business and thankful for the community’s support. The timing of this year’s event is fortuitous given that the city has eased many restrictions and lifted its city-wide mask mandate for those who are vaccinated.
“People are returning to our beloved restaurants with confidence in the industry,” explained LRA President and CEO Stan Harris. “Some people haven’t visited our restaurants in over a year, and now, as more people are getting vaccinated, they’ll hopefully feel a little more comfortable dining out in one of our world famous establishments.”
There’s a diverse lineup of participating restaurants ranging from fine-dining establishments to neighborhood favorites. Discover new places or try something new at a trusty staple from nearly 70 restaurants registered to participate to date.
This year’s sponsors include TABASCO®, Louisiana Seafood and the Louisiana Office of Tourism Community Coffee and Louisiana Lottery.
To browse participating restaurants’ menus, visit www.restaurantweekneworleans.com. Reservations are strongly encouraged, and diners can do so through the website or restaurant directly. Don’t forget to share your Restaurant Week New Orleans experiences on social media using the hashtag, #RestaurantWeekNOLA. The fee to participate is waived for LRA-member restaurants. Please contact Nicol Jameson, njameson@lra.org or (504) 636-6527 for additional information.

Costera, 4938 Prytania St., 504-302-2332
Costera uses local produce and Gulf seafood to create classic dishes from coastal Spain. For Restaurant Week, the specific dishes and quantities in the four-course tasting menu will vary with the number of diners. Below is a sample Restaurant Week menu for four guests, at $65 per guest.
The first course features citrus and vermouth marinated olives, griddled sourdough with boquerones, and beef shank and potato bombas. For the second course, the offerings include mixed roasted mushrooms with warm egg yolk and sourdough; seared yellowfin tuna; and charred romaine with spring vegetables. The entrée course includes seafood paella, boneless ribeye, patatas bravas and wilted broccoli with savoy cabbage. The meal is topped off with a dark chocolate terrine or salted honey tart with buttermilk ice cream.
Located in the Pontchartrain Hotel, this restaurant with a name inspired by the Tennessee Williams’ play “The Rose Tattoo” is famous for its Mile High Pie.
Jack Rose’s Restaurant Week menu consists of three courses for $70: roasted heirloom tomatoes with asiago, pistou, toasted baguette; a petite filet with sauce vierge, crabmeat, watercress; and Summer Pavlova with lemon butter, berry medley and lavender.
Chef Justin Devillier, 2016 James Beard Award winner for Best Chef: South, and his wife, Mia Devillier, operate the acclaimed restaurant housed in a century-old building with a storied history. The price of their three-course Restaurant Week dinner runs from $35 to $50, depending on the entrée.

The two-course $25 Restaurant Week menu is served all day. The first course is prosciutto-wrapped jalapeño poppers with provolone pimento and balsamic. It’s followed by Pizza Domenica’s barbecue shrimp pizza, a NOLA-style shrimp with green onion and fresh mozzarella.
This restaurant, whose name refers to a garden arch or trellis, highlights locally sourced ingredients for its American cuisine.
The three-course $45 Restaurant Week menu starts with scallop crudo, whipped feta or baby back ribs. Entrées are a choice of pappardelle Bolognese, Prince Edward Island mussels or confit chicken quarter. For dessert, you can get a Ruston peach handpie or the gelato of the day.

CITY OF NEW ORLEANS ANNOUNCES FORMAL
ESTABLISHMENT OF DOMESTIC ABUSE FATALITY
REVIEW TEAM
NEW ORLEANS — Mayor LaToya Cantrell recently signed an ordinance formally establishing a Domestic Abuse Fatality Review Team (DAFRT) within the New Orleans Health Department (NOHD). The Review Team will be comprised of dedicated representatives from more than 20 community and criminal justice organizations.
The DAFRT will identify trends, patterns and potential interventions for reducing the prevalence of domestic abuse and related fatalities. It requires the NOHD to produce and disseminate an annual report outlining team findings and highlighting recommendations.
"The establishment of this review team coincides with my administration’s holistic approach to treating public safety as a matter of public health," said Mayor Cantrell. "This also shows that when all of our criminal justice stakeholders come together, we are better able to create initiatives and programs that will make our overall public safety agencies stronger, our residents safer and our prevention and intervention efforts more effective. We will continue to work diligently produce results that lead to a safer New Orleans for all our residents."
Over the last 10 years, an average of 10 percent of all homicides in Orleans Parish were identified as fatalities resulting directly from domestic abuse. The review team will provide information and analysis to identify gaps in systemic interventions and develop recommendations to prevent future fatalities. Domestic Abuse Fatality Review Teams have been established in cities across the country to understand better how systems can more effectively meet the needs of domestic abuse victims and survivors, and thus reduce fatalities in the community.
"This fatality review team will help us take a deeper look at violent domestic incidents to see where the gaps are in services that possibly prevented a victim from getting help before it was too late," said Dr. Jennifer Avegno, Director of the New Orleans Health Department. "This will allow us to collectively develop better preventative programs and interventions to stop future violence."
Among the agencies required to participate in the NOHD DAFRT include:
- The New Orleans Police Department
- New Orleans Emergency Medical Services
- Orleans Parish Communications District
- Orleans Parish District Attorney's Office
- Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office
- Orleans Parish Criminal District Court
- New Orleans Family Justice Center
Additional representatives will be a part of the review team, including those from state agencies, local universities and colleges, batterer intervention programs, local hospitals and medical organizations and community-based civil legal service agencies.
In 2019, the NOHD's Domestic Violence & Sexual Assault Program (DV&SA) began reviewing domestic fatality characteristics to contextualize and document this issue in the community. The report found that while domestic fatalities make up only a tiny fraction of all domestic violence-related incidents, the impact on families and communities was devastating.
NOHD will convene with the team throughout the year and review the city's circumstances and details of all domestic abuse fatalities.

Public
The queen is coming. "Queen Nefertari's Egypt" is on view through July 17, 2022, at NOMA.
Queen Nefertari, the royal wife of Pharaoh Ramesses II (reigned 1279–13 BCE), is linked to some of the most magnificent monuments of ancient Egypt. Appearing in sculpture and images, and identified in inscriptions on buildings associated with Ramesses II, she is also known through a complete temple consecrated to her in Abu Simbel, beside the one dedicated to her husband. Her tomb is the largest and most richly decorated in the Valley of the Queens. It was discovered in the early 20th century by a team of archaeologists led by Ernesto Schiaparelli, then director of the Museo Egizio in Turin.
The team’s discoveries and the role of Nefertari and other powerful women in ancient Egypt are brought to life through the 230 exceptional objects in this exhibition, drawn from the collection of the Museo Egizio. These include statues, jewelry, vases, papyrus, steles, wooden coffins, and stone sarcophagi, as well as tools and various items of daily life from the artisan village of Deir-el-Medina, home to those who created the royal tombs. These astonishing treasures showcase the legacy of the royal wives, sisters, daughters, and mothers of pharaohs, and sometimes even pharaohs themselves, as well as the artists who contributed to the creation of these stunning objects.
__
Queen Nefertari’s Egypt is organized by the Museo Egizio, Turin, and StArt, in collaboration with the New Orleans Museum of Art. The presentation in New Orleans is made possible by the generous support of the Eugenie and Joseph Jones Family Foundation and the Consulate General of Italy in Houston

HEAT ADVISORY ISSUED IN NEW ORLEANS THROUGH TUESDAY, JUNE 21
NEW ORLEANS — The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory in the New Orleans area through Tuesday, June 21 at 7 p.m.
The weather forecast indicates that high humidity levels will result in heat index values ranging from 108 to 112 degrees in New Orleans through Saturday, June 18. Slightly drier air may keep peak heat index values in the 100-105 degree range Sunday through Tuesday.
These hot temperatures can become life-threatening if the proper precautions are not taken. Residents can visit https://weatherwise.nola.gov/ to find localized updates on weather conditions when considering outdoor activities.
Individuals seeking shelter during the daytime may visit the following locations:
- All New Orleans Public Library locations are open Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Friday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with the following exceptions:
- Nix is closed for Capital Projects
- Alvar only has contactless pick up at this time
- All locations will be closed Monday, June 20 in commemoration of Juneteenth

NATIONAL VANILLA MILKSHAKE DAY | JUNE 20
On June 20th each year, National Vanilla Milkshake Day celebrates the cold beverage made with vanilla ice cream, vanilla, and milk.
This frosty drink didn’t begin with those three ingredients, though. In 1885, the term “milkshake” showed up in print for the first time. The concoction of cream, eggs, and whiskey was often served with other alcoholic tonics such as lemonades and soda waters.
By 1900, a milkshake often referred to “wholesome drinks made with chocolate, strawberry or vanilla syrups.” In these frothy beverages, ice cream was nowhere to be found. However, a few years later in the early 1900s, people began asking for this new treat with a scoop of ice cream. By the 1930s, malt shops were serving milkshakes all over the United States.
Maybe you want to top off your vanilla milkshake with a little bit of whipped cream and a cherry on top!!

NATIONAL KOUIGN AMANN DAY | JUNE 20
National Kouign Amann Day on June 20th each year celebrates a round crusty cake, made with a yeast-raised dough. Bakers create the cake by folding layers of butter and sugar inward, similar in fashion to a puff pastry or croissants but with fewer layers. They then slowly bake the resulting cake until the butter puffs up the dough creating the layered aspect of it and the sugar caramelizes.
Kouign amann is pronounced kween ah-mon.
The name comes from the Breton words for cake, kouign, and butter, amann. In Brittany, Kouign amann is a popular and traditional pastry. There it originated in 1860 when flour was scarce, but butter was abundant.
Now, if you like croissants and you like glazed donuts, you’ll love kouign amann. The flaky, buttery texture of the croissant meets the sweet sugary topping of a donut. But it’s not a cronut. It’s a kouign amann, and it’s been around much longer, too. Plus, it’s celebrated every June 20th.

People often comment about how large many of the vintage automobiles were and how difficult it must have been to navigate along the streets of New Orleans. Well, imagine the difficulties for the streetcar operators in the French Quarter as evidenced by this image from 1944 of a female operator deftly guiding the Desire streetcar down Royal Street past the Monteleone Hotel. The hotel was the state campaign headquarters of Jimmie Davis who would eventually win the first of two terms in 1944.

Rebirth Brass Band EVERY Tuesday at Zony Mash!
Zony Mash Beer Project
Public
Zony Mash is proud to be the home of Rebirth Brass Band EVERY Tuesday through June!
Doors at 7pm, Show at 8pm
Whether seen on HBO’s Treme or at their legendary Tuesday night gig at The Maple Leaf, Grammy-winning Rebirth Brass Band is a true New Orleans institution. Formed in 1983 by the Frazier brothers, the band has evolved from playing the streets of the French Quarter to playing festivals and stages all over the world. While committed to upholding the tradition of brass bands, they’ve also extended themselves into the realms of funk and hip-hop to create their signature sound. “Rebirth can be precise whenever it wants to,” says The New York Times, “but it’s more like a party than a machine. It’s a working model of the New Orleans musical ethos: as long as everybody knows what they’re doing, anyone can cut loose.” In the wake of the sometimes- stringent competition amongst New Orleans brass bands, Rebirth is the undisputed leader of the pack, and they show no signs of slowing down
