watch our newly released series of videos on this history
The turn of the 20th century saw the introduction of new instruments, new sounds, and new playing styles that profoundly changed the musical landscape of New Orleans (and eventually the world). By the 1910s, these musical innovations—most notably, elements of jazz—forged the sound, look, and feel of traditional New Orleans brass bands. Over the next five decades, brass bands provided the beats for parades and funerals, playing a repertoire that grew to include marches, dirges, hymns, blues, and popular songs of the day. This image shows a 1960 funeral procession.

Virtual gig listings from New Orleans musicians, so you can support and enjoy live, local music. Without leaving home.

While normal gigs are not being held during the pandemic, we'll be updating the WWOZ OnlineWire, a calendar of virtual gigs, in the place of the regular WWOZ Livewire. These are happening on a variety of platforms-- mostly social media. We're sharing links when and where we can.

Many musicians are offering digital "tip jars" via Venmo or other payment systems during these sets. Stay in and support some live, local music! As always, listings are subject to change.

NATIONAL SHRIMP DAY
Each year on May 10th, National Shrimp Day recognizes America’s favorite seafood. Americans eat more shrimp than any other seafood, and this is the day to celebrate this delicious seafood.
We use the word “prawn” loosely to describe any large shrimp, sometimes known as “jumbo shrimp.” Some countries use the word “prawn” exclusively for all shrimp.
Preparing the shrimp for consumption usually involves removing the head, shell, tail, and “sand vein.” There are many ways to cook shrimp. Standard methods of preparation include baking, boiling, broiling, sauteing, frying, and grilling. Cooking time is delicate for shrimp, and they are at their best when not overcooked.
A healthy food, shrimp, is low in calories and high in omega-3, calcium, iodine, and protein levels. Shrimp is also known to be considered good for the circulatory system.
 Popular North America Shrimp Dishes:
  • Seafood Gumbo: A stew or soup that probably originated in southern Louisiana during the 18th century. Seafood gumbo typically consists of a strongly-flavored stock, shrimp and crab meat (sometimes oysters), a thickener, and seasoning vegetables. Cooks categorize Gumbo by the type of thickener used: okra, the Choctaw spice, file powder (dried and ground sassafras leaves), or roux, the French base made of flour and fat.
  • Shrimp Cocktail: The Golden Gate served shrimp cocktails before any other restaurant. Their menu listed shrimp cocktails for .50 cents in 1959. It is now a Las Vegas cliché. Called the “Original Shrimp Cocktail” on the menu, it is a favorite among tourists and the locals. The original Shrimp Cocktail consists of a regular-sized sundae glass filled with small salad shrimp and topped with a dollop of cocktail sauce.
  • Shrimp DeJonghe: A specialty of Chicago, it is a casserole of the whole, peeled shrimp blanketed in soft, garlic, sherry-laced bread crumbs. Restaurants often serve it as an appetizer or a main course. It originated in the late 19th or early 20th century at the DeJonghe’s Hotel and Restaurant.
  • Shrimp Scampi: This dish has its own day on April 29, and it is cooked in butter, garlic, lemon juice, and white wine.

NATIONAL CLEAN UP YOUR ROOM DAY
Spring cleaners get their wish granted each year when National Clean Up Your Room Day arrives on May 10th. Children often dread this parent-appreciated day. Though, some years, the observance arrives with perfect timing for Mother’s Day!
However, the observance doesn’t only target kids. It is also about picking up, straightening up, and cleaning up the whole house. Adults take spring cleaning seriously, and homes get aired out. They organize, de-clutter, and rearrange. It’s time to fix the broken and match up missing parts, like with like. We tackle cluttered closets and donate or throw away those things we no longer use. Help your children make their beds, clean their rooms, and eliminate the toys and clothing they have outgrown.
The day helps garages, sheds, and cabinets see the light of day. Drawers, closets (did we say that already), and under the bed get thoroughly organized. Find ways to repurpose items around the house, too. Look at old things in new ways:
  • Use an old towel bar on your potting bench and hang S hooks to store your tools.
  • Broken dresser drawers become bookshelves or under-bed storage.
  • How many ways can you repurpose an unused wine rack?
  • storage for towels in the bathroom
  • take it to the craft area for all the small tools, glue and yarn
  • store water bottles and travel mugs
  • Tissue boxes make terrific storage for plastic bags, but they also work well for used dryer sheets. Reuse the dryer sheets to wipe down the washer and dryer to keep it dust-free and clean out the lint trap.
  • Use old magazine racks to store cutting boards, baking sheets, and other flat kitchen items.

Derby Gisclair
A 1940s era view of a very vibrant first block of Carondelet Street at the corner of Canal Street, replete with vintage automobiles, trucks, and streetcars. It looks to be in winter judging by the overcoats.

Dominating the right side of the image is Stein’s Clothes on the corner of Carondelet and Canal. This was the successor to Feibleman’s in 1935. Across the street at 168 Carondelet Street was the Addis Hotel that opened in 1938, managed by A.F. Truxillo who also managed the Adler Hotel at 725 Union Street, the Belmont Hotel at 635 Common Street, and the Lynrose Hotel at 508 St. Charles Avenue. The Star News Company was located at 104 Carondelet Street, the frequent site of police raids on illegal horse race gambling in their back rooms.

Further up the street was Hansell’s Stationary at 128 Carondelet Street, later to become Hansell-Petetin. In the following blocks began what used to be the heart of the city’s financial district with numerous banks, homesteads, and brokerage houses.

Exhibition Celebrates the Social Aid and Pleasure Clubs of New Orleans
NEW ORLEANS – The sights and sounds of a defining local cultural practice, second line parades, come alive in “Dancing in the Streets: Social Aid and Pleasure Clubs of New Orleans,” on view at The Historic New Orleans Collection to June 13, 2021.
Assembled in collaboration with more than 30 community partners and club members, the exhibition offers an intimate look at New Orleans street parades while also providing historical context of the tradition. Black mutual aid societies were founded in the 19th century to support African Americans and Afro-Creoles at a time when they were denied many social services, and second line parades are one of their most enduring legacies. Full of color, music, footwork, friends and neighbors, second line parades provide a weekly physical and symbolic gathering place for Black history and expression.

In the exhibition, displayed on the third level of THNOC’s Tricentennial Wing at 520 Royal Street in the French Quarter, parade regalia—from full suits to elaborate baskets and fans—gives viewers an up-close look at the unique artistry of second line parades. Images from a dozen contemporary photographers, including Judy Cooper, whose vision inspired the origin of this show, wrap around three gallery walls to re-create a second line from start to finish.

. COVID-19 safety protocols—facemasks, timed ticketing and limited gallery capacity to ensure social distancing—will be in place,

Ten Years of Decorative
Arts Fieldwork

Decorative arts objects—furniture, home furnishings, and the tools of daily life—carry the stories of the people who made and used them. The Historic New Orleans Collection’s exhibition Pieces of History showcases the Decorative Arts of the Gulf South (DAGS) project’s efforts to preserve and share these stories.
DAGS began in 2011, when New Orleans attorney and avid antiques collector Paul Haygood (1943–2015) established the Classical Institute of the South (CIS) to document decorative arts objects made or used in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama before 1865. Part of THNOC since 2015—and renamed DAGS this year—the project’s summer fellows travel to historic homes across the Gulf South to achieve this mission.
Pieces of History celebrates DAGS’s first decade by exhibiting significant objects cataloged by fieldwork teams alongside research photographs taken for the database. Field stories from the project’s alumni highlight memorable experiences and meaningful objects from the summers the fellows spent exploring the historic houses of the Gulf South. The exhibition also examines trade networks, cultural values, and the brutal system of enslavement that produced the Gulf South’s wealth.
Pieces of History is now open Tuesday–Saturday, 9:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m. and Sunday, 10:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m. Admission is free, but we suggest preordering tickets for timed entry. THNOC is adhering to all safety guidelines; visitors are required to wear face masks and observe social distancing limits.
The Historic New Orleans Collection gratefully acknowledges the sponsors of the exhibition, Nell H. and Fredric J. Figge and Mrs. Frank W. Masson.

Allstate Sugar Bowl Crescent City Classic and Ochsner Bring Back Me Time Challenge as New Mother’s Day Tradition Benefiting Women’s Wellness and Survivorship Center
 at Ochsner Baptist
Virtual Challenge Begins May 15, 2021 and Ends June 15, 2021
(New Orleans) – The Allstate Sugar Bowl Crescent City Classic and Ochsner Health are teaming up again to bring back the Me Time Challenge and create a new Mother’s Day tradition. The virtual challenge aims to help women prioritize self-care and wellness with health focused tips and special access to wellness and nutrition offers from Ochsner Health. The challenge is open to everyone from fitness beginners to workout experts, and participants will have the option of walking, jogging, running, cycling, swimming or any physical activity they choose to accumulate their miles.

All registrants receive a virtual bib, commemorative Me Time Challenge tank top or t-shirt (participant’s choice) and a finisher’s medallion. The entry cost for both the individual and team challenges is $36. A portion of challenge proceeds and all donations from participants will go directly to the Women’s Wellness and Survivorship Center at Ochsner Baptist, which provides comprehensive, coordinated care using a holistic approach to the unique healthcare needs of women, including specialized gynecologic care for cancer survivors.

“Mental and physical health are such vital issues for women in today’s world,” said Me Time Challenge Operations Director Kristen Stuart. “This year, we’re aligning Me Time Challenge with Mother’s Day to encourage women to create new Mother’s Day traditions and help people from around the globe get up, get out, get moving and get excited about improving their physical and mental health.”

There are two formats for the challenge: a 30-mile individual challenge and a 100-mile team challenge. For every five miles a participant logs, they will unlock health focused tips along with special access to wellness and nutrition offers provided by Ochsner Health to better physical and mental health. Participants will start tracking their miles via RunSignUp.com beginning Saturday, May 15. The deadline to log all individual or team miles is Tuesday, June 15, 2021.

“The Me Time Challenge is all about carving out time to focus on your overall wellbeing – both the physical and the mental – while also giving back to women in the community in need of the holistic care and support provided by the Women’s Wellness and Survivorship Center at Ochsner Baptist,” said Elizabeth Lapeyre, MD, Medical Director for the Women’s Wellness and Survivorship Center at Ochsner Baptist. “It’s important to remind women to take a step back from the busy world and tune into what their physical and mental needs are in that moment. If one is out of balance, the other is too and can impact your overall wellbeing.”

New Orleans
Greek Festival
Greek Feast - A Tribute to the Greek Festival will be presented on May 28 and 29, 2021, in a drive-up only setting with all purchases preordered and prepaid. Although the annual Greek Festival is scheduled for early November, the Holy Trinity Cathedral family will present some familiar, as well as new, offerings during the Memorial Day weekend that will include “heat and eat” options; convenient frozen items for individual or family enjoyment; and some cold salad, vegetable, and dessert delicacies. Whatever your selection, you can anticipate a delicious Greek fare!

Please note that pick-up hours were extended on the main day, Saturday, May 29, and three hours were added on Friday, May 28, to better serve you. Our goal is to provide an expedient and pleasant delivery experience for our patrons, particularly those who supported the Spring Greek Feast and had long wait times. By employing a more efficient delivery system, extending pick-up times, and limiting the number of orders per time slot, we aim to minimize your wait when you arrive. Also, for your convenience, a reminder will be emailed a few days prior to May 28 and 29, stating your selected time.
As always, your participation is deeply appreciated, and we look forward to serving you Memorial Day weekend!

Wine & Food Experience moves to summer
The New Orleans Wine & Food Experience has announced tickets are now on sale for the 2021 event. Due to COVID-19 safety precautions, organizers have moved NOWFE to a mid-summer event, taking place June 9-13. “We are excited about our summer plans,” states Aimee Brown, NOWFE Executive Director. “We will have several of our popular events, however, coming together safely is most important. Rest assured NOWFE 2021 will be a safe place to share your love of food and wine.” Events will have limited attendance; however, some events will have additional time slots added. “We’ve created several ticket packages to help guide our guests through the best experience that fits their needs,” said Joey Worley, NOWFE President. “With varying levels, everyone can find something to fit their budget and their schedule.”
