NATIONAL MIMOSA DAY | MAY 16
National Mimosa Day on May 16th gets its name from the Mimosa, a yellow flowering plant. This simple mixture of orange juice and champagne or sparkling wine resembles those flowers in color, however, the flavor adds a kick to most any brunch!
No matter the celebration, mimosas are served up in tall champagne glasses. They turn basic buffets and summer brunches into a festive occasion. You also don’t have to break the bank to make them. Fill the glasses half full with your favorite sparkling wine (it doesn’t have to be expensive champagne) and top it off with chilled orange juice. Garnish with an orange slice, and you’re all set.
Overnight guests will be delighted when you greet them with mimosas and an egg bake you prepared the night before. Or perhaps you’ll heat up the waffle maker. Whatever you serve, the morning will be a hit.

According to The Old Farmer's Almanac, each Full Moon of the year goes by several names. The name given to the April Full Moon is Pink Moon. It is also known as the Sprouting Grass Moon, the Egg Moon, and the Fish Moon.
As for why April's Moon is called the Pink Moon, the Almanac says: "This full Moon heralded the appearance of the 'moss pink,' or wild ground phlox — one of the first spring wildflowers."

The queen is coming. "Queen Nefertari's Egypt" is on view through July 17, 2022, at NOMA.
Queen Nefertari, the royal wife of Pharaoh Ramesses II (reigned 1279–13 BCE), is linked to some of the most magnificent monuments of ancient Egypt. Appearing in sculpture and images, and identified in inscriptions on buildings associated with Ramesses II, she is also known through a complete temple consecrated to her in Abu Simbel, beside the one dedicated to her husband. Her tomb is the largest and most richly decorated in the Valley of the Queens. It was discovered in the early 20th century by a team of archaeologists led by Ernesto Schiaparelli, then director of the Museo Egizio in Turin.
The team’s discoveries and the role of Nefertari and other powerful women in ancient Egypt are brought to life through the 230 exceptional objects in this exhibition, drawn from the collection of the Museo Egizio. These include statues, jewelry, vases, papyrus, steles, wooden coffins, and stone sarcophagi, as well as tools and various items of daily life from the artisan village of Deir-el-Medina, home to those who created the royal tombs. These astonishing treasures showcase the legacy of the royal wives, sisters, daughters, and mothers of pharaohs, and sometimes even pharaohs themselves, as well as the artists who contributed to the creation of these stunning objects.
__
Queen Nefertari’s Egypt is organized by the Museo Egizio, Turin, and StArt, in collaboration with the New Orleans Museum of Art. The presentation in New Orleans is made possible by the generous support of the Eugenie and Joseph Jones Family Foundation and the Consulate General of Italy in Houston

Play/Write Showcase
Mon, May 16
7:00pm
Goat in the Road Productions stages 16 student-written works, eight shows each night.
Goat in the Road Productions (GRP) is excited to announce the return of the award winning Play/Write Showcase! On Monday, May 16 & Tuesday, May 17 at 7 pm, 16 student-written plays will be performed by local theatre and dance companies at UNO’s Robert E. Nims Theatre (2000 Lakeshore Dr.). 8 shows will be presented each night. The event is FREE and family-friendly!
This year’s Play/Write performance groups are:
Dancing Grounds -- KM Dance Project -- Goat in The Road -- Intramural Theater
The Radical Buffoons -- Tulane Theatre Dept. -- Nari Tomasetti -- Beaubourg Theatre
These companies’ adult performers will bring the students’ words from the page to the stage, celebrating the creativity of all 350 students involved in the Play/Write program this year.
Participating schools are:
St. Mary’s Academy -- The International School of Louisiana
Young Audiences Charter School at Kate Middleton & Lawrence D.Crocker
This is GRP’s thirteenth year conducting the Play/Write program. Play/Write consists of yearlong playwriting classes conducted in four New Orleans schools. Over the course of the year, each student writes eight original scripts, and chooses one to expand into a full-length play. 16 of these plays are chosen for the Showcase. The event creates a direct link between the classroom and the stage. All students will attend the Showcase event during a morning field trip, where they will receive a formatted and professionally bound copy of their script. The evening Showcase performances are open to the students’ families and the public.
Goat In the Road Productions is a New Orleans based performance ensemble, dedicated to the production of original and invigorating new works or theatre, dance, performance art, and educational programming. For more information visit

Trendafilka is a modern exploration of European polyphonic traditions. Founded in New Orleans in 2016, the group grew out of a common desire for group singing as well as a collective fascination with culture and tradition. Trendafilka, named after the Balkan wild rose, draws repertoire from areas of Eastern Europe – the Balkans, the Baltics, the Caucasus, and the Eurasian Steppe – that hold rich cultural traditions of polyphonic singing.
In Trendafilka’s performances, songs from Bulgaria, Serbia, Latvia, Ukraine, Georgia, and the Roma diaspora are represented in 3, 4, and 5 distinct vocal lines. Dissonances and harmonies weave and swell throughout each song as common human themes are explored: grief, love, loss, jokes, and magic. Shifting between styles with ease, the singers work to blend their nine unique voices into one unified sound, creating a musical tapestry greater than the sum of its original parts.

On May 16th we celebrate National Coquilles Saint Jacques Day. This classic French dish is scallops in a creamy wine sauce, covered with breadcrumbs, and cheese, before it is browned, placed under a broiler. Cooks usually make this seafood scallop dish with a mixture of butter, cream, mushrooms, and their favorite cheese.
#CoquillesSaintJacquesDay
Coquilles Saint Jacques is also known as the Shell of St. James.
The scallop shell is a symbol of St. James, one of Jesus’ Twelve Apostles. Many legends surround the scallop shell and the symbolism associated with St. James. One suggests the scallop shell replaced bowls for water and food for pilgrims during their journey to Santiago de Compostela. Some also suggest that St. James used the scalloped shell to beg for food and water during his pilgrimage. In Christianity, the scallop shell also represents the symbol of baptism.
Coquilles Saint Jacques can be made with either bay or sea scallops. White wine, brandy, or cognac are used to cook the scallops. Most recipes call for Gruyere cheese but swiss may be substituted. Different recipes call for a variety of seasonings ranging from cayenne, tarragon, and paprika to curry and parsley. Bringing the entire dish together, it is then baked in the scallop shell. If you don’t have access to scallop shells, individual ramekins work well, too. French cut green beans with almonds and fried onions complement the scallops nicely if it is being served as the main course.

NATIONAL BARBECUE DAY | May 16
Each year on May 16 we celebrate National Barbecue Day in the United States. Whether you grill at home or grab some takeout, you will find Americans across the country enjoying an assortment of mouthwatering barbeque (BBQ) flavors and sauces.
In the world of barbecue, grillers decide how to cook their barbeque. Whether they choose charcoal, wood charcoal, wood, gas or slow cooking, they consider themselves the culinary expert of barbeque. Traditionally, Americans have four types of BBQ regions:
- Kansas City – A variety of beef and pork cuts are slow cooked with a tomato and molasses-based sauce.
- Carolina – Slow-roasted pork is cooked with a sauce with a vinegar and ketchup base combination.
- Memphis – Dry rub pork is cooked low and slow absorbing the smokey, BBQ flavors.
- Texas – Beef is slow-cooked in smoker grills and topped a with smoky, dry rub.
Everyone has their own homemade BBQ recipe. However, many recipes include the same ingredients. Ketchup, mustard and Worcestershire, brown sugar, soy and molasses are common ingredients in BBQ sauce. A combination onion, smoked paprika, ground cumin, crushed red pepper and turmeric are often found in the best dry rub recipes. Perfecting your own sauce or rub by experimenting
When it comes to completing a delicious BBQ, the sides you serve are just as important. Potatoes and baked beans with bacon are considered staples of barbecue flavors. Ideally, a good coleslaw will pair well with a shredded bbq pork and make the perfect sandwich. However, a creamy macaroni and cheese dish is a perfect combination with dry or wet BBQ. Corn on the cob is another favorite side, many grilling it directly with husk on then removing it before eating. Obviously, no barbeque meal would be complete if you didn’t add a slice of watermelon for a light, cook dessert after a big meal.

New Orleans Uncovered
A simple slice of life in New Orleans captured by Arnold Genthe in 1923. This stretch of Royal Street is located between Governor Nicholls and Barracks Streets and starts at the bottom left at 1211 Royal and continues lakeward to Barracks.
A closer look finds a man painting the exterior of a house precariously perched atop a ladder on the third floor of the house just to the left of center. At street level toward the right there is another ladder placed against the façade of 1227 Royal and a lady walking past it is careful to be on the right side. The mule-drawn ice wagon at the bottom center features a colorful hat on the mule.
Prussian-born Genthe emigrated to America in 1895 to San Francisco and is best known for his photographs of the 1906 earthquake. He moved to New York City in 1911 and remained there until his death in 1942. He frequently visited New Orleans during the 1920s and assembled a sizeable body of work here.

Allegra, James Bartelle, and Alex Martinez Wallace, and inspired by the amphitheater’s waterfront location, will blend story with shanties of the high seas as we follow the pirate crew of Long John Silver as they travel to Skull Island to discover the location of Captain Flint’s buried treasure. This 21st century adaptation is sure to enamor boys, girls, young, and old, and is certain bring out the inner-pirate in every New Orleanian.

JPAS presents Ira Levin's murder mystery filled with plot twists, humor and much more than meets the eye.
Comfortably ensconced in his charming Connecticut home, Sidney Bruhl, a successful writer of Broadway thrillers, is struggling to overcome a dry spell which has resulted in a string of failures and a shortage of funds. A possible break in his fortunes occurs when he receives a script from a student in the seminar he has been conducting at a nearby college—a thriller that Sidney recognizes immediately as a potential Broadway smash. Sidney’s plan, devised with his wife’s help, is to offer collaboration to the student for co-credit. Or is it? "Deathtrap" provides twists and turns of devilish cleverness, and offers hilariously sudden shocks in such abundance that audiences will be spellbound until the very last moment.

Dew Drop Inn Announces Spring Concert Series
In Mandeville
|
The historic Dew Drop Jazz & Social Hall in Mandeville, built in 1895, is back this spring with a full season of concerts presenting traditional jazz and blues, funky swamp pop and Cajun music—with a few surprises along the way. For the six Saturday night evening concerts a variety of genres will be showcased by some of the region’s most notable musicians.
May 21 | Two unique bands will perform one set each, starting with Doucet Frères, featuring the famed brother duo of Michael and David Doucet, of the Grammy-Award winning Cajun band, BeauSoleil. The Doucet family name is known for making Cajun music a popular genre within the world music scene. The second set will showcase Michael Doucet’s new Cajun dance band, Lâcher Prise Trio, with Doucet on fiddle, and both Sarah Quintana and Chad Viator on guitar. The name Lâcher Prise means to “let go” and blends Cajun, swamp soul, and Gypsy tunes that celebrate love and the simple joys of having a good time.
Presented by the Friends of the Dew Drop, these Saturday evening concerts will run from 6:30 to 9:00p.m. and will feature home-cooked food for purchase provided by the Ladies of First Free Mission Baptist Church, located next door. Soft drinks, water, beer and wine will be available for purchase. Admission for each concert is $10 cash per adult. Students and children may attend free of charge. No outside food, drinks or pets are allowed and lawn chairs may be used outside the hall on the grounds.
The history of the Dew Drop Inn begins in 1885 when a group of civic-minded African American residents of the Mandeville, led by the late Olivia Eunio, created the Dew Drop Social and Benevolent Association. A decade later, in 1895, the organization laid a cornerstone and constructed a small wooden building two and one-half blocks from Lake Pontchartrain on Lamarque Street.
The Association, like many created among African American residents following the Civil War, had chiefly benevolent goals—to care for the sick, provide help with funeral arrangements, food & temporary housing—all during a time when Black residents could not obtain various types of insurance. Today, known as one of the oldest, unaltered rural jazz halls in the U.S. the not-for-profit organization, Friends of the Dew Drop, schedules and manages the hall’s performances and educational activities.
