MEMORIAL DAY
Each year in the United States, Americans observe the Federal holiday, Memorial Day, the last Monday in May. It honors and remembers all men and women who have died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. Memorial Day is also a day to remember all loved ones who have passed away.

Traditionally on Memorial Day, the flag of the United States of America is raised briskly to the top of the staff then solemnly lowered to the half-staff position where it remains until noon. At noon, it is then raised to full-staff for the remainder of the day.
When the flag is at half-staff, the position is in remembrance of the more than one million men and women who gave their lives for their country. Raising the flag at noon signifies the nation lives, that the country is resolved not to let their sacrifice be in vain but to rise up in their honor and continue to fight for liberty and justice for all.
In the United States, Memorial Day also traditionally marks the beginning of summer.

What was Memorial Day originally known as?
The correct answer is Decoration Day.
Since the super-regional format was created in 1999, LSU has never advanced to the World Series going on the road for regional play.
The Tigers will find out which post-season regional they travel to play in on Monday morning when the NCAA selection show airs and the tournament field of 64 teams is announced.
LSU joins three other Louisiana schools who've qualified for the NCAA tournament.
Southeastern Louisiana won the Southland Conference Tournament and the automatic-berth into the playoffs. Louisiana Tech beat Texas-San Antonio to claim the Conference USA title and the UL-Lafayette Ragin Cajuns won the Sun Belt Tournament championship to advance.
Like the LSU Tigers, the Lions, Bulldogs and Cajuns will find out who they play and where on Monday morning.

We've all heard the old saying that oysters should not be consumed in months that don’t contain the letter “r” in their names. Is there truth to that? Check out our article for the facts

Oysters are high in zinc, with six medium-sized ones providing 32 milligrams or 291% of the daily value, according to Healthline.com. Studies have shown that zinc is important to testosterone production in males, which would lend credence to the aphrodisiac theory, but it isn’t fully known if that is the actual reason for the long-held belief.
Another oyster claim is that they are alive until shucked. Megan La Peyre, a researcher in the LSU AgCenter School of Renewable Natural Resources, said this isn’t quite accurate.
“They are alive even after they are shucked,” she said. “If you eat them immediately after shucking, you are eating them live. And if you look carefully, you can see their heartbeat.”
One adage that many agree on is that oysters should not be consumed in months that don’t contain the letter “r” in their names. This idea likely dates back to 1599 when it appeared in an English cookbook, according to a New York Times article written in 2017 by science journalist Joanna Klein. There is merit to this, said AgCenter and Louisiana Sea Grant food safety specialist Evelyn Watts.
“We know that vibrio is more prevalent in warmer months,” Watts said. “But the fact is vibrio can occur at any time of the year, and eating raw or undercooked oysters always presents a foodborne risk.”
According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, vibrio is bacteria that lives in coastal waters and is present in higher concentrations between May and October when the water is warmer. It causes vibriosis, which the CDC estimates causes 80,000 illnesses and 100 deaths in the United States annually.
In addition to the greater risk of contracting vibrio, oysters are simply less appetizing in warmer months, which is when they spawn, La Peyre said.
“Oysters reproduce in the warmer months, so they are full of gametes,” she said, “while in the winter, they are ‘fat’ and growing and tend to be sweeter.”
Former oyster fisherman and current soft-shell crab producer Daniel Edgar, of Franklin, said refrigeration techniques have aided in oysters being consumed year-round in many coastal regions, where they don’t have to travel as far to market.
“Way back when, oyster harvesters didn’t have to keep a cooler on their boat,” Edgar said. “Today, any boat that spends the night offshore or the boats that fish far away, like south of Marsh Island, have to keep one on board. This was legislated to better protect the consumer.”
Edgar also said farm-raised oysters are easier to produce now than perhaps ever before with the right setup. Essentially all that is needed is enough brackish water and room to grow.
“There’s a guy in Grand Isle that sells oyster spats,” he said. “If you put 500 in a box when they’re young, in about a month they won’t fit in that box anymore, so you’ll have to divide them up into boxes of 250 and so on.”
Edgar and today’s oyster fishermen owe a lot to those credited with developing the commercial oyster industry in Louisiana: Croatian immigrants. LSU English professor Carolyn Ware, who specializes in folklife, wrote in Folklife in Louisiana about the history of Croatians in the state.
“Many of Louisiana’s Croatian men continue to fish oysters, and some are third- or fourth-generation oystermen,” Ware wrote. “Sons often start fishing with fathers on weekends and summers as children. As adults, they frequently still fish on the acres once leased by their fathers.”
Things have changed a great deal economically from those early days. AgCenter and Louisiana Sea Grant economist Rex Caffey said oysters are the third-most lucrative seafood crop in the state, behind only shrimp and menhaden, which generally aren’t fit for human consumption and are used primarily for fertilizer, animal food and as bait for blue crab.
“Recently, oysters and crabs have switched places from year to year in terms of total value,” Caffey said. “But in 2018, nearly $76 million worth of Gulf oysters were harvested in the state.”

Queen Nefertari’s Egypt
New Orleans Museum of Art

Public

The queen is coming.  "Queen Nefertari's Egypt" is on view through July 17, 2022, at NOMA.

Queen Nefertari, the royal wife of Pharaoh Ramesses II (reigned 1279–13 BCE), is linked to some of the most magnificent monuments of ancient Egypt. Appearing in sculpture and images, and identified in inscriptions on buildings associated with Ramesses II, she is also known through a complete temple consecrated to her in Abu Simbel, beside the one dedicated to her husband. Her tomb is the largest and most richly decorated in the Valley of the Queens. It was discovered in the early 20th century by a team of archaeologists led by Ernesto Schiaparelli, then director of the Museo Egizio in Turin.
The team’s discoveries and the role of Nefertari and other powerful women in ancient Egypt are brought to life through the 230 exceptional objects in this exhibition, drawn from the collection of the Museo Egizio. These include statues, jewelry, vases, papyrus, steles, wooden coffins, and stone sarcophagi, as well as tools and various items of daily life from the artisan village of Deir-el-Medina, home to those who created the royal tombs. These astonishing treasures showcase the legacy of the royal wives, sisters, daughters, and mothers of pharaohs, and sometimes even pharaohs themselves, as well as the artists who contributed to the creation of these stunning objects.
__
Queen Nefertari’s Egypt is organized by the Museo Egizio, Turin, and StArt, in collaboration with the New Orleans Museum of Art. The presentation in New Orleans is made possible by the generous support of the Eugenie and Joseph Jones Family Foundation and the Consulate General of Italy in Houston

COVID CONCERNS: A gradual but persistent rise in coronavirus cases in Louisiana is beginning to raise concerns among residents and prompt  new warnings from health officials in New Orleans. The increases are not yet of the magnitude seen in the five prior waves of the pandemic, when sudden and rapid spread of the virus sent case counts and hospitalizations rocketing higher. Instead, the state is now seeing counts grow slowly over the course of weeks, as highly infectious strains of the omicron variant spread out across the state.

NATIONAL MINT JULEP DAY | MAY 30
National Mint Julep Day on May 30th each year sets up a refreshing toast to summer. Each year, people around the country gather for a glass of mint julep! This refreshing southern classic is a traditional drink of the Kentucky Derby.

A classic mint julep is made with a mint leaf, bourbon, sugar, and water. In the Southern states, where mint julep is more associated with the cuisine, spearmint is the mint of choice. Preparation of the drink may vary from one bartender to another.
  • Some believe the mint julep originated in the southern United States sometime during the 18th century.
  • The term “julep” is generally defined as a sweet drink, particularly one used as a vehicle for medicine.
  • During the 19th century, Americans also enjoyed a gin-based julep.
  • Each year, Churchill Downs serves almost 120,000 mint juleps over the two-day period of the Kentucky Oaks and the Kentucky Derby.
  • May 2008 – Churchill Downs unveiled the world’s largest mint julep glass (6-foot tall).

The two-story building on the corner of North Rampart and Conti Streets has been the home of several automobile related companies over the years. In 1919 it was the home of the Liberty Auto Company and was followed in rather short order by the Eaton – McDiarmid Group, and then Cazayoux Motors.
Starting in 1929 the site served as the Union Bus Station for the Teche Transfer Company, a Greyhound bus line. For a brief time in the early 1940s it was the reclaimed furniture warehouse for Maison Blanche, before returning to commerce in the automotive industry as Howard Motors in 1945 selling DeSoto and Plymouth cars. Not long thereafter, when this photograph was taken, the building was R.E. Walker Used Cars. In the 1950s it was Specialty Motors selling Renaults and other imports, and in the 1960s it was Trader Joe Paretti. In 1969 it became one of the four locations of the Maison Blanche Tire Centers.
Since the 1980s it has been the home of the St. Jude Community Center.

New Orleans is home to one of the greatest coffee cultures in the world. With the port of New Orleans providing access to coffee beans grown all over the world, the coffee merchants and roasters of New Orleans have become famous. The Merchants Coffee Company produced several brands of coffee, most notably Union Coffee and Chicory from their building at 201 Tchoupitoulas Street. Perhaps inspired by the old Union Coffee House on Old Levee and Madison Streets on the New Orleans waterfront in the 1840s, at the dawn of the 20th century Ben C. Casanas was nonetheless proud to advertise that the Merchants Coffee Company only employed union labor for their products.
Their popular advertisements trumpeted “How to Prevent Divorce” by suggesting that wives serve their husbands a cup of Union Coffee to “drive away the grumps.
Since 1957 it has been part of the French Market family of coffees and is still marketed under the Union Coffee and Chicory label. The five-story building at 201 Tchoupitoulas Street on the corner of Common Street, shown here in 1958, was redeveloped as a warehouse in the early 1960s, then as an office building before finally becoming condominium residences in 2000. The old Atlas Esso Garage may be seen at 213 Tchoupitoulas on the far left of the image.

Doors at 7pm, Show at 8pm
Whether seen on HBO’s Treme or at their legendary Tuesday night gig at The Maple Leaf, Grammy-winning Rebirth Brass Band is a true New Orleans institution. Formed in 1983 by the Frazier brothers, the band has evolved from playing the streets of the French Quarter to playing festivals and stages all over the world. While committed to upholding the tradition of brass bands, they’ve also extended themselves into the realms of funk and hip-hop to create their signature sound. “Rebirth can be precise whenever it wants to,” says The New York Times, “but it’s more like a party than a machine. It’s a working model of the New Orleans musical ethos: as long as everybody knows what they’re doing, anyone can cut loose.” In the wake of the sometimes- stringent competition amongst New Orleans brass bands, Rebirth is the undisputed leader of the pack, and they show no signs of slowing down

Local Whistling Champ Terry Rappold

Talks about an Under-rated Form of Music

METAIRIE, LA – Terry Rappold, a two-time whistling International Grand Champion, will speak about whistling and whistling competitions at two Jefferson Parish Libraries: 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 9, at the North Kenner Library, 630 Esplanade, Kenner, and 7 p.m., Thursday, June 16, at the Belle Terre Library, 5550 Belle Terre Road, Marrero.

This presentation is free of charge and is open to the public. Registration is not required.

Rappold will discuss whistling as a form of communication as well as its use in sport. He will discuss superstitions associated with whistling. He will whistle and he will help others who have “whistling issues.”

He has a theory about whistling. “Whistling, like all forms of music, is an expression of the soul. However, whistling does not have the advantage of utilizing words to convey the message or express emotion. Performers who whistle have to dig deep within themselves to bring forth the emotion the song is portraying. As such, whistling as an art is a deep expression of the soul which resonates with the audience. It is, in general, an uplifting emotional experience to the listener.”

Rappold has won almost two dozen whistling awards in international competitions, including being named Grand Champion, Men’s Division, in 2007 and 2011 at the International Whistlers Convention. His CD, “WhiSOULing,” was produced in 2007. He has appeared on numerous news programs, including CBS News Sunday with Charles Osgood in 2003.

Terry Rappold and his jazz group perform at festivals, community concerts, weddings, sporting events, funding-raising events, parties, piano bars, nightclubs, and TV-radio commercials. During the day, Rappold serves as chief executive officer for Premier Source Inc., Premier Hospitality Solutions, and Premier Stone Services.

The Kiwanis Club of Greater Covington will be out in full force, selling hamburgers, hot dogs, beverages, and snacks to raise funds for its many charitable efforts. “ Our block party brings people from across a Tri-Parish area, to show and see classic cars.
