NATIONAL SLEEPOVER DAY
On May 9th, National Sleepover Day provides an opportunity once again for girls to confide in their friends in a way that can be inspiring, therapeutic, and confidence-building. Sleepovers play an important role in both friendships and memory-making. It’s a time when women and girls share stories and realize the more we’re different, the more we’re alike.
A sleepover offers more than just movies and gossip. It’s an opportunity to be among friends and be yourself. Let your hair down or put it up. Tell hair-raising stories and laugh until you cry or cry until you laugh. Either way, you’ll be among friends, and everyone there thinks you’re smart and beautiful, strong, and courageous, too. And if they don’t. Well, they soon will because at sleepovers, we tend to bare our souls.

- Graduation rate

- School endowment
Data are collected from third party sources including the US Dept of Education’s College Scorecard and IPEDS.

Queen Nefertari’s Egypt
New Orleans Museum of Art
|
Public
The queen is coming. "Queen Nefertari's Egypt" is on view through July 17, 2022, at NOMA.
Queen Nefertari, the royal wife of Pharaoh Ramesses II (reigned 1279–13 BCE), is linked to some of the most magnificent monuments of ancient Egypt. Appearing in sculpture and images, and identified in inscriptions on buildings associated with Ramesses II, she is also known through a complete temple consecrated to her in Abu Simbel, beside the one dedicated to her husband. Her tomb is the largest and most richly decorated in the Valley of the Queens. It was discovered in the early 20th century by a team of archaeologists led by Ernesto Schiaparelli, then director of the Museo Egizio in Turin.
The team’s discoveries and the role of Nefertari and other powerful women in ancient Egypt are brought to life through the 230 exceptional objects in this exhibition, drawn from the collection of the Museo Egizio. These include statues, jewelry, vases, papyrus, steles, wooden coffins, and stone sarcophagi, as well as tools and various items of daily life from the artisan village of Deir-el-Medina, home to those who created the royal tombs. These astonishing treasures showcase the legacy of the royal wives, sisters, daughters, and mothers of pharaohs, and sometimes even pharaohs themselves, as well as the artists who contributed to the creation of these stunning objects.
__
Queen Nefertari’s Egypt is organized by the Museo Egizio, Turin, and StArt, in collaboration with the New Orleans Museum of Art. The presentation in New Orleans is made possible by the generous support of the Eugenie and Joseph Jones Family Foundation and the Consulate General of Italy in Houston

Alabama Baseball Thrashed by No. 19 LSU, 12-3
The Crimson Tide bats recorded just eight hits and drew zero walks compared to 15 hits and five walks by Tigers hitters.
Despite the Tigers playing without one of their top batters in Jacob Berry for the second day in a row, LSU had no problem taking the series with a 12-3 victory on Sunday at Sewell-Thomas Stadium off the bats of Crews and familiar faces in the lineup returning from injury.

NATIONAL MOSCATO DAY
On May 9th, raise your glass and toast National Moscato Day. Moscato, or Muscat in Italian, is one of the oldest known varieties of grapes grown in the world.
The Moscato grape ranges in color from white to almost black. Its flavor varies, too, from sweet to dry. Winemakers use this quite versatile grape to make everything from sparkling and dessert wines to dry and floral wines. Where one Moscato may pair well with a steak, another will go well with fresh fruit and a sharp cheese plate.
In February of 2012, it was reported that Moscato wine became the third most popular white wine consumed within the United States.

|
NATIONAL BUTTERSCOTCH BROWNIE DAY
National Butterscotch Brownie Day on May 9th each year recognizes a delicious treat. Butterscotch Brownies, also known as Blondies or Brookies (brownie + cookie) made their debut before chocolate brownies. Recipes date back to the 19th century and are made up of flour, brown sugar, butter, eggs, baking powder, and vanilla. Walnuts, pecans, or butterscotch chips are sometimes added to the brownies.
These brownies taste delicious with a dollop of ice cream on top. They also make terrific trifles when cut up into chunks and layered with puddings or mousse, and whipped cream. Make them for bake sales or tasty little gifts. No matter what excuse you use to make them, be sure to share them!

Derby Gisclair
The 1868 New Orleans City Directory listed C. Edmondson as a “translator of French, Spanish, and German.” She also found time to compose a song dedicated to the New Orleans & Carrollton Rail Road Company titled “Car Song” illustrated below. The seven verses recall the conversion from owning a carriage to taking the streetcar and the joys of public transportation.
The illustration depicts two mule-drawn streetcars on Canal Street on the corner of Dauphine Street. We can pinpoint the location from the shops in the background. From left-to-right (in the old street numbering system) we have O. Lopez Confectionary at 169 Canal Street, then A.E. Blackman who was a music publisher and piano manufacturer located at 167 Canal Street. then J. Herber’s drugs and medicine shop at 165 Canal Street, followed by Theo. Danziger & Sons (Theodore, Isidore, and David) who sold dry goods from their store in the middle of the block at 163 Canal Street.
The tall dark building is D. H. Holmes.

The old carousel building in Audubon Park began as the Horticultural Hall built in 1884 for the World Industrial & Cotton Centennial Exposition. The site of the exposition was converted into Audubon Park and the carousel building was one of the last remaining structures until it was destroyed by the great hurricane of September 29, 1915.
The carousel was rebuilt in a new facility and remained in operation until 1967.

JPAS presents Ira Levin's murder mystery filled with plot twists, humor and much more than meets the eye.
Comfortably ensconced in his charming Connecticut home, Sidney Bruhl, a successful writer of Broadway thrillers, is struggling to overcome a dry spell which has resulted in a string of failures and a shortage of funds. A possible break in his fortunes occurs when he receives a script from a student in the seminar he has been conducting at a nearby college—a thriller that Sidney recognizes immediately as a potential Broadway smash. Sidney’s plan, devised with his wife’s help, is to offer collaboration to the student for co-credit. Or is it? "Deathtrap" provides twists and turns of devilish cleverness, and offers hilariously sudden shocks in such abundance that audiences will be spellbound until the very last moment.

Dew Drop Inn Announces Spring Concert Series
In Mandeville
|
The historic Dew Drop Jazz & Social Hall in Mandeville, built in 1895, is back this spring with a full season of concerts presenting traditional jazz and blues, funky swamp pop and Cajun music—with a few surprises along the way. For the six Saturday night evening concerts a variety of genres will be showcased by some of the region’s most notable musicians.
April 16 | Gregg Stafford & His Jazz Hounds, led by renowned Preservation Hall musician and educator Gregg Stafford, will present a night deeply steeped in traditional New Orleans jazz.
May 14 | The unique jazz folk stylings define Sarah Quintana & Friends. A singer-songwriter from New Orleans with a background rich in jazz, folk and popular music, Quintana is a devoted guitarist with a voice that is instantly recognizable. Her versatility has led her from singing on the streets of Provence with a traveling circus to the stages of the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival and even New York’s Lincoln Center with a swing band.
May 21 | Two unique bands will perform one set each, starting with Doucet Frères, featuring the famed brother duo of Michael and David Doucet, of the Grammy-Award winning Cajun band, BeauSoleil. The Doucet family name is known for making Cajun music a popular genre within the world music scene. The second set will showcase Michael Doucet’s new Cajun dance band, Lâcher Prise Trio, with Doucet on fiddle, and both Sarah Quintana and Chad Viator on guitar. The name Lâcher Prise means to “let go” and blends Cajun, swamp soul, and Gypsy tunes that celebrate love and the simple joys of having a good time.
Presented by the Friends of the Dew Drop, these six Saturday evening concerts will run from 6:30 to 9:00p.m. and will feature home-cooked food for purchase provided by the Ladies of First Free Mission Baptist Church, located next door. Soft drinks, water, beer and wine will be available for purchase. Admission for each concert is $10 cash per adult. Students and children may attend free of charge. No outside food, drinks or pets are allowed and lawn chairs may be used outside the hall on the grounds.
The history of the Dew Drop Inn begins in 1885 when a group of civic-minded African American residents of the Mandeville, led by the late Olivia Eunio, created the Dew Drop Social and Benevolent Association. A decade later, in 1895, the organization laid a cornerstone and constructed a small wooden building two and one-half blocks from Lake Pontchartrain on Lamarque Street.
The Association, like many created among African American residents following the Civil War, had chiefly benevolent goals—to care for the sick, provide help with funeral arrangements, food & temporary housing—all during a time when Black residents could not obtain various types of insurance. Today, known as one of the oldest, unaltered rural jazz halls in the U.S. the not-for-profit organization, Friends of the Dew Drop, schedules and manages the hall’s performances and educational activities.

JAZZ'N THE VINES MAY LINE-UP
THE TIN MEN
SATURDAY 5/14
We could not be more excited about our next Wild Bush Jazz'n the Vines featuring THE TIN MEN, SATURDAY, MAY 14TH!
The Tin Men are easily the band we (Monica and Neil) have seen live the most! You would be hard pressed to find a more charming
trio of musicians anywhere in the country. The Tin Men combine the unlikely instrumentation of sousaphone, washboard, and guitar to form one of New Orleans’ most original and entertaining groups. Respected performers on their individual instruments, percussionist/vocalist Washboard Chaz, Sousaphonist Matt Perrine and guitarist/vocalist Alex McMurray explore a truly eclectic array of North American Pop music from jug band to swing jazz to New Orleans R&B to Motown to Easy Listening to Heavy Metal and beyond. Through it all they put their own zany spin on the material and make it their own. Throw in a generous dose of McMurray’s own songs, the precocious wit of Perrine’s sousaphone and Washboard Chaz’s seemingly boundless charm and the result is what has been described as "One of the most interesting bands to emerge from New Orleans in years” (Adam Cohen—Offbeat Magazine)
