Saints top Buccaneers
36-27
P.J. Williams intercepted Tom Brady and returned it 40 yards for a touchdown with 1:24 left, helping New Orleans seal a dramatic but potentially costly 36-27 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday during which Saints quarterback Jameis Winston injured his left knee.
Winston was injured during a scramble early in the second quarter when he was pulled down from behind by former LSU star Devin White, who was flagged for a horse collar tackle.
“I think it’s significant,” coach Sean Payton said. “He felt something and is on crutches right now. ...
Backup Trevor Siemian took over for Winston and completed 16 of 29 throws for 159 yards and a touchdown without a turnover, leading the Saints on five scoring drives that produced two touchdowns and three field goals.

Sports betting licenses issued to Louisiana casinos
|
Four state-licensed casinos in Louisiana were able to kick off sports betting at their locations Sunday, after winning approval for their licensing applications from state gambling regulators.
Louisiana Gaming Control Board Chairman Ronnie Johns told The Advertiser the licenses are for Harrah’s New Orleans, L’Auberge Casino in Baton Rouge, Horseshoe Casino in Bossier City and Boomtown Casino in Harvey. Wagering could begin Sunday, though L’Auberge and Boomtown planned to open their sportsbooks Monday.
Former New Orleans Saints quarterback Bobby Hebert placed the first bet Sunday inside Harrah’s New Orleans, according to The Times-Picayune/The New Orleans Advocate. Hebert placed a ceremonial wager on his old team to cover the 4.5-point spread against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
“This is an exciting day for the state,” Johns said Friday. “There’s been tremendous interest. We’ve had calls every day for months asking about the timing.”
Voters in 55 parishes legalized sports betting on live-action games. Paragon Casino Resort in Marksville started offering sports betting at its tribal casino on Oct. 6, but the Gaming Control Board took longer to license the first state-regulated sports betting sites.
Johns said the State Police review of applications was briefly disrupted by Hurricane Ida because troopers were deployed for response work. Johns said he will issue more licenses as soon as he gets more approvals from the State Police.
The first sports betting options will be at on-site sports books inside casinos and racetracks. Johns said it will likely be early 2022 before the casinos begin offering mobile online betting options. The Advertiser reports that’s the same timeline expected for bars and restaurants to secure sports betting kiosks through the Louisiana Lottery Corp.

The mass is a long-standing tradition at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home and the community at large is invited to participate and honor their loved ones who have passed. Day of the Dead Celebration
Mon, Nov 1
7:00pm
New Orleans Healing Center
2372 St. Claude Ave.,
New Orleans, LA 70117
|
Latin celebration of "life in the time of death," with an interfaith altar installations.
In its 39th year, La Source Ancienne Ounfo , a New Orleans based Vodou society, in partnership with the New Orleans Healing Center, will celebrate the Day of the Dead/Fet Gede with a Vodou ceremony to invoke the Gede. It is soothing and reassuring to know that our Dead are not gone, that we can come together in community to honor and visit with them. In return, our memory of the Dead keeps their spirits alive and present.
The Mexican Days of the Dead are the days at the end of October and the beginning of November, when the veil separating the Living and the Dead is most diffuse. The Dead come back to visit the living –children visit first, on Oct 31st, the familial adults on November 1st, and finally the unremembered Dead on November 3rd. It is the time of year when summer has ended and Nature is moving towards wintery death. In Mexico, elaborate displays transform graves into altars and thousands of candles illuminate the path between worlds and give warmth to the returning Dead. Tables are set up with food for the Dead and families picnic on top of graves all night.
The Days of the Dead coincide with “Fet Gede,” the festival for the Gede, a family of Haitian Vodou spirits, who are the patrons of the Dead. The entire month of November is dedicated to his celebrations in Haiti, but he is especially honored with ceremonies during the first days of the month. Death transforms from a manacing and fearful reaper, to a comically grotesque equalizer. Abandon your posturing if you want to avoid being the brunt of his ridicule. Gede is a trickster, who stands at the crossroads between life and death. Cocky, and crude, and often embarrassing, he is patron of death, sex, and regeneration. However, he is also the patron of young children and a great healer, when there is a life or death situation. His colors are purple, black and white and he characteristically wears a top hat and tails or grave-digger’s garb and sunglasses – often with only one lens — either because he sees between worlds or in reference to his “one-eyed snake”.

New Orleans' Classic Memories: 1718 -1964.
The Color Purple was a familiar sight to Katz & Besthoff, Ltd's shoppers. This was the Pharmacist truck - "Only the best" was its logo then which appears to be in the '30s. Of course, it's a b&w photo of its service vehicle that appears to be colorized to go with its favorite color scheme.

Derby Gisclair
This illustration from Chief Thomas O’Connor’s “History of the Fire Department of New Orleans,” is an early engravings of a Newsham Engine used to combat the frequent fires that plagued New Orleans. Developed in the 18th century by British engineers based on an original design by Dutchman Jan Van der Hetden in 1682, the Newsham engine was a moveable fire pump that could be rolled to the site of the fire. They has two single-acting pumps and a water tank, the latter having to be replenished by hand using buckets. This was the first machine that could deliver a continuous stream of water onto a fire.
On the rear of the Newsham Engine we see six men operating the pump by shifting their weight back and forth on a platform-lever to create pressure to force water into the hose, seen at the far right of the cart being trained on the flames. The bucket brigade is seen all around coming from every direction with buckets filled from every possible source in order to replenish the fire engine.
With such primitive equipment it is no wonder that the fires of March 21, 1788 (The Great Fire) and December 8, 1794, were so devastating to the city of New Orleans. The first blaze destroyed 856 of the 1,100 buildings in the city at the time and the second claimed another 212 buildings.

The crowds being as big as they were on All Saints Day, and the entrepreneurial spirit being what it is, it wasn't long before vendors of all kinds began hawking their wares just outside of the cemetery gates, from flowers and cleaning supplies, to toys and candy for the children.
The people I've spoken to who were there in those times said the atmosphere outside of the cemetery was almost festive. But they said that inside the cemetery, families took a tremendous amount of pride in cleaning and decorating their families' tombs, as a way of honoring those who had gone before them.

New Orleans, LA 70125

Duration: 2 hr

Whether seen on HBO’s Treme or at their legendary Tuesday night gig at The Maple Leaf, Grammy-winning Rebirth Brass Band is a true New Orleans institution. Formed in 1983 by the Frazier brothers, the band has evolved from playing the streets of the French Quarter to playing festivals and stages all over the world. While committed to upholding the tradition of brass bands, they’ve also extended themselves into the realms of funk and hip-hop to create their signature sound. “Rebirth can be precise whenever it wants to,” says The New York Times, “but it’s more like a party than a machine. It’s a working model of the New Orleans musical ethos: as long as everybody knows what they’re doing, anyone can cut loose.” In the wake of the sometimes- stringent competition amongst New Orleans brass bands, Rebirth is the undisputed leader of the pack, and they show no signs of slowing down.

Get out your lederhosen, spruce up your dirndls and prepare to eat and drink German style — It’s time for Oktoberfest at Middendorf’s!
We hope you can join us!
- Oktober 28, 2021 - November 11, 2021
- Every Wednesday & Thursday at Middendorf's Manchac and Middendorf's Slidell
- Meals served all day, lunch and dinner, 10:30am-9:00pm (while supplies last)
Middendorf's
Physical Address:, 30160 Hwy 51 S., Akers, LA 70421

This year, Oktoberfest will be every Wednesday and Thursday, November 3, 2021 through November 11, 2021, at Middendorf’s Manchac and Middendorf’s Slidell. This will be our 14th year of Oktoberfest featuring authentic German appetizers, entrees, desserts and beer.
The German expertise comes from Middendorf’s Owner and European Master Chef Horst Pfeifer who is a native of Germany. He grew up in the hamlet of Bächlingen where his family still lives today. The village was established in 950 AD and boasts a grand population of around 150 people.
“It’s an honor to share my German heritage with everyone through the recipes that I grew up with,” said Horst Pfeifer. “I think Louis Middendorf would have been so happy to see Oktoberfest here at the restaurant. Louis was also from Germany, and he founded Middendorf’s back in 1934 with his wife, Josie. It’s funny because Middendorf’s is so widely known for seafood that a lot of people don’t realize that Middendorf is actually a German name.”
During Oktoberfest, there is a different German meal available each week for lunch and dinner, 10:30am-9:00pm (while supplies last). If you dine with us all 6 weeks, you will receive an Oktoberfest Prize! Punch cards must be punched each week and turned in on the final week. Get all the details on the Oktoberfest menu later in this newsletter.
The full regular menu is also available for guests so those who can’t possibly come to Middendorf’s without partaking of our “World Famous Thin Fried Catfish” can rest assured, the catfish and other beloved seafood dishes aren’t going anywhere.
Authentic German music is also in store for Oktoberfest. At Middendorf’s Slidell, the talented Al DiMarco will be back to play the accordion in the evenings, starting at 4:30pm. Over at Middendorf’s Manchac, Heinz Pfeifer (Horst’s brother) should make his triumphant return for the last two weeks of Oktoberfest, November 3-4 and November 10-11 (as long as the international travel rules don’t change again). Heinz will fly-in from Germany to entertain guests with his accordion and conversation.
Catch all the authentic German food, music and fun during Oktoberfest at Middendorf’s. It’s every Wednesday and Thursday at Middendorf’s Manchac and Middendorf’s Slidell, Oktober 6, 2021 through November 11, 2021.

LIVE MUSIC FROM THE BRASS-A-HOLICS at the Jazz Playhouse
Since 2010, the Brass-A-Holics have been taking their unique sound around the world. Steeped in the deep musical culture of New Orleans, the band brings a heavy dose of go-go funk to the New Orleans brass sound. In a blending of musical cultures stemming from cities separated by more than a thousand miles, a Brass-a-Holics live show takes the New Orleans brass band culture and infuses it with the electricity of Washington D.C.'s go-go. The resulting sound is both captivating and unique. The band consists of core New Orleans brass elements- trumpet, trombone, saxophone- and adds a full drum set, percussion, keyboard, bass and electric guitar, giving the band limitless options to explore new sonic territory.

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO
TIPS FOR SURVIVING THE NEW ORLEANS NIGHTMARE
-
Review our Scary Safe guidelines to keep your friends, yourself, and our employees protected.
-
Make sure to purchase a Fast Pass or Skip the Line ticket. These tickets grant you entry into our expedited queues, so you will spend less time waiting in line! A limited number are sold each night so get yours today.
- Outside, take as many photos as you would like with monsters and other entertainers - feel free to share them on social media! Grab a snack and drink. While inside, no food, drinks, bottles, recording devices, flash photography or flashlights are allowed.
- No prop or handheld items are allowed inside. If you come in costume, please leave your accessories in your car.
- Bring a clear bag! To limit touching of personal items, only clear bags not exceeding 4.5”x6.5” will be allowed.
- Mistreating any New Orleans Nightmare performer will result in you being sent home.
- Wearing heels or flip flops is discouraged as they are the shoes we find the most in our lost and found.
PLAN AHEAD
GET YOUR TICKETS IN ADVANCE
- If you purchase your ticket in advance you will skip the Box Office all together.
-
On peak nights we highly recommend you purchase a Fast Pass or Skip the Line ticket as this will greatly reduce your wait in line or eliminate it altogether.
WHAT TO EXPECT
- Upon arriving at the New Orleans Nightmare Haunted House, if you have already purchased your tickets, proceed directly through security, and then to your designated entrance - General Admission, Fast Pass, or Skip the Line. There is no need to exchange your print-at-home-ticket at the ticket booth; the ticket you printed is your ticket and includes admission to both of the attractions on-site at New Orleans Nightmare Haunted House.
- If you purchased your tickets in advance, expect to feel good about that decision as you pass the line at the box office and proceed to our entry lines.
-
If you purchased a Fast Pass or Skip the Line ticket expect to feel even better as you skip the General Admission line altogether.
- No groups larger than 10 will be sent through together. If you arrived with more than 10 in your party, you will be split into smaller groups to enter.
- Final note: on our busy weekend nights and weekday nights closer to Halloween, we can sell out. To ensure your entry, purchase tickets online in advance; you can do this any time during our season, up to the day you plan to attend. Those of you that are tech savvy can even purchase your tickets online from your smartphone on your way to the haunted house! Your tickets are emailed to you immediately, you can pull them up on your smartphone screen and we can scan them at the entrance right on your phone. If you have an online ticket in hand, you will get in that night. However, in the event of a sellout night, our on-site box office will close early. Don't worry though, we stay until thelast ticketed patron in line is through both haunted houses!

The fact that The Mortuary Haunted Mansion sits next to a cemetery and was once a funeral home is already scary enough. Now, add creepy creatures, and you really have a frightening scene.
This year, the haunted house explores a new theme called “Inferno,” with the website describing the plot as “a supernatural event leading to the two men’s disappearance over New Orleans.”
