In 2010, GNO, Inc. and partners from the State and City helped bring Blade Dynamics from England to NASA Michoud in New Orleans East, to begin the design, testing and manufacture of large wind-turbine blades. We all saw Blade Dynamics as the seed of a new clean energy industry in Louisiana, which would leverage our historical world-class expertise in other forms of energy.
At the same time, other Louisiana oil and gas companies have been involved in the manufacture and servicing of the first offshore windmill farm in America, off the coast of Rhode Island. Lafayette-based Aries Marine Corp. and Galliano-based Falcon Global LLC are liftboat operators who helped build the project. Metairie-based Keystone Engineering provided design assistance and Houma-based Gulf Island Fabrication built foundation jackets and piling. And Edison Chouest Offshore has announced the execution of a long-term charter agreement for the provision of the first-ever U.S. flagged Jones Act compliant Service Operations Vessel (SOV) for wind farms.
To capture and optimize the overall wind opportunity, in 2019 GNO, Inc. launched the GNOwind Alliance. Since then, the coalition has grown to over 130 members representing private, public, and academic organizations driving targeted initiatives around port infrastructure, industry attraction, workforce development, policy, and innovation. The GNOwind Alliance worked closely with Louisiana Economic Development and Governor Edwards’ team to initiate the regulatory process for future wind leases in the Gulf. The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management is fielding interest from wind developers and is aiming to receive initial bids by the end of 2022 – a remarkably fast industry development that would position the Gulf of Mexico as a primary wind energy hub.
If you would like to learn more, NOLA.com / The Advocate has published an extensive series, Winds of Change: How the Gulf of Mexico could be the next offshore wind powerhouse. “In this multi-part series, The Times-Picayune | The New Orleans Advocate takes an in-depth look at the economic and energy-producing potential of offshore wind in the Gulf of Mexico. Our journalists traveled to Rhode Island to explore how several companies in Louisiana's oil and gas industry helped build the country's first offshore wind farm. Now those same companies and more are shifting gears to keep pace with a booming offshore wind industry that could soon put wind turbines off the Louisiana coast.”

THE GARDEN DISTRICT BOOK SHOP HOSTS SPECIAL RECEPTION FOR ANTHONY TUCKER-JONES’ “CHURCHILL, MASTER AND COMMANDER” ON NOVEMBER 29
The Garden District Book Shop is honored to host visiting British author Anthony Tucker-Jones for an intimate reception and book signing of his latest work, “Churchill, Master and Commander” on November 29. Tucker-Jones is visiting New Orleans as a guest of The Churchill Society of New Orleans to release his latest work on the eve of what would have been Churchill’s 147th birthday. The reception will be the kick-off event to his visit and open to members and non-society members alike.
In this fascinating new book, Tucker-Jones explores the record of Winston Churchill as a military commander, assessing how the military experiences of his formative years shaped him for the difficult military decisions he took in office. This book assesses his choices in some of the most controversial and high-profile campaigns of World War II, and how in high office his decision making was both right and wrong.
After a career in the British intelligence community, Anthony Tucker-Jones established himself as a highly successful military historian and defence writer. For many years Tucker-Jones was the terrorism and security correspondent for intersec - The Journal of International Security and freelanced for Channel 4 News. He is also the author of over 50 books, many of which have been translated into foreign languages, and has numerous other print and online works.
The event will take place at a private home and begin at 6:00 PM. Guests will enjoy cocktails and light bites during the welcome reception and then sit down for an engaging discussion led by Tucker-Jones. He will then personalize books for guests.
Tickets are available on Eventbrite for $45 and include the price of the book and Eventbrite fees. Couples tickets are also available for $60 and includes entry for two, price of the book and Eventbrite fees. Tickets are limited so interested parties are highly encouraged to purchase tickets in advance of the event date.

CYBER MONDAY
Cyber Monday is the Internet’s answer to Black Friday deals. The official observance takes place the Monday after Thanksgiving.
While Internet-based companies traditionally offered their best holiday shopping on Cyber Monday to compete with Black Friday deals in brick and mortar stores, things have been changing. However, in more recent years, Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals tend to run together. Some start as early as the week of Thanksgiving and run right through the holiday season. But don’t neglect online deals. There may still be savings to be had.
In 2014, Monday after Thanksgiving online sales continued to trend upward with 15.4% increase in revenue from 2013 sales, making it the biggest, online shopping day in history. In 2014 Americans spent an average of $124 per order on Cyber Monday.
Social media also ramps up advertising opportunities, bringing potential shoppers to retailers’ online stores. Cyber shopping is expected to be up again this year with a predicted 3 billion in sales.
Purchases on mobile devices also have increased, adding to the convenience of Cyber shopping for the holidays. No longer do you have to be strapped to your PC or Mac in order to make an online purchase. Purchases can now be made on the train during a morning commute while waiting for a doctor’s appointment or during a lunch break.
Some of the most popular online purchases are likely to be tech items, especially wearable technology as well as traditional small appliances, clothing, gift cards, and digital media.

ELECTRONIC GREETINGS DAY
Observed annually on November 29th, Electronic Greetings Day encourages us to send an electronic greeting. At the same time, the day reminds us of how much things have changed.
The convenience and speed of sending an electronic greeting allow more people than ever to participate in this thoughtful process. We all enjoy it when someone remembers our birthdays, anniversaries, and other important life events. While greeting cards continue to be used, electronic greetings are far more cost-effective and mean equally as much.
Since the advent of the electronic greeting, social media and other messaging systems are expanding our communication methods. We can send a birthday wish through a messaging system and include a favorite memory. If a friend is sick, we show we care by simply clicking a button and sending funny videos. When we miss someone, these days we’re never very far away. We can send them a video message. Wait, we can do better than that. With our smartphone or computer, video chats keep us connected, too. The miracles of technology continue to expand and bring us closer all the time.

Ain't There (dere) No More - New Orleans
Patti Daigle-Brown Educational Insights
From 1946 to 1967, a holiday tradition burned bright at 4506 Canal St., the Centanni home, known for its lavish Christmas decorations. Traffic would slow along the block, as families took their children to see the extravagant display, which included a nativity scene, Santa coming out of the chimney and a life-sized papier-mâché elephant with a movable trunk.

Mule-drawn streetcar passes the Mint, ca. 1880's.
The old U. S. Mint in New Orleans has the distinction of being the only southern branch mint to have survived the Civil War. (The Charlotte, NC and Dahlonega, GA buildings survived, but were never used as mints again after the war.) The old mint in New Orleans, also, has the distinction of being the oldest surviving structure to have served as a U.S. Mint. And it has served the nation in more capacities than any other mint in American history.

Whether seen on HBO’s Treme or at their legendary Tuesday night gig at The Maple Leaf, Grammy-winning Rebirth Brass Band is a true New Orleans institution. Formed in 1983 by the Frazier brothers, the band has evolved from playing the streets of the French Quarter to playing festivals and stages all over the world. While committed to upholding the tradition of brass bands, they’ve also extended themselves into the realms of funk and hip-hop to create their signature sound. “Rebirth can be precise whenever it wants to,” says The New York Times, “but it’s more like a party than a machine. It’s a working model of the New Orleans musical ethos: as long as everybody knows what they’re doing, anyone can cut loose.” In the wake of the sometimes- stringent competition amongst New Orleans brass bands, Rebirth is the undisputed leader of the pack, and they show no signs of slowing down.

These astonishing treasures showcase the legacy of the royal wives, sisters, daughters, and mothers of pharaohs, and sometimes even pharaohs themselves, as well as the female artists who contributed to the creation of these stunning objects.
If you join as a NOMA member, you will have the first chance to reserve tickets for this highly anticipated exhibition! Member pre-sale is happening now through December 15.

2021 Holidays
New Orleans Style
NOLA Gathers for The Holidays Once Again!
|
It's time to return to our favorite holiday traditions, together! Are you ready? FQFI is delighted to announce details regarding the 37th annual Holidays New Orleans Style (HNOS). We could not wait to begin collaborating with our great partners New Orleans & Company this year to curate and showcase all that our city has to offer this season.
Now it's your turn to start curating your very own HNOS experience with your friends and family. Throughout the next seven weeks, Holidays New Orleans Style will offer Réveillon feasts at over 25 of the city’s finest restaurants, nearly 40 special holiday events including the return of live, free concerts produced by FQFI, Papa Noël discounts providing affordable stays in the city’s finest hotels, and a shopping guide to navigate gift-givers through the many options of local shops. The festivities began November 10 with the decoration of Jackson Square and continue through Twelfth Night, January 6, 2022, when the Krewe de Jeanne d’Arc parades through the French Quarter.
Dozens of activities are planned, with plenty of opportunities to enjoy dining, shopping, and culture throughout the season for all ages. Our youngest holiday-goers can enjoy events such as Santa’s Pajama Party, and Holiday Movies on the Mississippi. Welcomed newcomers like WinterJAM include a 12-room exhibition that promises a fun photo experience for all ages with over-the-top holiday decor while cherished traditional special events, like the Algiers Bonfire and Celebration in the Oaks, return to light up the nights. History-lovers will appreciate the new virtual and in-person art and garden tours that turn homes into a winter wonderland. The sounds of the season will fill St. Louis Cathedral and St.Anna’s Episcopal Church during FQFI’s concert series with nine free performances including The Zion Harmonizers, Susan Cowsill, Vivaz and more. As the weeks continue, the excitement builds with opportunities for Hotel Hopping for the Holidays and Big Night New Orleans on New Year’s Eve.
For more than 25 years, FQFI has decorated Jackson Square to brighten the spirits of locals and visitors. This year the Square re-opens to the public and will be illuminated and dressed for the holidays thanks to sponsorship support from French Market Corporation. FQFI welcomes all to safely enjoy the festive atmosphere of Jackson Square and the entire French Quarter neighborhood throughout December.
Free Concerts at St. Louis Cathedral and St. Anna’s Episcopal Church
Holidays New Orleans Style celebrates New Orleans’ rich musical heritage with jazz musicians, gospel choirs, classical ensembles, and others performing the sounds of the season with nearly three weeks of live concerts. While historically held at St. Louis Cathedral and St. Augustine Church, due to continued repairs from Hurricane Ida, the 2021 lineup will take place at the Cathedral and for the first time, St. Anna’s Episcopal Church located in the historical Treme neighborhood (1313 Esplanade Ave.). Concerts at St. Louis Cathedral located in Jackson Square take place at 6pm on December 1, 5, 6 ,13 and 15 with a special Christmas Concert at 5:30pm on December 19. Concerts at St. Anna’s Episcopal Church take place at 4pm on Saturday, December 4, 11 and 18. All concerts are free and open to the public. Start planning your concert schedule here.
Réveillon Dinners
Réveillon, an adaptation of a traditional Creole holiday dining custom, will be celebrated nightly in over 25 restaurants throughout the city. Réveillon menus are offered only once a year, making HNOS the only time guests can enjoy this authentic taste of New Orleans. Menus showcase the feasts of Christmas past with Traditional Réveillon menus at Arnaud’s and The Rib Room; present, and future with Contemporary Réveillon menus that encourage innovative ingredients and techniques at Commander’s Palace and The Bower. As an added treat, those hoping to grab a seat and enjoy the specialty menu during the day, restaurants like Criollo will offer B’Réveillon for Brunch and The Country Club curates a Petite Réveillon menu with smaller portions but all the same unforgettable flavor. Prepare your tastebuds with a full list of menus.
Réveillon on the Rocks
The Réveillon dinner has been celebrated in homes and restaurants all over New Orleans since the 1850s. Local bartenders also capture the spirit of Réveillon, one-sip-at-a-time, with festive cocktails. Beginning December 1st and continuing until the last toast on New Year’s Eve, and at some spots lasting through Twelfth Night (January 6th), bars and restaurants will say “Cheers to the Holiday Season!” Enjoy special crafted cocktails like the sweet and spicy Diable de Noël from Bar Marilou, the holiday spiced, Winter Old Fashion from The Sazerac Restaurant, an Aged Creole Eggnogg from the Rib room and many more. View the full cocktail menu.
Cooking Demonstrations
Holidays New Orleans Style serves up a series of cooking demonstrations from many of New Orleans’ finest chefs. FQFI, New Orleans & Company and WWL-TV team up to bring the “12 Days of Réveillon.” For three weeks, leading up to Christmas Eve, WWL-TV will showcase New Orleans’ great chefs, preparing items from their 2021 Réveillon menus each morning. Restaurants include: Commander’s Palace with Chef Megan “Meg” Bickford, Bourbon House with Chef Devan Giddix, Seaworthy with Chef Steven Green, Addis Nola and more.
Papa Noël Hotel Rates
Holidays New Orleans Style gives the gift of a memorable holiday encounter that can only be experienced in New Orleans. Travelers can take advantage of special offers at more than 40 of the city’s finest hotels and bed and breakfasts that feature attractive nightly Papa Noël discounted rates and luxurious value packages to visitors as their gift of the season. In 2021, new participants to HNOS and the City of New Orleans include: Hotel Fontenot, The Virgin Hotel and The Four Seasons. Whether it’s a staycation or a full vacation, find your next home away from home here.
Shopping Guide
Holidays New Orleans Style is the gift that keeps on giving. Returning for its second year, the guide provides locals and tourists an option to browse local shops online to curate their holiday shopping experiences with one-of-a-kind New Orleans antiques, souvenirs, art, clothing and more. Find the perfect gift for friends and family right here in NOLA.

LIVE MUSIC FROM THE BRASS-A-HOLICS at the Jazz Playhouse
Since 2010, the Brass-A-Holics have been taking their unique sound around the world. Steeped in the deep musical culture of New Orleans, the band brings a heavy dose of go-go funk to the New Orleans brass sound. In a blending of musical cultures stemming from cities separated by more than a thousand miles, a Brass-a-Holics live show takes the New Orleans brass band culture and infuses it with the electricity of Washington D.C.'s go-go. The resulting sound is both captivating and unique.
*Preferred Seating for small parties only. Parties of 8 or more people must inquire via email to cwhitney@sonesta.com to reserve.*
**Special Event valet rate - $5/vehicle. Please provide ticket to event staff for validation. Garage entryways located on both the Bienville and Conti sides of the hotel.

Pontchartrain Astronomy Society and the JPL
Host an Evening of Gazing at the Stars
|
METAIRIE, LA – A night of gazing at the stars will occur at approximately 6 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 8, at the Wagner Library, 6646 Riverside Drive, Metairie. The event will occur outside in a clear area on the east side of the library – away from lights.
This event is free of charge and open to the public. There is plenty of parking available for patrons.
The Pontchartrain Astronomy Society is sponsoring the event. Members will bring telescopes to view the nighttime sky. About six telescopes will be present for viewers, though others may bring their own telescopes.
Targets (depending on sight lines) - Jupiter will be at 38 degrees above the horizon towards the south-southwest with Saturn a little lower at 25 degrees and the moon lower still at 20 degrees. There will be a space station pass-over from the southwest towards the southeast at 6:40 p.m. and it will travel sight-wise between Jupiter and the moon so it should be easy to spot.
In case of bad weather, this event will be rescheduled at another time.
The Pontchartrain Astronomy Society is a non-profit astronomy club with a membership of nearly 130 individuals and families, mainly from the Southeast Louisiana and Southern Mississippi areas. PAS members come from many walks of life and have diverse interests in amateur astronomy. PAS members promote an understanding and appreciation of astronomy in the community, sharing time and telescopes to engage the public with unique astronomy experiences.
For more information regarding this presentation, contact Chris Smith, Manager of Adult Programming for the library, at (504) 889-8143

KING CAKE HUB 2022 LOCATIONS
Mid-City’s Zony Mash (3940 Thalia St) will host the main King Cake Hub location while The Gift Shop at Historic New Orleans Collection will host a pop-up second location
Jennifer Samuels, owner of the King Cake Hub, announced the retail King Cake shop will have two new locations for the 2022 Carnival season. The main King Cake Hub will share space with Zony Mash Beer Project. King Cake Hub will be located in the Broad facing portion of the building at 1464 S. Broad Street in New Orleans. Zony Mash is a brewery with a large creative selection of beers created in house. They also have tasting room with 21 brews on tap and being located in the historic Gem Theater they are also a destination for live entertainment. Zony Mash and King Cake Hub will be collaborating to release a special edition King Cake Stout beer which should be ready in time for King Cake Hub’s Annual Carnival Kickoff Party.
This will be King Cake Hub’s fourth year selling a wide assortment of the best king cakes you have ever and never tasted and will include new king cake offerings from several of our partner bakeries. Brennan’s is back this year with their Traditional and Pink Parade king cakes as well as a yet to be revealed “Special Release” filled king cake which all Coterie members will receive on January 6th. In addition to Brennan’s, NOCCA’s students are back in the kitchen working with Steve Himelfarb and the team from now shuttered Cake Cafe offering their hugely popular Goat Cheese Apple and new this year will be a Gluten and Dairy Free cake. Other returning partners are Caludas’s, Cannata’s, Caywood and Randazzo Bakery, Joe Gambino’s Bakery, Hi-Do Bakery, Bywater Bakery, Breads on Oak, Gracious, Bittersweet, Sugar Love and Big Boys Gooey Cakes will be back for season four!
The 2022 King Cake Coterie is on sale now with exciting new offerings and a discount for early shoppers. The Coterie is a King Cake of the Week Club featuring a different king cake each week. Brennan’s is launching Season 4 and then Cannata’s will be debuting a new Salted Caramel King Cake which is sure to be a hit. NOCCA, Bywater, Gracious, Gambino’s and Caluda’s will also be included. The Coterie makes a great holiday gift. In addition to the early bird discount the first 30 Subscribers will receive one of our amazing t-shirts by Studio Mundi!
This will be a bittersweet year as we mourn the loss of Will Samuels who had the crazy genius idea to bring all your favorite king cakes to one shop. Will’s wife and daughter will proudly and joyously continue the legacy which has delighted and overwhelmed king cake lovers for three years.
King Cake Hub will be open daily from 8:30am until 6:00pm beginning January 6 through Lundi Gras. Delivery will be available through Door Dash
