Help Plant Beautiful Trees in NOLA ~ Treequinox Week
Sustaining Our Urban Landscape (SOUL) is an environmental non-profit dedicated to reducing stormwater runoff, pollution, air temperatures, and subsidence and improving community health through the reforestation of New Orleans. SOUL is reforesting New Orleans, one community at a time.
They are kicking off tree-planting season with Treequinox Week! From September 21st – 25th, they are recruiting community support to plant 1,500 native, water-loving trees throughout New Orleans during the upcoming season.
1,500 trees. It's a big goal, but they know it's doable if everyone joins in.
With your help, SOUL will be able to purchase a second pickup truck and portable toolshed, which will allow SOUL to more effectively bring trees to every neighborhood in New Orleans!
Spread the word! Up to $10,000 in donations during this campaign will be matched by generous private donors, so you and your friends can double your impact by donating this fall. Your donation will go a long way toward planting a beautiful tree canopy in New Orleans.
Celebrate Treequinox Week!
Get ready to plant!

Obituary for
Dr. Franklin Earl Minyard Jr.

Dr. Franklin Earl Minyard Jr passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on September 15, 2020. He was 91. He was born August 20, 1929 in New Orleans, LA to the late Franklin Earl Minyard and Norma Dugas Minyard. He is preceded in death by his brother Norman Minyard. A graduate of Holy Cross High School in 1947, he lettered in track, basketball and football. He graduated from LSU Medical School in 1955. Working his way through college and medical school, he worked at Pontchartrain Beach as a life guard and in his family grocery business in Dallas, Tx. He served two-years active duty in the U.S. Navy 1957-1959 Captain, USNR and in 1970-1974 served under Adm. Elmo Zumwalt (CNO) as a consultant for the Navy anti-drug campaign. He began his life of public service in the early 1970’s after meeting a Dominican nun, Sr. Mary David when he was asked to help raise money for the Bethlehem House of Bread which was the first drug rehab program for women in New Orleans in Treme. He was elected Coroner of Orleans Parish in 1974, a position he held for 40 years. During his tenure, Dr. Minyard spearheaded several public health campaigns such as protecting children through the “Children Should be Seen and Not Hurt”, numerous anti-drug campaigns, and he petitioned to have a new bridge built to avoid the numerous collisions on the Greater New Orleans Bridge. He proclaimed gun violence as a public health threat when New Orleans reached almost 400 murders in 1994. He loved his music above all and played the trumpet for anyone who would listen including the Pope. He was arrested in 1974 for disturbing the peace in protest for a moratorium on live music in the French Quarter where it was said his music would wake the dead. His arrest lead to his most treasured role which was the creation of the Jazz Roots Foundation in 1975 with support from the Olympia Brass Band. The Jazz Roots raised nearly $1 million for local charities through the annual concert which featured friends such as Rickie Monie of Preservation Hall, The Olympia Brass Band, Chris Owens, Ronnie Kole, Al Hirt, Harry Connick Sr. and Harry Connick Jr. as a young performer. The event was held for close to 29 years but the star of the show was his Rag Time piano playing mother, Norma Minyard. He has served in several capacities for numerous local civic organizations, churches and national associations such as Odyssey House, National Kidney Foundation, Council on Aging, Lighthouse for the Blind, Christian Unity Baptist Church, WRBH Radio, and the Musical Legends Park. A Mardi Gras aficionado, he marched with the Olympia Brass Band and the Pete Fountain Half Fast Marching Club for many years. He served as the First Grand Marshal of the New Orleans Downtown Irish Club in 1977, Tucks in 1991 and Shangri-la in 2006. He is survived by his wife Dr. Nancy Morris Minyard, his three children Michelle Minyard of New Orleans, Marc Minyard (Tammy)of Covington and Dr. Mynette Minyard of Fruita, CO: two step children, Johnny (Michele) Wood of Praireville, LA, Summer (Mark) Patterson of Fairfax Station, VA; nine grandchildren, Matthew Minyard, Alcide Serapin Breaux né Emelie Oppman, JC Wood, Alexa Wood, Barent Foley, Adele Foley, Evelyn Foley, Bryce Patterson, Zoe Patterson; three great grandchildren, Nathanael Minyard, Macee Minyard, Alexandra Richard; two great-great grandchildren, Kambrie Richard, Cash Richard; Godmother Sr. Sylvia Thibodeaux. Following Katrina in 2005, Dr. Minyard worked on site in St. Gabriel, LA for several months with the Federal Disaster Mortuary team in identifying and classifying victims. He served on the committee for the creation of the Katrina Memorial in New Orleans. After retirement in 2014, he volunteered with Notre Dame Hospice in St. Tammany parish. He is a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Folsom, LA. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to the Sisters of the Holy Family at 6901 Chef Mentur Hwy New Orleans, LA 70126 for the canonization of Mother Henriette Delille. Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the Funeral Mass at Holy Name of Mary Catholic Church, 400 Verret St, Algiers, LA on Monday, September 21, 2020 at 12noon. Visitation will be held at the church from 10am until 12noon. Masks are required. Interment, McDonogh Cemetery.

The first seminar that kicks off the festival will attract people who are competitive. Wild Turkey and The Healthtender are hosting virtual relay races during the week. The "Wild Turkey Trot" will begin at 8 a.m. on Monday, so be sure to have your running shoes ready by the door.
According to the agenda for the event, groups of four will have the option to participate as a relay or as a group of four solo runners who each run the race together. Those who choose the relay option will have four participants running 10.1 km each, for a total distance of just over 25 miles. The second option will have four people as well, but their group total will equal the same 10.1 km. This works the same for individual runners who must run the 10.1 km over the course of the week. Registered individuals and teams will be added to a private group on Strava, a running application, and will have until 8 p.m. on Saturday, September 26 to log the required miles for their group.

If running isn't your style, or you're looking for something more educational, Brown-Forman is sponsoring a talk titled "Back to the Bar: Safety Nets and Slush Funds" with Anthony Mauiolo, Christina Lawrence, and Jordan Zimmerman as the speakers. The event will begin at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, with topics such as financial challenges in the hospitality industry and tips that bartenders can employ to get through COVID-19 and future issues. Experts from the hospitality industry and even outside of it will be giving different examples of how to safeguard yourself and employees in times where there is little work for bartenders.

Winding down the first night is "Tiki Rumba" sponsored by Bacardi. From 9 p.m. to 10 p.m., Tiki & Slow Jams is going to be pairing tropical cocktails with R&B music to celebrate the multicultural bartender community. For a relaxing atmosphere to enjoy good music and sweet drinks, this event is a dreamland.

Louisiana allowing
later drink sales
in new virus order
Louisiana’s governor tweaked a COVID-19 prevention order Thursday to allow alcoholic beverage sales in most of the state until 11 p.m.
The cutoff for on-premises consumption of alcohol had been 10 p.m. under orders issued last week. Edwards said in a news release he made the change after consulting with restaurant and hospitality leaders.
The order affects restaurants statewide, and bars in four parishes where the percentage of positive COVID-19 tests has been 5% or below for two weeks: Acadia, Jefferson Davis, St. Landry and Plaquemines.
The order does not affect New Orleans, which is keeping bars closed and continuing a 10 p.m. end to alcoholic beverage sales.
“I had a productive discussion this week with several restauranteurs and the Louisiana Restaurant Association and agreed that allowing the sale and service of alcohol until 11 p.m. for on premises consumption was a meaningful change we could make to the Phase 3 order to benefit restaurants that may have later service,” Edwards said. “To be consistent, my updated order will allow casinos and bars in parishes where they are allowed to be open to also serve alcohol for on-site consumption until 11 p.m. However, opened bars will still be required to close at 11 p.m.,”

Mississippi River Past, Present, and Future
David Muth and Steve Cochran
Long before European settlement of the Mississippi River corridor, humans tried to manage the river and control flooding. These actions have allowed communities such as New Orleans to flourish along the river but have also led to the coastal land loss crisis that now threatens our future. David Muth, Director of the Gulf Restoration Program for National Wildlife Federation, will share the history of human intervention in the Mississippi River’s flow and the impact it has had on our communities and culture in Louisiana. Steve Cochran, Director of the Restore the Mississippi River Delta Program with the Environmental Defense Fund, will offer insights into the Mississippi River Delta of the future.

MatchingDonors is a 501c3 nonprofit organization, and the nation’s largest living organ donor non-profit organization finding and registering living organ donors for people needing organ transplants in the United States.
Twenty-two people die every day in the United States waiting for a kidney transplant, most waiting 7 to 9 years. The team at MatchingDonors.com is working hard to make sure that does not happen by finding altruistic living organ donors for people needing kidney transplants. Many patients get their transplant through MatchingDonors.com within only six months, or less.

In conjunction with various health organizations, MatchingDonors has created this very successful PSA campaign to help people realize that they can save lives by being a living organ donor, to encourage them to register as an altruistic living organ donor, and to make them realize they can help save the lives of people needing organ transplants by donating other things.

NATIONAL CHAI DAY
On September 21st, the aroma filling the room comes from ancient spices, perfectly steeped into a cup of delicious tea. National Chai Day celebrates the strong, satisfying tea that is ordered at cafes across the country.
While the Indian beverage dates back nearly 5,000 years, the chai served in homes and coffee shops today comes in many forms. For traditional chai, steep it with black tea leaves. Add whole milk for the richest flavor. Some even prefer almond or coconut milk. The most common spice in chai is cardamom. Though blends will vary from place to place, other spices include cinnamon, nutmeg, pepper, and fennel. Finally, sweeten the tea with pure sugar.

St. Anna’s Church kicks off “Tip Jar” Music series to help local musicians survive COVID pandemic shut down
Thursday, 6 p.m. Live-stream concerts provide safe, open place for local artists to get income and promote the city’s music legacy

Every Thursday at 6 p.m., individuals can tune into the facebook page for St. Anna’s Episcopal Church and enjoy New Orleans musicians do their thing in the hopes you will contribute to their individual online “tip jar” to help support their art, announced the Very Reverend William H. Terry, Rector, St. Anna’s Episcopal Church.
“St. Anna’s has a history of supporting New Orleans musicians, especially since 2005 and the levee failure following Hurricane Katrina,” said Fr. Bill. “We provide a venue for them to play as well as offer them food and other services as The Mission to Musicians.”

“Once again, New Orleans musicians are hard pressed to produce income because of the COVID pandemic and closure of music venues. Our church offers use of our audio-visual and electronic equipment, as well as our space, to help them bring in some income through their own online tip jar,” said Fr. Bill.
Event sponsors are also sought to help every performer at least receive a baseline payment of $100 to $500 per gig, depending on the size of the music group. The program is made possible with the help of Jack Craft, an artist with Sweet Crude, and St. Anna’s Place staff.
  •          Additional upcoming performances include:

  • ·      The Storyville Stompers on Sept. 24

  • ·      Jazz guitarist and vocalist John Rankin on Oct. 1
  • ·      Singer/songwriter Michael Doussan on Oct. 8
  • ·      And Indie bands Alexis and the Samurai and Free Feral on Oct. 15 and 22 respectively.

Tiger Stadium will open the 2020 season at 25% capacity, LSU announces; no tailgating

Three LSU football games are scheduled to be televised on CBS and two more for ESPN networks, the Southeastern Conference announced Tuesday.
LSU's season-opener against Mississippi State at Tiger Stadium on Sept. 26 is scheduled to air on CBS network at 2:30 p.m.
Then, LSU's game at Auburn on Oct. 31 is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. on CBS.

A more prime-time spot is reserved for the LSU-Alabama rivalry on Nov. 14, which is scheduled to be televised at 5 p.m. in Tiger Stadium.

Meanwhile, LSU’s Oct. 3 game at Vanderbilt will be at 6:30 p.m. on the SEC Network, while its Oct. 17 game at Florida will be a 2:30 p.m. Central time kickoff on ESPN or ESPN2.

Five games are still to be determined in terms of network assignment and kickoff times: Oct. 10 versus Missouri, Oct. 24 versus South Carolina, Nov. 21 at Arkansas, Nov. 28 at Texas A&M and Dec. 5 versus Ole Miss.

While state officials are cautiously optimistic there will be some form of limited-capacity fan attendance at LSU games this fall, tailgating before the game may be off-limits to a lot of people.
Tens of thousands of people flood LSU's campus on game days, even if they do not have tickets to the game itself.
"If we can have fans, we are probably going to urge a lot of the people who do not have tickets to the games to not come to the campus,"
For the games themselves, even if they have to limit Tiger Stadium to 30-50 percent of its maximum capacity, they're hopeful that at least some fans will get a seat in Death Valley.
"The wonderful thing about football is that it is outside and we know that this virus does not survive as well outside as it does inside,"
The SEC's 10-game, league-only schedule is set to begin on Sept. 26. LSU will play its standard West Division opponents, and the Tigers added a home game with Missouri and a road game with Vanderbilt to fill out the schedule.
LSU's Week 1 opponent was announced earlier Monday with the Tigers hosting Mississippi State to open its 2020 season on Sept. 26.
Take a look at the full schedule below:
  • WEEK 1: vs. Mississippi State
  • WEEK 2: at Vanderbilt
  • WEEK 3: vs. Missouri
  • WEEK 4: at Florida
  • WEEK 5: vs. South Carolina

  • WEEK 7: off
  • WEEK 8: vs. Alabama
  • WEEK 9: at Arkansas
  • WEEK 10: at Texas A&M

This crafty couple is here to save Halloween from the coronavirus pandemic
Parents Create DIY ‘Candy Slide’ For Safe Trick-Or-Treating
All it takes to make this slide is a variety of PVC pipe and connectors, and some paint and items to decorate it. Seriously. That’s it.
YouTube
The couple in the video used a bunch of different sized pipes and connectors to create a base for their slide, which is handy. But TBH, you could prop it up on anything, so this step probably isn’t even necessary. The important thing is to have a 4-inch pipe that’s at least seven feet long, to create the Halloween candy slide itself.
YouTube

After putting all the pipe pieces together, they spray painted it black to help get those spooky Halloween vibes.
YouTube
And then they added gauze that they had stained and torn up a little bit, so it looked like spooky mummy wrapping. It is Halloween season, after all. The scarier you can make this thing, the better.
YouTube

The last step was attaching a skeleton to the end to up the spook factor even more. But that’s totally optional. This project is totally customizable, so you can decorate it however you want to fit your own Halloween vibes.
YouTube
The end result? A slide that absolutely ups your Halloween decor game, while also giving you a way to give candy to trick-or-treaters who stay a safe six-feet away. And the fact that trick-or-treating can now go on, pandemic or not, has us feeling the true spirit of the season.

UNDETERRED BY THE PANDEMIC, 2020 CRESCENT CITY CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVAL
TO BROADCAST FOUR FREE PUBLIC CONCERTS OCT. 2-11

The Crescent City Chamber Music Festival (CCMF) will not let Covid-19 stand in the way of its 5th anniversary performances this year. CCCMF will go on as planned with live performances that will be streamed to audiences from event spaces in New Orleans from October 2 to October 11, 2020.

This year’s Festival is titled "In the Darkest Night Shines the Brightest Light," and features four unique, virtual programs broadcast live and free to the public on Facebook and YouTube over the ten days of the festival. Once again, Founding Artistic Director and New Orleans native Luke Fleming will bring some of the world’s most talented chamber musicians together for audiences in New Orleans, and now, online anywhere in the world. Audiences will be treated to performances from the world-renowned classical musicians of the Manhattan Chamber Players, a collective of New York-based musicians who have delivered compelling performances of the most moving pieces that the chamber repertoire has to offer year-after-year at CCCMF.

In addition to the 12 stellar classical musicians bringing live chamber music to New Orleans this October, this year’s festival features Andrea Casarrubios, a prominent cellist praised by the likes of the New York Times, who will perform on all four concerts and also debut brand new material written specifically for this year’s festival.

“The pandemic forced us to reimagine the Crescent City Chamber Music Festival in a way that musicians and audience members can enjoy the performances in a safe and socially responsible way,” said Luke Fleming. “Virtual audiences will be treated to one-of-a-kind concerts held in four wonderful spaces across the city of New Orleans, viewable on platforms like Facebook Live and YouTube Streaming.

Should it be deemed safe by local government, the 2020 CCCMF may allow limited, socially distanced, masked seating on a first-come first-served basis, but this has yet to be confirmed. Notice will be given of this possibility at least two weeks before the festival begins,” Fleming said.

Community outreach is an important part of the festival’s mission. Since its inception, festival musicians have performed privately for audiences at nursing homes, hospitals, schools, homeless shelters, and other helping organizations across the Greater New Orleans area. This year, the festival will stream to community members of New Orleans via Zoom, Facetime, and Skype — providing a meaningful and safe online concert experience on a one-on-one basis to residents of nursing homes, retirement communities, and hospitals, as well as in educational spaces.
