NATIONAL QUESADILLA DAY (Dia de la Quesadilla) | SEPTEMBER 25

National Quesadilla Day on September 25th encourages us to pull a chair up to the table and eat some authentic Mexican food. While it’s not a sandwich or a taco, the quesadilla satisfies snack cravings while also completing a meal.

Typically made with a corn tortilla and filled with cheese, we heat quesadillas until the cheese melts. Then it hits the grill or frier until just crispy. Some people also include other fillings such as cooked sausage, chicken, pork, or beef. And don’t forget the toppings. Fresh tomatoes, salsa, herbs, sour cream, guacamole, or chilies bring a whole other level of flavor to the quesadilla. Don’t forget to finish it with a squeeze of lime. Serve it with an ice-cold beer or a margarita, and the meal is complete.

Families love quesadillas, too! In households around the country, families include quesadillas as a popular mealtime solution. In fact, V&V Supremo recently found one in three people are making quesadillas at least once a week*. Additionally, quesadillas have crossed over from authentic Mexican restaurant menus to more typical chain restaurants. Even higher-end gourmet eateries include them on their menus. Their simplicity allows for easy customization and people of all ages love to eat to them, too.

2023 SEC Football Power Rankings: Week 4

There are three unbeaten teams left in the Southeastern Conference after four weeks of action. One program that everyone expected to be there, considering its pedigree and its schedule, but two others having quietly successful seasons.

It was a fabulous weekend of conference play with both the Saturday evening games coming down to the wire.

Forget preseason polls. Forget what happened last season. Disregard recruiting rankings and what these teams look like on paper. The only criteria considered in this season's BamaCentral SEC Power Rankings is what happens between the white lines during games.

Winning is rewarded and losing is punished in our 2023 Power Rankings, so lets get right to it as we over react to four weeks of football throughout the conference.

1. Georgia (↑1) (4-0, 1-0)

  • The Bulldogs took down the UAB Blazers 49-21 despite committing three turnovers. Carson Beck's 338 yards and three touchdowns puts the back-to-back champions up to No. 1.

2. LSU (↑4) (3-1, 2-0)

  • The Bayou Bengals won the "Battle For The Boot" on a walk-off chip shot field goal in Death Valley. It wasn't convincing but they're the first program to 2-0 in conference play, winning a third game in a row.

3. Kentucky (↑2) (4-0, 1-0)

  • Big Blue nation went to Nashville and dispatched off Vanderbilt 45-28 behind sophomore Maxwell Hairston's two pick-six effort. The Wildcats have hardly been challenged this season but welcome the Florida Gators next week for a significant litmus test.

4. Missouri (-) (4-0)

  • The Tigers keep its unbeaten season alive by disposing of the Memphis Tigers in a neutral site game in St. Louis. Missouri's Brady Cook passed for 341 yards and two touchdowns despite not being 100%.

5. Alabama (↑2) (3-1, 1-0)

  • The Crimson Tide put on a vintage second-half performance against the Ole Miss Rebels to climb back into the top five. Alabama's defense allowed just three second half points and limited the Lane Train to just 56 total rushing yards.

6. Texas A&M (↑4) (3-1, 1-0)

  • The Aggies were forced into playing backup quarterback Max Johnson due to an in-game injury but still prevailed over Auburn at home 27-10. Jimbo Fisher seems to have Texas A&M on the right track again, despite finding himself on the field in the middle of a play.

7. Ole Miss (↓6) (3-1, 0-1)

  • Reality set in for the Rebels on Saturday as Ole Miss came up short in Tuscaloosa 24-10. Lane Kiffin and company can jump back up the poll quickly as they host LSU in Oxford next.

8. Auburn (↓5) (3-1, 0-1)

  • The Tigers hit the road and came up short in College Station, passing for just 56 yards between three different quarterbacks. With 10 penalties and just three of 15 third down conversions Auburn has some serious work to do on offense.

9. Florida (↓1) (3-1, 1-0)

  • The Gators toyed with the Charlotte 49ers, defeating them 22-7 while turning the ball over twice and converting just one of nine third downs.

10. Tennessee (↓1) (3-1, 0-1)

  • The Volunteers handled its business against UTSA, winning 45-14 in Knoxville. Tennessee's three wins come against opponents with a combined 3-9 record so far this season.

11. South Carolina (↑1) (2-2, 1-1)

  • Spencer Rattler outplayed Will Rogers and led the Gamecocks to its first SEC win of the season, 37-30 at home. Neither side looked overly impressive but Shane Beamer's squad gets a little boost by way of the win.

12. Arkansas (↓1) (2-2, 0-1)

  • The Hogs went to Baton Rouge and gave LSU all they wanted but were unable to take down Jayden Daniels and the Tigers. It's a second loss in consecutive weeks for Sam Pittman as Arkansas approaches the league's basement.

13. Mississippi State (-) (2-2, 0-2)

  • The Bulldogs battled South Carolina on the road but there are no moral victories in the SEC. Zach Arnett's lost two games in a row and get to welcome the Alabama Crimson Tide to try to stop the skid.

14. Vanderbilt (-) (2-3, 0-1)

  • Three losses in a row for the Commodores sours the 2-0 start for Clark Lea and his football team. AJ Swann tossed three interceptions, crushing Vanderbilt's hopes of keeping it close with Kentucky.

New Orleans can now answer the Italian sandwich obsession, and there's more than one way

BY IAN MCNULTY

Picture yourself living in some far-flung territory, so distant that it’s beyond the reach of Leidenheimer Baking Co. and its po-boy bread.

Now picture you discover someone staking a claim to making legit po-boys there. Would you approach with high anticipation or snake-bit skepticism?

I felt a combo order of these emotions with the rise of Italian sandwiches in New Orleans we’re chomping through. As a Rhode Island expat raised on grinders, I wondered if genuine satisfaction of the cravings for such could be at hand.

Meatballs or chicken parm po-boys are a standard at deeply New Orleans restaurants, especially those of the Creole-Italian subcategory; the muffuletta is essentially the homegrown answer to the Italian sub.

But these are different from the Italian sandwiches in question, as different as dumplings and ravioli. A craving for one cannot be met by the other.

These are sandwiches from the Italian deli tradition so richly represented around the Northeast, itself Balkanized in its variegated take on these creations. Is the loaf sliced in half (as is all too common) or partially cut into a wing formation (the better to cradle the contents)? Is the lettuce chopped or whole leaf or is it there at all?

I’m happy to say that what we’re seeing in New Orleans now is not just an imitation of a style, but a fulfillment of that tradition, transferred to a different place, and achieved by the specificity of detail.

Gamechanger finds its groove

The gamechanger for this is Francolini’s Italian Deli (motto: "Not everything from Jersey sucks"), which Tara Francolini (yes, a New Jersey expat) opened in July.

“The Italian” ($14.99) here is the gold standard for Italian subs in New Orleans. It’s the way the flavors of the thin-cut meats (mortadella, prosciutto, hot capicola, genoa salami) meld with the vinegar and provolone and the dressings for a gush of flavor that seems to pour forth between the bread (add hot peppers for fireworks).

Some may look at a sandwich like this and think there's too much going into one loaf (oh, believe me, they're out there). But it's the specific combination and ruffly, thin-sliced layering and splash of dressings that makes the sandwich so compelling.

The Italian sandwich at Francolini's Italian Deli in New Orleans is a classic of the style best known from the northeast. (Staff photo by Ian McNulty, NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune)

At Francolini's, it is also the bread itself. The seeded roll gives just the right texture – a satisfying grip as you chew, but not so much that you’re fighting with it. It is sliced, not winged.

That bread is made from Francolini’s recipe by Ayu Bakehouse, the Frenchmen Street bakery that has its own expertise in regional styles.

Since Francolini’s opened, there’s been talk about the excellence of the sandwiches, and also the daunting line. Things have smoothed out here lately though.

Sure, if you roll out of bed late on a Saturday and join all the other walking hangovers with a hankering for the meatball parm, you’ll find quite a line. But weekday sandwiches have been a snap, and you can order ahead online and pick up your bagged order to go. I like the experience of ordering at the deli, but I also appreciate this efficiency and it works very well (although, important caveat,

Hours here remain limited, open five hours a day (11 a.m.-4 p.m.) six days a week (closed Wednesday).

A saltwater wedge is on its way. How will it affect our lives?

From drinking and bathing to watering plants, here's what to know

By GABRIELLA KILLETT

As if heat, humidity, hurricanes and the eroding coastline aren't enough, the New Orleans area is now threatened by a saltwater wedge inching up the Mississippi River, potentially contaminating the source of drinking water south of Lake Pontchartrain.

First things first: There's no need to panic. The wedge won't reach water intakes in New Orleans' urban core for weeks. The wedge is moving upriver at about 1½ miles a day.

.

  • By GABRIELLA KILLETT | Staff writer 1 min to read

Still, residents are wondering what will happen then. Here are some answers.

Is it safe to drink?

When the salinity of the river rises where government systems draw water for purification, it will be too high to be processed by the human body. That could make you sick, and even lead to kidney failure.

However, the Army Corps of Engineers is arranging barges to deliver 36 million gallons of uncontaminated river water daily for use by local utilities.

How about pets?

Animals that consume salty water also can fall ill. Consuming excess salt could cause vomiting and diarrhea.

Lawns and plants?

In many cases, salty water can kill plants, especially in environments typically dependent on fresh water. Lawns and pets will need rain or other sources of fresh water to thrive.

Bathing?

This is OK. Showering or bathing in salt water can even have health benefits, including loosening muscles and soothing skin.

What about plumbing?

Over time, high salinity can damage plumbing, appliances, cooling systems that use water and water heaters. The best source of information for specific equipment is the manufacturer, vendor or service provider, the Louisiana Health Department says.

Dishwashers? Clothes washers?

Dishwashers are known to process high levels of sodium chloride. But appliance experts also say salt can damage a machine's water softening abilities and clog its salt tank. Check with the manfacturer for specifics.

Clothes-washing machines can function normally, but excess salt can lead to residue on clothes.

Washing cars?

Saltwater can damage vehicle paint and metals, which can lead to rust and erosion. If you wash your vehicle at home, use bottled or treated water as salinity levels rise.

Will it affect our fish?

Freshwater fish have varying levels of adaptability to saltwater. Anglers in the Mississippi River must be flexible, and be aware that saltwater fish might be moving upriver with the wedge.

What do we do now?

Don't panic. There is no shortage of bottled water nationally, so local officials urge people who live upriver of the wedge to stop buying extra.

"The people that really need it in Venice and other parts of Plaquemines are having a hard time getting water," said Patrick Harvey, Plaquemines Parish's emergency preparedness director.

Brazil takes pride in being the world's largest producer and exporter of coffee beans. Nestled in South America, this vibrant country is renowned for its rich coffee culture, with vast plantations stretching across its landscape. Coffee is deeply ingrained in Brazilian traditions and has played a pivotal role in the nation's history, shaping its economy and identity.

Brazil's ideal climatic conditions and diverse geography provide the perfect environment for coffee cultivation. The country's vast territory encompasses several distinct regions, each offering unique microclimates suitable for different coffee varieties. The prominent coffee-growing regions include Minas Gerais, São Paulo, Paraná, and Espírito Santo, among others.

The coffee industry in Brazil is characterized by both small family-owned farms and large-scale commercial plantations. These farms employ advanced agricultural practices, combining traditional knowledge with modern technology. Meticulous care is taken during the cultivation, harvesting, and processing of coffee beans to ensure the production of superior-quality coffee.

Brazilian coffee is predominantly of the Arabica variety, known for its delicate flavors and aroma. The beans are hand-picked when they reach their optimal ripeness, ensuring a consistent quality. Post-harvest, the coffee cherries undergo various processing methods, including the widely used "natural" or "dry" method, which involves drying the cherries in the sun, and the "washed" or "wet" method, which utilizes water to remove the outer layers.

The significance of coffee in Brazil's economy cannot be overstated. The coffee industry contributes significantly to the national GDP, generating employment opportunities for millions of Brazilians. The government, along with various coffee associations, implements policies and initiatives to support and promote sustainable coffee production practices, ensuring the long-term viability of the industry.

Brazil's dominance in the global coffee market is evident through its exports. The country ships coffee beans to every corner

What does "obstreperous" mean?

Noisy

obstreperous Pronunciation: /əbˈstrɛpərəs/

Definition: Noisy and difficult to control or restrain; unruly or boisterous in behavior.

Origin: The word "obstreperous" originated from the Latin word "obstreperus," meaning noisy or clamorous. It entered the English language in the early 17th century.

Example: Despite numerous warnings, the obstreperous children continued to run and scream through the library, disrupting the peaceful atmosphere.

Noisy, in the context of "obstreperous," describes a person or thing that creates a lot of sound or uproar, often in a disruptive or unruly manner. While "noisy" is a broader term encompassing any sound-related disturbance, "obstreperous" specifically refers to behavior that is unruly and difficult to control due to its noise. It implies a sense of boisterousness and lack of obedience or restraint. So, when someone is described as obstreperous, it suggests that they are not only loud but also disruptive and resistant to authority or rules.

NATIONAL LOBSTER DAY | SEPTEMBER 25

National Lobster Day on September 25th takes a taste of a seafood favorite.

The simplest way to enjoy Lobster is boiled then dipped in melted butter. A couple of favorite lobster recipes include Lobster Newberg and Lobster Thermidor. It is also the main ingredient in soup, bisque, lobster rolls, and salads.

Large lobsters are estimated to be 50 years old.

These marine crustaceans live at the bottom of the ocean. If they avoid the lobster pot, some can live up to 100 years old. Even though we consider them a delicacy today, that wasn’t always the case. In colonial times, the lobster received very little culinary credit. In fact, the pigs and goats ate more lobster than the well-to-do.

While lobsters arrive at our tables bright red, they don’t start out that way. In the ocean, they come in many colors. Some are yellow, green, or even blue.

Now that lobsters rank higher on the menu, consider these nutrition facts.

  • Lobsters contain no carbohydrates and 27.55 grams of protein per 1 cup serving.
  • In that same 1 cup serving, there are 129 calories and 1.25 grams of fat.
  • Eating lobster offers an excellent source of selenium, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin A, and calcium.

About the Exhibition

In 1776, many colonists made a great leap to a new idea: maybe they could do without monarchy and aristocracy. If they could unite with one another, “the common people” of the colonies might form a more equal society and government. American Democracy: A Great Leap of Faith, a traveling exhibition from the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service, examines the continuing evolution of America’s experiment in a government “of, by, and for the people.” The exhibition will be on view at The Historic New Orleans Collection from June 17, 2023, to October 8, 2023. Admission is free.

Drawn from the permanent exhibition of the same name at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History, American Democracy explores the challenges and triumphs that generations of Americans encountered as they sought to create a government based on the sovereignty of the people. It explores the history of citizen participation, debate, and compromise from the nation’s formation to today.

Featuring engaging multimedia experiences, immersive design, and artifacts from the Smithsonian Institution, state historical organizations, and The Historic New Orleans Collection, American Democracy demonstrates that self-government relies on every citizen’s active participation in the quest to form a “more perfect union.” Exhibition sections explore the origins of American democracy, the changing identity of eligible voters, the machinery of democracy, the right to petition and protest beyond the ballot, and the rights and responsibilities of citizens.

American Democracy is sponsored locally by the 2023 Bienville Circle, J.P.Morgan Private Bank, and WDSU-TV.

A companion exhibition, “Yet She Is Advancing”: New Orleans Women and the Right to Vote, 1878–1970, is on view through November 5, 2023. Expanding on a 2020 virtual exhibition on THNOC’s website, the exhibition tells a decades-long story through objects, images, documents, and interactive displays—and through the words of the New Orleans women who for nearly 100 years persisted in their struggle to obtain the vote

It’s Fettuccine Frenzy at Middendorf’s Manchac & Middendorf’s Slidell! Every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in September, handmade paper-thin fettuccine is on the menu.

This mouth-watering dish is served with your choice of classic Alfredo or Marinara Sauce and topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese with optional add-ons of shrimp, crabmeat and chicken.

  • Fettuccine with Alfredo Sauce topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese 15.25
  • Fettuccine with Marinara Sauce topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese 15.25
  • Optional add-ons:
  • Shrimp 10.95
  • Crabmeat 9.95
  • Chicken 6.95
  • Side of Fettuccine topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese 9.50

Fun Facts:

  • Our handmade, paper-thin fettuccine was a guest favorite at Bella Luna in the French Quarter. Bella Luna was a fine dining restaurant owned and operated by Horst and Karen Pfeifer. It closed due to Hurricane Katrina and never reopened. The memory of Bella Luna lives on through Fettuccine Frenzy at Middendorf’s. Same Pasta. Same Taste. None of the Fancy.
  • Middendorf’s Owner and European Master Chef Horst Pfeifer makes the fettuccine from scratch which consists solely of Semolina flour and eggs. It’s a very time consuming process to make the fettuccine so paper-thin, but it’s definitely worth it.
  • Fettuccine is available all day (lunch and dinner).
  • Our full menu is also available.
  • Uncooked fettuccine is also available for purchase to make a quick meal at home.

We hope you can join us for Fettuccine Frenzy — Every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in September!

TICKETS & INFO

Laugh and cry with these lovable Louisiana ladies who are “as delicate as magnolias but as tough as steel" as they support each other through the challenges of life.

This tear-jerking comedy is set in a beauty salon in the fictional northwestern Louisiana parish of Chinquapin, based on the writer’s hometown of Natchitoches, Louisiana, and the death of his sister. The play spans three years in the lives of Truby, Shelby, Annelle, M’Lynn, and Clairee, whose heartaches and hilarious attitudes pay tribute to southern women’s survival skills. Experience the eternally relevant 1987 Broadway hit drama that became a beloved movie in 1989 starring Sally Field, Shirley MacClaine, Olympia Dukakis, Julia Roberts, Dolly Parton, and Darryl Hannah. With country fried quips such as “I’m not crazy—I’ve just been in a very bad mood for forty years,” “I have a strict policy that nobody cries alone in my presence,” and “Don’t try to get on my good side—I no longer have one” …you will cry, laugh, and be Southern comforted by these warm, wise women.

PLAYMAKERS’ WANTS YOU TO GET YOUR TICKETS

FOR INTO THE BREECHES! OPENING THIS WEEKEND

The 2023-24 Playmakers Theater season begins with a WWII era comedy interwoven with Shakespeare’s Henry IV and V – of course, women play all the roles. Well, almost. Into the Breeches! is directed by Merry Antoon assisted by Naomi Lee Shawn-O’Donnell. The show runs Sept. 30-Oct. 15.

The New Orleans WWII Museum is collaborating on Breeches!, a masterful blending of a story about women taking the stage to take their minds off their husbands “over there” with soaring Shakespearean dialogue including the rousing “Band of Brothers” speech. In an interesting twist, the script, written to take place in Rhode Island, allows localization and Playmakers has employed a local historian to update the script to take place in WWII-era New Orleans.

To set the Forties ambience, the theater lobby will be decked out with WWII era posters and actual newspapers announcing the Pearl Harbor raid, the declaration of war and the Allied invasion of Europe.

Playmakers’ season tickets are now on sale for all six shows for $150 on BonTempsTix.com or individual tickets for Into the Breeches! which runs Saturdays at 7 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. are available for $20, also at BonTempsTix.com.

Into The Breeches is supported by a grant from the Louisiana Division of the Arts, Office of Cultural Development, Recreation and Tourism, in cooperation with the Louisiana State Arts Council, as administered by the St. Tammany Parish Commission on Cultural Affairs. Funding has also been provided by the National Endowment for the Arts.

THE DOOKY CHASE KITCHEN: LEAH’S LEGACY cooking series celebrates Leah Chase, the “Queen of Creole Cuisine.”

The 26-part cooking series, produced by WYES-TV in New Orleans, was shot on location at Dooky Chase’s Restaurant with dishes prepared by younger generations of the Chase family who have led the restaurant since Leah’s death in 2019.

Viewers will meet Leah’s grandson, Edgar “Dook” Chase IV, who now oversees the restaurant’s kitchen; her niece Cleo Robinson, who joined Leah in the kitchen in 1980; and the restaurant’s newest chef, Leah’s great-granddaughter Zoe Chase. Paired with some of the menus are specialty cocktails crafted by Leah’s granddaughter Eve Marie Haydel, the restaurant’s beverage manager who has updated drink recipes from the restaurant’s earlier days. Granddaughter Chase Kamata narrates. Each 30-minute episode explores a new take on Creole classics and a different chapter of the restaurant’s history.

See it every Saturday at 10am and on Sundays at 11:30am. Watch on WYES-TV and stream on wyes.org/live and on the WYES and PBS Apps. Out of WYES’ viewing area?

We're happy to bring a piece of the past back to WYES starting this weekend. GREAT CHEFS OF NEW ORLEANS, the vintage TV series that began WYES’ legacy of award-winning nationally broadcast cooking shows, returns to the station – 40 years after its debut. Tune in Saturdays at 1pm. The original 26 episodes of GREAT CHEFS OF NEW ORLEANS will air on WYES, followed by other episodes of the multi-part series every Saturday.

Thanks to executive producer John Shoup for sharing the series (produced and directed by the late John Beyer) with us. It begins Saturday in the kitchen of the legendary Chef Warren Leruth, and you'll see many other local icons below in the weeks to come. For all the episodes, the distinctive voices of Mary Lou Conroy and Andres Calandria narrate, with original music from the Charlie Byrd Trio, the Dukes of Dixieland and Banu Gibson.  Krewe de Pink Prom is a fun-filled prom night for adults organized by Krewe de Pink, a local, all-volunteer, non-profit. The purpose of the event is to raise funds to support breast cancer research at Tulane Cancer Research and provide a space for survivors, supporters and their friends and family to celebrate their victories over the disease.

Krewe de Pink’s annual Prom takes place on Saturday, September 30, 2023 at the Generations Hall in New Orleans, LA. Dressed in their favorite Prom styles or pink bling, attendees will enjoy a night of live music, a unique auction, fun raffles, a dance performance and a special tribute highlighting Breast Cancer Survivors who attend the event.

For many, this is a chance to relive or reinvent prom night by taking Prom photos and dancing the night away in the spacious and beautiful Generations Hall. New Orleans’ own Crescent City Soul will keep the dance floor full with Disco, Funk, Jazz, Motown, R&B, Salsa, and more from the 1960’s to present-day.

This adult (21 & older) Prom night is a cash bar event featuring Krewe de Pink’s 2023 Cocktail Contest winner’s specialty drinks. Attendees may bring along snacks and favorite party food items for their table.

The Krewe de Pink Prom auction has a variety of items to bid on including New Orleans Staycation packages, jewelry, artwork and one-of-a-kind hand decorated costume bras. Raffle prizes include a wine barrel, a beer bucket, a Lotto ticket bundle and there will even be a chance to win the title of Krewe de Pink Prom Queen or King 2023!

The Pussyfooters will show their support for the cause with a special performance and a Breast Cancer Survivors promenade will take place honoring survivors present during the event. Those who attend are in for a unique and memorable experience while making a difference for the cause. Krewe de Pink Prom directly supports breast cancer research at Tulane Cancer Center.

The Backstreet Cultural Museum, the local institution dedicated to preserving the cultural heritage of New Orleans, will host a celebration to mark an expansion into an adjoining room. On Saturday, September 30, the museum will host an event featuring never-before-seen exhibits and musical entertainment.

The expansion celebration will take place from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Attendees can enjoy music spun by the museum’s own DJ Du, while a unique Black Indian performance at 4 p.m. is set to be a highlight of the event. Additionally, Big Chief Victor Harris, known as the Spirit of Fi Yi Yi, will deliver a message to the crowd, underscoring the significance of this expansion.

This expansion celebration comes on the heels of the museum’s first anniversary in its new home, marking a year of continued growth and success. Initially founded in 1999 by photographer Sylvester “Hawk” Francis, a recipient of the 2004 Best Of The Beat Heartbeat Award, the museum has served as a vital showcase for his work and the broader cultural scene of New Orleans. After opening its doors in the Blandin Funeral Home in 1999, the museum has persevered through the years, even surviving the challenges posed by Hurricane Ida, which damaged its former location.

To learn more about the Backstreet Cultural Museum and the upcoming event, visit the museum’s official website.

Philip Melancon

Mancini’s music was the soundtrack of mid-century Hollywood. He contributed to over 250 movies and scores of T.V. shows. To name a few: Peter Gunn and The Pink Panther in the 50’s, Breakfast at Tiffany’s and Two for the Road in the 60’s, Darling Lili in the 70’, and Victor / Victoria in the 80’s. The focus of Mancini by Moonlight is the lyrical songs of Mancini. Although this giant of American music was recognized for his sweeping scores, here we feature his songs with lyrics. Moon River, Days of Wine and Roses, Charade, It Had Better Be Tonight and such. It’s a rich library of exceptional melodies coupled with the masterful lyrics of Johnny Mercer, Leslie Bricusse and Jay Livingston.

Mancini by Moonlight: the cabaret, will be performed by the seasoned duo of Heidi and Phil Melancon. Joined to their hips the ever so hip David Cook and Alden Hagardorn.

See you under the twinkling stars of Monkey Hill.

Final Four Rematch: LSU WBB To Face Virginia Tech in SEC/ACC Challenge

Story by Zack Nagy

© Provided by LSU Country on FanNation

LSU will host Virginia Tech in a Final Four rematch on November 30 at 8 p.m. CT as a part of the ACC/SEC Challenge.

The Tigers and Hokies met last season in the Final Four as LSU came from behind in the fourth quarter to clinch a spot in the national championship game. The Tigers trailed by nine to start the fourth quarter but outscored the Hokies by 16 in the final quarter to claim LSU’s first national championship game berth. LSU defeated Iowa two days later for the national championship.

LSU will enter the season with multiple players returning from the program’s first ever national championship team along with a talented list of newcomers that include the nation’s No. 1 rated recruiting class and the top two players from this year’s transfer portal.

Related video

Forward Angel Reese headlines LSU’s returners as the defending Most Outstanding Player from the Final Four. She set the NCAA record with 34 double-doubles throughout the season as a dominant scorer and rebounder. Reese led the SEC in both scoring (23.0 ppg) and rebounding (15.4 rpg).

Guard Flau’jae Johnson is another returning starter for the Tigers who earned SEC Freshman of the Year. In her first year of college basketball, Johnson averaged 11.0 points per game and 5.9 rebounds per game. Guard Kateri Poole started in LSU’s final five games throughout the championship run, bringing a defensive physicality to the court while having a knack to knock down big shots for the Tigers.

LSU will also bring back contributors like forward Sa’Myah Smith who was named to the SEC All-Freshman and guard Last-Tear Poa. Both Smith and Sa’Myah played critical and productive minutes off the bench in the national championship win over Iowa.

The Tigers top-rated incoming freshmen class is headlined by guard Mikaylah Williams who was named the 2023 Morgan Wooten National Player of the Year as the top high school player. Forward Aalyah Del Rosario, the nation’s No. 7 rated player, played in the McDonald’s All-American game with Williams and the Tigers also bring in freshmen guard Angelica Velez who was named Tennessee’s Division II-A Miss Basketball and guard Janae Kent.

LSU was active in the transfer portal, adding guard Hailey Van Lith and forward Aneesah Morrow who were ranked No. 1 and 2, respectively, in ESPN’s transfer portal rankings. Van Lith averaged 19.7 points, 4.5 assists and 3.2 rebounds last season, earning AP All-America honorable mention honors while leading Louisville to the Elite Eight. Van Lith and Iowa’s Caitlin Clark are the only two players in the country who averaged at least 19 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists throughout the year. Morrow was a lethal scorer (24.7 ppg) and rebounder (12.2 rpg) at DePaul. Her and Reese were the only two players in the country to rank inside the top 10 in the nation in both scoring and rebounding.
