FALLING NEEDLES FAMILY FEST DAY
Falling Needles Family Fest Day on December 30th serves as a reminder to clean up and recycle the live Christmas tree.
- Every state offers recycling options, many with pick up.
- Mulch the tree for bedding around your home or donate to mulching programs.
-
Before recycling, you can provide shelter to birds and use the tree as a place to hang treats to feed them. The tree will need some anchoring - See this article from Purdue University for more details. When winter is over, you can still use the tree for other recycling needs.
- After your tree provided shelter to the birds, it can also offer shelter to the fish, too. In ponds and lakes, trees are used to create protection for spawning and feeding.
- While your tree should never be burned in a wood stove or fireplace indoors due to the type of oils in fir and evergreen trees, the tree may be chopped and used in the firepit outdoors.
- Depending on where you live, Christmas trees may be used as soil erosion barriers for lakes, rivers, and dunes.

LA Fire Marshal offers New Year fireworks safety tips
By Teiko Foxx
If you plan to start the New Year with a bang, the State Fire Marshal’s Office wants to remind you of some simple tips regarding fireworks safety.
Spokesperson Ashley Rodrigue says the first thing you should do is to make sure there are no fireworks restrictions in your parish.
“Make sure wherever it is you are planning to pop fireworks that it’s legal to do so. There are different roles, different laws in different parts of our state,” she said.
Rodrigue says it’s best to attend a public display where professionals are handling the pyrotechnics.
“Make sure wherever you’re setting up your fireworks to be set off that it is at least 200 feet away from structures, people who are watching, vehicles, any type of environment or objects that are easily set ablaze,” she said.
Rodrigue suggests having a water source nearby in case of any type of emergency or fire. Also, do not pop fireworks when impaired because it slows your reaction time. She reminds adults to never give children fireworks, even sparklers.
“Don’t allow children to play or use fireworks even with a parent present at all. It’s best to give them some alternative options like glow sticks or glow little items like necklaces and bracelets,” said Rodrigue.

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — The holidays have arrived in Greater New Orleans, and local law enforcement agencies want to make sure residents get home safely after festive celebrations.
While making your holiday plans, officials with the St. Tammany Parish and St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s offices are reminding residents of their efforts to curb impaired driving throughout the season.
Holiday travel at MSY going smoothly
St. Tammany Parish Sheriff Randy Smith said his office is participating in the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign and is increasing patrols to “target impaired drivers.”
Smith said the STPSO is also offering free rides home to people in St. Tammany Parish who cannot get a sober ride home.
“If you know you’re going to be drinking alcohol, have a plan. Get a designated driver, call a cab or arrange for a lift from a rideshare company. If you have exhausted all resources and cannot find a way to get home, call the STPSO. We will provide you a safe ride home,” Smith said.
STPSO officials said those who don’t live in the parish can still contact deputies who will work with them to find a safe way to get home.
St. Tammany Parish residents looking to use the service can call (985)-898-2338 through New Year’s Day.
St. Charles Parish Sheriff Greg Champagne said the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office is also offering parish residents free rides home this holiday season.
Champagne said anyone who consumed alcohol and needs a safe ride home in St. Charles Parish can call (985)-783-6807 through New Year’s Day.
The St. Bernard Parish Sheriff’s Office is also bringing back its “Holiday Ride Home” program, where parish residents can call the sheriff’s office at (504)-271-2501 for a free, no questions asked ride home through Jan. 2.

By Popular Demand: Homage to Trees Exhibition at Crevasse 22 l River House Open Saturday, December 30 12-4 pm, 8122 Saro Lane, St. Bernard
WHAT: Contemporary Sculptures and Monumental Works, combined with Traditional Plein Air Paintings and photographs invite viewers to appreciate the importance of better caring for our treasured Live Oaks and other trees. As one of over twenty exhibitions at Crevasse 22 | River House and other regional locations over our 15 year history, the Creative Alliance of New Orleans has endeavored to shine a light on the important but underappreciated work of our regional creative artists of all disciplines, and of our unique but threatened environment. See a stop action review of the work here.
WHY: We as citizens of this region need to make sure our creatives have the opportunities they need to build their creative practice here in New Orleans and thereby create a more robust and sustained creative economy. The Creative Alliance of New Orleans has been working on this mission through many initiatives, including a major Strategic Plan now in final production; creative career training; networking meetings, " CANOpeners"; and a plethora of marketing and advocacy initiatives. Thankfully, we are hearing more and more people and leaders referring to the "Creative Industries" section of our economy. It has been our message to help our citizens understand the economic value of the creative disciplines, support and invest in them, including visual, performing, media, design, literary and culinary arts.
We have done this with minimal funding, but the enthusiastic appreciation of our region's creatives, and many leaders. You have only to listen to one of literally thousands of interviews with creatives over the ten years I have presented on my radio program Crosstown Conversations to hear directly about their interests, love of our region, desire to stay here, but limitations for advancement. Listen to Crosstown Conversations interviews on soundcloud.

In which war did the Battle of the Bulge take place?
The Battle of the Bulge, also known as the Ardennes Offensive, was a major German offensive campaign on the Western Front during World War II which took place from 16 December 1944 to 25 January 1945.
Did You Know? Tanks originally got their name from the British. It was during their development that the Brits took to calling these massive machines ‘tanks’ to make any German spies think that they were building massive water tanks to provide water to troops.

NEW ORLEANS – A pair of 20-plus point performances by Jaylen Forbes and Kolby King led Tulane University men's basketball (9-3) back into the win column to close non-conference play with a dominant 94-64 victory over Dillard (7-5) on Friday.
With the win, the Green Wave improved to 7-1 at home and matched its best start entering conference play since 2017-18 with a 9-3 mark overall. The victory also pushed Tulane to 24-9 to finish the 2023 calendar year.
All 13 players that entered the game for the Wave found the scoring column as Forbes and King led the way with 22 points each. Forbes also notched a team-high three steals and registered his 45th career game with three or more made three-pointers as he hit four from downtown. The 22-point performance moved the senior guard into fifth all-time in scoring with 1,594 points passing Phil Hicks.
King recorded his first career double-double adding a career-high 10 assists to go with his 22 points. The sophomore guard is the 11th Division I player this season with a 20 point/10 assist game.
Sion James was the only other player for the Green Wave to tally double figures finishing with 13 points to go with five boards, three assists, and two steals.
Redshirt sophomore Max Bowman highlighted the scoring off the bench as he recorded his first career points for the Wave knocking down a corner three in the second half.
Up next, Tulane open American Athletic Conference action at home as it hosts Rice on Wednesday, January 3. Tipoff between the Green Wave and the Owls is set for 8 p.m. on ESPNU.

The Secret Language of Birds: How Feathered Friends Inspired Human Speech
Birds have always fascinated humans with their ability to communicate through melodious songs and complex calls. Their enchanting melodies have not only inspired poets and musicians, but they have also played a significant role in the development of human speech. In this blog post, we will explore the intriguing connection between birds and the evolution of human language.
The Melodious Symphony of Birdsong
Birdsong has been admired for centuries, captivating listeners with its beautiful melodies and intricate patterns. Birds use their songs to communicate various messages, including attracting mates, establishing territory boundaries, and warning others of potential dangers. Their songs are often characterized by a complex arrangement of notes, rhythms, and even regional dialects.
Mimicry: The Art of Imitating Birds
Humans have long been fascinated by the ability of certain bird species to mimic sounds from their environment, including the calls of other birds and even human speech. Birds such as parrots, mynas, and starlings are particularly adept at imitating a wide range of sounds, often with astonishing accuracy.
The art of mimicking bird songs dates back centuries, with ancient cultures using bird mimicry as a form of entertainment. In fact, the ancient Greeks and Romans kept pet birds known as "talking birds" that could mimic human speech. These marvels of nature not only entertained their owners but also sparked curiosity about the origins of human language.
The Vocal Learning Connection
The ability of birds to mimic sounds is not a mere coincidence but rather a result of a shared trait with humans known as vocal learning. Vocal learning refers to the ability to acquire new vocalizations by imitating sounds heard in the environment.
While most animals, including non-human primates, can produce vocalizations specific to their species, only a select few possess the ability of vocal learning. Humans, along with certain bird species like parrots, songbirds, and hummingbirds, have this unique ability, which has been crucial in the development of human language.

BACON DAY
On December 30th each year, bacon lovers celebrate one of nature's favored gifts on Bacon Day! The day reminds us that bacon is not just for breakfast and encourages us to test out various ways to enjoy this culinary marvel.
Everything is better with bacon, so someone said once. And our research shows very little to dispute this assertion.
The United States and Canada make bacon from the pork belly. Other countries around the world use the side and back cuts of pork. The meat is cured in either a salt brine or a salt pack. It is then either dried, boiled, or smoked.
Bacon is a very popular food in the USA. In 2020, over half of the U.S. population said they used a pound or more bacon that year. You can also find many items flavored or scented with bacon, including popcorn, soap, candles, air fresheners, and much more. While these uses fit right into the day, we suggest cooking with bacon.
It's not just for breakfast anymore, either. Bacon improves everything from beverages to dessert. Some cocktails such as the Bloody Mary and Caesar add bacon to the olives, pickles, and other assorted ingredients. Bacon improves the flavor of many appetizers, sandwiches, and soups. Incorporate bacon into salads as a topping or mix it into the dressing. For dessert, bacon pairs well with maple frosting or maple ice cream. Thanks to bacon's salty, smoky flavor, it compliments sweet quite well. The possibilities are endless.

I suppose we'll also have to point out he's only a cartoon character."

The Grammar Police: Common Mistakes to Avoid in Writing and Speaking
Grammar is the backbone of effective communication. It serves as a set of rules that enable us to convey our thoughts, ideas, and emotions accurately. However, even the most experienced writers and speakers can fall victim to common grammatical errors. These mistakes can undermine the clarity and impact of our message. In this blog post, we will explore some of the most prevalent errors, offering tips on how to avoid them and enhance our writing and speaking skills.
Subject-Verb Agreement: A Balancing Act
One of the most frequent grammatical mistakes occurs in subject-verb agreement. This error arises when the subject and verb in a sentence do not match in number. For example, saying "The team were playing well" instead of "The team was playing well" creates confusion. To avoid this mistake, ensure that the verb agrees with the subject in both singular and plural form.
Pronoun Confusion: Avoiding Ambiguity
Another common blunder is pronoun confusion. This error arises when the pronoun used does not clearly refer to its intended antecedent. For instance, consider the sentence "Sara asked Lisa to help her with her homework, and she gladly agreed." Here, it is unclear whether "she" refers to Sara or Lisa. To prevent pronoun confusion, always make sure your pronouns have clear antecedents and are used consistently throughout your writing or speech.
Dangling and Misplaced Modifiers: A Game of Hide and Seek
Modifiers are words or phrases that provide additional information about a subject or action. Dangling modifiers occur when the subject being modified is missing from the sentence or is unclear. For example, "Running down the street, the dog chased the ball" implies that the dog is running, rather than the intended meaning of the sentence. To rectify this, rephrase the sentence to clearly indicate who or what is running.
Misplaced modifiers, on the other hand, occur when the modifier is placed too far away from the word it is meant to modify. For instance, saying "I nearly ate the entire pizza" instead of "I ate nearly the entire pizza" changes the meaning significantly. To avoid misplaced modifiers, ensure that the modifier is placed close to the word it modifies, making the intended meaning clear.
Apostrophe Catastrophes: Possessives and Contractions
Apostrophes are often misused when indicating possession or creating contractions. The two most common errors are confusing "its" and "it's" and misusing apostrophes in plural forms. "Its" is a possessive pronoun and should be used to show ownership, while "it's" is a contraction of "it is" or "it has." For example, saying "The cat licked it's paws" instead of "The cat licked its paws" is incorrect.
Plural forms should not include apostrophes unless indicating possession. For instance, saying "I have three dog's" instead of "I have three dogs" is incorrect.
Comma Splices: Separating with Style
Comma splices occur when two independent clauses are joined by a comma alone, without a coordinating conjunction. For example, saying "I enjoy hiking, I find it relaxing" is a comma splice. To rectify this, you can either replace the comma with a coordinating conjunction (e.g., "I enjoy hiking, and I find it relaxing") or use a semicolon instead of the comma.
Run-on Sentences: Slow Down and Breathe
Run-on sentences are similar to comma splices but occur when two or more independent clauses are joined without any punctuation or conjunctions. These sentences can be lengthy, confusing, and difficult to follow. To fix a run-on sentence, consider dividing it into separate sentences or using appropriate punctuation to create clear breaks between the independent clauses.
Spelling Slip-Ups: Double Trouble
Spelling mistakes can undermine the credibility of your writing or speaking. Common errors include confusing homophones (words that sound the same but have different meanings) such as "their," "they're," and "there." It is crucial to proofread your work carefully and use spell-check tools to catch these errors. Additionally, expanding your vocabulary and familiarizing yourself with commonly misspelled words can significantly enhance your writing skills.
Grammar mistakes can happen to anyone, regardless of their level of expertise. However, by familiarizing ourselves with common errors and diligently proofreading our work, we can significantly improve our writing and speaking skills. Remember to pay attention to subject-verb agreement, pronoun usage, modifiers, apostrophes, punctuation, and spelling. As we strive for clear and effective communication, let's embrace the important role of grammar rules and avoid being caught by the Grammar Police.

1957: The Old Girod Cemetery
A post a few weeks ago on the old Girod Cemetery spawned several questions about the exact location of the former graveyard. As this detail from the 1893 Robinson’s City Atlas will show, the Girod Cemetery may be seen in the center of the map. I have also included two photographs showing the state of the cemetery before it was closed.
Established in 1822, the cemetery was located between Freret and Liberty Streets and between Cypress and Perilliat Streets in what is now the Central Business District of the city. The former New Basin Canal may be seen to the left and there are several businesses located all around the cemetery, mostly lumber yards and mills. The cemetery was closed in 1957.
The property was deconsecrated, and the remains were exhumed and reinterred at other sites – those records are available at the Tulane University Library in the Special Collections Division. In the late 1960s the area underwent redevelopment, with the Louisiana Superdome (1967 plans approved, 1971 construction begins, and 1975 construction completed), the New Orleans Centre shopping center (opened 1988), and the Dominion Tower (opened 1989, later CNG Tower, renamed Benson Tower in 2009).
A significant portion of the New Orleans Centre was repurposed in 2010 as Champions Square, a pre-game tailgating space. The former Girod Cemetery was located on the ground now occupied by Champions Square and the Louisiana Superdome parking garages. For those who have an interest, may I suggest Leonard Huber’s book “New Orleans Architecture: The Cemeteries” from Pelican Publishing.

City Park Prepares for Enhanced Celebration in the Oaks
Expanded holiday festival to include Driving Tour, amusement-park rides and reimagined Walking Tour
New Orleans City Park’s Celebration in the Oaks, one of the most-spectacular holiday lights festivals in the country, has fascinated guests for generations. The month-long fundraiser attracts over 135,000 visitors each year who come to see City Park’s famous live oak trees swathed in over a million twinkling lights and discover hundreds of breathtaking displays throughout the Park. This year, THE New Orleans holiday tradition is taking it to another level.
“With the Driving Tour and Walking Tour, this will be the biggest footprint Celebration in the Oaks has had since Hurricane Katrina,” said Cara Lambright, City Park Conservancy CEO. “As our largest annual fundraiser, we can’t wait to share this exciting celebration with our community.”
Boasting more light displays, new attractions and the return of the Botanical Garden Walking Tour, the 2022 Celebration will offer a variety of options, and price points, for guests to choose from.
Highlights this year include:
2.25-mile Driving Tour with enhanced displays
Walking Tour with Botanical Garden access and Carousel Gardens Amusement Park rides included
Multiple dedicated Bike Nights
Botanical Garden Dripping Tree, Poinsettia Tree, Historic Train Garden and “Cajun Night Before Christmas”
Carousel Gardens Train, Christmas Tree, Mr. Bingle and free marshmallows and hot chocolate
Holiday-themed Storyland
Iconic LED dinosaurs, flamingos and pirate ship
New exhibits such Toy Land, a 12-foot Dandelion Meadow Display and Winter Wonderland
“We heard the call of the community and challenged ourselves to step it up,” said Julie LaCour, Director of CITO/Special Events. “We know how important this event is to visitors, and we feel confident this year’s final product will make memories for folks that will last a lifetime.”
City Park Conservancy’s annual operating budget is largely reliant on self-generated activities, often weather dependent, and Celebration in the Oaks plays a key role in funding the Park’s continued maintenance and beauty each year, providing nearly 10% of the Park’s annual budget. The public’s investment and attendance at Celebration in the Oaks supports City Park’s success going forward.

130 Roosevelt Way New Orleans, LA, United States, Louisiana 70112
5PM
During the Christmas season, almost every local has made their way through the cold streets of downtown New Orleans to see the lobby of the romantic Roosevelt Hotel.
Faux tree stems wrapped in glimmering white lights stand tall as they hover over guests and nearly touch the ceiling chandeliers. Neighboring the branches are snow-white Christmas trees covered in red ribbons and ornaments. Both decors line the lobby in a perfect, picturesque pattern.
Hence, it isn't hard to understand why Travel and Leisure named the Roosevelt one of the 15 most festive hotels in the U.S. during the holiday season.
“Our hotel guests, New Orleanians and tourists from all over the world come to The Roosevelt at this time of year because it is truly the brightest, most brilliant place to bring out the holiday spirit,” Tod Chambers, general manager of the Roosevelt, said in a news release.
This year, the Roosevelt is bringing back its beloved Christmas tradition on Nov. 28, unveiling 1,600 feet of garland and 4,000 glass ornaments, the hotel announced Wednesday morning.
New Orleans Saints Executive Vice President and General Manager Mickey Loomis will be there to help switch on the ceremonial lighting of over 112,000 lights, the Roosevelt said in a news release.
The hotel will also be offering various options for holiday dining experiences and drink options at the Sazerac Bar and Teddy's Café.
The Sazerac Bar is bringing back their annual holiday drinks, including the Christmas Cookie — a sweet, vodka-based mixed drink — and the Candy Cane, a sugar drink featuring Rumple Minze.

Often called "the father of Art Deco," Romain de Tirtoff, known as Erté, was the central figure of the art and design evolution that emerged during the 1920s. The look featured stylized forms, geometric patterns, vibrant colors and sleek lines. Its influence flooded the world of art, fashion, architecture, furniture design, serviceware and more.

City of New Orleans Encourages Residents to Participate in the Annual Christmas Tree Recycling Program to Rebuild Wetlands
NEW ORLEANS — The City of New Orleans today reminded residents of the annual Christmas Tree Recycling Program to restore our wetlands. For over 25 years, this program has contributed to the restoration of the Bayou Sauvage Urban National Wildlife Refuge, while preventing them from being placed in landfills. The trees also create an important habitat for birds, fish, crabs, crawfish and shrimp.
"Every year, our Christmas trees bring light and happiness into our homes, but their significance goes far beyond spreading holiday joy," said Mayor LaToya Cantrell. "Recycling and placing these trees along our eroding coastline to help rebuild our wetlands will assist in the effort to protect our great city and state for generations to come. This robust tree recycling program is another example of how New Orleans will continue to lead in combatting the global climate crisis while promoting innovative opportunities to create a better, greener and more vibrant community. So far, recycled trees have restored an area of marsh equal to approximately 200 football fields. Thank you to our residents who continue to donate their Christmas trees year after year to enhance our coastline restoration efforts."
The program is coordinated by the City's Office of Resilience and Sustainability (ORS) and Department of Sanitation, in partnership with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and the Louisiana National Guard.
“We’re bringing attention to the Christmas Tree Recycling Program today because Black Friday and Small Business Saturday are popular days for New Orleanians to buy and decorate live Christmas trees,” said Director of Economic Development Jeff Schwartz. “The City can only accept trees without tinsel and flocking, and we ask residents to please consider this while decorating your tree.”
“While we are making great progress, protecting our natural resources remains more important than ever for New Orleans,” said ORS Deputy Chief Resilience Officer Greg Nichols. "The Christmas Tree Recycling Program is a great way for residents to get involved in the fight to restore our coast.”
Residents are encouraged to place their trees curbside for collection by Department of Sanitation contractors from Jan. 8 - 12, 2024. Trees cannot be flocked, and all ornamentation must be removed before placing them on the curb. Once they are collected, they will be sorted, bundled and airlifted by helicopter and dropped in targeted sections of the Bayou Sauvage Urban National Wildlife Refuge. The City’s goal is to collect 10,000 trees this year.
“The annual Christmas Tree Drop represents a long-standing partnership between the Louisiana National Guard and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service," said Louisiana National Guard, Chief Warrant Officer 3 Gabriel Ruiz. "It benefits the City of New Orleans and surrounding coastal environment, while also providing valuable training hours for our pilots and crewmembers of the 1st Assault Helicopter Battalion, 244th Aviation Regiment."
“I’d like to thank the residents of New Orleans for sharing their Christmas trees with us each year and making their contribution to coastal restoration," said USFWS Refuge Manager Shelley Stiaes. "Their tradition of donating Christmas trees is helping to rebuild our coastline and build habitat for wildlife."

After being ranked No. 7 in last week's CFP Rankings, Texas (12-1, 8-1 Big 12) moved up to No. 3 in today's rankings after its impressive 49-21 win over No. 18 Oklahoma State in Saturday's Big 12 Championship game.
Washington, as the higher seed, will be the home team and will occupy the home bench on the west sideline of the Caesars Superdome while Texas will occupy the visitor bench on the east sideline.
This year's Sugar Bowl will be a rematch of last year's Alamo Bowl – Washington posted a 27-20 victory over Texas in that game on Dec. 29, 2022. The two teams have met four other times with the Longhorns holding a 3-2 edge in the series. The first two meetings were a Texas sweep of a home-and-home series (35-21 in Austin on Oct. 5, 1974, and 28-10 in Seattle on Sept. 20, 1975). The other meetings also came in bowls with Washington winning 14-7 in the Sun Bowl on Dec. 22, 1979, and Texas winning 47-43 in the Holiday Bowl on Dec. 28, 2001.
Washington will be the first Pac-12 team to play in the Sugar Bowl while schools that are currently in the Big 12 have made 25 Sugar Bowl appearances with an all-time mark of 15-10 (.600). Washington and Texas are the 94th and 95th conference champions to play in the Sugar Bowl in its 90-year history.
The Huskies will be making their second appearance in the CFP – they lost to Alabama in a Playoff Semifinal following the 2016 season, the third year of the CFP. The Longhorns are making their CFP debut this year.
While Washington is making its Sugar Bowl debut, becoming the 52nd school to participate in the game, Texas will be making its fifth appearance in the Sugar Bowl. The Longhorns have an all-time mark of 2-2 in the Sugar Bowl with wins in their first (Jan. 1, 1948, 27-7 over Alabama) and last appearances (Jan. 1, 2021, 28-21 over Georgia).
This year marked the most wins (13) in Washington football's 107-year history. The Huskies have posted 15 10-win seasons. Texas, meanwhile, has recorded 25 seasons with 10 or more victories. The Longhorns' victory record is also 13, set in its 2005 and 2009 BCS Championship seasons.
Washington will be making its 40th overall bowl appearance with an all-time record of 19-19-1. This will be the 59th bowl appearance for Texas; it has an all-time bowl mark of 31-25-2.
Both coaches, Kalen DeBoer from Washington and Steve Sarkisian for Texas, will be making their Sugar Bowl debuts as head coaches – they will become the 103rd and 104th coaches to lead teams into the Sugar Bowl.
Washington will be playing its first game in the Superdome and in New Orleans as well as just its fourth game overall in the state of Louisiana. The Huskies defeated Tulane in Shreveport's Independence Bowl on Dec. 19, 1987, and lost a pair of games to LSU in Baton Rouge (1983 and 2012). Texas will be making its 18th trip to Louisiana – the Longhorns have a 10-6-1 record in the Pelican State with a 7-0-1 record in New Orleans against Tulane, a 1-4 mark against LSU in Baton Rouge and a 2-2 Sugar Bowl record. The Horns are 2-1 all-time in the Superdome (a win over Georgia and a loss to Virginia Tech in the Sugar Bowl and a 2002 win over Tulane).

LSU Athletics is proud to announce its year-long celebration of 100 Years in Tiger Stadium, highlighted by stadium upgrades, events, storytelling initiatives, and a season-long celebration throughout the 2024 campaign.
Tiger Stadium, one of America’s most iconic sporting venues, first opened its gates on Thanksgiving Day, November 27, 1924. Since then, the Tigers have won 450 contests in Death Valley, which has been home to two Heisman Trophy winners, four national championship teams, and 12 SEC title-winning squads.
Included in the celebration are several upgrades to Tiger Stadium, including a new videoboard and lighting system, as well as other upgrades designed to enhance the game day experience. Other events and celebrations will be announced throughout the year.
The 2024 home schedule features several marquee matchups, including home contests against Oklahoma, UCLA, and Alabama. Information on the full 2024 schedule and season tickets will be announced in the coming weeks.
One of the most legendary stadiums in all of college football, Tiger Stadium has been called “the best place in the world to watch a sporting event” by ESPN and “the pound-for-pound king of noise in college football.”
Entering its centennial season in 2024, Tiger Stadium has been a cornerstone of LSU Athletics and the Louisiana community for almost a century, hosting numerous NFL superstars, Heisman Trophy winners, and Hall of Famers since its opening in 1924. It serves as a sporting, cultural, and commercial hub for LSU Athletics, which contributes an estimated $500 million of economic activity for the state of Louisiana annually.

JennSamuels@gmail.com
NEW ORLEANS, LA, Calling all King Cake Enthusiasts. Jennifer Samuels, owner of King Cake Hub, announced multiple parties to celebrate the beginning of the 2024 Carnival season.
King Cake Hub and Zony Mash will host the second annual King Cake Monarch Pageant which will be part of our Countdown to Carnival Party and held in the tap room at 3940 Thalia Street. The party will be on Friday, January 5, 2024 from 9pm until midnight when our reigning Monarch Katrina Waters will pass the crown to the 2024 King Cake Monarch who will cut and share the first slices of king cake with all their royal subjects. The pageant will be emceed by our long time friends Prof. Carl Nivale and Grand Marshal Marty Graw and will also feature appearances by several dance krewes including El Lucha Krewe, Sassyracs and Voulez Krewe. DJ Liz will be onstage playing Carnival and New Orleans music to help get us all in the mood for that first slice of king cake and all the fun that is Carnival!
The King Cake Monarch will also be invited back to celebrate the opening of the King Cake Hub at 1464 S. Broad. The doors open and the party starts again welcome customers for the first day of the King Cake Hub, Josh Paxton will be playing Carnival favorites in the beer garden as well as HEY Coffee Co selling coffee and Paw Paws Donuts serving their amazing cream filled donuts.
This will be King Cake Hub’s sixth year selling a wide assortment of the best king cakes you have ever and never tasted and will include a variety of more than 70 cakes from Bittersweet, Breads on Oak, Brennan’s, Bywater Bakery, Caluda’s, Cannata’s, Caywood and Randazzo Bakery, District, Hi Do Bakery, Gracious, Joe Gambino’s Bakery, NOCCA, Sugar Love, Nolita, Mad Matter Bakery, Marguerite’s King Cakes, La Vie En Rose and more as well as a number of king cake related sweets and other merchandise.
Many purists blame people eating king cake out of season for all kinds of calamities from hurricanes to dreary Saints seasons. While our extensive research can’t substantiate those claims we can conclusively say that king cake causes maximum joy when shared during the festivities of the Carnival season. So much so that we can’t wait a minute longer that necessary to start eating and sharing with all our fans.
King Cake Hub will be open daily from 8:30am until 6:00pm daily beginning January 6 through Lundi Gras. Delivery will be available through D’livery and is scheduled to start the week of 1/8. King Cake Hub will only be operating out of the Zony Mash location to ensure our loyal customers get that wonderful overwhelming experience that is King Cake Hub! Stay tuned for more info via King Cake Hub’s social media sites on Facebook and Instagram.

Professor Carl Nivale
Welcoming the new marching krewe, Krewe Mosaïque! They have their first parade on January 13th, from Armstrong Park to Ursuline Convent. Your favorite Professor and Grand Marshal Marty Graw look forward to being there!
#Carnival2024 #MardiGras2024 #OurCarnivalHeritage #krewemosaique
https://www.axios.com/.../new-krewe-mardi-gras-parade...
A new walking krewe will debut for Mardi Gras 2024, marching through the French Quarter on Jan. 13.
Why it matters: The event fills in an otherwise parade-free weekend during the weekslong celebration of Carnival in New Orleans.
What's happening: Krewe Mosaïque will march for 12 blocks from Armstrong Park to the Ursuline Convent for the first time.
- This year's krewe will max out at 200 members, and organizers are putting an emphasis on DIY elements, handmade throws and cultural or historical relevance to the city.
- The idea stems from the krewe's founding members preference for DIY costuming and contraption-building.
What she's saying: "Everything is bright and colorful and very unique unto themselves, but when we come together, it's this beautiful experience, like a mosaic," says Krewe Mosaïque founder Terese Aiello.
