Convention Center Boulevard Reopens
|
The entire new roadway of Convention Center Boulevard, from Poydras to Henderson Streets has reopened in time for the new year after Entergy finished the installation of new power poles. Originally, the boulevard was scheduled to be closed to vehicular traffic until Tuesday, December 31. The improved boulevard features one lane in each direction with a cobblestone safety strip dividing the two lanes.
“We are excited to announce an earlier-than-anticipated reopening of Convention Center Boulevard to motorists,” said Michael Sawaya, President of the New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center. “This is another a major milestone in our $557 million capital improvement plan to make us more competitive for meetings and events and much more appealing to our residents. Our thanks to Entergy and Landis Construction for getting this done sooner than expected.”
The new Convention Center Boulevard, which began construction in September 2018, was the result of several extensive traffic studies that took into consideration the needs of event attendees, cruise ship passengers, warehouse district residents and businesses, commuters to the CBD and port freight traffic. The final plan was reviewed and approved through the normal city permitting process.
With the completion of the improved city side of Convention Center Boulevard, crews will continue work constructing the 7.5 acre Public Park that runs the length of the building.
Key design elements of the park include a tree-lined pedestrian promenade, covered terraces, outdoor event spaces, interactive water features, green walls, shaded communal gathering areas, and public art. The park is currently scheduled to be completed in the fall of 2020. For a list of major construction milestones, visit
http://advantagenola.com/major-milestones/
.
The newly opened Convention Center Boulevard will continue to serve visitors to the 2019 NOLA ChristmasFest, which continues at the New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center through December 31, 2019. NOLA Christmasfest is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., with special hours of 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on New Year’s Eve.

Exhibition to explore local sports history through 20 essential stories
“Crescent City Sport: Stories of Courage and Change” opens
|
WHO: The Historic New Orleans Collection
WHAT: “Crescent City Sport: Stories of Courage and Change,” an exhibition featuring original objects
WHEN:
December 27–March 8, 2020
Tuesday–Saturday, 9:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m.
Sunday, 10:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m.
WHERE: 520 Royal St., in the French Quarter
HOW: Admission is free.
WHY:
Stories are central to our love of sports. In a new exhibition from The Historic New Orleans Collection, 20 stories feature bitter rivalries, shocking upsets and unlikely heroes and reveal how these moments are woven into the collective memory and identity of the local community.
“Crescent City Sport: Stories of Courage and Change”
opens Friday, Nov. 22, and explores sporting moments since the end of the American Civil War that have mirrored or instigated broader social and economic change in New Orleans. Curator Mark Cave noticed the vital role sports have played in the city’s slow—and often reluctant—progress toward inclusivity, and how major sporting events have long been a cornerstone of the city’s tourism economy.
Locals and visitors alike will quickly recognize some of the stories, such as the epic bouts of heavyweight champion John L. Sullivan, the founding of the Sugar Bowl in the midst of the Great Depression and the creation of the New Orleans Saints. The exhibition also covers horseracing, basketball, cycling, sailing, roller derby and more. Visitors will see the original Sugar Bowl trophy, a plaster cast of Sullivan’s arm, the Saints’ 2010 Super Bowl trophy and hundreds of original photographs and other objects from public and private collections throughout the community.
“Crescent City Sport” will be on view through Sunday, March 8, 2020. Admission is free, and the exhibition is open Tuesday–Saturday, 9:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m. and Sunday, 10:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m. Free activity guides will be available for younger visitors.
“Crescent City Sport: Stories of Courage and Change” is presented by The Historic New Orleans Collection and sponsored by The Gayle and Tom Benson Charitable Foundation

|
NEW ORLEANS —
Upcoming show times include:

In the SoFAB Kitchen with Firdaws Ashiru
|
On December 28 from 1-2 pm, The Rouses Culinary Innovation Center at the Southern Food & Beverage Museum will host Firdaws Ashiru, Founder of Fresh Hibiscus Tea, for a culinary demonstration.
"Ever since I was a kid, my grandmother has always had issues with her knees. I would watch her move slowly across the living room with each step being a painful encounter. Her face said it all. My grandmother always had soda in the house, and she would drink it daily. Little did we know that this was a major part of her knee issue. In 2010, we decided it was time to get treatment for my grandmother. Later on, the doctor told us that she had arthritis on her knees and that the carbon from soda had eroded her meniscus ( a rubbery cartilage between your shinbone and thighbone) over time. This was news to me. I watched my grandmother go through the surgery and therapy and from that day on, I made a conscious effort to avoid carbonated beverages and find better alternatives. I wanted to find a drink that would taste great and serve as a smooth transition away from fizzy drinks. So, I dug deep into my childhood where hibiscus tea was drunk for various purposes. I did some research on it and found out that the hibiscus flower has many health benefits such as reducing cramps, and serving as a form of antioxidants.
"In 2017, I started Fresh Hibiscus Tea. Our goal is to share the multipurpose use of hibiscus and it benefits. The flower itself originates from tropical Nigeria and can be used as a ceremonial drink, for baking, for better digestion, or simply for relaxation. Fresh Hibiscus Tea serves as a smooth transition into other healthier beverages with our tropical taste, vibrant color, and pineapple or gingery scent (depending on the flavor you get). Our purpose is to provide quality products and support local companies and causes. Our product is low in sugar, calories, and sodium, with zero cholesterol and zero fat. Fresh Hibiscus Tea is for those who are conscious of staying healthy. Taste it. Feel it.”
Participation in the demonstration is free and open to the public with museum admission.
