Exhibition Celebrates the Social Aid and Pleasure Clubs of New Orleans
|
Assembled in collaboration with more than 30 community partners and club members, the exhibition offers an intimate look at New Orleans street parades while also providing historical context of the tradition. Black mutual aid societies were founded in the 19th century to support African Americans and Afro-Creoles at a time when they were denied many social services, and second line parades are one of their most enduring legacies. Full of color, music, footwork, friends and neighbors, second line parades provide a weekly physical and symbolic gathering place for Black history and expression.
In the exhibition, displayed on the third level of THNOC’s Tricentennial Wing at 520 Royal Street in the French Quarter, parade regalia—from full suits to elaborate baskets and fans—gives viewers an up-close look at the unique artistry of second line parades. Images from a dozen contemporary photographers, including Judy Cooper, whose vision inspired the origin of this show, wrap around three gallery walls to re-create a second line from start to finish.
. COVID-19 safety protocols—facemasks, timed ticketing and limited gallery capacity to ensure social distancing—will be in place,

Pieces of History:
Ten Years of Decorative
Arts Fieldwork
|
April 17–September 5, 2021
Tuesday–Saturday, 9:30 a.m–4:30 p.m.; Sunday, 10:30 a.m–4:30 p.m.
520 Royal Street, Tricentennial Wing, 1st Floor
Free ticketed admission
Decorative arts objects—furniture, home furnishings, and the tools of daily life—carry the stories of the people who made and used them. The Historic New Orleans Collection’s exhibition Pieces of History showcases the Decorative Arts of the Gulf South (DAGS) project’s efforts to preserve and share these stories.
DAGS began in 2011, when New Orleans attorney and avid antiques collector Paul Haygood (1943–2015) established the Classical Institute of the South (CIS) to document decorative arts objects made or used in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama before 1865. Part of THNOC since 2015—and renamed DAGS this year—the project’s summer fellows travel to historic homes across the Gulf South to achieve this mission.
Pieces of History celebrates DAGS’s first decade by exhibiting significant objects cataloged by fieldwork teams alongside research photographs taken for the database. Field stories from the project’s alumni highlight memorable experiences and meaningful objects from the summers the fellows spent exploring the historic houses of the Gulf South. The exhibition also examines trade networks, cultural values, and the brutal system of enslavement that produced the Gulf South’s wealth.
Pieces of History is now open Tuesday–Saturday, 9:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m. and Sunday, 10:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m. Admission is free, but we suggest preordering tickets for timed entry. THNOC is adhering to all safety guidelines; visitors are required to wear face masks and observe social distancing limits.
The Historic New Orleans Collection gratefully acknowledges the sponsors of the exhibition, Nell H. and Fredric J. Figge and Mrs. Frank W. Masson.

Here are some of the wines with info from Brazo's on the producers we have in the store
Alma4 Blanc de Blanc 2014 - 4 friends met at Liceo Agrícola & Enológico School in Mendoza Argentina when they were 17 years old and they eventually formed Alma 4. Two years later, the quartet vinified 300 bottles of Methode Tradicional wine in 1998, their first year of production. Over 20 years later, they are still making wine together and they currently produce 5 sparkling cuvees from parcels located in the Uco Valley ranging from 1300-1550 meters above sea level.
Viná Maitia Aupa Pipeno - This wine is a blend of 80% Pais and 20% Carignan from the southern Maule region of Chile and is made in an old style called Pipeño. The wine is light in color with bright notes of crushed raspberry, wild strawberry, and rose petals that lead into underlying hints of dried herbs, mint leaves, fennel and thyme. This fruit driven, easy drinking wine with a bit of animale has fresh acid with low tannin and can be enjoyed with a slight chill.
Gen del Alma, Chenin Blanc Jijiji Tunuyán - This hand harvested, single vineyard wine is 100% Chenin Blanc from Tunuyan within the Uco Valley. The nose has multiple layers with notes of orange blossom, daffodil, lemon, quince, cardamon, apricot, and wax bean that leads into a racy and vibrant palette with generous acidity. Grapefruit, green apple, and lemon shine with a touch of salinity that leads to a fresh, bright finish.
Cara Sur Tinto 2018 - This hand harvested wine is a blend of Bonarda and Barbera from a single vineyard in the Calingasta Valley. The wine predominantly shows notes of strawberry syrup, almond, and cocoa with secondary notes of walnuts, cranberry, and baking spices. The palate is rich with red fruits and strong tannins that lead to a full bodied finish.
Rogue Vine Jamon Jamon (Orange) 2020 - This 100% skin fermented Moscatel is from Guarilihue region of Itata. The nose shows orange peel, white flowers, peach, and orange blossom with savory undertones of sage and toasted almonds. The palate shows notes of quince and marzipan with honeysuckle and a hint of black pepper spice. The finish is held long by the bright acid of the wine.
Rogue Vine Pipeño Tinto 2020 - This is a field blend of old vine, hand harvested grapes consisting of 60 % Cinsault and 30% Pais and 10% Carignan. The nose is lifted and shows bright red fruits of raspberry and strawberry with rose petals and hints of fresh forest floor. The palate is defined by its light tannin and acid structure that keeps the wine light, accentuating the fruit and leading to a soft finish.
Stella Cranita - Joanna Foster and Ernesto Catena started Stella Crinita in 2002, taking over some family land over 3000 feet up in the Vista Flores subzone of the Uco Valley in Mendoza. Once settled, they ceased all use of pesticides and herbicides and began the slow work of implementing organic, biodynamic (certified in 2012) and regenerative viticulture practices. The wines ferment naturally from a vigorous population of endemic yeasts in clay, concrete egg, stainless, and old wood, and even with no additions of so2, are known to be remarkably resilient. They are lively, terroir laden natural wines that bring Uco's calcareous soils and cool climate into sharp, thirst quenching relief. The first go round is quite limited on these, but we are incredibly stoked that our pals at Brazos continue to find exciting gems like Stella Crinita in South America. Wines available, Petit Verdot, Barbera, Omaggio Viognier Pet Nat

Newcomb Dance Company, Department of Theatre and Dance at Tulane University in partnership with New Orleans Airlift present The Body Remembers; A collection of site-specific dances choreographed by Leslie Scott and Diogo de Lima to be performed at Music Box Village.
Each dance piece offers an exciting and moving exploration on themes of absence in New Orleans during our pandemic reality, strength and overcoming adversity, memory, healing and ritual. Musicians Neal Todten and Logan Schutts will craft sonic landscapes using the one-of-a-kind “musical houses” that comprise the Music Box Village, adding great dimension to the visuals with their live accompaniment. The performance also features Kelly Harris-DeBerry’s new poem, “The Body Never Forgets”. Harris-DeBerry is a New Orleans poet, and writer.

NUNSENSE Musical TONIGHT!
FINAL WEEKEND, shows thru Sunday!
the perfect rainy day activity!
|
NUNSENSE is the hilarious musical farce about a convent of Nuns staging a fundraiser so they can bury the last four nuns of their order who died of botulism in an unfortunate convent cooking accident (and who are temporarily being stored in the freezer!). The Little Sisters of Hoboken (well, what's left of them) are Reverend Mother Regina, a former circus performer; Sister Mary Hubert, the Mistress of Novices; a streetwise nun from Brooklyn named Sister Robert Anne; Sister Mary Leo, a novice who is a wannabe ballerina; and the delightfully wacky Sister Mary Amnesia, the nun who lost her memory when a crucifix fell on her head. Featuring side splitting laughs, show stopping song & dance numbers, an audience quiz, and comic surprises, this show has become an international phenomenon. Family friendly!

NATIONAL CHEESEBALL DAY
April 17th kicks off National Cheeseball Day recognizes a party food that can sometimes be the centerpiece of a spread. There are two ways a cheeseball can be served:
- A cheese spread comes in the shape of a ball served with crackers, most often around Christmas in the U.S. This cheeseball is commonly made with softened cream cheese and other ingredients.
- Cheese puffs, which is a puffed corn snack, coated with a mixture of cheese or cheese flavored powders. Cheese puffs are manufactured by extruding heated corn dough through a die that forms the particular shape, most likely a ball shape.
No matter which one you celebrate, both make for terrific snacking

NATIONAL CRAWFISH DAY
National Crawfish Day on April 17th celebrates one of the South’s most iconic foods. Each year the mudbug brings out not only a desire for newspaper-covered picnic tables but a language all its own.
A smaller, fresh-water cousin to the lobster, crawfish provide a unique flavor to many homegrown Southern dishes. Baked or boiled, crawfish is usually seasoned with a distinctive brand of southern heat. One particularly popular way to serve crawfish is a boil, paper towels required.
If you’ve never been to a crawfish boil, you don’t understand the meaning of digging into your food. An unbridled desire overcomes you as the aroma hits you to devour a massive pile of corn, potatoes, and sausage. And let’s not forget a variety of shellfish that go by names such as ditchbug, crayfish, crawdad, crawpappy, among other amusements.

For Steamboat Saturday I want to revisit something mentioned in a previous post – that being one of the more unique design features of some riverboats: the ability to lower the upper portion of the vessel’s twin smokestacks in order to pass below bridges.
Rising high above the top deck and pilot house, the smoke belching from the smokestacks was also often the first indication to waiting passengers that their boat was arriving. Even on the most ornate riverboats of the Gilded Age, the towering smokestacks with their decorated central rail supports and finial-like tops could be seen from far away. But their primary purpose was not as an early warning system.
Riverboats transporting cotton had to be extremely careful that sparks and hot embers from the boat’s engines, vented by the smokestacks, did not land on the stacked cotton bales and ignite, sending the cargo and the vessel up in flames. For this reason, the smokestacks were often thirty feet or higher to release the smoke and embers high enough into the air so that they would trail behind the boat and fall harmlessly into the river. The majority of the time it worked, but there are instances where stiff winds blew hot embers back onto the riverboat with disastrous consequences.
What is often overlooked is that because of the height of the smokestacks, passing beneath low bridges often limited the range and route of many steamboats unless their smokestacks could be lowered to accommodate safe passage, as illustrated below. With sturdy hinges on the aft side, the smokestacks could be unlocked and gently lowered with ropes and poles. Once clear, the process could be reversed and the boat safely underway.
This photograph from 1922 shows the packet boat Homer Smith, completed in 1914 at the Howard Shipyards in Jeffersonville, Indiana, for the Security Steamboat Company. Its primary trade was the Louisville – Cincinnati route on the Ohio River, but she also made trips between Pittsburgh and New Orleans during Mardi Gras as an excursion boat. She was also one of the first steamboats to have her decks outlined in electric lights. She burned in 1931 under mysterious circumstances while moored in Pittsburgh

When they were open 24-hours a day in the French Quarter, early morning coffee at either Morning Call or Café du Monde almost always brings out an interesting cast of characters. This photograph dates from 1939 and certainly offers multiple conversation starters.
The fellow on the far left is struggling to get through his beignet, perhaps hoping the sugar and caffeine rush will get him through the rest of his day, how ever long that may be. The elderly couple seated next to him flanking their young charge are clearly enjoying the end of their evening, dressed to the nines having spent the evening with far less impact than the young man on the left. Several servers with their traditional white paper hats are in the background, both inside and outside.
The large silver bowls set about the countertop hold sugar for patrons to sweeten their coffee. Sadly, they have disappeared from present day use due to health concerns. The self-serve powdered sugar shakers are still available at Morning Call while Café du Monde insists on dumping an inordinate amount of powdered sugar on their beignets.

Socially-Distant Sidewalk Signing w/ Jason Berry
|
Join us Sunday, April 18th from 1 pm - 2:30 pm in front our shop for a socially-distant sidewalk signing! Jason Berry will be signing his book, "City of a Million Dreams: A History of New Orleans at Year 300".
Masks required.
In 2015, the beautiful jazz funeral in New Orleans for composer Allen Toussaint coincided with a debate over removing four Confederate monuments. Mayor Mitch Landrieu led the ceremony, attended by living legends of jazz, music aficionados, politicians, and everyday people. The scene captured the history and culture of the city in microcosm--a city legendary for its noisy, complicated, tradition-rich splendor. In City of a Million Dreams, Jason Berry delivers a character-driven history of New Orleans at its tricentennial. Chronicling cycles of invention, struggle, death, and rebirth, Berry reveals the city's survival as a triumph of diversity, its map-of-the-world neighborhoods marked by resilience despite hurricanes, epidemics, fires, and floods.
Berry orchestrates a parade of vibrant personalities, from the founder Bienville, a warrior emblazoned with snake tattoos; to Governor William C. C. Claiborne, General Andrew Jackson, and Pere Antoine, an influential priest and secret agent of the Inquisition; Sister Gertrude Morgan, a street evangelist and visionary artist of the 1960s; and Michael White, the famous clarinetist who remade his life after losing everything in Hurricane Katrina. The textured profiles of this extraordinary cast furnish a dramatic narrative of the beloved city, famous the world over for mysterious rituals as people dance when they bury their dead.
Jason Berry achieved prominence for his reporting on the Catholic Church crisis in Lead Us Not Into Temptation (1992), a book used in many newsrooms. He has been widely interviewed in the national media, with many appearances on Nightline, Oprah, ABC and CNN. USA Today called Berry “the rare investigative reporter whose scholarship, compassion and ability to write with the poetic power of Robert Penn Warren are in perfect balance.”

Jazz Festing in Place starts on Thursday 4/22
|
A few details to note, some of which were not released on the first version of the cubes:
- Many rare recordings from the very first Jazz Fest in 1970, including a new addition-- Louis Cottrell!
- Miles Davis 1986!
- James Taylor 2009!
- Ella Fitzgerald and Steve Wonder's surprise 1977 collaboration returns (by popular demand)!
- Charles Mingus 1977!
- Richie Havens 1991 - this is an incredible set on the Gentilly Stage that was one of Richie's own favorites of his entire career. Richie's estate has worked with the Archive of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation to get a perfect version of the audio. Richie Havens fans, you're in for a treat.
- Dave Bartholomew Band with Fats Domino 1999 - this band reunited many great players from througout Dave's career.
- Juanita Brooks was a great New Orleans jazz, theater, and gospel singer who played in "One Mo Time" for years. She toured the world and played Jazz Fest many times but was rarely recorded. The Archive of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation found and digitized a recording from 2000. We're excited to bring her back to listeners.
- Second Thursday is often a day featuring jam bands at Jazz Fest and we're giving a nod to that with Widespread Panic with the Dirty Dozen Brass Band as guests, The Radiators, and Bonerama, among others.
- Eubie Blake 1977, aboard the riverboat President. Eubie was 90 years old at the time of this recording -- he was born in 1887!
- Allen Toussaint in his final Jazz Fest performance (2015)
We can't wait to Fest in Place
with you next week!

Farmstand Live Event Comes To Shrine On Airline—Local Food Meets
Local Music
|
Taking place on the two Saturdays of what are traditionally Jazz Fest weekends (April 24 and May 1, 2021), the first two events of Farmstand Live will take place at the Shrine on Airline and feature live performances by some of New Orleans’ critically acclaimed musicians; prepared dinners from the city’s finest restaurants; and farm fresh produce boxes from Crescent City Farmer’s Market.
Farmstand Entertainment is the brainchild of Emily Vanlandingham, founder/chef of Locally Preserved, New Orleans first all-natural food manufacturer. Vanlandingham, who recently earned a master’s degree in food business from the Culinary Institute of America, witnessed the economic downfall of New Orleans during the pandemic, just as she was completing the last year of her studies. “When the pandemic carried on for months on end, and I was working on my final project, I knew I needed to pivot,” says Vanlandingham. “I set out to find a way to change the distribution models of New Orleans’ most profitable sectors. We rely heavily on our incredible live music, on our renowned dining scene, and on our year-round farming. Farmstand Entertainment, and specifically, Farmstand Live, is a way to combine the three and pump money back into the economy.”
The ticketed drive in experience for April 24 beginning at 4 p.m. features Dumpstaphunk (for their official Where Do We Go from Here? album release party), Smoke n Bones, and SOUL Brass Band with prepared boxed dinners by Cochon Butcher, Justine, Charcuterie of NOLA, and Addis NOLA. (Optional Bywater Bakery dessert will be available for an additional $10 and cocktails, beer, and wine will be available for purchase.)
Saturday May 1 will featured Jon Cleary ad the Absolute Monster Gentlemen, George Porter Jr. and the Runnin; Pardoners, and Honey Island Swamp Band with food from La Petite Grocery, NOLA Charcuterie, Luncheon NOLA, and Cochon Butcher (all served in boxes with vegetarian options available). Dee-Lightful Cupcakes will e available for an additional $7 and alcohol will be available for purchase.
Ticket packages start at $90 per person. For more information, visit here. Note: All people in vehicles must have a ticket and tickets will not be sold at the gate. There is a minimum of 2 people per car and a maximum of 8 people total.
Presale tickets go on sale Thursday, April 1 and General Public tickets go on sale Monday, April 5. All shows are rain or shine. Farmstand Live will take place at the Shrine on Airline, the 10,000-seat stadium located at 6000 Airline Drive in Metairie, Louisiana.

“The Slowest Second Line on Earth” – Turtles ‘On Parade’ & Brunch Celebration
|
Since 2015, on every Saturday of Mother’s Day weekend, the “Krewe of Turtles” has taken a festive stroll around the French Quarter and back to their “watering” hole, New Orleans style, on ten custom-festooned wagons in a parade led by a bag-pipe procession and police motorcade, all forming “the slowest second line on earth.” This year, due to COVID restrictions, the turtles are taking a break from their annual trip around the “quarters” and will instead be ON PARADE – and their customary decorative floats will be displayed for viewing in the Brennan’s courtyard from 9 AM – 6 PM on Saturday, May 8, 2021. The tradition will “slowly” continue with a blessing at 10 AM from Monsignor Nalty and at 11 AM, a pardon like no other — a clever new tale, penned each year as a poem by State District Court Judge Lauren Lemmon.
In honor of the turtles, Brennan’s is rolling out the green carpet, literally, for a special Breakfast at Brennan’s offering with added festive green drinks, special Chocolate Turtles for dessert, and bundles of balloons – making a picture perfect backdrop for a photo-op with Mom.
Brunch will feature socially-distant seatings from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Signature dishes such as Brennan’s Eggs Sardou and Eggs Benedict promise to warm the heart and please the palate. Notably, Turtle Soup has been taken off the menu on this day, in respect for the event’s honorees.
Guests can ‘pace’ themselves throughout the day with a special Happy Hour from 2 PM to 6 PM, featuring celebratory cocktails including The Topsy Turvy and the vibrantly green-hued Grasshopper.
