More details on citywide COVID-19 restrictions and guidelines can be viewed at
The NOPD announced a change in the hours of scheduled closure for parts of the French Quarter area as part of its enforcement plan during the upcoming Mardi Gras weekend and holiday, amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
NOPD will be “all hands on deck” throughout the five-day period, patrolling throughout the city for those who are in violation of city mandates regarding illegal gatherings and closure of all bars in the city, including those that obtained a state license to operate as a restaurant. While restaurants will remain open and can serve alcohol, to-go alcohol is banned during this period, as well as package liquor sales within the boundaries of the French Quarter.

“With the assistance of our law enforcement partners at the Louisiana State Police and the Orleans Parish Sheriff Office, we have a plan that will help us have a scaled back and safe Mardi Gras,” NOPD Superintendent Shaun Ferguson said today during a press conference held at NOPD Headquarters. “When we hear of a large crowd reported, with the additional resources of our law enforcement partners at our disposal, we will be able to flex our deployment and deal with those crowds as they gather – not just on Bourbon Street, but anywhere in the city,” he said.

Beginning today (Friday, February 12, 2021) and running through 3:00 a.m. on February 17, 2021, the following enforcement actions will be in place:
  • There will be limited access to Bourbon Street from Canal Street to Dumaine Street. Only residents, shop attendees, restaurants patrons and hotel guests will be allowed access to these areas during this time, but no loitering will be allowed.
  • There will be limited access to the 500 and 600 blocks of Frenchmen Street. Only residents, shop attendees, restaurants patrons and hotel guests will be allowed access to these areas during this time, but no loitering will be allowed.
  • On Mardi Gras Day (February 16), the aforementioned sections of Bourbon Street and Frenchmen Street will be closed from 7 a.m. to 3 a.m. on February 17.
  • Starting today (February 12), all bars citywide are closed for the five-day period, including those that have temporary licenses to operate as restaurants. Any businesses found to be in violation of this order will be closed on the spot.
  • Decatur Street will be closed between Dumaine and Toulouse streets.
  • The area directly under the elevated Interstate 10 on North Claiborne Avenue from St. Louis Street to St. Bernard Avenue will be fenced to discourage gatherings. The travel lanes of North Claiborne Avenue will remain open for traffic. Enhanced patrols with NOPD and Louisiana State Police will monitor this area.
Ferguson urged citizens and visitors to New Orleans to not attend any large gatherings in the city during the Mardi Gras holidays, as to not spread the COVID-19 virus. He also urged anyone who sees a large crowd or gathering in the city to call 311 to report the incident.

“Everyone has a stake in the response to COVID-19,” Ferguson said. “We need our citizens and visitors to exercise personal responsibility. We must work together to keep each other safe. Please adhere to the established guidelines and avoid large gatherings. By doing so, hopefully by next year we will have a handle on Covid-19 and will be able to have something closer to a normal celebration.”

Mystery in Motion: Masking and Spirituality in Mardi Gras
Every Wednesday, from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. on February 24 through March 31, teaching artist Ausettua AmorAmenkum will lead a dance course called African Dance in New Orleans: Online Course at the Louisiana State Museum [link.mediaoutreach.meltwater.com]. The six-week course will explore African traditions and influences on New Orleans culture and dance. To register visit the course’s event page .
On Thursday, February 25 at 6 p.m., you can join A Virtual Evening with the Curators: Mystery in Motion: African American Masking and Spirituality in Mardi Gras [link.mediaoutreach.meltwater.com] via Zoom as the guest curators share highlights from the exhibition and insights into the curatorial process with Louisiana State Museum historian Karen Leathem. Registration is available on the event page
Mardi Gras exhibit opens; virtual events planned
The Louisiana State Museum, working in collaboration with the renowned Musée du Quai Branly–Jacques Chirac in Paris, has announced the opening of a new exhibition, Mystery in Motion: African American Masking and Spirituality in Mardi Gras

In addition to a stunning exhibit in the Presbytere, there also are several virtual programs offered in connection with the program.

This new exhibition inside the Presbytère on Jackson Square examines the direct influence of multicultural spirituality within the carnival traditions of Black New Orleanians. Due to the pandemic, you will not find many Black masking Indians on the streets this carnival season, but you will see their elaborate suits and learn about their use and inspiration inside the museum’s galleries. The exhibit will be on display in time for the Mardi Gras weekend, from February 13, 2021, through November 28, 2021, and will serve as the centerpiece of the museum’s planned programming to celebrate the 2021 carnival season.
“Mystery in Motion is a groundbreaking exhibition highlighting the vibrant carnival traditions of the Black community in New Orleans and it offers an excellent way to celebrate Mardi Gras safely during this current pandemic,” said Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser.
Mystery in Motion guest curators Kim Vaz-Deville, Ph.D., and Ron Bechet of Xavier University of Louisiana explore spirituality in Mardi Gras through the presentation of more than two dozen Black masking Indian suits, carnival costumes, and masking objects produced in New Orleans, juxtaposed with extraordinary African artifacts that are representative of the cultures, religions, and artistry that influenced their creation. These exceptional African objects will be on loan from the collections of the Musée du Quai Branly–Jacques Chirac and Southern University at New Orleans.
“There is so much happening on Mardi Gras day, it is impossible to take in all the sights, sounds, and experiences. The intent of the exhibition is to offer an opportunity to contemplate the spiritual dimensions of African American Mardi Gras masking that are hidden in plain view,” said Kim Vaz-Deville, Ph.D.

Additionally, several virtual events will be held in conjunction with the exhibition that are free and open to the public:

Every Wednesday, from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. on February 24 through March 31, teaching artist Ausettua AmorAmenkum will lead a dance course called African Dance in New Orleans: Online Course at the Louisiana State Museum [link.mediaoutreach.meltwater.com]. The six-week course will explore African traditions and influences on New Orleans culture and dance. To register visit the course’s event page [link.mediaoutreach.meltwater.com].

YARDI GRAS
CARNIVAL EXPERIENCE

The Yard on Frenchmen presents:
YARDI GRAS 2021, the ultimate CARNIVAL EXPERIENCE!

This year Carnival may look a little different. That is why we pioneered a wild 5 day affair, introducing traditional and re-imagined parade route culture to our guests at The Yard.

Beginning with an immersive restaurant atmosphere, the Courtyard and interior dining room will seamlessly transition into an explosion of Yardi Gras throws and wild booty-popping presentations, including an array of characters that aren't your usual suspects. Guests let loose and party the weekend away.

This signature event features a daily CRAWFISH BOIL, indulgent food menu, Yardi Gras drink specials, a variety of special guests and "parade route" inspired surprises, with music to keep the party going from open to close.

DJ Vladimir will be on the decks each day keeping the Yardi Gras vibe alive with Partygoers dancing in their seats and out in the street.
Each night the ACE Brass band, featuring a full (St. Augustine inspired) drum line will be playing in the courtyard. You may not see a single parade this year, but you won't miss the experience if you go to the Yardi Gras!

Gymnastics Goes 198.050 Against No. 1 Florida

The second-ranked LSU Gymnastics team (4-1, 3-1 SEC) earned a 198-plus team score in a thriller against No. 1 Florida (5-0, 4-0 SEC) Friday night inside the PMAC.
The Tigers scored a 198.050 in the loss to the Gators, who scored a 198.150. The scores marked the best in the country this year.
LSU used 13 scores of 9.925 to earn the 13th-best score in school history. The Tigers earned a 49.600 on vault and 49.550 on bars and beam. All three marked season highs for the squad.
"That was a heck of a meet and a heavy-weight boxing match," LSU Gymnastics head coach Jay Clark said. "I'm proud of our kids. They fought toe to toe with probably one of the best Florida teams I've ever seen. I have nothing but positive things to say about the way they fought and left it all out there tonight."

As everyone knows Mardi Gras looks very different this year - houses in New Orleans have turned into floats and king cakes are flying off shelves! People are celebrating in pods and circles without parades and public revelry, which have been put on hold until 2022.
But, the music plays on with this special livestream event! Yep, the band is back together again for the first time and safely, in almost a year. This event features special guest, the fabulous and talented, Marcella Simien, y'all!
This will be a high quality production with a three camera shoot and a Backstage Pass w/interviews with the group before the concert.

We Can't Parade ...
But we can still Mardi Gras!
Take a ride on the wild side… where our homes and businesses become the floats and parade watchers become the riders.

My free YouTube Mardi Gras series returns for the second year with new episodes, starting with a segment on house floats—ARTHUR HARDY’S GUIDE TO MARDI GRAS.
Mardi Gras 2021
Krewe of House Floats Westbank
Carnival season 2021 will look different without our traditional Mardi Gras parades. In true New Orleans fashion, our residents formed a new Krewe ¨Krewe of House Floats¨ to keep the celebration going and to help our fellow residents who have been affected by the cancellation of our traditional parades. Krewe of House Floats is a new way to celebrate our Mardi Gras traditions in a safe social distance way but with all the creativity, music and fun that is characteristic of NOLA. With over 5000 Houses participating, the Krewe of House Floats has crowned Big Freedia as The Grand Marshal of the inaugural Krewe of House Floats! We are including the list of house floats located on the Westbank so you can plan your socially distanced tour any time between February 4 and Mardi Gras Day February 16. Come out and celebrate this new tradition and make a donation to help Krewe of House Floats help those who work hard every year to make the ¨greatest FREE show on Earth¨ possible

 [ in-sey-shuh-buhl ]

DEFINITION:
1. (adjective) not satiable; incapable of being satisfied or appeased

Antonym(s): satisfiable, quenchable, controllable
EXAMPLE: The student had an insatiable hunger for knowledge.

NATIONAL CHEDDAR DAY
National Cheddar Day adds some cheesy goodness on February 13th!
Grilled cheese would be buttered bread without melt-able slices piled high; burgers would be lackluster without a perfect ooze; mac & cheese would just be…mac, to be frank. So many of our iconic American dishes simply wouldn’t be the same without a slice of cheddar’s deliciousness.
CHEDDAR HISTORY
There’s some history to this love of cheddar as well. How exactly did cheddar become a staple in so many of our favorite foods? Let us tell you!
Cheddar first rolled into being in the village of Cheddar in Somerset, England in the 12th century. While cheddar accounts for more than a third of all the cheese sold in the United States, it is a royal hit in the United Kingdom where it was created. In fact, more than half of the cheese sales in the UK go to cheddar.
In 1894, renowned cheesemaker Peter McIntosh brought his cheese-making skills to Tillamook County, Oregon where it rains a lot and the grass was always green. He taught the locals all he knew, and in due time he earned himself the nickname “Cheese King of the Coast.” Today, there are more cows than people in Tillamook, and those local farmers have since formed the farmer-owned cooperative we know today as the Tillamook County Creamery Association.
No wonder cheddar finds its way into so many recipes or a simple snack. That rich, creamy and sometimes crumbly flavor is what keeps us coming back for more, bite after delicious bite.

NATIONAL TORTELLINI DAY
Pasta lovers will enjoy a traditional stuffed pasta during National Tortellini Day on February 13th!
Tortellini is a signature dish from the Italian region of Bologna, where they claim to have created this stuffed pasta packed with flavor. Ravioli, tortellini, and tortellacci are all part of the same family of stuffed pasta. The most common fillings for tortellini are ham, white meat, and Parmesan cheese.
Members of an organization called The Learned Order of the Tortellini in the city of Bologna wear special hats to their meetings that are red and gold and shaped like tortellini. They also wear a ribbon, around their neck that has a gold tortellini hanging on it. The Learned Order of the Tortellini has a large membership dedicated to the preservation of the traditional tortellini.
There are many ways to prepare a tortellini dish. You may want to top it with a cheese sauce, cream sauce, pesto or tomato sauce, or follow one of the thousands of cooking blogs available for a great tortellini recipe.

The Madisonville Market, put on by the Northshore Maker’s Market Foundation, is more than just a farmer’s market. It’s a place where the community can interact with local artisans, crafters, farmers, chefs and more as they share their passion for making handmade goods, homegrown produce and prepared foods.
The weekly market takes place each Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the Madisonville Park & Playground, located on Pine Street near the 1000 block (closest cross street is Jahncke Ave.). Over 40 vendors offer hot and ready-to-eat foods, chocolates and candies, cookies and baked goods, jams and jellies, sauces and seasonings, flowers, plants, eggs, cheeses, fruits, veggies, local honey and selections by local vintners. Also, you'll find original art, handmade jewelry and accessories, hand-dyed fabrics, hand-sewn leather goods, wooden creations, soaps and body care products, health and wellness items, home decor items, baby clothes and hand sewn masks.
Shopping aside, families will enjoy the nearby playground, and be sure to look for on-site artists and massage therapists when you're ready to take a break from your shopping. There's also a concession stand on the ballfield with bottled water and sodas.

The non-profit Northshore Maker’s Market Foundation partners with local government, businesses, and other non-profit organizations to fund local projects such as the restoration of historic sites in Madisonville, and the education of young adults ages 14-24 in the arts, trades, agriculture, and entrepreneurship through donations, fundraisers, and mentorship efforts, all with an approach of attaining sustainable solutions for healthier living.
The Northshore Maker’s Market Foundation is sponsored by Resource Bank and local small businesses such as Flamjeaux Coffee Co., a small roasting house in Mandeville.
