The city of New Orleans ease coronavirus restrictions

gatherings of up to 75 people will be allowed indoors and 150 people will be allowed to gather outdoors. Businesses will also be allowed to seat up to 15 people at a single table.

Indoor stadium capacity will be capped at 15% and outdoor stadiums will be capped at 25% occupancy.
In all instances, social distancing and mask mandates still apply.
City officials cited a sustained decrease in the case count, transmission rate and positivity rate of COVID-19 over the past 30 days, with the city's positivity rate under 2%.
The transmission rate, which measures how many people each infected person passes the virus to, is "well below 1.0," city officials said. If a virus' transmission rate is lower than 1, each infected person infects less than one other person on average, causing the virus to die out in that area as people recover.
Around 50 new cases are reported in Orleans parish per day.
The new guidelines are in effect

New Digital Museum Experience

The National WWII Museum’s private Center for Collections & Archives is excited to present rarely seen artifacts from our vault, not available for public viewing, which give voice to the American experience in World War II.

MARCH 2021
The days of World War II correlated with a new and radical direction in jazz. Dissatisfied swing musicians devised a new jazz that was faster, angular, virtuosic, and dissonant.
Thanks to a generous gift from our sponsor Pritzker Military Museum and Library, we are thrilled to offer the March 5-6, 2021, International Conference on World War II 100% virtually and completely free of charge.

There is no cover charge for live music, but we do recommend making a table reservation to guarantee a table to see your favorite artist. Check the website weekly for the line up or follow us to stay up to date on our weekly schedule of events on Instagram. The beer garden is open everyday for you to enjoy a socially distanced beer. Tours, live music, and great food specials available on the weekends.

New Exhibition Celebrates the Social Aid and Pleasure Clubs of New Orleans
NEW ORLEANS – The sights and sounds of a defining local cultural practice, second line parades, come alive in “Dancing in the Streets: Social Aid and Pleasure Clubs of New Orleans,” on view at The Historic New Orleans Collection from Feb. 27 to June 13, 2021.
Assembled in collaboration with more than 30 community partners and club members, the exhibition offers an intimate look at New Orleans street parades while also providing historical context of the tradition. Black mutual aid societies were founded in the 19th century to support African Americans and Afro-Creoles at a time when they were denied many social services, and second line parades are one of their most enduring legacies. Full of color, music, footwork, friends and neighbors, second line parades provide a weekly physical and symbolic gathering place for Black history and expression.

In the exhibition, displayed on the third level of THNOC’s Tricentennial Wing at 520 Royal Street in the French Quarter, parade regalia—from full suits to elaborate baskets and fans—gives viewers an up-close look at the unique artistry of second line parades. Images from a dozen contemporary photographers, including Judy Cooper, whose vision inspired the origin of this show, wrap around three gallery walls to re-create a second line from start to finish.

. COVID-19 safety protocols—facemasks, timed ticketing and limited gallery capacity to ensure social distancing—will be in place,

Mangia!
We will be offering a sample tasting of the newest bourbon whisky to hit Louisiana’s market. Left Bank Straight Bourbon Whisky is the history of bourbon in a bottle.
This spirit is distilled and aged on the banks of the Ohio River in Kentucky. Then it takes a winding journey by barrel on the Mississippi River to New Orleans, where it is carefully married into small batches and bottled.

“Arsenic & Old Lace”
by Joseph Kesselring
Kris Shaw, director
This uproarious farce tells the tale of two seemingly sweet spinster aunts who turn out to be serial murderers. As if that weren’t enough, one brother thinks he is Teddy Roosevelt and another is on the run with his plastic surgeon. This romping dark comedy is full of surprises, quick wit, and plenty of laughs about surviving the insanity of family.
Starring Janet Shea (Abby Brewster), Helen Blanke (Martha Brewster). Leon Contavesprie (Mortimer Brewster) with Louis Dudoussat (Teddy Brewster), Jonathan Damaré (Officer O’Hara), Bryce Slocumb (Jonathan Brewster), Earl Scioneaux (Dr. Einstein), and Alison Logan (Elaine Harper). Featuring Peter Gabb, Paul Bello, Blake Buchert, Ron Blanchard, and Eric Lincoln.

Brighton Beach Memoirs
By Neil Simon
Director: Tom Bubrig
Assistant Director: Tom Hassinger
February 27 - March 14, 2021
Adults: $19, Senior/Military: $17,
Student: $14

Here is part one of Neil Simon’s autobiographical trilogy: a portrait of the writer as a young teen in 1937 living with his family in a crowded, lower-middle-class Brooklyn walk-up. Eugene Jerome, standing in for the author, is the narrator and central character. Dreaming of baseball and girls, Eugene must cope with the mundane existence of his family life in Brooklyn: formidable mother, overworked father, and his worldly older brother Stanley. Throw into the mix his widowed Aunt Blanche, her two young (but rapidly aging) daughters and you have a recipe for hilarity, served up Simon-style. This bittersweet memoir evocatively captures the life of a struggling Jewish household where, as his father states “if you didn’t have a problem, you wouldn’t be living here.”

swirl news
It's hard to believe it has almost been a year since I wrote my first COVID email. Where has it gone? For me in my pre-Covid world, time was marked by travel - the planning of it, anticipating it and the excitement of the trip itself followed by the time between that and the next trip. Well there was no travel this past year so everything is a big blur and instead marked by Covid stages - what we could do when and how we could do it.  As business owners, that became the most important things in our lives - keeping people safe and our doors open. We feel fortunate to have (so far) succeeded at both.

I thought it would be fun to look back over the past year to see what wines kept you going through all of the madness. Your selections have mainly been high quality, adventurous wines mainly from Europe, that range between $15-$30 - I guess that's no surprise as it reflects our personal tastes and wine buying philosophy. So here they are by category - most of these are currently available and staples on our shelves - wines we love to drink and recommend!

Swirl Wine Bar & Market
3143 Ponce de Leon Street
New Orleans, LA 70119

Cheap & Tasty Red - Cembra Schiava, Italy - Hands down one of most popular wines in the store, period. A light chillable red from the Italian Alps in the Trentino - Alto Adige region of northern Italy. At $15 it's a ridiculously good wine.

Cheap & Tasty White - Ponga Sauvignon Blanc, New Zealand - Vibrant, zesty Sauvignon Blanc that whispers (instead of screams!) New Zealand. Crisp, clean with great fruit and minerality, it is a refreshing white on it's own and a great compliment to food.

Bright & Juicy Rosé - Ameztoi Txakolina Rosé, Spain - The popularity of this wine is ridiculous! Usually we get minuscule amounts a few times a year but with less restaurant demand it has been plentiful during covid. Limes and strawberries with a salty, fizzy finish - it's made from a mix of red and white grapes that are destemmed, then co-fermented with native yeast. Super refreshing and fun to drink.

Bright & Juicy Orange - Dila-O Amber, Georgia - It is no surprise that this popular orange wine comes from the Republic of Georgia, the original home for this style. Fermented and made in qvevri (large clay jars buried under the ground) it is made in a lighter style with only 1 month of skin contact making it a perfect introduction to the orange wine.

Supple & Refined - Illahe Pinot Noir, Oregon - Old school winemaking here as Illahe strives to do everything “as naturally as possible, from soil to bottle.” It’s low intervention all the way! Horses transport the grapes to the winery and many of their wines are made without the use of electricity or any modern mechanization. Grapes are gently pressed in a wooden basket press, and the wines include no additives or enzymes.

Fresh & Fruity - Vajra Langhe Rosso, Italy - This has been a store favorite for years; as soon as it hit the market it was on our shelves and has been here ever since. From the Vajra family in Piemonte this delicious red blends the popular Nebbiolo, Dolcetto and Barbera (plus a few other local varieties) into a fruity, elegant complex wine that sings with food - from pizza to burgers  butter and sage dressed pasta - it is a super versatile, delicious red.

Soft & Lush - Gini Soave Classico, Italy - Love the family and their amazing wines! Visiting Gini was one of our best winery visits ever so I have a soft spot for their wines. Their Soave Classico is certified organic and made with 70 year old vines planted in volcanic soil. Floral and delicate fruit on the nose – golden apple, pear, a tinge of ripe lemon -- it features stony minerality, bright, refreshing acidity and lingering notes of honey. It is a gorgeous wine to drink fresh but can also age up to 10 years. It has been one of my favorite wines in store for years.

Crisp & Lively - Francois Le Saint Sancerre, France - It's pretty easy to find Sancerre but it's not easy to find traditionally made, high quality Sancerre under $30. Trying to please the American palate, many producers have moved to a more fruit forward style - not so here. Made by Domaine Fouassier, one of the oldest wine growing families in the Loire, it has delicate fruit on the nose, great texture and structure, finishing with taut, bright acidity and classic Sancerre minerality. Fabulous!

Earthy & Zesty - Domaine Fontsainte Corbieres, France - Consistent, year after year after year...from family owned Domaine de Fontsainte, in the Corbières appellation where vines were planted by the Romans. This cuvee, the domaine's basic rouge was created some fifty years ago, and today it remains the estates bread and butter. It should be yours, too. Whole-cluster carbonic fruity goodness mixed with darker licorice notes all go down with a guzzle.

Big & Bold - Jax Y3 Cabernet, California - Made from sourced fruit by Kirk Venge, the JAX Y3 Cabernet Sauvignon is from the rocky, high elevation, “Red Hills” AVA region in Lake County. It's really hard to get a Venge made wine at this price and it certainly has his signature on it - full bodied with dense layers of black cherry, cocoa nib, forest floor and soft hints of cedar.

Champagne - Louis Nicaise Brut Reserve, France - Another great winery visit and another family producing fantastic wine!  From the Premier Cru village of Hautvillers, just down the road from Dom Perignon, this wine is a rare find, a grower Champagne that is still affordable and delicious. The Nicaise family has been crafting Champagne for four generations and produces just 6,000 cases per year (Moët & Veuve Clicquot make millions). The Brut Reserve represents about half of the total production, and it’s made entirely from grapes grown in the family’s Premier Cru vineyards.

Sparkling Wine - Louis Grenelle Sparkling Saumur Rosé - another Loire Valley favorite and another staple in the store for years, and often featured on our wine list. One of the last remaining family-owned sparkling wine houses in Saumur, Grenelle is known for producing high quality wines with indigenous varieties. Crisp, clean and refreshing, this is great as an aperitif and with light foods.

DEFINITION:

NATIONAL KAHLUA DAY
National Kahlúa Day on February 27th recognizes the rich, cream coffee liqueur that also serves up a great many delicious desserts! This alcoholic beverage adds to cocktails and adult flavored desserts equally well. To celebrate, you may want to use Kahlua, a coffee-flavored rum-based liquor, to flavor your ice cream or another dessert such as cheesecake or cake. It also tastes great in coffee, hot chocolate, creamy cocktails, as a shot or on the rocks.
Pedro Domecq began producing Kahlúa in 1936. In 1994, the company merged with Allied Lyons forming Allied Domecq. In 2005, Allied Domecq was partially acquired by Pernod Ricard which merged with the Swedish Vin & Sprit (V & S Group) in March of 2008.
Kahlúa is made from coffee and rum, so it does contain caffeine.  Kahlúa is found to be used in a few notable cocktails, including the following:
NATIONAL STRAWBERRY DAY
We continue with February’s heart-shaped and red theme by observing National Strawberry Day on February 27th. These juicy, sweet berries can brighten up any dish and are delicious all on their own.
There are a few different stories behind the origin of the name. The more widely accepted version is that the berries would drop off the leaves and become “strewn” about the plant. Overtime “strewn-berries” became “strawberries”. There was a time (and some gardeners still do this today) when strawberry beds were mulched with straw, insulating the plants over the winter, keeping weeds at bay during the growing season and making them easier to harvest. Another sweet story tells of English children stringing the berries on grass straws and selling the “straw berries” in their neighborhoods.
Not only are they delicious, but they are also fragrant. One of the more aromatic fruits, they belong to the rose family.
Strawberries are grown in nearly every corner of the Earth (if the Earth had corners) except for her most frozen southern and northern reaches. Along with all these possible locations, there are over 600 varieties of strawberries as well.
An excellent source of Vitamin C, strawberries are also a good source of folic acid, potassium, and fiber. At 55 calories and zero fat in 1 cup, these sweet things hit the spot when a snack time is calling!

Oscar Celestin and the Young Tuxedo Jazz Band are shown in the late 1920s or early '30s. Brass bands have adapted to incorprate the popular music styles of the day, including jazz, since the late 19th century. Saturday market vendors sell vegetables, fruit, dairy, poultry, seafood, beef, wines, herbs, honey, baked goods, prepared foods, pastries, doggie treats, soaps, potted plants and more.
The public is invited to enjoy live music from the quaint gazebo as they shop for fresh and prepared foods, sample weekly cooking demonstrations, or just have a seat with a cup of coffee and enjoy the music and atmosphere. Occasional visits by area food trucks, too.

Mystery in Motion: Masking and Spirituality in Mardi Gras
Every Wednesday, from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. on March 3 through March 31, teaching artist Ausettua AmorAmenkum will lead a dance course called African Dance in New Orleans: Online Course at the Louisiana State Museum [link.mediaoutreach.meltwater.com]. The six-week course will explore African traditions and influences on New Orleans culture and dance. To register visit the course’s event page .
Mardi Gras exhibit opens; virtual events planned
The Louisiana State Museum, working in collaboration with the renowned Musée du Quai Branly–Jacques Chirac in Paris, has announced the opening of a new exhibition, Mystery in Motion: African American Masking and Spirituality in Mardi Gras

In addition to a stunning exhibit in the Presbytere, there also are several virtual programs offered in connection with the program.

This new exhibition inside the Presbytère on Jackson Square examines the direct influence of multicultural spirituality within the carnival traditions of Black New Orleanians. Due to the pandemic, you will not find many Black masking Indians on the streets this carnival season, but you will see their elaborate suits and learn about their use and inspiration inside the museum’s galleries. The exhibit will be on display in time for the Mardi Gras weekend, from February 15, 2021, through November 28, 2021, and will serve as the centerpiece of the museum’s planned programming to celebrate the 2021 carnival season.
“Mystery in Motion is a groundbreaking exhibition highlighting the vibrant carnival traditions of the Black community in New Orleans and it offers an excellent way to celebrate Mardi Gras safely during this current pandemic,” said Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser.
Mystery in Motion guest curators Kim Vaz-Deville, Ph.D., and Ron Bechet of Xavier University of Louisiana explore spirituality in Mardi Gras through the presentation of more than two dozen Black masking Indian suits, carnival costumes, and masking objects produced in New Orleans, juxtaposed with extraordinary African artifacts that are representative of the cultures, religions, and artistry that influenced their creation. These exceptional African objects will be on loan from the collections of the Musée du Quai Branly–Jacques Chirac and Southern University at New Orleans.
“There is so much happening on Mardi Gras day, it is impossible to take in all the sights, sounds, and experiences. The intent of the exhibition is to offer an opportunity to contemplate the spiritual dimensions of African American Mardi Gras masking that are hidden in plain view,” said Kim Vaz-Deville, Ph.D.

Additionally, several virtual events will be held in conjunction with the exhibition that are free and open to the public:

Every Wednesday, from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. on February 24 through March 31, teaching artist Ausettua AmorAmenkum will lead a dance course called African Dance in New Orleans: Online Course at the Louisiana State Museum [link.mediaoutreach.meltwater.com]. The six-week course will explore African traditions and influences on New Orleans culture and dance. To register visit the course’s event page [link.mediaoutreach.meltwater.com].

CITYWIDE FISH FRY BENEFITS HOSPITALITY WORKER RESOURCE PROGRAM
Local Restaurants Fry Up Fish On Fridays During Lent
3-5-21
NEW ORLEANS—As most New Orleanians know, Lent means Friday fish fries. While the pandemic has forced many churches across the area to alter or cancel this beloved tradition, 39 local restaurants will keep it alive this year with Fish Fry Fridays. The Fish Fry Fridays campaign will serve as a fundraising event to benefit Hospitality Cares, a partnership between Louisiana Hospitality Foundation and United Way of Southeast Louisiana (UWSELA). Participating restaurants will donate $1 per fish fry entrée sold each week.

“The pandemic has hit the hospitality sector the hardest,” said Michael Williamson, UWSELA President and CEO. “Our community always comes together to help those in need, and this campaign is no different. The restaurants themselves are stepping up to keep the industry alive while providing a safety net for its employees through Hospitality Cares.”

Hospitality Cares is a crisis grant program offering varying resources, including free civil legal aid, counseling and emergency financial assistance to individuals working in the hospitality industry – one of the region’s largest employment sectors. The emergency grants award up to $2,500 to eligible employees at hospitality businesses running active United Way workplace campaigns in Jefferson, Orleans, Plaquemines, St. Bernard, St. Tammany, Tangipahoa and Washington parishes. The funds provide temporary assistance during times of crisis to cover basic financial needs, including housing, medical and utility bills.

The Fish Fry Fridays campaign was initially launched during Lent 2020 to help hospitality workers laid off during the pandemic. It raised over $12,000 from restaurant sales and a sponsorship from TABASCO®, who will sponsor the campaign again in 2021 and be joined by New Orleans Fish House who will offer discounts to participating restaurants for their seafood features.

“We are proud to participate in this campaign,” said Phil DeGruy, New Orleans Fish House sales manager. “It is not only bringing us closer together, but it allows us to keep traditions going and keep restaurants open.”

Allstate Sugar Bowl Crescent City Classic Releases Official 2021 Poster Design Featuring City Park Scene from New Orleans Artist Terry Marks
Top 500 Men and Top 500 Women in April’s Virtual 10K Race will Receive
 a Free Poster
Allstate Sugar Bowl Crescent City Classic officials have released the official poster for 2021 featuring a realistic painting from locally renowned artist Terry Marks. The 2021 poster features City Park’s picturesque Peristyle reflecting on a pool of water during a sunset.

Marks drew inspiration for the painting and poster from the scenic beauty of City Park and New Orleans, and he used both as inspiration for his take on the highly anticipated annual CCC poster.

“A photographer friend of mine took this image of the Peristyle at sunset and I knew immediately it was the image I wanted to incorporate into my poster design,” said Marks. “Ever since I became an artist most of my subject matter involves local themes, I love capturing the beauty of our city.”

Marks is the owner of Local Artscapes By Terry J. Marks, Sr. His studio is in Metairie on Airline Highway.

Marks’ official CCC poster will be available for sale at www.ccc10k.com. In continuation of CCC tradition, the top 500 men and top 500 women finishers will all receive a commemorative poster for free.

The 43rd running of the Allstate Sugar Bowl Crescent City Classic will be a virtual race in 2021 due to COVID guidelines. The virtual 10K race will be available for participants to complete between Thursday, April 1 through Monday, April 5.
