Mayor Cantrell Issues Parishwide Indoor Mask Mandate, Requires City Employees and Contractors to be Vaccinated
|
NEW ORLEANS — In response to the exponential growth of new COVID cases and hospitalization statewide, Mayor LaToya Cantrell today reinstituted an indoor mask mandate in Orleans Parish and announced that all City of New Orleans employees and contractors must be vaccinated against COVID-19.
As COVID hospitalizations surge across the state, now exceeding 1700 individuals, hospital capacity has been severely impacted. Hospitals have shut down elective procedures and emergency departments are full. This is due to the more contagious and more deadly Delta variant of COVID-19.
In order to order to quickly curb the dangerous and rapid spread of the Delta variant, an indoor mask mandate will be in effect immediately in Orleans Parish. Everyone, regardless of their vaccination status, should wear a mask indoors when with people who are not members of their immediate household.
Additionally, Mayor Cantrell announced that COVID-19 vaccines will be mandated for City of New Orleans employees and contractors who work for the City. Contractors have been notified and more information about how to prove vaccination status or access a vaccine will be made available to employees early next week.

Public
· Anyone on or off Facebook
POSTPONED to July 31 due to weather - Join the Beauregard-Keyes house as we celebrate the craftsmanship and artistry of the master builders responsible for the architecture of New Orleans. We will be hosting a series of lectures and demonstrations over the course of the next few months highlighting trades such as plasterwork, ironwork, masonry, and carpentry.
On Saturday, July 31 at 11:00AM, our series returns for our third event featuring Master Blacksmith Darryl Reeves. Mr. Reeves, a third generation metal worker, is owner of Andrew’s Welding and Blacksmith Shop in New Orleans’ Seventh Ward. Regarded as a natural, Reeves is well known for his creative contemporary steel and brass staircase railings and furniture, and is revered for his historic restorations of antique iron work at historic sites.
His public commissions include the restoration of the ornate fence at the Presbytère in Jackson Square in the French Quarter, fabrication of a new identical fence (using old techniques) for its sister building, “The Cabildo,” and the disassembly and reconstruction of the massive gate at the Chalmette National Cemetery which dates to 1872. He is also responsible for restoring and maintaining the beautiful ironwork you see throughout the Beauregard-Keyes House.
The lecture portion of this event will also be live-streamed to our Facebook page. If you are unable to attend in person, watch from home!

LIVE MUSIC
TO BAYOU BAR
Local Artists to Perform Weekly at Garden District Tavern
Nestled on the ground floor of the Pontchartrain Hotel, the Bayou Bar is a casual tavern-style bar where music played an integral role in its storied past: both Sinatra and Capote spent many a night imbibing in the Garden District drinking den. Now, the cozy bar is thrilled to announce that its popular live music program will return Wednesday - Saturday
evenings from 7PM – 10PM.
Performances run three full hours with no cover charge. Tables are available on a first come, first served basis.

NATIONAL RASPBERRY CAKE DAY
National Raspberry Cake Day is jubilantly feasted each year on July 31st. Therefore, today is the day to enjoy raspberry cake. Because it is a cool and refreshing dessert. And, is indeed a summertime favorite around the United States.
Raspberries are the edible fruit of the plant that belongs to the genus Rubus of the rose family. Raspberry plants grow on woody stems and are perennial. These amazing plants grow in all temperate regions of the world, too, making them widely available. Producers also cultivate the raspberry as a commercial crop, bringing them into groceries and other markets. The raspberry was once a midsummer crop. However, through innovation, new technology, and transportation, producers now grow them all year long.
More interesting facts about raspberries include:
- An individual raspberry weighs 0.11 – 0.18 oz.
- An individual raspberry is made up of about 100 drupelets.
- One raspberry bush can yield several hundred berries a year.
- A single raspberry has a hollow core once it is removed from the receptacle.
- Raspberries are a rich source of vitamin C, manganese, and dietary fiber.
- Raspberries contain vitamin B1, vitamin B3, folic acid, magnesium, copper, and iron.

NATIONAL AVOCADO DAY
Ripe for the picking, add this delicious superfruit to your menu on National Avocado Day on July 31st!
While guacamole is grand, don’t settle for just the chips and dip on this food holiday. Since avocado is so versatile, clear the table for the entire meal. That includes everything from the appetizer and main dish all the way to dessert. On National Avocado Day, this tree grown fruit has them all covered!
Avocados are more than a staple food in the American diet; they are proven to be a key ingredient in recipes for both inside the body and on the body! According to the Hass Avocado Board, as of 2015, avocado consumption in the United States doubled since 2005 and quadrupled since 2000. In fact, a whopping 4.25 billion avocados were sold in the U.S. in 2015. That’s four point two five billion of this amazingly beautiful food.
Super Food
There are many reasons to celebrate National Avocado Day. For one, avocados target insulin resistance with heart-healthy fats. They also fight Alzheimer’s with its Omega 3 fatty acids. Another avocado superpower is preventing and repairing damage due to its source of Vitamins C, E and K.
One of the secret weapons in an avocado is the high oleic acid content. This moisturizing fatty acid helps keep skin soft and hydrated but also supports the regeneration of damaged skin cells reducing redness and irritation. Eat more of this superfruit or cook with avocado oil if you have this type of skin issue.
Beauty
Ancient Aztecs used the avocado to beautify their skin topically with masks. Then in the early 20th century, the cosmetic industry discovered the benefits of its oil in creams, lotions, facial cleansers and other products that required a smooth application. Interestingly, the practice continues today.
As mentioned before, avocados have found their way into every meal of the day. Of course, avocados celebrate with dessert effortlessly. Additionally, the creamy texture replaces calorie-laden oils with healthful fats. That means we can indulge without the guilt. What better way to celebrate National Avocado Day than to indulge a little?

New Orleans' Classic Memories: 1718 -1964
Jerrytt Mon
Let's go back to the turn of the century French Quarter dwellings: This was at St. Philip St. (931-933) with a "herringboned" brick patio/courtyard, washtubs for the laundry, the "forerunner" of metal roofing: Tin and a brick chimney to keep one's life in warmth and comfort on cold days. Summer? Forget it.

Ain't There (dere) No More - New Orleans
Brian Jordan
Before I knew the Crystal hot sauce brand in the 80s, I thought the iconic neon sign at 4301 Tulane Ave displayed along I-10 showed a baker mixing dough of some sort..... little did I know.
I never caught the aroma coming from the Pre Karina sign, that many folks talked about.

VENDOR OF THE WEEK:
Huckleberry Fred’s Creamery
|
Hey, who cut the cheese? This joke is a longtime favorite of this week's vendor, Huckleberry Fred's Creamery. They are a dairy goat farm located just over an hour north of New Orleans in Franklinton, Louisiana. Couple Chris and Tiffany had the idea about two years ago, inspired by their cute pet goats (pictured above). Today Fred’s is run by the two and their in-laws, Tanna and Fred. Tiffany handles the cheese while Tanna is the mastermind behind their famous cheesecake, sold by the slice at almost every market. It doesn’t stop there--along with a variety of savory and sweet cheese spreads the booth boasts milled grains like grits, chicken eggs, dog treats, soap bars, and of course good old-fashioned goat’s milk. For those who are lactose-intolerant, goat’s milk is a great alternative as it contains less lactose, smaller fat globules, and lower levels of protein alpha-S1-casein (a key player in our gut intolerance). Keep an eye out for fudge and kiefer, upcoming products that are still in the works, and please honor National Cheesecake Day by snagging a slice on your way out of market.

City of New Orleans Reminds Residents of Reactivated School Zones
|
NEW ORLEANS — The City of New Orleans today announced that school zone cameras and school zone warning lights will be activated over the next few weeks for the new school year beginning on Monday, Aug. 2, 2021, at 7 a.m. School zone hours are from 7 a.m. until 9 a.m. and 2:45 p.m. until 4:45 p.m.
School zones are a safety focus for the City. Drivers can expect to see enforcement of 20 mph school zone speed limits. Motorists are advised to carefully observe posted speed limits and exercise caution in school zones, including no cell phone use, and stopping for children crossing the street.
The automated photo enforcement program is one component of the City’s efforts to reduce speeding and increase safety on our streets. Speed is fundamentally linked to safety, with higher speeds increasing the likelihood of crashes and increasing the severity of crashes. A person hit by a car traveling 35 mph is five times more likely to be killed than by a car traveling at 20 mph. The risk is even greater when a crash involves a child or a larger vehicle, such as an SUV. Higher speeds contribute to crashes in a number of ways:
- Crashes at higher speeds create more force and are therefore more likely to be fatal
- Drivers traveling at higher speeds have a narrower field of vision
- Drivers traveling at higher speeds travel further before they can react
- Vehicles traveling at higher speeds have longer braking distances

A Legacy in Art
open

THNOC’s new exhibition on John Clemmer, a luminary of the New Orleans art scene for more than seven decades,. Learn about the artist and his legacy through more than 150 works featured in the Tricentennial Wing galleries at 520 Royal Street. Admission to the exhibition is free.
Born in Acadiana on July 22, 1921, John Clemmer was a generously spirited luminary of the New Orleans art scene for more than seven decades, producing a body of modernist art while inspiring dozens of his fellow artists. He studied in the French Quarter at the Arts and Crafts Club’s School of Art and was the only artist to have been a student, teacher, and director of the Club and its school. Clemmer later taught at Tulane University’s School of Architecture and then chaired the Newcomb Art Department.
The new exhibition John Clemmer: A Legacy in Art, debuting on the centennial of his birth, features 62 of the artist’s works, including paintings, drawings, prints, and sculpture. A companion exhibition presents pieces by 76 artists Clemmer knew during his lengthy career. These include artists associated with the Arts and Crafts Club, the Orleans Gallery, Newcomb College, Tulane University, and the city at large. This is a wide-reaching exhibition and covers much of the history of art in the city of New Orleans during 75 years of Clemmer’s career—from 1939 to 2014.

Correia is the creator of the Wall Street Journal and New York Times best-selling Monster Hunter International series as well as the urban fantasy novels in the“Grimnoir Chronicles.” Also included in his body of work is the highly acclaimed epic fantasy series “The Saga of the Forgotten Warrior.” “Monster Hunter International”, the first book in the series, also reached the Entertainment Weekly bestseller list.
His new release, “Monster Hunter Bloodlines,” is the first solo Monster Hunter International entry in four years. Throughout the series, Owen Pitt and Monster Hunter International, the premier monster eradication service, have faced unspeakable horrors from myth, legend, B-movies, and the pit of Hell. Vampires, werewolves, succubi, elder gods: none stand a chance against Monster Hunter International.
“We are so happy to welcome back Larry and his legion of Monster Hunters to The Garden District Book Shop,” shares Christopher Tidmore, co-owner of GDBS. “In 2017, fans came from far and wide to the Garden District to get a first glimpse of the previous chapter in this ongoing tale. Since Larry’s latest addition to the monster hunter-verse is his best yet, we cannot wait to put out the clarion call for new recruits to gather at the Historic Rink to stop the undead minions from overrunning New Orleans.”
“[A] no-holds-barred all-out page turner that is part science fiction, part horror, and an absolute blast to read.” —Bookreporter.com
“...lighthearted, testosterone-soaked... action horror with elaborate weaponry, hand-to-hand combat, disgusting monsters, and an endless stream of blood and body parts.” —Publishers Weekly on Monster Hunter Vendetta

LIVE MUSIC FROM THE BRASS-A-HOLICS at the Jazz Playhouse
Since 2010, the Brass-A-Holics have been taking their unique sound around the world. Steeped in the deep musical culture of New Orleans, the band brings a heavy dose of go-go funk to the New Orleans brass sound. In a blending of musical cultures stemming from cities separated by more than a thousand miles, a Brass-a-Holics live show takes the New Orleans brass band culture and infuses it with the electricity of Washington D.C.'s go-go. The resulting sound is both captivating and unique. The band consists of core New Orleans brass elements- trumpet, trombone, saxophone- and adds a full drum set, percussion, keyboard, bass and electric guitar, giving the band limitless options to explore new sonic territory.
*Preferred Seating for small parties only. Parties of 8 or more people must inquire via email to cwhitney@sonesta.com to reserve.*
**Refund available upon cancellation of reservation within 72 hours of show time**

Arts District New Orleans Announces
“Fidelity Bank White Linen Night”
|
NEW ORLEANS (press release) – Arts District New Orleans (ADNO), the organization that founded the popular White Linen Night, is pleased to announce that the event is back this year, and will take place on August 7th, in conjunction with the First Saturday art walk. This year’s event is presented by new sponsor Fidelity Bank and will take place from 6-9 p.m. on the 300-600 blocks of Julia Street in the New Orleans’ historic Warehouse Arts District and will also include museums and institutions in the immediate area. The 20 contemporary art galleries and institutions which compose the Arts District are eager to welcome guests back to visit and view their exhibitions in person at this highly-anticipated annual event. Guests are strongly encouraged to don their white linen while strolling down Julia St., visit the galleries, enjoy food and drink from local vendors, and art-centered street activations.
Each gallery will present new exhibitions, with world-class art installations from the talented artists represented. In addition to the Julia Street art walk event, member galleries off-Julia will also welcome guests, and area institutions The Contemporary Arts Center (CAC) and The Ogden Museum of Southern art will also open their doors and unveil new exhibitions. As the event closes, guests are invited and encouraged to make their way to White Linen Night Party, After Dark, an after-party event presented by the CAC which goes until 11p.m.
“White Linen Night has been part of the Arts District calendar for 27 years,” says Leslie-Claire Spillman, ADNO President. “While the events of the last 15 months have presented some challenges for this year’s event, we are grateful that with this new partnership with Fidelity Bank, we are able to welcome guests back to the district for the event we all know and love; a night of food, drink, fun, and most importantly ART. Join us for the art walk from 6-9 p.m. and then keep the party going into the night at the CAC, or drink and dine at the many incredible eateries and watering holes in the beautiful Arts District”.

Join us on Sunday, August 15, for our next concert featuring Clarinetist Tim Laughlin!
Laughlin was born and raised in New Orleans. He began playing clarinet at age nine. Shortly after, discovered jazz on the radio, thus starting his early record collections. His influences are many: Irving Fazola, Benny Goodman, Pete Fountain, Kenny Davern, Bob Wilber, Connie Jones, Jack Maheu.
After graduating Holy Cross High School, Tim joined the Musicians Union and began working steady at what he likes to call “The Conservatory of Bourbon St.” A few years later, he began an extended stint with The Dukes of Dixieland in the late 80's and played Carnegie Hall with them in 1992. In 1993, he left and kept his own band together, touring over 20 countries. To this day, Laughlin is one of the most in-demand clarinetists in New Orleans and is a favorite at French Quarter Fest and Jazz Fest.
Tim has played with jazz legends such as Al Hirt, Pete Fountain, and Danny Barker.
Laughlin has a dozen solo recordings. In 2003, "The Isle of Orleans" was an award- winning CD, consisting of all-originals in the New Orleans jazz style and has been featured in TV and movies. In 2016, two of his songs were featured in an Eddie Murphy movie, “Mr. Church.” His latest CD, “New Standards” is another all-originals album, once again bringing New Orleans Jazz to the 21st century.
Recently, Tim received national and international attention as he performed nightly on his balcony on Royal St. for his neighbors, to put music back in a quiet French Quarter during the Covid-19 shutdown. He’s a former board member of French Quarter Festivals, Inc. and is celebrating 40 years as a professional musician.
Joining Tim tonight are Nahum Zdybel and Taylor Kent. Nahum is a talented improvisor and composer based in New Orleans. He leads and tours with his own talented group and is a first- call guitarist on many jobs in New Orleans. Taylor is an established bass player with several bands and performs at times with the LPO.
Doors open at 6pm, with the concert beginning at 6:30pm. Seating is open on a first come, first serve basis in the air conditioned Salle À Manger, or dining room, of the BK House.
This is a Bring Your Own Beverage event! We suggest bringing extra cups and bottle openers with you.

Sometimes it is indeed better to have things late than never. And that's the case when it comes to Mardi Gras festivities in Jefferson Parish.
Of course, virtually no one got to enjoy the revelry of Mardi Gras in 2021 so local authorities in Jefferson Parish are trying to help folks somewhat make up for the loss of no parades this year.
They want everyone to celebrate with a big ole parade on September 25. And they're calling it "Tardi Gras."
Now, the parade is not set in stone, but a vote by the Parish Council will come this Wednesday, July 14th, and it's expected to be approved.
“I’m excited about it,” said Carnival Historian Arthur Hardy. “We need to do something positive and Mardi Gras even a fake Mardi Gras is something that brings people together. And I’ll really be surprised if this isn’t a very positive event. I think it’s going to be cool.”
The projected parade route will combine the old with the new. Tardi Gras will parade on Metairie Road, which hasn't been done in years.
