SPRING BEGINS
Spring begins on the March or vernal equinox, which is when the amount of sunshine is approximately 12 hours long. The amount of sunlight will incrementally increase until the first day of Summer.
The vernal equinox marks the moment the sun crosses the celestial equator. This is the imaginary line in the sky above the Earth’s equator, from south to north. The vernal equinox happens on March 19, 20, or 21 every year in the Northern Hemisphere. In the Southern Hemisphere, this same event marks the beginning of fall. Meteorologists mark the spring from March 1 through May 31st.
In 2020, spring arrived a little earlier due to it being a leap year. On Leap Day, there’s a short math lesson regarding the Gregorian calendar. To keep our calendar following the seasons so that spring happens when flowers grow and winter arrives when snow falls, an additional day was figured into years divisible by the number four. This caused the 2020 spring to occur earlier than any living human being alive had ever seen. Before 2020, the earliest spring on record took place in 1896.

The New Orleans Recreation Development Commission (NORD) will modify its annual Easter Eggstravaganza into a drive-thru event from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 20 at three locations: Joe Brown Park in New Orleans East, Behrman Park in Algiers and Lafitte Greenway in Treme.
|
At the drive-thru event, families can drive through the route with Easter decorations to receive prepackaged bags filled with goodies from NORD. Organizers say they encourage families to come in the Easter spirit and bring their baskets to the free event.
The Drive-Thru Easter Eggstravaganza will be open to children from ages 3 to 12. One bag of Easter eggs filled with candy will be given to each child, who must be present.
NORD says families will be asked to stay in their cars to limit in-person interactions, as a COVID precaution. Staff and volunteers at the event will wear masks during the event and vendors along the route will remain six feet apart. Also, hand sanitizer and gloves will be on-site for use throughout the event.
Joe W. Brown Park, 5601 Read Boulevard in New Orleans East, Lafitte Greenway, 1971 St. Louis Street in Treme and Behrman Recreation Center, 529 General Meyer Avenue in Algiers,
The Easter Eggstravaganza launched through a community need to gather youth and families from neighboring communities to celebrate the season and promote community engagement. NORD says it hosts more than 500 people during its Easter events each year.

On View at the CAC's St. Joseph Street Warehouse!
|
Weekends: March 20-21, March 27-28, April 3-4 | Free AdmissionThe CAC is excited to host an exhibition and auction featuring New Orleans' famous "house floats" from Krewe of Red Beans' "Hire a Mardi Gras Artist" initiative! Artistic creations from select house floats will be on view all together for the first time, and available for purchase through an online auction that will benefit New Orleans culture-bearers and the CAC.
“Community collaboration through art is at the heart of New Orleans’ unique culture. The CAC is thrilled that locals and visitors will have a last chance to see these incredible works of art and take home a piece of Carnival history,” states George Scheer, Executive Director of the CAC.
“The House Floats exhibition and auction allows Krewe of Red Beans to continue our community-wide effort to raise funds and support ‘Feed the Second Line,’ our effort to create a true safety net for New Orleans culture," says Devin De Wulf, founder of the Hire a Mardi Gras Artist Initiative. "The community rallied and supported the ‘Hire A Mardi Gras Artist’ initiative and the artists delivered much needed Carnival magic.”
Artistic sponsorship for the exhibition and auction comes from The Domain Companies: "Domain is proud to support the Krewe of Red Beans as Arts Sponsor of its upcoming House Floats exhibit and auction at the CAC," says Matt Schwartz, Co-Chief Executive Officer of The Domain Companies. New Orleans' culture bearers make this city the unique place we all love; they've been among the hardest hit by the pandemic and they need our support now more than ever. With the Hire A Mardi Gras Artist initiative, the Krewe of Red Beans has again come up with a creative way to provide that support, celebrate their talent and give everyone a taste of the Carnival we all missed this year."
Admission will be free and open to the public weekends only, March 20 through April 4, from 11:30 am to 4:30 pm. Advance online reservations required on a timed-ticketed basis of 50 people per hour. COVID-19 guidelines will be enforced, including social distancing and mask-wearing. Learn more and reserve your timeslot today!

City Encourages Local Bar and Restaurant Owners to Apply for Parklet Pilot Program
|
NEW ORLEANS — As New Orleans begins to experience spring weather, the City of New Orleans reminds local bar and restaurant owners about the Parklet Pilot Program. One component of the City’s Outdoor Dining initiative, the Parklet Pilot Program allows restaurants and bars to utilize on-street parking spaces in front of their restaurants and bars for additional seating. This can provide additional safe dining spaces for restaurants and bars while indoor occupancy limits are reduced due to COVID-19 restrictions. The permit application fee and meter rental fee have been waived until June 30, 2021. More information is available at www.nola.gov/parklets.
The Parklet Pilot Program has been available citywide since the end of October 2020 and is expected to run for as long as there are COVID-related occupancy restrictions in restaurants and bars. After that, the City is expecting to launch a permanent parklet program. Details regarding the transfer from pilot to permanent parklet program will be released as the permanent program is developed, but it will require re-permitting. The City will work to make that process as seamless as possible for pilot participants.
Pilot Parklets are required to provide a barrier along the active right-of-way. To aid in this expense, the City, in partnership with the New Orleans Business Alliance, has grants of up to $2,000 available to businesses on a first-come, first-served basis through April 15, 2021. Grant applications are available on outdoordiningnola.com.
PILOT PARKLET PROGRAM OVERVIEW
- Restaurants and bars are eligible to apply for the permit during the pilot.
- Permit and parking meter rental fees are waived during the pilot at least through June 30, 2021.
- Pilot will run for as long as there are COVID-related occupancy restrictions in restaurants and bars.
- Outdoor Dining grants of up to $2,000 are available to interested businesses through April 15, 2021.

NATIONAL CORN DOG DAY
In March every year, National Corn Dog Day gives sports fans, concert and fairgoers another chance to dunk.
The corn dog started out as a sausage or hot dog baked or deep-fried in a cornmeal breading and served as a sandwich. In the late 1930s or early 1940s, this sandwich became a convenient fair food when the whole meal was put on a stick before being deep-fried. Fairgoers could then eat their corn dog while taking in the exhibits.
The popular convenience food is often enjoyed with mustard, ketchup, and other dipping sauces. Adding utility of a stick carried to other fried foods as well and the practice continues today. From sports arenas to amusement parks, state fairs and concerts, Americans can get their corn dogs and dipping sauces to go and not miss out on a moment of the game.

NATIONAL RAVIOLI DAY
On National Ravioli Day, celebrate a pasta that is fun and versatile. Observed on March 20th each year, pasta lovers dive in on this food holiday.
Ravioli are a traditional type of Italian filled pasta, made up of a filling sealed between two layers of thin egg pasta dough. Imagine a small meatball tucked, snug inside two cozy layers of delicious pasta dough. That’s basically what ravioli is. Although, a variety of fillings from cheesy to meaty take up that cozy spot in the dough. And the ravioli are usually served in either a broth or with a pasta sauce. A variety of filling recipes are available from cheesy to meaty.
While ravioli often serves as the main course, it can also be a side dish or even an appetizer. Many popular recipes bake or deep fry the ravioli. With chocolate added to the pasta or cream cheese stuffing and a caramel sauce, the dish quickly becomes a dessert!
Ravioli can be homemade or may be purchased fresh or frozen in grocery stores. In the United States, Chef Boyardee popularized the canned ravioli. This ravioli is filled with either beef or processed cheese and served in a tomato, tomato-meat or tomato-cheese sauce.
We turn to St. Louis, Missouri, to learn about the toasted ravioli. By accident, a ravioli fell into the fryer at Oldani’s back in the 1940s. And as with accidents, the crisp ravioli earned a place on the menu. Or so the story goes. If so, it’s a delicious one.

A bit of detective work for Steamboat Saturday, from the archives of the Library of Congress we have this enlargement of a stereographic photograph titled “Steamboat at the Landing, New Orleans, LA” given a date range from 1890 to 1900. The title is handwritten and there is no attribution as to the photographer or publisher.
The scene itself is probably fairly typical for a steamboat – the lower deck packed with cargo in wooden crates, barrels, and burlap sacks. A number of workers may be seen loading the vessel. Behind the barrels, beneath the raised canvas covering fixed below the roof, is a cache of wood destined to feed the ship’s boilers during the voyage. All in all, a fairly typical scene. But can we identify the boat?
Along the forward roofline just below the two black smokestacks is a horizontal sign that reads “N.O. River Line” on a white plank with rounded ends. Also, on the far right on the side of the pilot house is a partial name with only four letters – “ELEO.” The first name that comes to mind is “Eleonore,” but the only vessel registered by that name was not built until 1902. There was, however, a vessel named “Eleonora” that was built in 1865 than ran the New Orleans to Shreveport route, but she sank in February 1868 below Shreveport and was never raised. So now we are back to square one. Or are we?
Suppose the fourth letter is something other than an “O” as a small portion of the right side of the letter is out of the frame. If the four letters were “ELEC” we would have two boats to consider – the Elector and the Electra. The Elector was built in 1866 but never sailed on the Mississippi before she was dismantled in 1881. That leaves the Electra.
The Electra was built at Jeffersonville, Indiana by the Howard Ship Yards in 1897 for Captain George L. White for the Red River Line, running the New Orleans to Shreveport route. The Red River Line, which had been established in 1874, eventually failed in 1904 and their fleet and property was sold at auction in December 1904. The Electra was sold for $4,300 to the Ryman Steamboat Company and taken north to run the Columbia River between Paducah and Burnside, Kentucky.

New Exhibition Celebrates the Social Aid and Pleasure Clubs of New Orleans
|
Assembled in collaboration with more than 30 community partners and club members, the exhibition offers an intimate look at New Orleans street parades while also providing historical context of the tradition. Black mutual aid societies were founded in the 19th century to support African Americans and Afro-Creoles at a time when they were denied many social services, and second line parades are one of their most enduring legacies. Full of color, music, footwork, friends and neighbors, second line parades provide a weekly physical and symbolic gathering place for Black history and expression.
In the exhibition, displayed on the third level of THNOC’s Tricentennial Wing at 520 Royal Street in the French Quarter, parade regalia—from full suits to elaborate baskets and fans—gives viewers an up-close look at the unique artistry of second line parades. Images from a dozen contemporary photographers, including Judy Cooper, whose vision inspired the origin of this show, wrap around three gallery walls to re-create a second line from start to finish.
. COVID-19 safety protocols—facemasks, timed ticketing and limited gallery capacity to ensure social distancing—will be in place,

The Madisonville Market, put on by the Northshore Maker’s Market Foundation, is more than just a farmer’s market. It’s a place where the community can interact with local artisans, crafters, farmers, chefs and more as they share their passion for making handmade goods, homegrown produce and prepared foods.
The weekly market takes place each Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the Madisonville Park & Playground, located on Pine Street near the 1000 block (closest cross street is Jahncke Ave.). Over 40 vendors offer hot and ready-to-eat foods, chocolates and candies, cookies and baked goods, jams and jellies, sauces and seasonings, flowers, plants, eggs, cheeses, fruits, veggies, local honey and selections by local vintners. Also, you'll find original art, handmade jewelry and accessories, hand-dyed fabrics, hand-sewn leather goods, wooden creations, soaps and body care products, health and wellness items, home decor items, baby clothes and hand sewn masks.
Shopping aside, families will enjoy the nearby playground, and be sure to look for on-site artists and massage therapists when you're ready to take a break from your shopping. There's also a concession stand on the ballfield with bottled water and sodas.
The non-profit Northshore Maker’s Market Foundation partners with local government, businesses, and other non-profit organizations to fund local projects such as the restoration of historic sites in Madisonville, and the education of young adults ages 14-24 in the arts, trades, agriculture, and entrepreneurship through donations, fundraisers, and mentorship efforts, all with an approach of attaining sustainable solutions for healthier living.
The Northshore Maker’s Market Foundation is sponsored by Resource Bank and local small businesses such as Flamjeaux Coffee Co., a small roasting house in Mandeville.

History of New Orleans Rhythm & Blues Class
Wednesdays,
March 24
4 p.m. Zoom
admission
|
Professor, musician, and tour guide Dr. Charles Chamberlain will host this engaging three-part class on the long and storied history of Rhythm and Blues in New Orleans (R&B). From the R&B epicenter of Rampart Street and Matassa’s Studio to the hits of Little Richard, New Orleans was one of the most successful cities in putting out R&B hits starting in the 1950s. By the 1970s though, the city and the studios had a major downturn in hits, but the legacies of Fats Domino, Dave Bartholomew and Lloyd Price still looms large on the New Orleans music scene. Dr. Chamberlain will analyze over 6 hours of class time the rise, fall and legacy of R&B in New Orleans.
Can’t make the class? No Problem! A Zoom link will be provided after the class and participants can watch the class for 30 days after each session.

Mystery in Motion: Masking and Spirituality in Mardi Gras
|
|
In addition to a stunning exhibit in the Presbytere, there also are several virtual programs offered in connection with the program.
This new exhibition inside the Presbytère on Jackson Square examines the direct influence of multicultural spirituality within the carnival traditions of Black New Orleanians. Due to the pandemic, you will not find many Black masking Indians on the streets this carnival season, but you will see their elaborate suits and learn about their use and inspiration inside the museum’s galleries. The exhibit will be on display through November 28, 2021,
“Mystery in Motion is a groundbreaking exhibition highlighting the vibrant carnival traditions of the Black community in New Orleans and it offers an excellent way to celebrate Mardi Gras safely during this current pandemic,” said Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser.
Mystery in Motion guest curators Kim Vaz-Deville, Ph.D., and Ron Bechet of Xavier University of Louisiana explore spirituality in Mardi Gras through the presentation of more than two dozen Black masking Indian suits, carnival costumes, and masking objects produced in New Orleans, juxtaposed with extraordinary African artifacts that are representative of the cultures, religions, and artistry that influenced their creation. These exceptional African objects will be on loan from the collections of the Musée du Quai Branly–Jacques Chirac and Southern University at New Orleans.
“There is so much happening on Mardi Gras day, it is impossible to take in all the sights, sounds, and experiences. The intent of the exhibition is to offer an opportunity to contemplate the spiritual dimensions of African American Mardi Gras masking that are hidden in plain view,” said Kim Vaz-Deville, Ph.D.
Additionally, several virtual events will be held in conjunction with the exhibition that are free and open to the public:

CITYWIDE FISH FRY BENEFITS HOSPITALITY WORKER RESOURCE PROGRAM
Local Restaurants Fry Up Fish On Fridays During Lent
3-26-21
|
NEW ORLEANS—As most New Orleanians know, Lent means Friday fish fries. While the pandemic has forced many churches across the area to alter or cancel this beloved tradition, 39 local restaurants will keep it alive this year with Fish Fry Fridays. The Fish Fry Fridays campaign will serve as a fundraising event to benefit Hospitality Cares, a partnership between Louisiana Hospitality Foundation and United Way of Southeast Louisiana (UWSELA). Participating restaurants will donate $1 per fish fry entrée sold each week.
“The pandemic has hit the hospitality sector the hardest,” said Michael Williamson, UWSELA President and CEO. “Our community always comes together to help those in need, and this campaign is no different. The restaurants themselves are stepping up to keep the industry alive while providing a safety net for its employees through Hospitality Cares.”
Hospitality Cares is a crisis grant program offering varying resources, including free civil legal aid, counseling and emergency financial assistance to individuals working in the hospitality industry – one of the region’s largest employment sectors. The emergency grants award up to $2,500 to eligible employees at hospitality businesses running active United Way workplace campaigns in Jefferson, Orleans, Plaquemines, St. Bernard, St. Tammany, Tangipahoa and Washington parishes. The funds provide temporary assistance during times of crisis to cover basic financial needs, including housing, medical and utility bills.
The Fish Fry Fridays campaign was initially launched during Lent 2020 to help hospitality workers laid off during the pandemic. It raised over $12,000 from restaurant sales and a sponsorship from TABASCO®, who will sponsor the campaign again in 2021 and be joined by New Orleans Fish House who will offer discounts to participating restaurants for their seafood features.
“We are proud to participate in this campaign,” said Phil DeGruy, New Orleans Fish House sales manager. “It is not only bringing us closer together, but it allows us to keep traditions going and keep restaurants open.”

Allstate Sugar Bowl Crescent City Classic Releases Official 2021 Poster Design Featuring City Park Scene from New Orleans Artist Terry Marks
Top 500 Men and Top 500 Women in April’s Virtual 10K Race will Receive
a Free Poster
|
Allstate Sugar Bowl Crescent City Classic officials have released the official poster for 2021 featuring a realistic painting from locally renowned artist Terry Marks. The 2021 poster features City Park’s picturesque Peristyle reflecting on a pool of water during a sunset.
Marks drew inspiration for the painting and poster from the scenic beauty of City Park and New Orleans, and he used both as inspiration for his take on the highly anticipated annual CCC poster.
“A photographer friend of mine took this image of the Peristyle at sunset and I knew immediately it was the image I wanted to incorporate into my poster design,” said Marks. “Ever since I became an artist most of my subject matter involves local themes, I love capturing the beauty of our city.”
Marks is the owner of Local Artscapes By Terry J. Marks, Sr. His studio is in Metairie on Airline Highway.
Marks’ official CCC poster will be available for sale at www.ccc10k.com. In continuation of CCC tradition, the top 500 men and top 500 women finishers will all receive a commemorative poster for free.
The 43rd running of the Allstate Sugar Bowl Crescent City Classic will be a virtual race in 2021 due to COVID guidelines. The virtual 10K race will be available for participants to complete between Thursday, April 1 through Monday, April 5.
