Dew Drop Inn Announces Spring Concert Series
 In Mandeville
The historic Dew Drop Jazz & Social Hall in Mandeville, built in 1895, is back this spring with a full season of concerts presenting traditional jazz and blues, funky swamp pop and Cajun music—with a few surprises along the way. For the six Saturday night evening concerts a variety of genres will be showcased by some of the region’s most notable musicians.

May 21 | Two unique bands will perform one set each, starting with Doucet Frères, featuring the famed brother duo of Michael and David Doucet, of the Grammy-Award winning Cajun band, BeauSoleil. The Doucet family name is known for making Cajun music a popular genre within the world music scene. The second set will showcase Michael Doucet’s new Cajun dance band, Lâcher Prise Trio, with Doucet on fiddle, and both Sarah Quintana and Chad Viator on guitar. The name Lâcher Prise means to “let go” and blends Cajun, swamp soul, and Gypsy tunes that celebrate love and the simple joys of having a good time.
Presented by the Friends of the Dew Drop, these Saturday evening concerts will run from 6:30 to 9:00p.m. and will feature home-cooked food for purchase provided by the Ladies of First Free Mission Baptist Church, located next door. Soft drinks, water, beer and wine will be available for purchase. Admission for each concert is $10 cash per adult. Students and children may attend free of charge. No outside food, drinks or pets are allowed and lawn chairs may be used outside the hall on the grounds.
The history of the Dew Drop Inn begins in 1885 when a group of civic-minded African American residents of the Mandeville, led by the late Olivia Eunio, created the Dew Drop Social and Benevolent Association. A decade later, in 1895, the organization laid a cornerstone and constructed a small wooden building two and one-half blocks from Lake Pontchartrain on Lamarque Street.
The Association, like many created among African American residents following the Civil War, had chiefly benevolent goals—to care for the sick, provide help with funeral arrangements, food & temporary housing—all during a time when Black residents could not obtain various types of insurance. Today, known as one of the oldest, unaltered rural jazz halls in the U.S. the not-for-profit organization, Friends of the Dew Drop, schedules and manages the hall’s performances and educational activities.
Red Bull Dance Your Style is a global all-styles street dance event series with a unique battle format. From hip hop to house, to locking to popping – dancers participating in Red Bull Dance Your Style will need to ‘wow’ the crowd and ultimately win their vote. Testing freestyle and musicality skills through unpredictable mainstream tracks ranging from recent global hits to classic beats, Red Bull Dance Your Style will have the crowd deciding who will rule the dance floor.

JPAS presents Ira Levin's murder mystery filled with plot twists, humor and much more than meets the eye.

Comfortably ensconced in his charming Connecticut home, Sidney Bruhl, a successful writer of Broadway thrillers, is struggling to overcome a dry spell which has resulted in a string of failures and a shortage of funds. A possible break in his fortunes occurs when he receives a script from a student in the seminar he has been conducting at a nearby college—a thriller that Sidney recognizes immediately as a potential Broadway smash. Sidney’s plan, devised with his wife’s help, is to offer collaboration to the student for co-credit. Or is it? "Deathtrap" provides twists and turns of devilish cleverness, and offers hilariously sudden shocks in such abundance that audiences will be spellbound until the very last moment.

COVID CONCERNS: A gradual but persistent rise in coronavirus cases in Louisiana is beginning to raise concerns among residents and prompt  new warnings from health officials in New Orleans. The increases are not yet of the magnitude seen in the five prior waves of the pandemic, when sudden and rapid spread of the virus sent case counts and hospitalizations rocketing higher. Instead, the state is now seeing counts grow slowly over the course of weeks, as highly infectious strains of the omicron variant spread out across the state.

NATIONAL STRAWBERRIES AND CREAM DAY | May 21
Each year on May 21st, we combine two favorites for a celebration on National Strawberries and Cream Day. Fresh strawberries and homemade whipped cream is a must when strawberries are in season. They are the perfect, refreshing, light snack on a beautifully warm day!

With these bright red berries in season, it should be no surprise that it’s also National Strawberry Month. Strawberries are a very healthy snack as they are low-fat, low in calories, and an excellent source of vitamin C, fiber, folic acid, and potassium.
Strawberries grow all over the world. Not only are they delicious, but they are also fragrant. With over 600 varieties, we have quite a few to choose from, too.
While strawberries and cream makes a great dessert, it can also be eaten for breakfast or a snack. You can also add a little granola for texture. If you enjoy chocolate, drizzle a little on top. No matter how you enjoy your strawberries, you just cannot go wrong with this treat.
NATIONAL WAITSTAFF DAY | MAY 21
On May 21st, National Waitstaff Day recognizes the dedicated and often talented waitstaff. We are encouraged to show appreciation to all waitstaff for making our dining experiences enjoyable. At the same time, restaurant owners and managers also recognize and express their appreciation for their team of waitstaff. They help restaurants thrive.

Waitstaff, servers, are a big determining factor in the quality of your dining encounter. They serve as the communicator between the diner and the kitchen. While meeting the needs of several tables at once, they also represent the restaurant. Seasoned waitstaff are knowledgeable and efficient. They also sh They are key to creating an extraordinary dining experience. The food may be delicious, but their attentiveness and attitude can make or change the whole experience.
Most waitstaff go out of their way to ensure you receive excellent service and ensure that you have the best time possible. They fill your drinks before you ask, bring extra bread, rolls or chips, give honest recommendations on food choices when asked, and are a valuable asset to any restaurant. Excellent servers turn diners into regulars who are known by name.

Derby Gisclair
A bit of detective work for Steamboat Saturday, from the archives of the Library of Congress we have this enlargement of a stereographic photograph titled “Steamboat at the Landing, New Orleans, LA” given a date range from 1890 to 1900. The title is handwritten and there is no attribution as to the photographer or publisher. The image was colorized for better viewing.
The scene itself is probably fairly typical for a steamboat – the lower deck packed with cargo in wooden crates, barrels, and burlap sacks. A number of workers may be seen loading the vessel. Behind the barrels, beneath the raised canvas covering fixed below the roof, is a cache of wood destined to feed the ship’s boilers during the voyage. All in all, a fairly typical scene. But can we identify the boat?
Along the forward roofline just below the two black smokestacks is a horizontal sign that reads “N.O. River Line” on a white plank with rounded ends. Also, on the far right on the side of the pilot house is a partial name with only four letters – “ELEO.” The first name that comes to mind is “Eleonore,” but the only vessel registered by that name was not built until 1902. There was, however, a vessel named “Eleonora” that was built in 1865 than ran the New Orleans to Shreveport route, but she sank in February 1868 below Shreveport and was never raised. So now we are back to square one. Or are we?
Suppose the fourth letter is something other than an “O” as a small portion of the right side of the letter is out of the frame. If the four letters were “ELEC” we would have two boats to consider – the Elector and the Electra. The Elector was built in 1866 but never sailed on the Mississippi before she was dismantled in 1881. That leaves the Electra.
The Electra was built at Jeffersonville, Indiana by the Howard Ship Yards in 1897 for Captain George L. White for the Red River Line, running the New Orleans to Shreveport route. The Red River Line, which had been established in 1874, eventually failed in 1904 and their fleet and property was sold at auction in December 1904. The Electra was sold for $4,300 to the Ryman Steamboat Company and taken north to run the Columbia River between Paducah and Burnside, Kentucky.

Within the French Quarter in 1922, a pianist entertains with his portable-wheeled piano as Italian kids gather round sparked by the excitement. This certainly has to spark our own attention, recalling those unusual days with unusual things happening around our neighborhoods as youths -even if it featured the "ice cream man" peddling his large tricycle or a monkey-grinder fascinating us with his trained pet.

The Six Blanches
at THNOC
The Six Blanches, an in-gallery theatrical experience exploring one of American drama’s most iconic characters, opens tonight inside the exhibition Backstage at “A Streetcar Named Desire.”
Surrounded by images and objects that tell the story Tennessee Williams’s News Orleans–made masterpiece — including the Oscar statue awarded to Vivien Leigh for her performance as Blanche DuBois in the 1951 film adaptation of Streetcar — six actors will focus on different parts of Blanche’s character: Grief, Magic, Tenderness, Panic, Desire, and Fantasy.
Visitors will get a window into the theatrical process, as each actor will be performing short excerpts from the play, as if they are preparing for a performance, rehearsal, and an audition for the Blanche role. Audience members may roam the exhibition visiting Blanches and exhibition displays in whatever order they choose.
The production, offered May 18, 19, 22, and 25, is presented by The Historic New Orleans Collection in partnership with The Tennessee Williams Theatre Company of New Orleans and Loyola University New Orleans Department of Theatre Arts & Dance. Queen Nefertari’s Egypt
New Orleans Museum of Art

Public

The queen is coming.  "Queen Nefertari's Egypt" is on view through July 17, 2022, at NOMA.

Queen Nefertari, the royal wife of Pharaoh Ramesses II (reigned 1279–13 BCE), is linked to some of the most magnificent monuments of ancient Egypt. Appearing in sculpture and images, and identified in inscriptions on buildings associated with Ramesses II, she is also known through a complete temple consecrated to her in Abu Simbel, beside the one dedicated to her husband. Her tomb is the largest and most richly decorated in the Valley of the Queens. It was discovered in the early 20th century by a team of archaeologists led by Ernesto Schiaparelli, then director of the Museo Egizio in Turin.
The team’s discoveries and the role of Nefertari and other powerful women in ancient Egypt are brought to life through the 230 exceptional objects in this exhibition, drawn from the collection of the Museo Egizio. These include statues, jewelry, vases, papyrus, steles, wooden coffins, and stone sarcophagi, as well as tools and various items of daily life from the artisan village of Deir-el-Medina, home to those who created the royal tombs. These astonishing treasures showcase the legacy of the royal wives, sisters, daughters, and mothers of pharaohs, and sometimes even pharaohs themselves, as well as the artists who contributed to the creation of these stunning objects.
__
Queen Nefertari’s Egypt is organized by the Museo Egizio, Turin, and StArt, in collaboration with the New Orleans Museum of Art. The presentation in New Orleans is made possible by the generous support of the Eugenie and Joseph Jones Family Foundation and the Consulate General of Italy in Houston

Whether seen on HBO’s Treme or at their legendary Tuesday night gig at The Maple Leaf, Grammy-winning Rebirth Brass Band is a true New Orleans institution. Formed in 1983 by the Frazier brothers, the band has evolved from playing the streets of the French Quarter to playing festivals and stages all over the world. While committed to upholding the tradition of brass bands, they’ve also extended themselves into the realms of funk and hip-hop to create their signature sound. “Rebirth can be precise whenever it wants to,” says The New York Times, “but it’s more like a party than a machine. It’s a working model of the New Orleans musical ethos: as long as everybody knows what they’re doing, anyone can cut loose.” In the wake of the sometimes- stringent competition amongst New Orleans brass bands, Rebirth is the undisputed leader of the pack, and they show no signs of slowing down
