In  two weeks, the decision could be made on whether New Orleans will host a record eleventh Super Bowl.

City officials sent  official bids to the NFL this week.

Officials hope a new field at Tulane University, which would be used for practice, and improvements to the Mercedes-Benz Superdome will bring Super Bowl LII (52) to the city in 2018.

The 2018 game would also coincide with New Orleans' tri-centennial.

NFL owners will vote on a host city on May 20.

Peche Seafood Grill in New Orleans was named the country's Best New Restaurant by the James Beard Foundation at its annual awards gala held Monday night (May 5) in New York City.

Ryan Prewitt, Peche's chef and co-owner, was named Best Chef: South in a tie with fellow New Orleanian Sue Zemanick, of Gautreau's and Ivy.

Peche, which opened last spring, is owned by three chefs: Donald Link, Stephen Stryjewski and Prewitt, who serves as Peche's executive chef. Both Link and Stryjewski have won Best Chef: South awards in years past

GiveNOLA Day Raises an Astonishing $2,264,436 in first year

19,623 generous contributions in just 24 hours to 309 nonprofit organizations

(May 7, 2014|New Orleans, LA)  A local philanthropic movement was ignited with the launch of GiveNOLA Day on May 6 culminating in 19,623 gifts and $2,264,436 million raised for regional nonprofit organizations. GiveNOLA Day totals and other data are preliminary and the Greater New Orleans Foundation will continue to release more detailed results on www.gnof.org.

"This is an incredible testament to our community's generosity," said Albert Ruesga, president and CEO of the Greater New Orleans Foundation. "We came together as one to support our nonprofit organizations that do so much to help build a healthy community for all."

During this first-ever 24-hour online event, powered by social media, people made donations to one or more of the 309 nonprofit organizations profiled on www.GiveNOLA.com.  Every dollar donated on GiveNOLA Day was stretched with additional "lagniappe" dollars provided by the Greater New Orleans Foundation and its generous GiveNOLA Day sponsors. The total amount in the Lagniappe Fund was $226,000.

Additionally, thanks to Boh Brothers, GiveNOLA Day's lead sponsor, and other generous sponsors, awards and prizes totaling $96,000 were awarded throughout the 24-hour period.

Cash awards were given to both large and small organizations that raised the most money and got the largest number of unique donors.

The three large nonprofits raising the most money were Ogden Museum of Southern Art, Second Harvest Food Bank, and Louise S. McGehee School.

The top three small nonprofits receiving the most amount raised were Spaymart, Start the Adventure in Reading, and Orleans Public Education Network.

(Large nonprofits have operating budgets of a $1 million or more, while smaller nonprofits are those operating on less than $1 million.)

Additionally, 24 nonprofits won Rock-Around-the-Clock prizes when their organizations were randomly selected for $1,000 hourly prizes.

Participating nonprofits mobilized their supporters, primarily through social media and online communications, to give on GiveNOLA Day. The one-day of giving was supported by a publicity campaign that included ads in print and online, and a broadcast commercial with a song written by local musician Allen Toussaint.

Presenting sponsors were Boh Brothers; Gillis, Ellis & Baker; Merrill Lynch; the Greater New OrleansFoundation, and the Shell Beach Fund.

Supporting sponsors were All American Grease Services Corporation, Baldwin & Haspel, Bellwether Technology, the Boettcher Fund, the Lemle Fund, and the Zemurray Foundation.

Local nonprofits that wish to participate in GiveNOLA Day next year are encouraged to sign up for the Greater New Orleans Foundation's e-newsletter to receive 2015 information.

Adventures in Wonderland - Local theatre company The NOLA Project hosts an exciting interactive new take on Lewis Carroll's classic world of Alice in Wonderland at the Besthoff Sculpture Garden, May 7-25. Visitors are invited to go on an adventure, as members of the audience will either take a stroll, a quick walk or sit down for a tea party with characters including the Red Queen, the Cheshire Cat and the Mad Hatter. Tickets are available in advance, and are $18 for adults and $12 for NOMA members, students and children.

The fantastic kingdom of Wonderland first sprang from Lewis Carroll's mind while babysitting three young girls on an afternoon boat ride.

This May, NOMA and The NOLA Project invite you to step into Wonderland as you chase its eccentric characters around NOMA's Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden, or simply take a seat at the maddest tea party in town. The NOLA Project, the theatre company that has brought Shakespeare to life in the garden for the last few years, will divide the audience in thirds, taking each group on a stupendously smart and silly adventure through Wonderland. NOLA Project playwright Pete McElligott and director Andrew Larimer (A Midsummer Night's Dream) have created a promenade production unlike anything ever experienced in New Orleans. No two visits to Wonderland will be the same! Adventures in Wonderland will run May 7-25 in the Besthoff Sculpture Garden at NOMA.

The Cheshire Cat's Fast Track: Better be quick on your feet as you follow Alice and her sly guide the Cheshire Cat through the upside-down world of Wonderland. This track moves somewhat quickly as Alice is sent from place to place searching for the culprit who stole the Red Queen's tarts! The Mad Hatter's Sit-Down Tea Party: Come join us for an utterly silly tea party!  An Evening of Sondheim Marks First Musical Outing for Promethean Theatre Co.

Area Premiere of Marry Me, a Little Marks New Milestone for Young Company

Opening May 8th at Mid City Theatre, Promethean presents an evening featuring the lesser-known work of one of America's greatest living composer, Stephen Sondheim. Using several of the artist's rarer material, Marry Me, a Little tells a charming and bittersweet tale of love, loneliness, and survival as a single young person living in contemporary New Orleans.

The plot, told solely through song, tells the story of two strangers home alone on either side of a Bywater shotgun apartment on a Saturday night. They pass their time with sweet secrets, unshared fantasies, and melancholy regrets; never knowing that they're just a wall away from each other and the end of their loneliness.

Conceived and developed by Craig Lucas and Norman Rene, the show features music primarily cut from other Sondheim shows including Saturday Night, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Anyone Can Whistle, Company, Follies, A Little Night Music, and Into the Woods.   Promethean's production will be the New Orleans premiere of the piece,

The production will be directed by Promethean's Artistic Director, Stephen M. Eckert and star Ashley Rose Butler and Aaron Lind, last seen in HAIR at Le Petit. Leah Farelly will design set while Brian Debs will handle lights and sound. Tory Gordan music directs with Glenn Aucoin providing accompaniment.

"I couldn't be more excited to be working on a piece of musical theatre," say's Eckert, "particularly something by Stephen Sondheim. Marry Me, a Little provides such a solid foundation to build and experiment from, and I can't wait to get to work. It also is a piece that hits close to home, being a terminally-single young person myself."

The Andrews Brothers

Weekends, May 9- June 8, 2014

"I could say 'Bella, bella,' even 'Sehr wunderbar,' but each language only helps to tell just how grand and charming The Andrews Brothers is." - Theodore P. Mahne, NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune

Don't miss our latest fun-filled musical comedy at the Stage Door Canteen! Mistaken identities, madcap comedy, romance and musical treasures come together in this sweet and hilarious show.

It's 1943 in the South Pacific and, tonight, The Andrews Sisters headline the big USO show. But when a flu outbreak quarantines the girls, stagehands Max, Lawrence and Patrick, along with pin-up girl Peggy Jones, hatch a plan to save the day! Featuring over 25 songs made famous by the Andrew Sisters, including Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy, Slow Boat to China, Don't Sit Under the Apple Tree, and Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate the Positive, this show has it all!

Plus you can add fine dining from Chef John Besh and the American Sector restaurant to complete your evening.

Brass-A-Holics

@ 10pm

In the year 2010, a brand new sound was born. The Brass-A-Holics Band and the Go-Go Brass Funk genre joined the ranks of the time honored traditions, culture and music that have come out of the city of New Orleans.

Our ensemble consists of the core New Orleans brass elements - add in a full drum set, percussions, keyboard, and an electric guitar, and this kick ass "Go-Go Brass Funk" band called the "Brass-A-Holics" comes to life before your eyes and ears. The Brass-A-Holics Go-Go Brass Funk band has transcended the traditional world of brass band music. Where else can you hear Miles Davis, Nirvana, John Coltrane, Wham, Cyndi Lauper, Kanye West, and Louis Armstrong all in one set?

Although there are differences in culture, style, and swagger within this band, the members of the Brass-A-Holics collectively bring to you a unique sound that is unparalleled to anything you have ever heard!

Saturday, May 10th

Johnny Sansone

@ 10pm

From New Orleans to the world, Johnny Sansone is known for his blistering electric harmonica tone, award winning song writing, swamp-roots, Americana accordion and larger than life stage presence. Johnny's music career has brought him from his early professional years backing up Chicago blues legends, Jimmy Rodgers, Robert Jr Lockwood and John Lee Hooker to fronting Ronnie Earl's Broadcasters in the 1980's.  In the 1990's he was in the front seat to help pioneer the new brand of roots music that was brewing up in New Orleans with bands like the Iguana's, Anders Osborne and the Subdudes. Now, after a Grammy nomination, nine Blues Music award nominations (including winning song of the year in 2012), a Juno award, fifteen Best of the Beat awards, seven Big Easy awards, Johnny continues to forge forward on world wide tours with his band, as a solo artist and as a member of New Orleans super group, The Voice of The Wetlands All Stars, featuring the leading legends of New Orleans music , including Dr. John, Cyril Neville, and Tab Benoit . From playing with The Edge (U2), to Recording Changui music in Santiago Cuba with soprano sax great Jane Bunnett, to backing up one of America's greatest song writer Randy Newman, plus film scores for Rodger Coreman, HBO's Treme and countless other sessions, Johnny continues to show no limit to his life's work and love of music.

The Open Ears Music Series consists of weekly concerts of interesting music, often of the improvised variety. The performances are on Tuesdays, upstairs at The Blue Nile, 532 Frenchmen St. New Orleans, LA

All shows are scheduled to start at 10:30 PM, and will likely be finished by midnight or shortly thereafter, so don't be too late.

There is a $10 suggested donation.

Arthur Miller's  classic  Death of a Salesman, the first Pulitzer Prize-winning script to be produced by Le Petit Thtre du Vieux Carr in recent memory, takes the stage this Friday, May 9, for eleven performances.

Le Petit's board of governors is committed to producing a Pulitzer prize-winning script each season as part of the community theatre's commitment to theatre education.   Death of a Salesman has been considered an American classic since it was first performed in 1949.

Directed by Amy Holtcamp, local actor George Sanchez (above, center) stars as Willy Loman, a traveling salesman who struggles to achieve the American Dream in a story that weaves together complex issues of family and success. It is a thrilling work of deep and revealing beauty that is widely regarded as one of the greatest American plays ever written.

Other lead cast members include Mary Pauley as Linda Loman, Garrett Prejean as Biff Loman, (above, right) Chris Marroy (above, left) as Happy Loman, Ron Gural as Ben Loman and Casey Groves as Charlie. "I've been struck by how much I relate to Willy Loman," Holtcamp stated.  "It's a play about a man who looks around and realizes that all of those dreams he's had for the future might not come true. The future is here and none of it has materialized. It's also shocking how relevant  the play is to a modern audience. I think after the most recent economic collapse, we are all wondering if the American Dream is still a reality."

Ticket prices range from $30 - $50 and may be purchased online by clicking here  or  at www.lepetittheatre.com

The CAC will present a theatrical performance by actor Julian Sands in dedication to one of the most influential and controversial dramatists of our time, recipient of the 2005 Nobel Prize for Literature, Harold Pinter. The CAC's Freeport-McMoRan Theater provides an intimate setting that allows the audience to commune with the late Pinter as channeled with affection, humor, and insight through Sands as he shares Pinter's little-known poetry. This is an evening of Homeric theater with an extraordinary actor, great words, and an audience. Devoid of pretension or glittery trappings, A Celebration of Harold Pinter gets to the soul of the man-poet, playwright, husband, political activist, Nobel winner, mortal. A Celebration of Harold Pinter was nominated for a 2013 Drama Desk Award.

The late Harold Pinter's writing career spanned more than fifty years. One of the most influential and controversial modern dramatists, Pinter wrote more than twenty-nine plays and some twenty-one screenplays. His plays include Betrayal, No Man's Land, Old Times, The Caretaker, The Birthday Party, A Kind of Alaska, and the Tony Award-winning The Homecoming. Pinter was also a noted director, actor, poet, and political activist.

When the late dramatist was too sick to read his poetry at a benefit, he asked critically acclaimed actor Julian Sands to sub for him. He also demanded that the finely tuned British actor prepare by taking an extended master class with the celebrated writer himself. Not surprisingly, Sands was thrilled.

The CAC's Freeport-McMoRan Theater provides a spectacularly intimate way to commune with the master of human mysteries, as channeled with affection, humor and insight through Sands. While sharing Pinter's little-known poetry, he touches on the playwright's thoughts and writings about art, truth, politics and his love for his second wife, writer-historian Antonia Fraser.

Academy Award Nominee John Malkovich, who co-starred with Sands in The Killing Fields and is a founding member of the Steppenwolf Theatre in Chicago, directed this celebrated solo for the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2011.

British actor Julian Sands is frequently seen world-wide in films, on stage, and on television. He trained in London at The Central School of Speech and Drama and has appeared in over 100 films including The Killing Fields, A Room With A View, Impromptu, Leaving Las Vegas, Arachnophobia, Oceans 13, and The Girl With A Dragon Tattoo. On television, he is best known for his role on 24 but has also been seen on Smallville, Ghost Whisperer, Dexter, and Banshee.

Julian Sands

Julian Sands was born in Yorkshire, England. Wanting to be an actor from an early age he was able to gain experience in many school productions before attending the renowned Central School of Speech and Drama in London. Though he first anticipated a career in classical theatre, it was his work in film that led to his early successes.

Julian Sands has appeared in such films as the Oscar nominated The Killing Fields, A Room With A View, Vatel, Leaving Las Vegas, and The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo and is notable for his roles in Warlock, Boxing Helena, Impromptu, Oceans 13, Arachnophobia and scores of other films. He just completed the film Six Dance Lessons in Six Weeks. In addition, he has appeared in many European and American art films working with distinguished directors such as Paul Schrader, Wim Wenders, and The Tavianni Brothers. Throughout his career, he has established himself as both a romantic lead as well as an edgy character actor.

Television appearances include 24, the iconic Jor-El in Smallville, and as the James Bond of ghost busters in Stephen King's Rose Red. Most recently he filmed roles on Dexter and Banshee. His theatre and radio work is also extensive and diverse. Julian was honored for playing Tony Blair in David Hare's Stuff Happens at the Mark Taper Forum, and performed opposite Annette Benning in Female of the Species at The Geffen in Los Angeles. His work in A Celebration of Harold Pinter has been praised since it debuted at The Edinburgh Festival, earning a prestigious 2013 Drama Desk Award nomination in New York.

IT'S ALIVE IN NEW ORLEANS!

Rivertown Theaters for the Performing Arts Presents the Premier Local Production of Young Frankenstein May 9 - 24

From the creators of the record-breaking Broadway sensation THE PRODUCERS

Comes this monster new musical comedy

Under the direction of multi-talented performer, director and theatrical creator, Ricky Graham, and starring Rivertown Theaters' co-artistic director, Gary Rucker, Young Frankenstein, will debut in New Orleans May 9 - 24, closing out the 2014 Spring line-up on the theater's Main Stage.  The multi-award winning musical, with the Book by Mel Brooks and Thomas Meehan and Music & Lyrics by Brooks, is an inspired re-imagining of Mel Brooks' classic comedy movie masterpiece.

The story follows young Dr. Frankenstein (that's Fronkensteen) as he attempts to complete his grandfather's masterwork and bring a corpse to life.  Together with his oddly shaped and endearing helper Igor (that's Eyegor), his curvaceous lab assistant Inga, and in spite of his self-involved madcap fiance Elizabeth, Frankenstein succeeds in creating a monster - but not without scary and quite often hilarious complications.

With such memorable tunes as "The Transylvania Mania," "He Vas My Boyfriend" and "Puttin' On The Ritz, " YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN is scientifically-proven, monstrously good entertainment...and the only place the audience will witness a singing and dancing laboratory experiment in the largest tuxedo ever made.

STEM Saturdays with Dr. Calvin Mackie Presents

ROCKETS!

Sponsored by the Boeing Company

Guest Speaker-NASA Astronaut Jeanette J. Epps, Ph.D.

NASA Astronaut Jeanette J. Epps, Ph.D.

NEW ORLEANS - On Saturday, May 10, 2014, STEM NOLA will sponsor its fifth in a series of "STEM Saturdays with Dr. Calvin Mackie" at the Joe W. Brown Recreation Center, 5601 Read Blvd in New Orleans East. The three-hour session, beginning at 9 a.m., will offer hands-on activities for children to build and launch rockets of all kinds: paper, air-pump, water-propelled, Alka-Seltzer-propelled and engine-propelled.  The special guest speaker for this STEM Saturday is someone who can further illuminate the subject of rockets, NASA Astronaut  Dr. Jeanette J. Epps.

"We are extremely excited about having Dr. Epps partner with STEM NOLA," said Dr. Calvin Mackie. "Just her presence will provide the children of New Orleans with further exposure to the possibilities before them and provide the inspiration and motivation for their dreams,"  he said. Dr. Epps recently graduated from Astronaut Candidate Training with intensive instruction in International Space Station systems, Extravehicular Activity (EVA), robotics, physiological training, T-38 flight training and water and wilderness survival training.

The industry leader in aerospace, The Boeing Company, is a primary sponsor of STEM NOLA. Boeing's Director of Operations Rick Navarro said sponsoring STEM Saturdays helps to ensure the company will have home-grown engineers in the future.  "Boeing is building the largest rocket ever built, the Space Launch System, at NASA in Michoud. We support programs like STEM NOLA because they expose students and communities to interactive, project-based opportunities in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. We believe STEM education can and will transform lives and sustain communities," he said. The Boeing Company, the leading manufacturer of commercial jetliners and defense, space and security systems, will sponsor 50 free slots at STEM for kids who attend school on free and reduced lunch vouchers.

"I would like to thank The Boeing Company," Dr. Mackie said, "for supporting the effort to expose our children to the careers of the future and allow them to meet STEM professionals who are working in our community on the Space Launch System built at the NASA Michoud facility."

On Saturday, STEM Professionals and college students will work with children on projects that will teach the fundamentals of how to build and launch rockets. The activities are aimed at teaching children the engineering design process and teamwork.

"RUN TO REMEMBER" HONORS FALLEN HEROES ON MAY 10

Charitable 5K to Support The Coast Guard Foundation

(New Orleans, LA) The New Orleans community will gather along with local Coast Guard members on Saturday, May 10th to run or walk five kilometers in honor of fallen Coast Guard members who died while protecting our homeland, rescuing those in peril and enforcing maritime law. The charitable 5K is known as a "Run to Remember."

The New Orleans "Run to Remember" course starts from shelter one on scenic Lakeshore Drive and runs 2.5 kilometers East to the turnaround at Beauregard Avenue and back to shelter one. Participants will receive a commemorative t-shirt, water from Kentwood Springs and jambalaya from Mr. B's Bistro. A "Run to Remember" is sponsored by Freeport McMoRan Oil & Gas, LLC, Bollinger Shipyards, and Canal Barge Co.

In 2013, more than 5,400 people gathered to honor fallen Coast Guard heroes at 63 different events across the globe. Since its inception, a "Run to Remember" has raised more than $50,000 to support the men and women of the Coast Guard and their families. Most important is that the events have honored the brave individuals who gave their lives so that others may live.

All proceeds generated from a "Run to Remember" go towards supporting the Coast Guard Foundation. The Coast Guard Foundation funds various programs such as the Fallen Heroes Scholarship Fund which provides support and education to the families of Guardsmen who have passed while serving their country.

For additional information or to register online, please visit our Facebook page at CGF Run to Remember: New Orleans.

St. Augustine Church Sunday Mass

 featuring the Soulful Voices Choir

10am

at historic St. Augustine Church

1210 Gov Nichols

corner of St. Claude in the Treme

New Orleans

Sunday at 10:00 a. m., we celebrate Mass in a way that only New Orleanians can. Our Soulful Voices Choir opens the service as we sing and clap in both prayer and praise. After the readings, Rev. Quentin Moody, our charismatic, Belizean priest, delivers a homily that you will not soon forget. Sometimes solemn, and sometimes playful, Moody always preaches the Word in a way that touches people of all faiths.

Later, during the offering of the sign of peace, parishioners mill through the pews, hugging, kissing, and giving each other blessings.

After communion, visitors are asked to introduce themselves, but not before we sing happy birthday to those celebrating that week. After Mass is over, our choir continues to sing and

to perform as it does throughout the service: soulfully and joyfully. Performing a mix of gospel, jazz, and spiritual tunes, the choir pairs radiant voices with the piano, drums, the saxophone, the tambourine, and  the occasional trumpet

Dear friend,

JOIN Nathalie Gomes Adams and Laura Manning

to learn the Shim Sham for FREE!

Nathalie and Laura want to teach the Shim Sham to as many people as possible in the hopes that they'll join in celebrating Frankie Manning Centennial as part of the MindSteppers Dance Championship in the early evening of Friday, May 16 at the Lyons Center in New Orleans.

See Shim Sham video here.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g_k_BIA_unI

Choose from two dates, or attend both if you need a refresher:

May 11: Dancing Grounds, 3705 St Claude, NOLA 3:00-4:30pm

We're putting on two separate workshops, both with a suggested donation of $10, but FREE for anyone who cannot afford it - honestly, we just want to have as many people dancing as possible on the night of the 16th. And if you can afford the donation, it goes far...it's there to help cover the costs of the Dance Championship - which is FREE to competitors and ALL guests - but costs a lot to put on. The event will have LIVE music, a dance competition for public school students, dance demos and more. :) More info here and on the Facebook invite here. www.mindsteppers.com

Greetings!

Fun facts brought to you by the RT BOOKLOVERS Convention:

**New York Times Bestselling author Sylvia Day's Crossfire series out sold E.L. James' Fifty Shades of Grey series by almost ten million copies.

**Critics are anticipating that Divergent will be the next big hit at the box office. The movie is based on the popular series by YA novelist Veronica Roth.

**Rizzoli and Isles begins its fifth season this summer. Viewers can thank author, Tess Gerritsen, for creating this series.

Meet these authors and 700 more at the 31st annual RT BOOKLOVERS Convention.

The convention kicks off with a salute to pioneers whose perseverance led to the creation of the multicultural romance genre in the late 1980s. Be there as the RT BOOKLOVERS Convention honors Sandra Kitt, Beverly Jenkins, and Brenda Jackson among others. Publishers took notice and opened the door for hundreds of African-American authors to weave stories with people of color as hero and heroines.

The excitement takes place at the Marriott Hotel on Canal Street, May 13th -18th, 2014.

Book your author and convention interviews today, and don't forget about live broadcasts. It's going to be crazy and you won't want to miss it.

Pot Luck String Band: Our third house band focuses on traditional Americana with an emphasis on bluegrass. Besides strong instrumentation and vocals, the band's leader Van Glynn always offers some fine historical notes on the songs.

Hanalena: These two sisters have developed a wonderful blend of bluegrass, and country music. They are currently based in Nashville, but are well traveled and have performed in some prestigious venues. They offer a great stage presence and their harmonies blend perfectly. They follow in the footsteps of singing sibling duets that possess the genetic blending that can only come from siblings.

Lost in the Holler: If you are a fan of very traditional American music, these people will be a real treat. They are yet another group who have displayed their talents on the streets of New Orleans. When they contacted us, and we listened to their music, it was an easy decision to invite them to perform at the Opry.

The Dapper Dandies: This is a returning group to our stage. They performed at our annual Music and Arts Festival in the past and were well received by the crowds. If you are a fan of traditional New Orleans Jazz, you will love this group.

Please don't forget that following every show, many of our musicians gather at the Abita Brew Pub to jam. Some of the best music performed on Opry nights has been at this after-the-show jam. It allows a blending of some really great musicians to play in an informal atmosphere, and some really great and unique stuff has come out of those jams

EXCITING WEEKEND OF EVENTS FOR CONFEDERACY OF DUNCES FANS

CONTACT:  Marti Luke, Event Coordinator, 225-572-5959 martiluke@reagan.com

The first weekend in June will be an exciting one for A Confederacy of Dunces fans in South Louisiana.  A Confederacy of Dunces is the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by New Orleans author, John Kennedy Toole, who took his own life in 1969 before the book was published.  Since publication in 1980, the book has been awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Literature in 1981, sold over 1.5 million copies, and been translated into 18 languages.

Much of the story of Toole, the creation of his masterpiece and its tortured path to publication has been a mystery until the publication of Butterfly in the Typewriter by Cory MacLauchlin in 2012.  Butterfly is an exhaustive biography of Toole and the detailed story of Confederacy's creation to publication and beyond.

In 2010, another exceptional work of art, The Omega Point, an award-winning  documentary by Louisiana filmmaker Joe Sanford of Pelican Pictures.   According to Sanford, the film "traces Mr. Toole's old-line, New Orleans family with a narrative woven neatly through interviews with associates of the author and scholars seeking the truth to his life story.  The film leads you to one "fatal moment (in which) the world lost a great observer of mankind and a brilliant author in his prime".

On June 7-8, lovers of A Confederacy of Dunces can feast on two exceptional events both guaranteed to deepen their love of the novel and increase their understanding of the author's life and death.

On Saturday, June 7, Ignatius' Escape from Baton Rouge Bus Tour will retrace the steps of Confederacy protagonist, Igtnatius Reilly's bus trip back to New Orleans after a disastrous job interview in Baton Rouge.  Butterfly author, Cory MacLauchlin will guide participants through John K Toole's New Orleans from the Toole Collection at Tulane University Library, to several of Toole's favorite watering holes in the French Quarter, Toole's gravesite and finally for a private tour of The Lucky Dog Warehouse and a chance to feast on the iconic Lucky Dog, a Confederacy "character" itself.  Along the way, MacLauchlin will regale you with little know facts and tales about Toole, his life and his literary masterpiece.

The cost of the Tour is $100 (plus processing fees) per person and includes all transportation, meals, tours and presentations at the JKT Collection and Lucky Dog Warehouse.  Seating is limited.  Tickets may be purchase from The Manship Theatre Ticket Office.

The Ignatius Escape Tour on Saturday will be followed on Sunday, June 8 with a 3 PM Matinee screening of The Omega Point documentary which will include a presentation by filmmaker, Joe Sanford and by Butterfly author, Cory MacLauchlin.  There will also be the opportunity to purchase Butterfly in the Typewriter and have it signed by the author.  Tickets for The Omega Point are$10 per person and also available at the Manship Theatre Ticket Office.

The Manship Ticket Office is located at 100 Lafayette Street, Downtown Baton Rouge. Tickets may be purchased in person at the Theatre.  By phone: 225-344-0334, Toll Free: 866-451-2787 or online www.manshiptheatre.org

New Orleans Wine & Food Experience announces 2014 Seminar Series

NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA - The New Orleans Wine & Food Experience is excited to announce it's 2014 Seminar Series, as part of the four-day event which takes place May 21 - 24, 2014. As NOWFE celebrates its 22nd year it continues to bring together world-renowned winemakers, celebrated chefs and industry insiders in a showcase of signature events and seminars designed to educate, entertain and inspire.

The 2014 Seminar Series attendees will discover the hottest trends in wine and food with seminars such as "I Get a Kick from Crmant," learn why Crmant is not just an afterthought or a necessary alternative; "Tour d'Grand Cru," a rare tasting opportunity at which the President of Louis Latour, Bernard Retornaz, will walk attendees through each of the wines, commenting on their superior quality and vintage-specific characteristics; and "Dj Vu in the Vieux Carr," focusing on the French Quarter's revitalization, renovation and revision of some of the city's most revered dining establishments, as well as newer restaurants that now call a storied Vieux Carr address home.

The 2014 event also includes Wine Dinners hosted by more than 30 New Orleans area restaurants and visiting wine makers; Vinola, NOWFE's premium tasting event; the Royal Street Stroll presented by Rouses, NOWFE's signature event set in the heart of the French Quarter. The weekend culminates with Grand Tastings on Friday and Saturday with a collection of more than 75 chefs under one roof and winemakers and purveyors from approximately 175 wineries showcasing over 1000 wines and serving culinary bites from our region. In addition, at the Saturday Grand Tasting the 8th annual Louisiana Seafood Cook-Off hosted by the Louisiana Seafood Promotion & Marketing Board will crown the "King or Queen of Louisiana Seafood," who will then represent Louisiana in the eighth annual Great American Seafood Cook-Off. This year also marks the third year for the Big Gateaux Show, a pastry competition and tasting at which spectacularly designed cakes will be paired with several high end champagnes, Prosecco, spirits and liqueurs, and celebrity judges and attendees will choose a winner of the $5000 cash prize, courtesy of Swiss Chalet.

Other seminars of the 2014 series include:

Fresh and Dried:  The charming Tony Apostolakos of Masi will lead the way through the fresh and dried components of Masi Agricola's Masianco Pinot Grigio, Bonacosta Valpolicella, Campofiorin and Costasera Amarone. Discover the unique qualities between wines made from "fresh" grapes with those made with semi-dried grapes using either the Doppio Fermentzione (Double Fermentation) or Appassimento winemaking techniques.

Talk Dirty to Me: Soil alone does not make great wine. But it is so important that no winemaker underestimates its value. There are physical characteristics about soil at all depths throughout every vineyard in the world, which are key to the quality of the bottled wine. Join winemakers Clay Mauritson, Mauritson Wines, and Jay Somers, J. Christopher Wines, as they dish the scoop on dirt and how different soils in different places can direct a diverse outcome of the same grape. It may not be for the reasons you think!

Postcards from the Kitchen: Embark on a culinary journey with your tour guides: Tory McPhail of Commanders Palace, Stephen Stryjewski of Cochon and Ryan Prewitt of Pche. Live vicariously through their travels as they discuss the influences their journeys have made in their dishes. Ramey Wine Cellars will be joining the chefs to provide the perfect pairings. Bon Voyage!

The Glass Matters! Riedel brings 250 years of glassmaking skill to the finest wine glasses in the world. Skeptical that the glassware does indeed impact the quality of the wine? During this guided journey, taste for yourself how the flavors and aromas of wines are enhanced when a glass shape is designed according to the character of the wine. It is an eye opening and amazing experience! To top it off, you will receive a set of Riedel Vinum XL glasses.

Temper Tantrums: Join award winning pastry chef Rhonda Ruckman from the Link Restaurant Group as this culinary expert takes you on a cavalcade through the history of cooking with chocolate, how it has changed and naming names of the best craft chocolatiers in America. In addition, Chef Rhonda will present demonstrations on everything from properly melting each type of chocolate to cream-to-chocolate ratios to sauces, bon-bons, cake and pie fillings. Libations will be paired with each.

Homegrown: Farm names have become like designer labels appearing on menus citywide. Chefs Michael Gulotta (Mopho), Phillip Lopez (Root/Square Root) and Michael Stoltzfus (Coquette) will join forces with specialty farmers from Two Run, Covey Rise, Pelican Produce and Chappapeela to showcase the highest quality products hitting the hottest restaurants.

Simply Sake: Learn how to drink sake like a pro! This guided tasting will explore sake's many myths and misconceptions, how to taste, important terms to look out for, what to expect from different styles, as well as tips on pairing sake with food. Six sakes will be poured, representing a range of different styles and regions, including Tentaka Kuni "Hawk in Heavens" Junmai, Tochigi; Rihaku "Wandering Poet" Junmai Ginjo, Shimane; Fukucho "Moon on the Water" Junmai Ginjo, Hiroshima; Takatenjin "Soul of the Sensei" Junmai Daiginjo, Shizuoka; Konteki "Tears of Dawn" Daiginjo, Kyoto; and Tozai "Snow Maiden" Junmai Nigori, Kyoto.

The Bounty of Sonoma: Join Chris Benziger on a tasting tour exploring the diversity and splendor of Sonoma County. The Benziger's have been farming grapes biodynamically all over Sonoma County for over 3 decades. You will experience everything from the cool Carneros region for chardonnay to the hot pockets of the Mayacamas bench perfect for those Bordeaux beauties and back to the maritime coolness of West County that grow exquisite pinot noir.

For more than 21 years the New Orleans Wine & Food Experience has showcased the culinary excellence in our community alongside national and international wines while raising more than $1 Millionfor local non-profit organizations.  This year, in an effort to fight hunger and support culinary education, Caf Reconcile will be the beneficiary of 40% of the event proceeds. The remaining 60% will be shared by the Louisiana Restaurant Association Education Foundation's ProStart Program, Delgado Culinary Arts School, New Orleans Center for the Creative Arts' Culinary Program, the John Folse Culinary Institute and the Edible Schoolyard New Orleans. HOW:                   Admission is free. More information: www.hnoc.org or (504) 523-4662

WHY:                    The Historic New Orleans Collection will celebrate Louisiana's role on the silver screen with "From Cameo to Close-up: Louisiana in Film." The free exhibition features posters, lobby cards, photographs, press books and other ephemera from the silent era to the mid-1990s. All of the items, which cover classic films and lesser-known works, are from THNOC's permanent holdings.

Louisiana's climate and picturesque scenery have attracted the attention of filmmakers for nearly a century. Film treatments-particularly adaptations of works by noted writers such as Tennessee Williams, William Faulkner and Anne Rice-have played an important role in shaping national and international perceptions of our region and have helped fuel the rapid growth of the Louisiana tourism economy in the second half of the 20th century.

Thanks largely to tax incentives passed by the state legislature in 2002, the film industry has emerged as a significant economic engine for Louisiana. THNOC to present new exhibition, book from Richard Sexton in April 2014

Projects examine New Orleans's Creole connections to Latin America

February 2014 | New Orleans, LA - New Orleans is known for its distinctive Creole heritage-evident in its food, architecture and people-but it is part of an entire family of Latin Caribbean cities that forged new identities from their colonial histories. The Historic New Orleans Collection will present "Creole World: Photographs of New Orleans and the Latin Caribbean Sphere," a new exhibition and book by renowned author and photographer Richard Sexton exploring these connections.

Over the course of 38 years, Sexton travelled across Latin America-from Haiti, Colombia, Argentina, Cuba and Ecuador back home to New Orleans-capturing the architectural and urban similarities among these culturally rich locales. The exhibition of more than 50 color images will be on view in THNOC's Laura Simon Nelson Galleries for Louisiana Art, 400 Chartres St. The galleries are open to the public Tuesday-Saturday, 9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., and admission is free.

In the accompanying book of the same name, essays by Creole-architecture scholar Jay D. Edwards and photography historian John H. Lawrence set the stage for the more than 200 color images by Sexton. Together, the essays and photographs take readers on a fascinating journey across time and place, through the ever-changing Creole world. Every aspect of "Creole World"-from its lively, unpredictable design to its bursts of color and movement-conveys the excitement of discovery in a land both foreign and familiar.

The lavishly illustrated, hardcover book will retail for $49.95 and will be available for purchase at THNOC, local bookstores and national online retailers beginning April 15. For more information, visit www.hnoc.org or call (504) 523-4662.

UPCOMING EVENTS

Saenger Theatre  "jewel of Canal Street"

Friday, May 30 at 8pm

Tickets on sale Friday, April 11 at 10am

April 7, 2014 (New Orleans, LA) - Those hilarious hidden-camera pranksters from truTV's hit series Impractical Jokers are coming to the Saenger Theatre on May 30 for The truTV Impractical Jokers Tour featuring The Tenderloins. Sponsored by truTV, the show will star Impractical Jokers' Q, Sal, Murr & Joe, the lifelong friends who are also known as the comedy team The Tenderloins.

About truTV's Impractical Jokers

truTV's hit series Impractical Jokers currently airs Thursdays at 10 p.m. (ET/PT). The show centers on Q, Murr, Joe and Sal, four longtime friends who dare one another to do ridiculous things in public, then capture their extreme dares on hidden camera, complete with the unsuspecting public's amused, confused, or flabbergasted reactions. After completing each dare, the guys are given a thumbs-up or a thumbs-down to determine who succeeded under pressure and who collapsed in defeat. At the end of each episode, the guy with the most fails must face a mortifying punishment with truly humiliating consequences.

Impractical Jokers premiered on truTV to critical acclaim in December 2011 and quickly became one of the network's biggest hits, especially among young adults. The show averaged 2.8 million viewers in Q1 2013 and ranked among basic cable's Top 5 programs in the timeslot with key adult and male demos. Impractical Jokers is also one of truTV's youngest-skewing series, scoring a median age of only 32.

Impractical Jokers is now in its third season. The network also greenlit a new post-show, entitled Jokers After Party. Impractical Jokers and Jokers After Party are produced for truTV by NorthSouth Productions (Say Yes to the Dress: Atlanta, Double Divas), with Charlie DeBevoise and Mark Hickman serving as executive producers.

The Saenger Theatre presents

GYPSY KINGS  25th Anniversary Tour

Saturday, August 16 at 8pm

Tickets on sale Friday April 11 at Noon

April 7, 2014 (New Orleans, LA) - It has been twenty-five years since the Gipsy Kings captured the world's imagination with their self-titled debut album-a record that became a genuine phenomenon, certified gold and platinum around the globe, introducing millions of listeners to a unique, irresistible blend of traditional flamenco styles with Western pop and Latin rhythms. In celebration of their 25th Anniversary, the Gypsy Kings will play the Saenger Theatre on Saturday, August 16, 2014.

The band has toured virtually nonstop over the past 25 years, to the farthest-flung corners of the planet, and sold almost twenty million albums, all the while retaining the same line-up of virtuoso musicians.

Now the Gipsy Kings return with SAVOR FLAMENCO, their ninth studio album and first new release in six years. The project marks the first time in their storied career that the Kings have produced themselves and written all of the material. It also starts a relationship between France's most successful musical group of all time and a new label, Knitting Factory Records.

"Music has always been a passion," says lead guitarist Tonino Baliardo. "Even after all this time, after all these years of touring and working. It has given us so much. We have matured, we have developed in music, and it has been so good for us."

Twenty-five years is an eternity in pop music, but the story of the Gipsy Kings reaches back much farther. Theirs is a music that extends through generations, to the sounds of their ancestors, and reflects the eclectic and peripatetic history of the gitanos, Spanish Romani people who fled the Catalonia region during the Spanish Civil War. The group's unchanging roster consists of two bands of brothers-the Reyes (Nicolas, Canut, Paul, Patchai, and Andre) and the Baliardos (Tonino, Paco, and Diego). The fathers of these brothers, Jose Reyes and Manitas de Plata, formed a celebrated flamenco duo which counted the likes of Miles Davis and Pablo Picasso among its fans. When the pair parted ways, Reyes became even more popular after starting his own band, backed up by his sons and called Los Reyes.

When the senior Reyes passed away in 1979, Nicolas and Andre began playing with the Baliardo brothers in the Southern French town of Arles. They traveled throughout the country, busking on the streets of Cannes, playing wherever they could-weddings, parties, festivals. Having adopted the perpetual motion of the gypsy lifestyle, they eventually translated "Los Reyes" and changed their name to the Gipsy Kings.

"World Music" is often a meaningless catch-all phrase, a marketing shortcut, but as one of the acts that first helped define the phrase, the Gipsy Kings create music that really does cross all borders. From the beginning all the way through SAVOR FLAMENCO, their sound has reflected the constant travel and diverse influences of the gypsy heritage. Their 1987 debut album, which spent forty weeks on the US album charts, introduced the world to "Rumba Gitano"-South America's rumba rhythm married to the fleet attack of flamenco guitars. That record's "Bamboleo" became a huge, break-out worldwide hit (more than twenty years later, it even turned up on an episode of the TV series Glee).

Over the years, the music of the Kings incorporated elements of Latin and Cuban styles, Arabic music, reggae, and jazz guitar reminiscent of the French Gypsy master Django Reinhardt. Yet, as heard on the new album, they have never lost their intense connection to the traditional flamenco of their heritage, keeping a spotlight on Tonino Baliardo's fluid guitar work and Nicolas Reyes's powerful vocals.

The band's music has also remained visible over the years throughout popular culture. They recently performed their version of "Volare," which was an international hit in 1989, on an episode of Dancing with the Stars. Their rendition of "Hotel California" was included in the film The Big Lebowski and on the HBO series Entourage. The 2010 film Toy Story 3 featured a Gipsy Kings version of the movie's popular, Randy Newman-penned theme, "You've Got a Friend in Me."

Following the release of their last album, 2006's Pasajero, the Kings looked at the chaos that was dominating the 21st Century music industry and opted to take a break from recording. They never stopped writing new material and developing songs on the road, though; they began recording SAVOR FLAMENCO two years ago, feeling free to write their own arrangements, select the additional musicians they wanted, and produce their own tracks for the first time ever. When it was time to re-enter the marketplace, they also found an innovative new partner in Knitting Factory Records, an independent label which recently oversaw an ambitious campaign to reinvigorate the catalogue of Nigerian musical/political icon Fela.

For the band, the new album represents both a look forward and a look back. Nicolas Reyes says that "Samba Samba," the lead single of SAVOR FLAMENCO, "is a song very much from our early years - it was written for parties, sun, joy, and beaches." Yet Patchai Reyes also points out the new directions taken in this collection. "There are some Brazilian songs on new album, a mix of cultures," he says. "It's beautiful. We are delighted."

Tickets for the Gypsy Kings go on sale Friday, April 11 at Noon. They will be available at the Saenger Theatre Box Office, all Ticketmaster outlets, ticketmaster.com or by calling 800-745-3000.  The box office, located at 1111 Canal St., is open Monday through Friday from 10 am to 5 pm.

Ticket prices: $39.75, $49.75, $59.75, $79.75. All tickets subject to applicable service charges and fees.

WHY:             On the 100th anniversary of the Boswell family's arrival in New Orleans, The Historic New Orleans Collection brings the family back into the spotlight with a new exhibition.

"Shout, Sister, Shout! The Boswell Sisters of New Orleans" looks at the lives, music and legacy of the family that moved from Birmingham, Ala., to Uptown New Orleans in 1914 and became national musical sensations in the 1920s and '30s.

The talented trio consisted of sisters Martha, Connie and Vet Boswell. Their mother, who was fascinated by the rich variety of music in New Orleans, encouraged all of her children to study music. The sisters became classically trained musicians heavily influenced by the city's vibrant jazz scene. Together they pioneered the cheerful, close-harmony vocal style that brought joy to listeners across the nation during the Great Depression and later became emblematic of 1940s girl groups.

Today's music enthusiasts can rediscover the talented trio through the new exhibition from The Historic New Orleans Collection. "Shout, Sister, Shout!" celebrates the Boswell sisters with listening stations, memorabilia, photographs, radio scripts and notes from fans and peers.
