NATIONAL HEMP DAY

On February 4th, National Hemp Day proudly weaves a celebration surrounding an industry with a long and innovative history.

Did you know hemp has been a part of human civilization for thousands of years? The world's earliest civilizations used hemp fibers to make fabric for clothing and other materials. Even America's founding fathers drafted early documents on hemp paper. During the last century, leaders used a "Hemp for Victory" campaign during WWII to encourage farmers to grow hemp for military use. Since then, hemp has been an essential material in the innovation of several industries. For example, shipping, construction, and textiles rely on hemp for numerous products. The construction industry started using hemp in place of concrete (known as hempcrete) since it is windproof and offers a lower carbon footprint.

The Industrial Hemp Pilot Program allowed several states to grow, cultivate, and process hemp for agricultural purposes. These programs brought thousands of new jobs to an industry that had long been considered obsolete because of the Schedule I classification of hemp (the same classification as heroin and LSD).

In 2018, the hemp industry celebrated a massive win with the passage of the Farm Bill. Hemp – including the leaves, stalks, and stems – has since been rescheduled to a Schedule V classification, the same as OTC low-dose codeine. As a result, the growing, producing, and distribution of hemp are legal on a national level. Products made from hemp such as CBD, clothing, plastics, paint, insulation, and biofuels will now be more readily available. The passing of the 2018 Farm Bill brings massive growth potential. Some publications estimate that the hemp industry will become a multi-billion dollar industry for the United States.

Which lake is the largest by volume in the world?

Caspian Sea

Lake Victoria

Lake Superior

Lake Baikal

The freshwater lake with the greatest volume is Lake Baikal in Siberia, Russia, with an estimated volume of 23,615.390 cubic kilometres (5,665.63 cubic miles). Located in a geological rift valley in south-eastern Siberia, Lake Baikal is 636 kilometres (395 miles) long, with an average width of only 48 kilometres(30 miles). Soundings taken from the lake's Central Basin revealed it to be 1,642 metres (5,387 feet) deep, also making it the world's deepest lake.

The lake has an area of 31,722 square kilometres (12,247 square miles).

Baikal's depth and volume are based on the findings of a bottom-relief survey carried out by Navy Hydrographic Survey expeditions in 1979–87, which were compiled into bathymetric maps in 1992. This data was digitized, corrected and updated with material from other surveys in 1999. Funding for the project was provided by INTAS (International Association for the promotion of cooperation with scientists from the New Independent States of the former Soviet Union).

The revised depth and volume of Lake Baikal were published in the report "Computer-based Bathymetric Map of Lake Baikal", which appeared in Doklady Earth Sciences, vol. 408, issue 1, in May 2006. The authors of the report are P P Sherstyankin, S P Alekseev, A M Abramov, K G Stavrov, M De Batist, R His, M Canals and J L Casamor.

UNEASY LIES THE HEAD THAT WEARS THE CROWN, BUT WHICH ONE WILL WEAR IT?

England’s King Henry II and his Queen Elinor of Aquitaine had four sons, the eldest died, leaving the other three to squabble over who came next. Unfortunately, Henry and Elinor disagreed over which one should take the crown next.

That’s the arc of The Lion in Winter, Playmakers Theater’s next production. Directed by Chase Hefte, the production chronicles the royal gathering at Christmas 1183 as the family meets to hash out the succession. It does not go well leaving Elinor to comment, “What family doesn’t have its ups and downs?”

The Lion in Winter crackles with brilliant scenes between the royals as they plot and scheme and form alliances to promote their choice for king.

The production opens Saturday, Jan. 20 and runs through Sunday, February 4. Saturday performances are at 7 p.m. and Sunday matinees are at 2 p.m. Tickets are $20 and available through www.BonTempsTix.com.

With Paul Varisco & The Milestones playing this Sunday at the ‘Rock ’N Bowl’ in New Orleans, it’s the perfect opportunity to venture back in time nearly 60 years ago when radio stations in the greater Metro area were spinning their records.

They released “Hey Girl” and “She’s A Big Girl Now” in 1966 on the ‘Morceau from New Orleans’ label, a product of ’S.A.C. Productions.’

Two years later in 1968, they appeared on New York City-based label ‘KAPP,’ with 45 rpm release of “Tell Me When Love Goes” (co-written by Varisco and Moore” and “Sweet Lorene,” an Otis Redding tune.

In 1969 they released two records on two different label, one on ’S.A.C. Records,’ with “Gotta Have Love,” co-written by Greg Davis and Varisco, and “Look Around You People,” written by Darryl Davis.,

Also in 1969, they released the same two songs on the ‘Cupol-CBS’ subsidiary out of Swenden, ’Date’ label, which they used outside of Sweden.

Paul Varisco & The Milestones have continued to perform in and around New Orleans for decades, including the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival and annual shows at ‘Rock ’N Bowl, including this Sunday’s (Feb. 4) show at 4:30 p.m.

When Varisco wasn’t singing ‘Blue-eyed Soul,’ he was running a retail clothing business for 30-plus years.

Varisco however, accepted an even bigger challenger when his daughter Michel’s husband, New Orleans Saints safety Steve Gleason was diagnosed with ALS.

Varisco in turned, co-founded the ‘Team Gleason Initiative Foundation.’............join us in continuous prayers for Steve Gleason......

What does "surreptitious" mean?

Kept secret

surreptitious /səˌrɛpˈtɪʃəs/

Definition: done, made, or acquired by stealth; secret or unauthorized; clandestine.

Origin: from the Latin word "surreptitius" meaning "stolen, furtive", from "surreptus", past participle of "surripere" meaning "to steal".

Example: The spy took a surreptitious glance over his shoulder to make sure nobody was following him.

"Kept secret" is a fitting description for the word "surreptitious". It refers to actions or behaviors that are done in secret, without the knowledge or approval of others. This can range from small, harmless secrets to larger, more significant ones that have the potential to cause harm. The act of keeping something surreptitious can be intentional, as in the case of a spy or a thief trying to avoid detection, or it can be unintentional, such as when someone is trying to hide their true feelings or intentions. Whatever the reason, surreptitious behavior is often associated with deception and distrust, and can have serious consequences if discovered.

NATIONAL HOMEMADE SOUP DAY

February 4th heats up with National Homemade Soup Day. In every cuisine, soup provides a rich basis of flavor and history.

Before the era of modern transportation, soup was a product of regionally available foods. For this reason, there are thousands of soup recipes available today.

Many soups also offer medicinal properties. What was once considered a wive’s tale, chicken soup now has the backing of the scientific community. Yes, chicken soup helps relieve the symptoms of the common cold. How? Well, scientists believe that a bowl of soup may reduce inflammation of the lungs. It is thought that chicken soup slows down the activity of white blood cells that can cause inflammation.

But that’s not all homemade soup does. Every cook knows the most important ingredient that goes into every pot of simmering soup. They keep the ingredient stored where it will do its best work, too. As they work, they season the soup from their heart giving it just the right amount of love each and every time. Whether they add it with the noodles or the vegetable, the broth or the cream, each cook knows there’s enough to go around. That’s why homemade soup heals the best.

1915: Old Basin Canal Floods

The Old Basin Canal (Carondelet Canal) overflowed during a period of very high water, spilling onto Orleans Avenue between North Claiborne Avenue and North Robertson Street. The high water was caused by a hurricane that struck the city in early September 1915 that did widespread damage throughout the city. As might be expected, a group of neighborhood boys are enjoying the water and the day off of school.

This photograph is attributed to Alexander Alison and may be related to his work with the Sewerage & Water Board, the source of many of his best images. In the right background appears to be the remnants of an old moontower, converted into a bell tower that stood on Carondelet Walk along the Old Basin Canal.

The Old Basin Canal was filled in beginning in the 1920s and the Lafitte Greenway now runs along the former course of the canal.

1902: Men Fishing

In searching for additional photographs by Anna Martindale at the suggestion of Charlie Ipcar, I came across this one of a group of men fishing along the wharves in New Orleans in 1902. The location appears to be farther downriver in the Third District.

1910: The Terrebonne and the St. James

A recent question from a member prompted me to cover this photograph of a pair of vessels from 1910 to consider. Prominently in the right foreground is the St. James while in the left background we have the Terrebonne.

As far as we can tell there have been at least three different vessels named St. James. However, this particular iteration was built in 1898 in Cincinnati for the Merchants & Planters Packet Company who ran tri-weekly between New Orleans and Baton Rouge. She measured 185-feet by 35-feet with a 6-1/2-foot draft. In 1901 she was acquired by the Mississippi Packet Company and Captain J.B. Woods who ran semi-weekly between New Orleans and Bayou Sara. The St. James was sold again in 1914 to John F. Klein who took the boat north, offering excursions around St. Louis for her first year, then moved to Pittsburgh. In 1916 she departed from Pittsburgh bound for Mardi Gras in New Orleans. Klein planned to sell the St. James to Captain H.M. Lindsay of Mobile but she burned shortly after reaching New Orleans.

The sternwheeler Terrebonne was built in Madisonville, Louisiana, in 1908 for the Bradford Transportation Company. The packet boat measured 132-feet by 21-feet with a 2.5-foot draft. She ran from New Orleans to Bayou Teche as well as between New Orleans and Baton Rouge. She sank with a 1,800 sacks of rice near Donaldsonville on August 25, 1926, as a result of an unnamed hurricane that struck the Louisiana coast near Morgan City with 100 mph winds.

Although difficult to see, the pair of chimneys behind the Terrebonne belong to the Mabel Comeaux which we will save for another time.

Comedy House New Orleans

The most unique comedy show in New Orleans is The Open Mic From Hell, hosted by Chris Trew (as seen on MTV, Comedy Central, America's Got Talent)

CHNO ( Comedy house New Orleans)

609-610 Fulton St

New Orleans, LA 70130

Mon, Feb 5

8:00 pm - 10:00 pm

(Entry at 7:30 pm)

The Open Mic From Hell is the most unique night of comedy in New Orleans.

Everything about the show is chaotic and unpredictable in the most beautifully hilarious way.

The list of performers? A total mystery.

The jokes they’ll tell? Nobody knows, not even them.

How does it work? Comedians sign-up on the list an hour before showtime. At least 13 names get pulled out of the bucket.

When a name gets pulled they come on stage and make a choice - do they do an entirely new set based on words from the audience, or a special challenge set.

Past challenges have had comics doing their set outside on the street, with noise canceling headphones on, and with a designated heckler in the crowd. We are always adding new, improved, and ridiculous challenges to the show.

6-7pm Intro to Swing

For total beginners to swing dancing or dancing of any kind. Also for those looking to refresh their basics and learn some ragtime dances. We use these pre-swing era dances to teach beginners how to step on rhythm, step on rhythm while connected to another person, how to connect in order to lead or follow, you'll learn to syncopate your footwork, and then we'll slowly start to let go of one hand and create the beginnings of what will eventually be a bad-ass swing out.

7:30-8:30 Lindy Hop Vocab - Intermediate Level

This class is gonna give you some must know moves, some technique, some philosophy, and of course, we'll continue to clarify and polish up your swing outs.

Christien Bold

Christien Bold, a rising young vocalist and New Orleans native, aims to share with his audience, young and old, the rich musical tradition of New Orleans that he has been so fortunate to be a part of in recent years. A tradition that fused with his own inner groove.

Christien has performed with the Ellis Marsalis Trio, the Wess "Warmdaddy" Anderson Quintet, and Jesse McBride & Next Generation. Under the tutelage of these great mentors, he has grown to understand the power of music as a tool for open and honest expression. Today, as he branches out on his own, presenting some of his new music, he sends messages of personal change, peace, self-love, and the importance of mental health in modern day America.

Chiefs vs. Niners

The defending champion Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers will face off in Super Bowl LVIII after both teams won their respective conference championship games yesterday.

The Chiefs will be making their fourth trip to the title game in five years after beating the Baltimore Ravens on the road, 17-10. Tight end Travis Kelce caught all 11 passes thrown his way, including a touchdown, en route to breaking Hall-of-Famer Jerry Rice's record for all-time playoff receptions (151). The game turned on a pair of endzone turnovers by the Ravens in the fourth quarter.

San Francisco topped the Detroit Lions 34-31 at home, holding the Lions to seven points in the second half and overcoming a 24-7 halftime deficit to reach their first championship since 2019. Star running back Christian McCaffrey ran for 90 yards (4.5 yards per carry) and two touchdowns.

Super Bowl LVII takes place Sunday, Feb. 11 (6:30 pm ET, CBS), in Las Vegas, with R&B star Usher headlining the halftime show.

For instance, almost every month’s Full Moon boasts a name sourced from Native American, Colonial American, or other North American traditions, with their titles mirroring seasonal shifts and nature’s events.

Wolf Moon (January): Inspired by the cries of hungry wolves.

Snow Moon (February): A nod to the month’s often heavy snowfall.

Worm Moon (March): Named after the earthworms that signal thawing grounds.

Pink Moon (April): In honor of the blossoming pink wildflowers.

Related: How to see the eclipse in April

Flower Moon (May): Celebrating the bloom of flowers.

Strawberry Moon (June): Marks the prime strawberry harvest season.

Buck Moon (July): Recognizing the new antlers on bucks.

Sturgeon Moon (August): Named after the abundant sturgeon fish.

Corn Moon (September): Signifying the corn harvesting period.

Hunter’s Moon (October): Commemorating the hunting season preceding winter.

Beaver Moon (November): Reflects the time when beavers are busy building their winter dams.

Cold Moon (December): Evocative of winter’s chill.

In addition, there are a few additional names for Full Moons that commonly make their way into public conversations and news.

Super Moon: This term is reserved for a Full Moon that aligns with the lunar perigee, which is the Moon’s nearest point to Earth in its orbit. This proximity renders the Full Moon unusually large and luminous. For a Full Moon to earn the Super Moon tag, it should be within approximately 90 percent of its closest distance to Earth.

Blue Moon: A Blue Moon is the second Full Moon in a month that experiences two Full Moons. This phenomenon graces our skies roughly every 2.7 years. Though the term suggests a color, Blue Moons aren’t truly blue. Very occasionally, atmospheric conditions such as recent volcanic eruptions might lend the Moon a slightly blueish tint, but this hue isn’t tied to the term.

Harvest Moon: Occurring closest to the autumnal equinox, typically in September, the Harvest Moon is often renowned for a distinct orange tint it might display. This Full Moon rises close to sunset and sets near sunrise, providing extended hours of bright moonlight. Historically, this was invaluable to farmers gathering their produce.

When Rex Met Zulu Explains Real Life Stories

That Could Happen Only in New Orleans

METAIRIE – Errol Laborde, author of a new book of his columns titled When Rex Met Zulu, will discuss it at 7  p.m., Monday, March 4, at the East Bank Regional Library, 4747 W. Napoleon, Metairie.

LSU Athletics is proud to announce its year-long celebration of 100 Years in Tiger Stadium, highlighted by stadium upgrades, events, storytelling initiatives, and a season-long celebration throughout the 2024 campaign.

Tiger Stadium, one of America’s most iconic sporting venues, first opened its gates on Thanksgiving Day, November 27, 1924. Since then, the Tigers have won 450 contests in Death Valley, which has been home to two Heisman Trophy winners, four national championship teams, and 12 SEC title-winning squads.

Included in the celebration are several upgrades to Tiger Stadium, including a new videoboard and lighting system, as well as other upgrades designed to enhance the game day experience. Other events and celebrations will be announced throughout the year.

The 2024 home schedule features several marquee matchups, including home contests against Oklahoma, UCLA, and Alabama. Information on the full 2024 schedule and season tickets will be announced in the coming weeks.

One of the most legendary stadiums in all of college football, Tiger Stadium has been called “the best place in the world to watch a sporting event” by ESPN and “the pound-for-pound king of noise in college football.”

Entering its centennial season in 2024, Tiger Stadium has been a cornerstone of LSU Athletics and the Louisiana community for almost a century, hosting numerous NFL superstars, Heisman Trophy winners, and Hall of Famers since its opening in 1924. It serves as a sporting, cultural, and commercial hub for LSU Athletics, which contributes an estimated $500 million of economic activity for the state of Louisiana annually.
