NATIONAL DRESS UP YOUR PET DAY

National Dress Up Your Pet Day on January 14th provides a special day to celebrate with your pet and show off their fashion style. Pets do become part of one's family. Whether you take a visit to the groomer or take it a step further and dress up in matching outfits, be sure your pet companion is safe and comfortable.

Please remember to keep your pets safe and comfortable in the pet clothing and costumes that you choose.
Tips for dressing up your pet:
  • If your pet just doesn't like dressing up, let them sit this holiday out.
  • Be sure it fits. Restricting movement or ability to breathe can cause injury or illness.
  • Many pets like to chew. Avoid loose or dangling pieces which can cause choking hazards.

New Orleans

Sunday: It'll be sunny and pleasant, with a high near 61 degrees and a nighttime low of around 44 degrees. Showers are possible after midnight.

Monday: Showers could continue Monday, when daytime temperatures should max out in the low 50s. That night will be cold, with forecasters warning of nighttime temperatures as low as 28 degrees and blustery winds of up to 20 mph.

Author: Alexa Trischler / Meteorologist

NEW ORLEANS — This weekend is cool and beautiful before a big Arctic chill sweeps into south Louisiana early in the work week. Sunday will be warmer and mostly sunny. Clouds will increase at night.

The blast of Arctic air will charge in Monday. A few showers will be around mainly in the afternoon to evening. While a few sleet pellets could mix in north of the lake Monday night, this doesn't look like a big frozen precipitation event. No accumulation is expected but if you are driving on the Northshore use extra caution on bridges and overpasses just in case.

We will mainly just feel the frigid air blowing in Monday night to Tuesday and then delivering a hard freeze Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. Overnight lows could brush upper teens north of the lake and middle 20 south. Protect exposed outdoor pipes as well as plants, pets and people. We'll warm up Thursday with another front on Friday.

There is still plenty of time to protect from the deep freeze. Freezing temperatures won't arrive for the Northshore until Tuesday morning and for both north and south until Wednesday morning.

Detailed Forecast

SUNDAY:

Partly cloudy and pleasant. Low: S 40, N 35. High: 62. Wind N/E 5-10 mph.

MLK DAY:

40% chance of scattered rain showers. Warmer and breezy, then much colder late. Low: S 45, N 38. High: 61.

TUESDAY:

Morning light to moderate freeze north of the lake. Mostly cloudy, very cold and breezy. Low: S 34, N 31. High: 39.

WEDNESDAY:

Morning hard freeze north and south of the lake. Mostly sunny and very cold. Low: S 25, N 19. High: 42.

THURSDAY:

Morning hard freeze north of the lake, frost possible south of the lake. Partly cloudy and cool. Low: S 34, N 27. High: 60.

FRIDAY:

30% chance of scattered showers. Mostly cloudy and breezy. Low: S 50, N 48. High: 59.

SATURDAY:

Morning light freeze north of the lake, frost possible south of the lake. Sunny and chilly. Low: S 36, N 32. High: 49.

LCMC moves patients, doctors from Tulane Medical Center to East Jefferson General Hospital

Downtown hospital now closed but some services will remain.

By STEPHANIE RIEGEL

A year after purchasing the Tulane Medical Center, LCMC Health has completed its move of 500 Tulane doctors and medical residents, dozens of patients and the majority of the hospital’s services to East Jefferson General Hospital.

The move out of downtown New Orleans, which has been underway since the fall of 2023, was completed Saturday, according to LCMC Health President and CEO Greg Feirn. It involved transferring most of the hospital’s labs, pharmacy, medical equipment and nearly 50 patients who were being treated downtown to the Metairie hospital, which is also part of the nine hospital LCMC health system.

The move also required shifting a handful of specialty services from Tulane Medical Center to the nearby University Medical Center, which is also operated by LCMC.

LCMC will continue to operate the Tulane Medical Center emergency room, though patients requiring surgery, cardiac procedures or an inpatient hospital stay will be diverted by EMS to East Jeff or UMC, depending on the seriousness of their condition.

Some clinical programs will also remain downtown, though others will shift to Metairie. LCMC officials said patients have been made aware for several months of the change.

The move marks a milestone for the partnership between Tulane and LCMC, which was first announced in the fall of 2022 and is a key piece of Tulane’s strategy to expand its downtown campus. The university is investing nearly $1 billion downtown over the next decade, including renovating the 31-story Tulane Medical Center building to accommodate a new nursing program, lab space and offices.

Mike Fitts.

“We do about $220 million worth of research a year, which is outside funding and we have totally run out of space,” Tulane President Mike Fitts said. “We’re exploding and we expect to see that continue and downtown for us is the locus of this activity.”

For LCMC, now one of just two hospital systems in the New Orleans market, the move is an opportunity to turn East Jeff into a teaching hospital, which brings with it new doctors and residents, new treatment protocols and an influx of patients to fill its beds, which are currently just 50% occupied.

“This is about workforce development, retention, keeping our patients in Louisiana and growing the economy and that is exciting,” said Feirn.

Busy year

LCMC purchased the 235-bed Tulane Medical and two other Tulane-run hospitals — Tulane Lakeside Hospital in Metairie and Lakeview Regional Hospital in Mandeville — from HCA Healthcare in January 2023.

It the months that followed, it successfully fended off a legal challenge from the Federal Trade Commission over the $150 million hospital purchase. Under the Biden Administration, the FTC has frowned upon large hospital mergers, arguing they raise antitrust concerns by reducing competition and driving up costs.

LCMC successfully argued that the state, not the federal government, regulates hospital competitiveness issues and that then-Attorney General Jeff Landry had determined the deal would not adversely affect cost or quality of care.

LCMC’s purchase of the HCA hospitals leaves New Orleans with two large health systems, LCMC and Ochsner Health.

Organ demonstrations

Wednesday–Sunday, 11 a.m.

Barbara S. Beckman Music Room, 520 Royal Street

Free admission and no RSVP required

Join THNOC staff for a short program exploring the history of the beautifully restored Aeolian residential player pipe organ. Listen to a musical demonstration and discover the significance of this rare and technologically advanced musical instrument.

In the early 20th century, having a player organ in the home was a luxury reserved for the most opulent residences, allowing the owner to have access to recorded music before radios and phonographs were commonplace. Tobacco magnate William Ratcliffe Irby remodeled the property at 520 Royal Street—now part of THNOC’s exhibition center—to serve as his personal residence starting in 1918. In the process he installed a player organ in the entry room to his lavish third-floor apartment. The instrument, built by the Aeolian Company of New York, is one of a handful that has survived to this day in its original location and in working condition, after a meticulous restoration by the Holtkamp Organ Company.

What does "migraine" mean?

Severe headache

migraine Pronunciation: maɪˈɡreɪn

Definition: a severe recurring headache, often accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light and sound.

Origin: The word "migraine" originated from the late Middle English term "migreyn" which came from the Old French word "migraine" meaning "severe headache." It can be traced back to the Latin word "hemicrania" which translates to "pain affecting one side of the head."

Example: The throbbing pain in her temples and the visual disturbances were clear signs that she was experiencing a debilitating migraine.

A migraine is a specific type of severe headache that is often characterized by intense pain on one side of the head. It is usually accompanied by other symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light and sound. Migraines can last for hours or even days, significantly impacting a person's daily life. They can be triggered by various factors including stress, hormonal changes, certain foods, or environmental factors. Understanding the symptoms and triggers of migraines is essential for effective management and seeking appropriate medical treatment.

Jordan Hawkins' career-best night helps short-handed Pelicans earn gutsy win against Mavs

BY CHRISTIAN CLARK

DALLAS — When Jordan Hawkins finally got to sleep Saturday, it was nearly 5 a.m.

The Pelicans tipped off Friday against the Denver Nuggets a little after 8 p.m. By the time they played the game, took a 40-minute bus ride to the airport, waited for their plane to get de-iced and arrived in Dallas, they had roughly 15 hours until their next game began.

“We’re hoopers,” Hawkins said. “It doesn’t matter what time we get in.”

The adjustment to NBA life has not fazed Hawkins, a 21-year-old rookie the New Orleans Pelicans drafted with the 14th pick in June.

In Saturday’s 118-108 win over the Dallas Mavericks, Hawkins scored a career-high 34 points. His hot shooting allowed the Pelicans (24-16) to win on a night when four of their five leading scorers — Brandon Ingram, Zion Williamson, CJ McCollum and Trey Murphy — did not play.

NATIONAL HOT PASTRAMI SANDWICH DAY

Pastrami lovers across the country look forward to their favorite sandwich on January 14th as they recognize National Hot Pastrami Sandwich Day.

Popular delicatessen meat, pastrami is usually made from beef. Others make their pastrami sandwich with pork, mutton, or turkey. Before refrigeration, butchers originally created pastrami as a way to preserve meat. To make pastrami, they placed the raw meat in brine. Then they partially dried it and seasoned it with various herbs and spices to be smoked and steamed.

A wave of Romanian Jewish immigration introduced pastrami (pronounced pastróme), a Romanian specialty, in the second half of the 19th century. Early English references used the spelling “pastrama” before the modified “pastrami” spelling was used.

New York kosher butcher, Sussman Volk earns credit for producing the first pastrami sandwich in 1887. He claimed to have gotten the recipe from a Romanian friend in exchange for storing his luggage. Due to the popularity of his sandwich, Volk converted his butcher shop into a restaurant to sell pastrami sandwiches.

Classic Pastrami

  • When served, the deli typically slices the pastrami and places it between two slices of rye bread. Sometimes, the classic New York deli sandwich (pastrami on rye) is served with coleslaw and Russian dressing.
  • When pastrami and coleslaw combine, it's called a Rachel sandwich. Similar to a Reuben which is made with corned beef and sauerkraut.
  • In Los Angeles, they serve the classic pastrami sandwich with hot pastrami right out of the steamer. They slice it very thin and wet from the brine then layered on double-baked Jewish-style rye bread. It is traditionally accompanied by yellow mustard and pickles.
  • In Salt Lake City, in the early 1960s, Greek immigrants introduced a hamburger topped with pastrami and a special sauce. This pastrami burger remains a staple of local burger chains in Utah.

What is the modern equivalent of the word “wittol”?

Cuckold

The modern equivalent of the word “wittol” is cuckold. A cuckold is someone who is in a committed relationship with someone who is unfaithful. The cuckold’s partner is often said to engage in sexual activities with someone else, typically outside of the relationship. This can be done without the cuckold’s knowledge or consent. This type of relationship is often referred to as “cuckoldry” and is a form of emotional and psychological abuse. By staying in the relationship, the cuckold is said to be a “wittol”, or a person who accepts such treatment. Cuckolds can feel a range of emotions, including humiliation, anger, and resentment, and must seek help if they want to end the cycle of abuse.

City of New Orleans Encourages Residents to Participate in the Annual Christmas Tree Recycling Program to Rebuild Wetlands

NEW ORLEANS — The City of New Orleans today reminded residents of the annual Christmas Tree Recycling Program to restore our wetlands. For over 25 years, this program has contributed to the restoration of the Bayou Sauvage Urban National Wildlife Refuge, while preventing them from being placed in landfills. The trees also create an important habitat for birds, fish, crabs, crawfish and shrimp.

"Every year, our Christmas trees bring light and happiness into our homes, but their significance goes far beyond spreading holiday joy," said Mayor LaToya Cantrell. "Recycling and placing these trees along our eroding coastline to help rebuild our wetlands will assist in the effort to protect our great city and state for generations to come. This robust tree recycling program is another example of how New Orleans will continue to lead in combatting the global climate crisis while promoting innovative opportunities to create a better, greener and more vibrant community. So far, recycled trees have restored an area of marsh equal to approximately 200 football fields. Thank you to our residents who continue to donate their Christmas trees year after year to enhance our coastline restoration efforts."

The program is coordinated by the City's Office of Resilience and Sustainability (ORS) and Department of Sanitation, in partnership with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and the Louisiana National Guard.

“We’re bringing attention to the Christmas Tree Recycling Program today because Black Friday and Small Business Saturday are popular days for New Orleanians to buy and decorate live Christmas trees,” said Director of Economic Development Jeff Schwartz. “The City can only accept trees without tinsel and flocking, and we ask residents to please consider this while decorating your tree.”

“While we are making great progress, protecting our natural resources remains more important than ever for New Orleans,” said ORS Deputy Chief Resilience Officer Greg Nichols. "The Christmas Tree Recycling Program is a great way for residents to get involved in the fight to restore our coast.”

Residents are encouraged to place their trees curbside for collection by Department of Sanitation contractors from Jan. 8 - 12, 2024. Trees cannot be flocked, and all ornamentation must be removed before placing them on the curb.  Once they are collected, they will be sorted, bundled and airlifted by helicopter and dropped in targeted sections of the Bayou Sauvage Urban National Wildlife Refuge. The City’s goal is to collect 10,000 trees this year.

“The annual Christmas Tree Drop represents a long-standing partnership between the Louisiana National Guard and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service," said Louisiana National Guard, Chief Warrant Officer 3 Gabriel Ruiz. "It benefits the City of New Orleans and surrounding coastal environment, while also providing valuable training hours for our pilots and crewmembers of the 1st Assault Helicopter Battalion, 244th Aviation Regiment."

“I’d like to thank the residents of New Orleans for sharing their Christmas trees with us each year and making their contribution to coastal restoration," said USFWS Refuge Manager Shelley Stiaes. "Their tradition of donating Christmas trees is helping to rebuild our coastline and build habitat for wildlife."

Pop-Up Trailer Opens

Our king cake trailer on Metairie Road opens! They will be located in the parking lot of The Ridgeway at 2431 Metairie Rd.

They'll be open 7 days a week until Lundi Gras (Feb. 12, 24). If they sell out, they will close early.

NEW ORLEANS  King Cake Drive-Thru will offer a curated selection of Greater New Orleans’ king cakes at your convenience throughout the Mardi Gras season. It will be located at Duckworth Tires’ parking lot, 1009 Metairie Rd., Metairie, Louisiana, 70005.

Chicago-born transplant to New Orleans, Mike Graves, owner of bof bars, a local novelty ice cream company, came up with this idea with his fiancée.

“If New Orleans can do drive-thru daiquiris, it surely can do a King Cake Drive-Thru,” says Graves.

As the 2024 Carnival season drew closer, plans began to form over the holidays, and King Cake Drive-Thru was born. Metairie was chosen specifically to hopefully provide a willing neighborhood accessibility to many different bakeries across the Greater New Orleans area.

A community driven business, King Cake Drive-Thru is not just for the well-known bakery names but also a platform for businesses without their own store-front, as well as up-and-coming bakers.

Expect king cakes from local favorites such as Gambino’s, Brennan’s, Gracious Bakery and Bittersweet Confections. Other lesser known but equally delicious king cakes include Clesi’s Crawfish King Cakes, Empanola’s Guava Cream Cheese King Cakes, Kimi Bakes King Cake Cream Puffs, Vietnamese Doughnguyener’s King Cakes and so much more for the weekly rotating menu.

Other convenience items will be offered such as a party pack complete with plates, napkins, utensils and a king cake knife for on-the-go use.

Graves emphasizes, “Keep your kids in the car. Don’t worry about parking. Pull up and head out. You can grab a favorite or snag a new king cake on the way to the office or on the way home for the family.”

Plans for another King Cake Drive-Thru pop-up location in Houston, Texas is in the works for later in the Mardi Gras season.

Dates/Times:

King Cake Drive-Thru will begin operations on King’s Day, Jan. 6, at 7 a.m. (1009 Metairie Road, Metairie, Louisiana, 70005).

Hours of operation are Friday thru Sunday from 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. (or until sold out) throughout the Mardi Gras season.

To keep up with the weekly rotating menu, follow King Cake Drive-Thru via @kingcakedrivethru (Instagram), @kingcakedrivethru (Tiktok), and ‘King Cake Drive-Thru’ (Facebook).

Acquistapace’s Queen Cake Marries Two Louisiana Delicacies in One Amazing Cake

POSTED BY: KATY

South Louisiana is known for a wide variety of delicious food: muffalettas, boiled crawfish, grilled oysters, po boys of all varieties, and more. This time of year, however, we are generally focused on just one of our favorites: king cake! (we will soon flip over to crawfish). Long-time, family-owned grocery store, Acquistapace’s in Covington has taken our king cake obsession, swirled it with another south Louisiana favored food and come up with one delicious result: The Queen Cake.

Queen Cake is similar to a berry chantilly cake. It has strawberries and mascarpone cream cheese sandwiched between layers of cake and then it’s topped with even more berries, more mascarpone and whipped cream. In stead of vanilla cake, however, this one features king cake! There are hints of cinnamon throughout the cake and granulated sugar is sprinkled on top.

It’s not surprising this treat is found at Acquistapace’s deep in the heart of Covington. Acquistapace’s has been part of the Covington community since 1963 and they know what their audience likes! They are probably best known for their beer, wine, and spirits selection, but they have a few other tricks up their sleeve–like this cake! Personally I love their meat prices and am sure to pick something up whenever I’m in the neighborhood. As a family-owned grocery store with deep roots in the community, they know what their customers like! This time of year you can find their store full of their king cakes but also full of king cakes from all over the area including a number of bakery cakes produced on the south shore like Caluda’s and Haydel’s.

So go ahead and do yourself a favor before the season is over–run over to Acquistapaces and pick up a Queen’s Cake. That little taste of strawberry will have you ready for spring!

Do you love king cake? We have a guide to all the king cake on the Northshore right here.

WYES New Orleans

NEW DOCUMENTARY! Producer and narrator Dennis Woltering profiles six Louisiana visionaries in the new WYES documentary LOUISIANA INVENTORS AND INNOVATORS premiering on Wed., Jan. 17 at 9pm.

Featured in the film are: Alden “Doc” Laborde, who built a revolutionary rig that led to modern, international offshore drilling; Jerome Goldman, who created designs that led to faster, safer worldwide shipping; and Ruth Fertel, who forged a global fine dining enterprise by focusing on excellence and the sizzle.

Also profiled are David Oreck, who used charm and humor to build a household name in vacuum cleaners; J.M. Lapeyre, inventor of machines that revolutionized the shrimp industry and other fields; and Louisiana native Madam C.J. Walker, who overcame poverty and Jim Crow era discrimination to become America’s first self-made female millionaire.

LSU Athletics is proud to announce its year-long celebration of 100 Years in Tiger Stadium, highlighted by stadium upgrades, events, storytelling initiatives, and a season-long celebration throughout the 2024 campaign.

Tiger Stadium, one of America’s most iconic sporting venues, first opened its gates on Thanksgiving Day, November 27, 1924. Since then, the Tigers have won 450 contests in Death Valley, which has been home to two Heisman Trophy winners, four national championship teams, and 12 SEC title-winning squads.

Included in the celebration are several upgrades to Tiger Stadium, including a new videoboard and lighting system, as well as other upgrades designed to enhance the game day experience. Other events and celebrations will be announced throughout the year.

The 2024 home schedule features several marquee matchups, including home contests against Oklahoma, UCLA, and Alabama. Information on the full 2024 schedule and season tickets will be announced in the coming weeks.

One of the most legendary stadiums in all of college football, Tiger Stadium has been called “the best place in the world to watch a sporting event” by ESPN and “the pound-for-pound king of noise in college football.”

Entering its centennial season in 2024, Tiger Stadium has been a cornerstone of LSU Athletics and the Louisiana community for almost a century, hosting numerous NFL superstars, Heisman Trophy winners, and Hall of Famers since its opening in 1924. It serves as a sporting, cultural, and commercial hub for LSU Athletics, which contributes an estimated $500 million of economic activity for the state of Louisiana annually.
