The Krewe de Jeanne d’Arc is pleased to announce the 2022 Honorary Characters!
The Krewe de Jeanne d’Arc held a coronation reception and ceremony at the Historic New Orleans Collection courtyard in the French Quarter. The krewe, which will parade for the fourteenth time on January 6, 2022 celebrating St. Joan’s 610th birthday, selects the honorary characters in the parade in recognition of their service to the community and their embodiment of the mission of the krewe.
King Charles XII will be portrayed by Joseph Andre Mistrot, III. Mr. Mistrot is the current president of L’Union Francaise, the oldest Franco-American nonprofit organization in Louisiana celebrating its 150 anniversary in 2022. Of both French and Cajun heritage, he is passionate about preserving French language and Francophone cultures. He is also the executive assistant to the dean of the School of Liberal Arts at Tulane. The krewe honors Mr. Mistrot for his ongoing role in celebrating our French heritage.
Queen Yolande will be portrayed by Ti Adelaide Martin, co-owner of Commander’s Palace. Ms. Martin is also the founder of the New Orleans Proud to Call it Home campaign, co-founder and chair of New Orleans Culinary and Hospitality Institute, and a driving force behind the new airport terminal in her role as finance chair. Ms. Martin is an inspiring mentor to young women and embodies the spirit of Queen Yolande in her support of the community.
The Maid of Orleans will be portrayed by Ava R. Wilkes, a freshman at Washington and Lee University and resident of New Orleans. She is the daughter of Andrea and Ren Wilkes and attended École Biligue, Audubon Charter School, and Benjamin Franklin High School. Ms. Wilkes won the contest held to select the young woman who best represents the qualities of Joan. She was a member of the Mayor’s Youth Advisory Board and continues to be a voice for her community. In her acceptance speech, given in French and English, Ms. Wilkes said, “Joan of Arc inspires us by remaining true to herself despite all odds. Through the weapon of her faith, Joan of Arc was able to change the course of history. Joan knew how to set an example for her community, and instill values and ideas that, while unorthodox, shaped the world around her for the better.”
The court was welcomed by krewe founder, Amy Kirk Duvoisin, and Co-Captains Antoinette de Alteriis and Amanda Helm.
Watch our website and Facebook page for more details on how you can join us as we celebrate St. Joan and her influence on the city of New Orleans and the world!

Our Mission: The purpose of the Joan of Arc Project aka Krewe de Jeanne d’Arc is to honor and celebrate Joan of Arc’s life in unique, artistic, and educational ways, including the production of the annual Joan of Arc parade and Salon de Jeanne d’Arc. We seek to keep Joan’s story and spirit alive by hosting events, workshops, and presentations that illuminate Joan’s heroism and timelessness, while connecting her to the French heritage and pride of New Orleans. As the “Maid of Orleans” inspires citizens of New Orleans and people around the world, we welcome people of all faiths and backgrounds to join in our joyous, New Orleans-style revelry.

Caroling in Jackson Square Returns to the French Quarter December 19 A New Orleans Holiday Tradition since 1946, preceded by a Holiday Home Tour Patio Planters of the Vieux Carre is pleased to bring the beloved Caroling in Jackson Square back to its rightful place on Sunday, December 19, from 7-8 pm, after being displaced in 2020 due to the pandemic. The free community sing-along gathers thousands of visitors and locals alike together for a festive hour of holiday merriment, with carols led by Mayor LaToya Cantrell, Archbishop Gregory Aymond, Archbishop Alfred Hughes, St. Louis Cathedral Rector Philip Landry and Dean David Allard duPlantier of Christ Church Cathedral, along with other special guests. Gates open at 6:30 pm with Patio Planters volunteers stationed there to distribute complimentary song books and candles to participants in the non-denominational community celebration. This year, Good King Wenceslas will be brought back to the list of carols, along with a new addition, Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas. Organizers feel the lyrics of this song are especially appropriate at a time when ‘faithful friends who are dear to us gather near to us once more’. Mark Romig, senior vice-president and chief marketing officer for New Orleans and Company, will return as master of ceremonies, along with local favorites Harry Mayronne, Chris Wecklein and Amy Alvarez leading carols. Patio Planters President Joey DiFatta cites 2021 Caroling in Jackson Square as a momentous occasion. “Our nonprofit organization has sponsored the event as our gift to the community since 1946 without interruption, even though the pandemic necessitated that we move to a smaller venue in a modified fashion last year,” said DiFatta. “But now we are back where we belong and with an outpouring of support that makes us financially stable . Prior to the annual Caroling in Jackson Square, Patio Planters offers a French Quarter Holiday Home Tour featuring five private residences with varying architectural styles and home furnishings, festively decorated for the season. The self-guided walking tour takes place from 1- 4 pm, allowing plenty of time to enjoy Reveillon dining or Holiday cocktails prior to Caroling. Tickets to the tour, which supports the annual Caroling in Jackson Square, are $20 each if preordered online at www.patioplanters.net and $25 the day of the event. Children 12 and under are free. A limited number of tickets will be available for purchase from 12noon-2:30 pm the day of at Creole Delicacies, 533 St. Ann Street at Jackson Square. This annual event often sells out in advance. Advance online ticket purchases are your best (and only) way to guarantee a ticket.

Now that many of us -- omicron pending -- are feeling comfortable eating inside restaurants again, December is the perfect time for a Réveillon dinner. (And if you’re not comfortable eating inside restaurants just yet, this article has options for you, too!)
Réveillon was born out of the feast and fast, fast and feast cycle that informs so many New Orleans traditions. Translated it means “awakening or arousal,” the meal that was served after midnight mass on Christmas Eve into the early hours of Christmas morning. It was a meal preceded by 24 hours of fasting, which at the time was a requirement to receive communion.
In modern times, it’s a feast of at least four-courses, with many upscale restaurants offering a special menu during the Christmas season. We’ve listed at least 20 here, along with the prices, menu items and whether they have indoor and outdoor seating.
|
|
A New Orleans Creole dining experience that dates back to the mid-1800s. The Creoles celebrated the start of Christmas with a big family meal when they returned home from midnight mass. Today the best restaurants in town serve up decadent four-course holiday meals in the spirit of this classic tradition.

NATIONAL HARD CANDY DAY
A favorite of young and old alike, National Hard Candy Day on December 19th, recognizes the sweet tooth in all of us.
Most hard candies are 100% sugar with flavoring and colors added. To achieve a hard candy, confectioners boil a sugar syrup to 320 degrees Fahrenheit. Once the temperature is reached, the hot, pliable sugar is poured into molds or rolled and folded into shapes and left to cool. Once cool, solid sugar becomes hardened and brittle.
The first hard candies, such as lemon drops and peppermints, were likely prescribed as a remedy for stomach ailments.
Hard candy became popular in the seventeenth century as sugar prices fell. Previously, hard candy was something that only the well-to-do could afford. By the mid-1800s, over 400 companies were manufacturing this popular treat.
In 2015, Jolly Rancher surpassed Werther’s Original as the best-selling hard candy. Other popular hard candies include Dum Dum Pops, Life Savers, Tootsie Roll Pops, and Charms Blow Pop.

NATIONAL OATMEAL MUFFIN DAY
Enjoy a delicious breakfast or snack on National Oatmeal Muffin Day. It’s an excellent way to celebrate on December 19th annually.
Known for its health benefits, millions of people start each day with an oatmeal muffin. Oatmeal includes health benefits for our hearts. Finding ways to incorporate it into our diets increases the opportunities to reap those benefits. Oatmeal muffins are another way to enjoy oatmeal.
The American muffin is similar in size and shape to a cupcake. Recipes for oatmeal muffins began to appear in American cookbooks in the mid-1800s. Raisins, bananas, blueberries and other healthy fruits often compliment oatmeal muffins. Add nuts for even more health benefits and texture, too.

Before the construction of the Huey P. Long Bridge across the Mississippi River in 1935, there were only a couple of options to travel from the East Bank to the West Bank -- steam ferries (fare $0.05) and skiff ferries (fare $0.10).
In 1893 there were five steam ferry terminals located across the city:
(1) First District Ferry from Canal Street to Algiers
(2) Second District Ferry from the French Market to Algiers
(3) Third District Ferry from Esplanade Avenue to Algiers
(4) Fourth District Ferry from Jackson Avenue to Gretna
(5) Sixth District Ferry from Louisiana Avenue to the Harvey Canal
There were three skiff ferries:
(1) Upperline Ferry from Upperline Street to the Millaudon (Ames) Sugar Plantation
(2) Carrollton Ferry from Carrollton Avenue to Nine Mile Point and Orange Groves
(3) Slaughter House Ferry from the U.S. Barracks to Algiers.
Individuals could also arrange for passage privately by negotiating with anyone willing to take them across the river. John McDonough was known to have one of his slaves row him across multiple times per day.
Pictured is the New Orleans, a catamaran ferry built in 1925 at Jeffersonville, Indiana by the Howard Ship Yard for the Algiers Public Service Company. She could carry 800 passengers and 40 cars. On July 21, 1939, she collided with the ocean freighter Edgar F. Luchenbach which caused the Luchenbach to sink. (University of Wisconsin LaCrosse Murphy Library)

Railroads needed a way to transport their railcars across the Mississippi River as well. This photograph shows the interior of an unloaded train ferry. The catamaran style sidewheeler from 1900 had two sets of tracks that could accommodate four to six railcars. The terminal was located at the foot of Esplanade Avenue and ran to Morgan's Landing in Algiers.

Derby Gisclair
Bienville and his party of explorers and settlers landed on Lake Pontchartrain and traveled by land from their portage near the mouth of Bayou St. John to the Mississippi River. This pathway was known to the native indigenous people and thus Bayou St. John became integral in the founding of New Orleans.
Being a strategic waterway, it was marked with a lighthouse, becoming the first lighthouse constructed outside of the thirteen original colonies when it was first built on Bayou St. John and Lake Pontchartrain in 1811. It was destroyed by a hurricane in 1837 but replaced with a larger, stronger tower whose 48-foot tower was situated above a small square building raised on pilings that was expanded in 1855. For more than 40-years the lighthouse operated without interruption even though it was damaged by the great hurricane of 1860. It was finally decommissioned in 1878. The structure seen here no longer exists.

Monday, we will collect your frozen food scraps on the veranda of the Audubon Clubhouse, the Golf Club at Audubon Park during our new summer hours from 4:30 - 6:00PM.
This free residential food waste collection will be every Monday from 4:30 - 6:00PM.
Please bring your FROZEN food scraps (no meat, no bones, no dairy) to the bins on the veranda between 4:30-6:00pm.
Please observe program hours.
Please do NOT drop off early or late.
Please do not leave scraps if you do not see bins.
Please bring your FROZEN fruit and vegetable scraps, eggshells, nut shells, tea bags, coffee grounds, plain pasta or bread.
Bring your food waste in a paper or compostable bag or bring your scraps in a reusable container.
We will have bins for you to empty your frozen scraps into. If you do not see bins, please do NOT just leave your scraps.
Seriously. They will cancel the program if you do.
NO MEAT, NO DAIRY, NO OILY FOODS, NO BONES.
Why FROZEN? Scraps must be frozen, to avoid potential smells, roaches and rodents. Our volunteers thank you!
Also, freezing your scraps means no smell, fruit flies, roaches or rodents for you at home PLUS freezing breaks down the cell membrane, speeding up the decomposition process.
Not everyone is ready to build and maintain a compost bin in their backyard or have a worm bin in their home - that's fine. You can still help reduce the amount of food waste going into landfills by participating in this free, easy & convenient food waste collection program!
DO NOT drop off any food waste outside the scheduled times.

Duration: 2 hr

Whether seen on HBO’s Treme or at their legendary Tuesday night gig at The Maple Leaf, Grammy-winning Rebirth Brass Band is a true New Orleans institution. Formed in 1983 by the Frazier brothers, the band has evolved from playing the streets of the French Quarter to playing festivals and stages all over the world. While committed to upholding the tradition of brass bands, they’ve also extended themselves into the realms of funk and hip-hop to create their signature sound. “Rebirth can be precise whenever it wants to,” says The New York Times, “but it’s more like a party than a machine. It’s a working model of the New Orleans musical ethos: as long as everybody knows what they’re doing, anyone can cut loose.” In the wake of the sometimes- stringent competition amongst New Orleans brass bands, Rebirth is the undisputed leader of the pack, and they show no signs of slowing down.

Steeped in the deep musical culture of New Orleans, the band brings a heavy dose of go-go funk to the New Orleans brass sound. In a blending of musical cultures stemming from cities separated by more than a thousand miles, a Brass-a-Holics live show takes the New Orleans brass band culture and infuses it with the electricity of Washington D.C.'s go-go. The resulting sound is both captivating and unique.

KING CAKE HUB 2022 LOCATIONS
Mid-City’s Zony Mash (3940 Thalia St) will host the main King Cake Hub location while The Gift Shop at Historic New Orleans Collection will host a pop-up second location
Jennifer Samuels, owner of the King Cake Hub, announced the retail King Cake shop will have two new locations for the 2022 Carnival season. The main King Cake Hub will share space with Zony Mash Beer Project. King Cake Hub will be located in the Broad facing portion of the building at 1464 S. Broad Street in New Orleans. Zony Mash is a brewery with a large creative selection of beers created in house. They also have tasting room with 21 brews on tap and being located in the historic Gem Theater they are also a destination for live entertainment. Zony Mash and King Cake Hub will be collaborating to release a special edition King Cake Stout beer which should be ready in time for King Cake Hub’s Annual Carnival Kickoff Party.
This will be King Cake Hub’s fourth year selling a wide assortment of the best king cakes you have ever and never tasted and will include new king cake offerings from several of our partner bakeries. Brennan’s is back this year with their Traditional and Pink Parade king cakes as well as a yet to be revealed “Special Release” filled king cake which all Coterie members will receive on January 6th. In addition to Brennan’s, NOCCA’s students are back in the kitchen working with Steve Himelfarb and the team from now shuttered Cake Cafe offering their hugely popular Goat Cheese Apple and new this year will be a Gluten and Dairy Free cake. Other returning partners are Caludas’s, Cannata’s, Caywood and Randazzo Bakery, Joe Gambino’s Bakery, Hi-Do Bakery, Bywater Bakery, Breads on Oak, Gracious, Bittersweet, Sugar Love and Big Boys Gooey Cakes will be back for season four!
The 2022 King Cake Coterie is on sale now with exciting new offerings and a discount for early shoppers. The Coterie is a King Cake of the Week Club featuring a different king cake each week. Brennan’s is launching Season 4 and then Cannata’s will be debuting a new Salted Caramel King Cake which is sure to be a hit. NOCCA, Bywater, Gracious, Gambino’s and Caluda’s will also be included. The Coterie makes a great holiday gift. In addition to the early bird discount the first 30 Subscribers will receive one of our amazing t-shirts by Studio Mundi!
This will be a bittersweet year as we mourn the loss of Will Samuels who had the crazy genius idea to bring all your favorite king cakes to one shop. Will’s wife and daughter will proudly and joyously continue the legacy which has delighted and overwhelmed king cake lovers for three years.
King Cake Hub will be open daily from 8:30am until 6:00pm beginning January 6 through Lundi Gras. Delivery will be available through Door Dash
