The New Orleans Saints are playing the hits in their Wild-Card Round game with the Chicago Bears, announcing on Twitter that they’ll be wearing the familiar combo of black home jerseys and matching black pants. The formalwear has served them well in recent years, and it’s been the most-popular look in the Sean Payton era, dating back to his hire in 2006.
Here’s how each combination has fared in wins and losses during that time span, ranked by winning percentage:
  1. White jerseys, white pants: 6-2 (.750)
  2. “Color Rush” alternates: 8-3 (.727)
  3. “Black and Gold” throwbacks: 2-1 (.667)
  4. Black jerseys, gold pants: 23-13 (.639)
  5. White jerseys, black pants: 41-25 (.621)
  6. Black jerseys, black pants: 45-29 (.608)
  7. White jerseys, gold pants: 32-24 (.571)

Saturday marked the beginning of the NFL's first-ever 'Super Wild Card Weekend,' and storylines abounded on a day of near non-stop football.
In the early game, the Bills hung on to beat the Colts and win their first playoff game in 25 years.
Their next opponent depends on what happens in Sunday's Steelers-Browns game. If the Steelers win, Buffalo will host Pittsburgh. If the Steelers lose, the Bills will host the winner of Titans-Ravens.

The Rams defense overwhelmed the Seahawks to defeat their NFC West rivals in Seattle on Sunday despite losing QB John Wolford to a neck injury early on.

The Rams next opponent depends on the Saints-Bears game. If New Orleans wins, L.A. will face off against the Packers, but if the Bears win, then the Rams will play the Buccaneers.
Tom Brady and Tampa Bay managed to hold off Taylor Heinicke and the Washington Football Team, but they didn't go down without a fight. Heinicke went 26 of 44 for 306 yards, one passing touchdown and one rushing touchdown in only his second NFL start.

Tampa Bay's victory is the franchise's first playoff win since winning Super Bowl XXXVII on Jan. 26, 2003, and Brady's 31st playoff victory of his career.
Who Tampa Bay will play next rests solely on the New Orleans Saints-Chicago Bears matchup. If the Saints win, the Bucs will play New Orleans, but if Chicago wins, it'll be Rams-Tampa Bay.

Finally, its Kings Day(Epiphany). We can eat king cake without angering the Mardi Gras gods. And Cannoli King Cakes are back at Nor-Joe's!!! Call in to reserve yours now.

The Madisonville Market, put on by the Northshore Maker’s Market Foundation, is more than just a farmer’s market. It’s a place where the community can interact with local artisans, crafters, farmers, chefs and more as they share their passion for making handmade goods, homegrown produce and prepared foods.
The weekly market takes place each Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the Madisonville Park & Playground, located on Pine Street near the 1000 block (closest cross street is Jahncke Ave.). Over 40 vendors offer hot and ready-to-eat foods, chocolates and candies, cookies and baked goods, jams and jellies, sauces and seasonings, flowers, plants, eggs, cheeses, fruits, veggies, local honey and selections by local vintners. Also, you'll find original art, handmade jewelry and accessories, hand-dyed fabrics, hand-sewn leather goods, wooden creations, soaps and body care products, health and wellness items, home decor items, baby clothes and hand sewn masks.
Shopping aside, families will enjoy the nearby playground, and be sure to look for on-site artists and massage therapists when you're ready to take a break from your shopping. There's also a concession stand on the ballfield with bottled water and sodas.

The non-profit Northshore Maker’s Market Foundation partners with local government, businesses, and other non-profit organizations to fund local projects such as the restoration of historic sites in Madisonville, and the education of young adults ages 14-24 in the arts, trades, agriculture, and entrepreneurship through donations, fundraisers, and mentorship efforts, all with an approach of attaining sustainable solutions for healthier living.
The Northshore Maker’s Market Foundation is sponsored by Resource Bank and local small businesses such as Flamjeaux Coffee Co., a small roasting house in Mandeville.
SAVE THE EAGLES DAY
Each year on January 10th, Save the Eagles Day reminds us of the majestic raptors that soar above the Earth – whether they are well populated or endangered. Due to the work of scientists and the public, the bald eagle was removed from this list in June 2007. Poaching, pesticides, and other dangers continue to threaten eagle populations.
While the day started as a way to save a specific pair of bald eagles and to raise awareness about the species, the observance has grown to encompass all species of eagles. Approximately 60 species of eagles populate the world. Most of the species are found in Eurasia and Africa. North, Central, and South America and Australia only account for about 14 species. However, no eagles are found in Hawaii. The most common species in North America are the bald and golden eagles.
Eagles are powerful birds of prey. An eagle’s sharp sense of sight paired with powerful muscles, piercing talons, and beak, make them primed for the hunt. They are also monogamous, mating for life.

NFL COVID Guidelines For All Patrons Attending Game

Face Coverings: A face covering is mandatory for all fans and staff and must be worn at all times (other than while actively eating or drinking). Failure to comply with this face covering mandate will result in ejection from the stadium. Be a good teammate-because wearing a face covering not only helps to protect you, and it helps to protect other fans, our team, and our staff.

Health Screening: All fans will be required to have a temperature check prior to entering the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. Guests that register a temperature of 100.4 or higher will be directed to a secondary temperature tent for a cool-down and given a second temperature reading. If the second reading is less than 100.4, the guest will be allowed to enter. If it remains above 100.4, the guest will not be permitted to attend the game.

POD Seating: Your ticketholder party will be seated together in a “pod” of adjacent seats. Your pod will be separated from other groups by approximately six (6) feet. Please do not sit in any seat other than the one you’ve been assigned in order to help us maintain pod integrity. Also, please remember to maintain social distancing and do not visit other guests in their seating pod.

Hand Sanitizers: Touch-free hand sanitizer locations are placed throughout the stadium near concession locations, entrances to restrooms, walkways into seating sections, and guest services locations.

Alcohol Sales: To remain consistent with all state policies regarding the management of the most current pandemic guidelines, alcohol will not be sold during the game.

Lights for Lions
DROP OFF YOUR DISCARDED STRANDS OF HOLIDAY LIGHTS AT THE ZOO!
Most holiday lights are not bio-degradable and are dangerous to animals if they get tangled in the strands. You can take action and make a positive impact on the natural world by recycling your lights and keeping them from going to a landfill.
Audubon Zoo will collect holiday string lights for recycling this holiday season. All proceeds from Audubon’s Lights for Lions recycling program will support the Wildlife Conservation Network’s Lion Recovery Fund. Lion populations have declined by half in just a quarter century. Their loss signals the loss of the wild in Africa.

NATIONAL OYSTERS ROCKEFELLER DAY
National Oysters Rockefeller Day on January 10th recognizes a dish so rich there was only one man’s name this dish could bear at the time. At least, that’s the story according to the chef who so masterfully created famous recipes in the French Quarter.
In 1889 in the renowned kitchen of Antoine’s, Jules Alciatore developed a recipe for baked oysters on the half shell with sauce and bread crumbs that would earn the name Oysters Rockefeller. A dish so rich Alciatore himself admitted, “…I know of no other name rich enough for their richness.”
While other restaurants serve similar dishes, only historic Antoine’s (founded by Antoine Alciatore, Jules Alciatore’s father in 1840) serves the original Oysters Rockefeller. Food Network’s Alton Brown even told us on Good Eats that Alciatore took the recipe to his grave. Others have tried to determine the finer ingredients without success. Only Antoine’s and the Alciatore family have the authentic recipe.
Having served over 3.5 million orders of Oysters Rockefeller, and counting, Antoine’s recipe has withstood the test of time and garnered the praises of culinary critics. Since 1889, the restaurant has numbered each order. Even today’s customers receive their privileged number identifying their place in the history of Oysters Rockefeller.

NATIONAL BITTERSWEET CHOCOLATE DAY
Chocolate lovers, it is time once again to celebrate as January 10th annually recognizes National Bittersweet Chocolate Day. (National Bittersweet Chocolate with Almonds Day is celebrated on November 7th.)
Chocolate comes from the seed of the tropical Theobroma cacao tree. Cacao, which has been cultivated for at least three millennia, is grown in Mexico, Central America, and Northern South America. The earliest known documentation of the use of cacao seeds is around 1100 BC. The cacao tree seed has an intensely bitter taste and must be fermented to develop the flavor.
Once the seeds have been fermented, the beans are then dried, cleaned, and roasted. After roasting, the shell is removed to produce cacao nibs. The cacao nibs are then ground into a cocoa mass which is pure chocolate in rough form. Usually, the cocoa mass is liquefied then molded with or without other ingredients. This is called chocolate liquor. The chocolate liquor may then be processed into two components: cocoa solids and cocoa butter.
Bittersweet chocolate is chocolate liquor to which sugar, cocoa butter, and vanilla have been added. It does have less sugar and more liquor than semisweet chocolate. However, the two of them may be interchangeable when baking.
Studies have revealed that there are certain health benefits from eating bittersweet chocolate in moderation, such as lowering blood pressure and helping to protect the heart.

1984 World’s Fair!

For a reflection on the floating palaces that churned the waters of the Mississippi River. In 1811, Captain Nicholas Roosevelt, Captain of the “New Orleans,” carried excursion passengers out of both Louisville and Cincinnati to Columbia, Missouri for $1 per person (about $25 today) – about one-quarter of a penny per mile. As steamboat travel became widely available, the operators paid strict attention to the creature comforts of their guests. This photograph from 1878 shows the interior of the steamboat “J.M. White,” with a lone passenger seated before a massive floor-length mirror.
Nearly every steamboat, regardless of size, took one or more parties on a pleasure excursion trip up or down the river during the course of its operations. Holidays, especially the Fourth of July and Mardi Gras, were popular times for excursions, and steamboats played a leading role in these celebrations. Brass bands entertained the guests and dancing would break out throughout the dining room in any available space. A fine dinner would also be served, with the very best beverages from fresh lemonade to wines and liquors in abundance. Gentlemen would later adjourn to the aft deck to enjoy a cigar and watch the long sparkling wake of the boat.
Steamboat excursions were also sponsored by various civic, political, fraternal, and religious groups. They were also employed in carrying people to fairs and celebrations in nearby river towns. These “fashionable” excursions from the different river ports afforded the captains a richer profit that the transport of cargo alone

How a German-Jewish immigrant left an indelible mark on New Orleans culture

Published:
Monday, December 9, 2019
By Eli A. Haddow, marketing associate

The name Isidore Newman has made its way into the homes of millions of Americans in the last decade thanks to a growing list of famous alumni of the school that bears his name—Michael Lewis and Walter Isaacson, who wrote the books that inspired The Big Short and Steve Jobs, and a number of professional football players.
Lurking beneath the sheen of Hollywood and the National Football League, though, is Isador Neumond, a penniless German-Jewish immigrant who arrived in New Orleans in 1853. Newman, as he would be called in America, began his illustrious commercial career with a hiccup: a cotton brokerage that fell victim to the economic and political turmoil of the Civil War. His subsequent rebound in the stock market, however, earned him great wealth, and he eventually helped found the New Orleans Stock Exchange—an organization for which he would later serve as president.

His cultural contributions span his business and philanthropic career. He helped reorganize and open the Maison Blanche chain of department stores that gave the world Mr. Bingle. In the 1890s, he acquired several railway lines, known locally as streetcars, and replaced their mules with electrical power lines, a technology that remains in use. He financed similar projects in Birmingham and Nashville in the interest of spurring the southern economy.
Newman’s philanthropic efforts included donations to Jewish, Christian, and black organizations. Many gifts were kept private, but some materialized in tangible ways that remain today. The Newman Bandstand on the Magazine Street end of Audubon Park is one example of this—an opulent fixture named after Newman to honor his yearly donations to finance free concerts in the park. (To this day, the park holds free concerts at the Newman Bandstand.)
Isidore Newman School was also born out of Newman’s commitment to the advancement of the community.
The Jewish Orphans home—formed as The New Orleans Association for Jewish Widows and Orphans after a decimating yellow fever epidemic in 1854—wanted a manual training school so that its children could learn skilled labor. As a member of the organization’s board, Newman promptly offered all of the funds necessary for the school’s construction on Peters Avenue, now known as Jefferson Avenue—a sum that totaled around $30,000. Newman and the board of the home insisted that the school be open to all local children, regardless of religion, but Jim Crow segregation laws kept the school closed to blacks for decades.

As recognition of Newman’s giving, he received the Picayune Loving Cup in 1903, the very same year that the Isidore Newman Manual Training School opened. Now, locals just call it Newman, solidifying a place in the New Orleans lexicon for a once-destitute man known as Isador Neumond.

schedule for curbside Christmas tree recycling
this year
The city said last week that the program has restored an area equal to almost 200 football fields. The trees also create important habitat for birds, fish, crabs, crawfish, and shrimp.
In Jefferson Parish, the trees have been used since 1991 to build wave-dampening fences to protect 2,000 feet of crucial shoreline in Goose Bayou in Laffitte, preserving the habitat of ducks, alligators, shrimp, fish and crabs.
The details of the programs vary from parish to parish, but tree stands, lights, tinsel and ornaments must be completely removed from the trees. Flocked or artificial trees cannot be used.

Below are the parish-by-parish details on how to recycle your trees.

St. Tammany
Trees can be brought to the St. Tammany Parish Fairgrounds at 1515 N. Florida St. in Covington and The Old Levee Board Property at 61134 Military Road in Slidell, during daylight hours. Trees will be accepted until Jan. 29.

Plaquemines Parish
Trees will be picked up through Jan. 22 and can also be dropped off at compactor locations in Port Sulphur and Belle Chasse.
St. Charles Parish
Trees can be dropped off at the East and West Bank Bridge Parks starting Dec. 26 and will be picked up curbside Jan. 9-10.

The Intergalactic Krewe Of Chewbacchus Embarks On 11th Annual Adventure
The Intergalactic Krewe of Chewbacchus will embark on its eleventh annual adventure, this time navigating the impossible terrain of socially distanced parading during a global pandemic. Life finds a way. On that day, The Sacred Drunken Wookiee will awaken from his season of slumber to present the theme DON’T PANIC! THE HITCHHIKER’S GUIDE TO THE NEW REALITY – VOLUME ONE.
Within the week leading up to VOLUME ONE, the krewe will release “The Guide” in the form of an online PDF brochure, which will include a map to the locations of where the devoted subkrewes of Chewbacchus will be stationed at homes and businesses around the city of New Orleans on January 23, 2021. Each station will represent a “chapter” of the guide. Fans and devotees of The Sacred Drunken Wookiee will be able to visit these stations on that date and collect the wonderful handmade throws of our subkrewes and marvel at the beautiful costumes and glorious contraptions of our members in a socially distanced manner. ALL CHEWBACCHUS MEMBERS WILL BE APPROPRIATELY MASKED, AND ADHERING TO CURRENT SOCIAL DISTANCE AND OUTDOOR GATHERING GUIDELINES. In return, it is expected that fans and spectators will return that respect and be masked and socially distanced as well. To emphasize a mindfulness to the safety and health of our members, The Overlords of Chewbacchus hereby issue the decree that no member of the public visiting a station of our subkrewes will be entertained with the gift of a throw if not masked and respecting current social distance guidelines.
Furthermore, in addition to the opportunity to still witness the splendor of our subkrewes and chance to acquire their beautiful handmade throws, DON’T PANIC! THE HITCHHIKER’S GUIDE TO THE NEW REALITY – VOLUME ONE will include a multimedia side quest for rare, one of a kind, artifacts of The Sacred Drunken Wookiee. Those artifacts will be found at randomly selected subkrewe stations and will reveal clues to the location of a prized collection of rare treasures, a Chewbacchus merchandise prize package, a lifetime membership to the Intergalactic Krewe of Chewbacchus, and the Royal title “Ultimate Survivor of the New Reality.”
Tickets are now available online to purchase, but get them fast seating is limited.
