NATIONAL EAT YOUR BEANS DAY | JULY 3
National Eat Your Beans Day is a “live healthy” holiday observed every year on July 3rd. This day celebrates the bean vegetable in all sizes, shapes, and colors. Beans (legumes) date back to the early seventh millennium BCE, making them one of the longest-cultivated plants.

As they were seven millennia ago, today, beans are a significant source of protein. If you’re looking for complex carbohydrates, folate, fiber, and iron, eat some beans. They are excellent sources for each of those. A very healthy choice for any meal or snack, they are also an excellent source of fiber, low in fat and high in complex carbohydrates, folate, and iron.
  • There are approximately 40,000 bean varieties in the world.
  • Only a fraction of these varieties are mass-produced for regular consumption.
Let’s Snack!
That’s a lot of beans! How do we know which ones to choose? Snacking on chickpeas provides us with one of the best choices. Also known as garbanzo beans, these legumes pack a whopping 12.5 grams of fiber, 71 % of the recommended daily intake (RDI) of folate, 84% RDI of Manganese, and 26% RDI of Iron per serving in 1 cup. Add chickpeas to stews like you would any bean. However, they also roast nicely with your favorite herbs and spices for a delicious and healthy snack

Downtown attractions
offer free admission
first Sunday of every month
Visitors to downtown Baton Rouge are given access to the Louisiana Arts and Science Museum, Magnolia Mound, the LSU Museum of Art and Old State Capitol for free on the first Sunday of every month.
With most attractions only a short walk from each other downtown, an entire day can be centered around a fun, affordable outing.
“It’s been going on for 10 years, at least,” said Paul Arrigo, President and CEO of Visit Baton Rouge. “The museums are relatively inexpensive to begin with, but I think the fact that they’re open to the public and free on that first Sunday is really significant.”
Arrigo, who has served in his position for over 20 years believes First Free Sunday is a great opportunity for locals and visitors alike to take in the sights of Baton Rouge.

The Louisiana Arts and Science Museum
Admittance to the museum costs adult patrons $12 if they aren’t visiting on the First Free Sunday. The museum is open from 1-5 p.m. on Sundays.
The museum seeks to further the understanding and appreciation of art and science to the general public and features a wide array of exhibits, from Ancient Egypt to the Solar System and the cosmos.
Patrons admitted on the First Free Sunday will also have unlimited viewing access to the facility’s planetarium.
In addition to the museum's permanent exhibits, the museum is also featuring these changing exhibits:
In Empathy We Trust— An exhibit that reimagines the characters from iconic works of art history with different identities, races and genders; through October 30
Iridescence— As one’s perspectives changes, so is the color they perceive when something is iridescent; through July 31
Our Louisiana— A broad collection of items tied to Louisiana that ask, “what is art?”; through Jan. 14, 2024
Magnolia Mound
As the only place not within walking distance of the other First Free Sunday venues, it should probably be done first or last.

Magnolia Mound is a special BREC park that used to be a 900 acre plantation. The park is open from 1-4 p.m. on Sundays and would usually cost adult patrons $12 for guided tours or $5 for a self-guided tour.
Once inside the park, visitors can explore the grounds and see the Historic House Museum, the Open-Hearth Kitchen, a Pigeoneer, Housing for Enslaved Families, the Overseer’s House and the three-seat Privy.
A rare example of vernacular architecture brought by settlers from France and the West Indies, the grounds hopes to illustrate the unique French-Creole culture which is definitive to Louisiana while also accounting and accrediting the generations of enslaved people that once lived on and labored the grounds.
The LSU Museum of Art at the Shaw Center for the Arts
The LSU MoA’s humble beginnings in Memorial Tower seem far-fetched compared to the floor they operate now.
The art museum is open 1-5 p.m. on Sundays and would usually charge adult guests a $5 entry fee.
Local artists are supported and showcased by the LSU MoA, but they also feature art of regional and national significance as the museum seeks to bolden Louisiana’s place in the wide world of art.
The LSU MoA is currently exhibiting:
Eugene Martin: The Creative Act— An exhibit that focuses on Martin’s unique brand of whimsical, automatist abstract art; through October 2
Art in Louisiana: Views into the Collection— The reinstallation of the museum’s signature exhibition has been on display since 2016, as different curators offer different views in the strengths of the museum’s collections; ongoing

The Louisiana Old State Capitol
The Old State Capitol is open to the public for free, year-round, not just on First Free Sunday.
Recently renovated, the Old State Capitol features a museum and preserved chambers for guests to inspect. A detailed Huey P. Long exhibit is one of the highlights of a visit.
Visitors can book tours of the Old State Capitol. Tickets for a special movie called “Ghosts of the Castle” are available for $3.
When going up the main staircase, don’t forget to look up into the beautiful stained glass skylight.
Arrigo recommends that students invite friends and family to take advantage of First Free Sunday when they’re in town visiting.
He said that the COVID-19 years were tough, but Baton Rouge is bouncing back.
The next free Sunday will be July 3.
Faubourg Brewing Co. is bringing the best parts of a backyard 4th of July party to our brew park! Monthlong P.O.W.E.R. Plates Women’s Fundraising Program , July 2

NEW ORLEANS — Fidelity Bank and the Louisiana Hospitality Foundation (LHF) will celebrate women in the hospitality industry again this summer with their annual launch of the unique women’s fundraising program P.O.W.E.R. Plates on July 1, 2022. .

The monthlong celebration of women in the state’s hospitality industry is part of Fidelity’s “Potential of Women Entrepreneurs Realized” (P.O.W.E.R.) program, which caters to thousands of female-owned businesses. Currently, program officials are seeking women-owned, women-managed or women-led restaurants and bars to participate in the annual fundraising program. The goal of the program is to raise awareness and drive business to women-led restaurants in South Louisiana during the slow summer business months.

“The hospitality industry in Louisiana and its workers are vital to our state. P.O.W.E.R. Plates’ mission is to help support this critical industry by driving business to these women-led restaurants.” said Elizabeth Broekman, Fidelity Bank Vice President and Director of P.O.W.E.R. “In addition, we are raising awareness of the Louisiana Hospitality Foundation’s mission of supporting Louisiana’s hospitality industry workforce during times of personal crisis for our workers in such a vital industry.”

The Louisiana Hospitality Foundation and Fidelity Bank are matching donations up to $2,500 for this year’s program. After a record 67 restaurants and bars participated in 2021, officials have set a goal of recruiting 75 restaurants throughout South Louisiana. Neat Wine is the participating wine sponsor and a special beer for the program was released by Port Orleans Brewery.

“Women in the Louisiana hospitality industry have a tremendous impact in our lives any time we go out for a meal, a drink or stay in a hotel,” said Fidelity Bank President and CEO Chris Ferris. “Programs like Fidelity Bank’s P.O.W.E.R. program are crucial in bringing women to the forefront and highlighting their successes and P.O.W.E.R. Plates is the perfect way to showcase these amazing women.”

Queen Nefertari’s Egypt
New Orleans Museum of Art

Public

The queen is coming.  "Queen Nefertari's Egypt" is on view through July 17, 2022, at NOMA.

Queen Nefertari, the royal wife of Pharaoh Ramesses II (reigned 1279–13 BCE), is linked to some of the most magnificent monuments of ancient Egypt. Appearing in sculpture and images, and identified in inscriptions on buildings associated with Ramesses II, she is also known through a complete temple consecrated to her in Abu Simbel, beside the one dedicated to her husband. Her tomb is the largest and most richly decorated in the Valley of the Queens. It was discovered in the early 20th century by a team of archaeologists led by Ernesto Schiaparelli, then director of the Museo Egizio in Turin.
The team’s discoveries and the role of Nefertari and other powerful women in ancient Egypt are brought to life through the 230 exceptional objects in this exhibition, drawn from the collection of the Museo Egizio. These include statues, jewelry, vases, papyrus, steles, wooden coffins, and stone sarcophagi, as well as tools and various items of daily life from the artisan village of Deir-el-Medina, home to those who created the royal tombs. These astonishing treasures showcase the legacy of the royal wives, sisters, daughters, and mothers of pharaohs, and sometimes even pharaohs themselves, as well as the artists who contributed to the creation of these stunning objects.
__
Queen Nefertari’s Egypt is organized by the Museo Egizio, Turin, and StArt, in collaboration with the New Orleans Museum of Art. The presentation in New Orleans is made possible by the generous support of the Eugenie and Joseph Jones Family Foundation and the Consulate General of Italy in Houston

NATIONAL CHOCOLATE WAFER DAY | JULY 3
If you love chocolate, National Chocolate Wafer Day on July 3rd allows you to indulge in a delicately sweet cookie with a history. Have one for breakfast, lunch, or dinner!

Also called sugar wafers, these delicate snacks melt in your mouth. Made since the mid-1800s in the United States, makers called the cookies many names; wafer cookies, sugar wafers, sugar biscuits, fairy wafers. While many enjoyed them as snacks, they also became favorite after-dinner treats or served during teas. Lightly flavored and layered with a creamy filling, the thin cookies delight folks of all ages.
Numerous companies produced them in North America. Regardless of the company, each one considered the production of these cookies an art form. They took pride in everything from their ingredients to the employees and the recipe to the packaging. Over time, companies merged. By the 1930s, the number of production companies dwindled.
Today, they remain an American favorite. With a waffle surface pattern and thin layers, these cookies make an excellent addition to ice cream. Use them as an ingredient in cakes and cheesecakes. While you’re baking, use them to decorate, too. If you prefer pie, crushed wafers make a delicious chocolate crust. There are so many ways chocolate wafers can be enjoyed. If you’ve never tried them, this holiday is the time to give them a whirl.
NATIONAL FRIED CLAM DAY | JULY 3
National Fried Clam Day is observed annually on July 3rd. Fried clams are an iconic food in the New England states. Seaside clam shacks or roadside restaurants serve these delectable nuggets and tend to be the primary source for anyone seeking them. The clams are dipped in milk and coated with a combination of regular, corn, and/or pastry flour. Then the coated clams are fried in oil. They can be “clam strips” (sliced parts of hard-shell clams) or whole soft-shell clams. Whole soft-shell clams impart a fuller flavor. However, some restaurants remove the clam’s neck.

July 3, 1916
In 1914, Lawrence Henry “Chubby” Woodman and his wife Bessie opened a small concession stand on Main Street in Essex, Massachusetts. On weekends they sold small grocery items, homemade potato chips, and fresh clams that Chubby dug himself. At first, the business was slow. But on July 3, 1916, things began to change.
On that day, Chubby complained to a local fisherman named Tarr who was visiting the stand, “Business is slower than a couple of snails headed uphill.”
fried clams in a box
“Business was lower than a couple of snails headed uphill.” Chubby Woodman
Tarr, while nibbling on the tasty homemade potato chips, noticed a bucket of clams nearby and jokingly said, “Why don’t you fry up some of your clams? If they’re as tasty as those potato chips of yours, you’ll never have to worry about having enough customers.” Fried clams were unheard of, and two other customers rewarded Tarr’s comment with cold stares. “That’s ridiculous!” said one. The other one remarked, “Clams have shells.” The poor fisherman muttered, “I wasn’t serious. It was a joke. I know you can’t fry clams like chips!”

However, when the three men left, Chubby and Bessie started to think about it. What if they did fry up some of the clams and sold them? If they tasted good, they would have created a way to increase the demand for their own shucked clams. “Let’s try it,” Bessie said as she tossed a slab of lard into the fry pot usually used to make potato chips. They shucked some clams and experimented with different batters, having some locals try them out. When the overall verdict was “delicious!” they knew they were on to something big.
July 4, 1916
The next day, during the 4th of July parade, Chubby and Bessie presented the first fried clams to the citizens of Essex. The Yankee appetite has never been the same since. A year later a Boston fish market advertised “now equipped to serve the new tasty treat – fried clams.” And Howard Johnson, owner of a chain of restaurants on the East Coast, came himself to learn how to make fried clams from Chubby.
Clam Plate
On the backside of their wedding certificate, Lawrence and Bessie wrote what they considered to be important family events. The first two lines were the birth dates of their two oldest sons, Wilbur and Henry. The third line was the other important birth date in the family. It read: “We fried the first fried clam—in the town of Essex, July 3, 1916.”
Now, over 100 years and six generations later clams are still frying at Woodman’s, where it all began.

Pontchartrain Beach opened on June 30, 1928. Did you ever visit the amusement park? What were your favorite rides/things to do? Pictured is Pontchartrain Beach in the 1950s.
Pontchartrain Beach was an amusement park located in New Orleans, on the south shore of Lake Pontchartrain. It opened across Bayou St. John from an existing amusement resort at Old Spanish Fort. Pontchartrain Beach's original location is the present-day lakefront neighborhood of Lake Terrace.
In the early 1930s, subsequent to the construction of a seawall extending from West End to the Industrial Canal which created a new shoreline for Lake Pontchartrain, Pontchartrain Beach was moved to a new location at the lake end of Elysian Fields Avenue, a location formerly offshore of Milneburg.
Pontchartrain Beach included a beach with a large art deco style bathhouse and swimming pools, amusement rides (including a wooden roller coaster called the Zephyr), and concession stands. The park featured live music concerts, including many local musicians and touring national acts such as Elvis Presley.
Other rides and amusements included the Zephyr Junior, Smoky Mary, the Wild Maus, Musik Express, Log Ride, the Ragin' Cajun (a modern, looping steel coaster), the Bug, Paratrooper, Scrambler, Calypso, the "airplanes", Haunted House, Ghost Train, bumper cars, carousel, Ferris wheel, the Monster, Trabant, Sky Ride, Hard Rock, Galaxy, Laff in the Dark, Magic Rainbow, Red Baron, and Kiddieland. As with other amusement or theme parks, over time certain older rides were changed out for new ones.
In addition to rides, there were also the summertime shows which changed every few years (Skipper & Dolly dolphin show, Great American High Dive Show, Merlin's Magic Rainbow Show). For a few years there was also a fairly large petting zoo with many farm animals and a huge red barn house. A miniature golf course was added, when this pastime became popular. Just outside the entrance gates was the Bali Hai Tiki-style restaurant. Another popular restaurant was the Ship Ahoy, which featured hamburgers and seafood.
Pontchartrain Beach closed to the public on September 5, 1983. The main reason it closed down was due to declining attendance.
Derby Gisclair

A photograph of the overflowing crowds outside City Hall (Gallier Hall) on December 11, 1889, on the last day the public was allowed to view the casket of Jefferson Davis is it lay in state. He was buried the next day in New Orleans in the Army of Northern Virginia tomb at Metairie Cemetery. However, in 1893 Davis was reinterred in Richmond, Virginia at Hollywood Cemetery, per his widow Varina's request.
To the left of City Hall is the original Soule Business College building, and to the right is the home of Captain Slocomb, a partner in Slocomb Baldwin Hardware on Canal Street.

Whether seen on HBO’s Treme or at their legendary Tuesday night gig at The Maple Leaf, Grammy-winning Rebirth Brass Band is a true New Orleans institution. Formed in 1983 by the Frazier brothers, the band has evolved from playing the streets of the French Quarter to playing festivals and stages all over the world. While committed to upholding the tradition of brass bands, they’ve also extended themselves into the realms of funk and hip-hop to create their signature sound. “Rebirth can be precise whenever it wants to,” says The New York Times, “but it’s more like a party than a machine. It’s a working model of the New Orleans musical ethos: as long as everybody knows what they’re doing, anyone can cut loose.” In the wake of the sometimes- stringent competition amongst New Orleans brass bands, Rebirth is the undisputed leader of the pack, and they show no signs of slowing down

  • James Rivers is a New Orleans musical treasure. He plays a mixture of Rock, progressive Jazz, Rhythm and Blues and Gospel; the sort of music that implies something for everybody when it’s played. Rivers, one of only three Jazz musicians ever known to play the bagpipes, would probably call himself a saxophonist, but his forte is really an amazing musical dexterity that has helped him master a dozen other instruments.
