NATIONAL BARCODE DAY | JUNE 26
National Barcode Day commemorates more than 40 years of efficiency and accuracy that began on June 26, 1974, when a clerk scanned a 10-pack of Wrigley’s Juicy Fruit gum at a Marsh supermarket in Troy, OH. On that day, the barcode system invented by George Lauer, an IBM engineer, began to change the world.

Since then, barcodes have been revolutionizing industries all over the world. Barcodes, also known as UPC, 1 Dimensional (1D) codes, contain data that help businesses and organizations do their jobs more easily. A more modern version of the barcode is called a QR code, or a 2 dimensional (2D) code. The QR code contains even more data than the 1D code.
Barcodes contain a wealth of information, including pricing, product, dates, manufacturer, and shipping. They are ideal for tracking inventory and sales, but they do so much more than that. Almost every industry uses barcodes, and they likely make your life easier without you even knowing it. Where can you find barcodes besides retail products?
  • VINs – Tracking a car’s history became easier when a barcode was added to the VIN.
  • Libraries – Barcodes track books, videos, periodicals, resources in and out of the library.
  • Logistics – Every major shipper uses barcodes to track shipments and deliver your orders.
  • Healthcare – Barcodes help keep patient care more streamlined and records at the provider’s fingertips.
  • Agriculture – Farmers use barcodes to track harvests and livestock.
Imagine how different our lives would be without these unobtrusive black and white bars and that satisfying beep every time we scan a product, delivery, or file. It is certainly a technology that will be around for a long time, simplifying our lives. That’s another reason to celebrate National Barcode Day!

Next Tuesday at market (June 28th), our Programs team is hosting a tomato taste testing event where you can come see for yourself just how good these tomatoes are!

Recipe of the Week
Fried Green Tomatoes
We are officially in the thick of tomato season! At market, you can find green tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, creole tomatoes, and an abundance of heirloom tomatoes! Unlike all other tomatoes, green tomatoes may not be as enjoyable cut up and eaten raw. So what can we do with them? Well, who doesn’t love fried food?!?
Ingredients
  • 3 medium-sized, firm green tomatoes
  • Kosher salt
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon Cajun seasoning
  • 1/2 cup milk or buttermilk
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/3 cup fine white cornmeal
  • 1/2 cup fine dry bread crumbs
  • 1/4 cup peanut, canola, or olive oil for frying
Directions
Cut unpeeled tomatoes into 1/2 inch slices. Sprinkle slices with salt. Let tomato slices stand for 5 minutes.
While the salted green tomato slices are resting, place in three separate, shallow bowls: 1) the flour and Cajun seasoning, 2) buttermilk and egg, and 3) breadcrumbs and cornmeal. Whisk together the egg and buttermilk.
Heat the oil in a skillet on medium heat. Dip the green tomato slices in the flour-seasoning, then the buttermilk-egg mixture, then the cornmeal-breadcrumb mix.
In the skillet, fry half of the coated tomato slices at a time, for 3 to 5 minutes on each side or until brown. Set the cooked tomatoes on paper towels to drain.

 ·
Join us Sunday, June 26th at 11:30 am for story time with Shannon Atwater, author of Alligators Don’t Like Flowers.

This event is free to attend. Copies of the book will be available for purchase for $19.99.
Angelo the alligator was different in every way. With eyes bright blue and skin snow white, he loved to watch the butterflies and fireflies. One day he came upon a marsh filled with flowers and wove some into a crown. What happens when he wears his beautiful new crown? Artist and illustrator Shannon Kelley Atwater shares a sweet story of friendship and community celebrating the differences that make individuals special and overcoming the stereotypes that separate them. Her expressive illustrations capture the feelings of friendship, joy, and—sometimes—alienation that children experience in a story that provides a valuable lesson of acceptance. When the swamp friends unite in a procession that rejoices in the things that make them unique, something truly magical occurs. Come along and join their parade!
Originally from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Shannon Kelley Atwater came to New Orleans in 2005 to attend Loyola University, where she received a BA in visual arts. As has been the case for many other artists before her, the city wrapped her in its magic and she has been here ever since, despite storms and challenges. After college, she sold her art on the fences of Jackson Square and eventually opened a gallery space in the French Quarter to showcase more than fifty different local artists. A member of the Mardi Gras Krewe des Fleurs, Atwater now focuses on family and commissioned art projects

The Tony winner looks at World War II veterans and their efforts to form a band, win a contest and live life on the homefront.

Tulane Summer Lyric Theatre kicks off its summer season with “Bandstand,” which opened on Broadway in 2017. In the musical, a group of veterans returning from World War II are just trying to get their lives back to normal when the chance to find fame and fortune via a radio singing contest entices them to follow their dreams. At Tulane’s Dixon Hall. Find tickets via liberalarts.tulane.edu/summer-lyric-theatre.
_____

It's 1945, and American soldiers return home to ticker-tape parades and overjoyed families.
Private First-Class Donny Novitski, singer and songwriter, returns with the hope of rebuilding his life with just the shirt on his back and a dream in his heart. When NBC announces a national competition to find the nation's next swing band sensation, Donny joins forces with a motley group of fellow veterans, and together they form a band unlike any the nation has ever seen. Complicated relationships, the demands of the competition, and the challenging after-effects of war challenge these musicians. But when Donny meets a beautiful young singer named Julia, he finds the perfect harmony in words and music that could take this band of brothers all the way to the live radio broadcast finale in New York City! Victory will require every ounce of talent, stamina, and raw nerve that these musicians possess. Notable songs are “Donny Novitski” and “Welcome Home.”
Rare in musical theatre, the main actors play their own instruments.

Queen Nefertari’s Egypt
New Orleans Museum of Art

Public

The queen is coming.  "Queen Nefertari's Egypt" is on view through July 17, 2022, at NOMA.

Queen Nefertari, the royal wife of Pharaoh Ramesses II (reigned 1279–13 BCE), is linked to some of the most magnificent monuments of ancient Egypt. Appearing in sculpture and images, and identified in inscriptions on buildings associated with Ramesses II, she is also known through a complete temple consecrated to her in Abu Simbel, beside the one dedicated to her husband. Her tomb is the largest and most richly decorated in the Valley of the Queens. It was discovered in the early 20th century by a team of archaeologists led by Ernesto Schiaparelli, then director of the Museo Egizio in Turin.
The team’s discoveries and the role of Nefertari and other powerful women in ancient Egypt are brought to life through the 230 exceptional objects in this exhibition, drawn from the collection of the Museo Egizio. These include statues, jewelry, vases, papyrus, steles, wooden coffins, and stone sarcophagi, as well as tools and various items of daily life from the artisan village of Deir-el-Medina, home to those who created the royal tombs. These astonishing treasures showcase the legacy of the royal wives, sisters, daughters, and mothers of pharaohs, and sometimes even pharaohs themselves, as well as the artists who contributed to the creation of these stunning objects.
__
Queen Nefertari’s Egypt is organized by the Museo Egizio, Turin, and StArt, in collaboration with the New Orleans Museum of Art. The presentation in New Orleans is made possible by the generous support of the Eugenie and Joseph Jones Family Foundation and the Consulate General of Italy in Houston

NATIONAL COCONUT DAY | JUNE 26
Summer starts in earnest on June 26th when National Coconut Day arrives! The coconut offers sweet support for our bodies in several ways.

Coconut oil alone falls into the superfood category due to its medium-chain triglyceride (MCTs) content and all that they seem to do. Whether supporting a weight loss program, moisturizing skin, and hair or metabolizing into energy, coconut oil plays a significant role in your body.
We use the whole coconut in many different forms for our bodies and everyday cooking. From shredded coconut to milk, cream, water, and oil, each provides essential nutrients and flavor. Its anti-viral and anti-microbial properties are notable as well.
Coconut is rich in fiber, Vitamin B6, iron, and minerals like magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, selenium, and zinc. The oil from coconut moisturizes our skin and also helps keep our skin clear and hair silky, too.

Of course, in the kitchen, we love coconut! Beyond baked goods, coconut infuses sweet flavor to our cooking, and because the MCTs in coconut oil doesn’t absorb in the body as fat, it is an ideal alternative to other oils and fats.
The flavor of coconut oil makes the best air-popped popcorn. Add coconut milk to your curry recipe and win rave reviews! Those who are lactose intolerant and craving ice cream know that coconut milk also makes an excellent substitute for creamy homemade ice cream. And of course, it’s not summer without a piña colada!
Beyond the fruit and water of the coconut that we consume as food, consumers also use the husk and shells as a potting medium, carbon filtration, charcoal, bio-fuel, and even organic cat litter. Another use for the husks is the production of coir, which manufacturers use in making mattresses, doormats, and more.
NATIONAL CHOCOLATE PUDDING DAY | JUNE 26
Each year on June 26th, National Chocolate Pudding Day gets us all excited for a serving of this creamy dessert. Children and adults alike love chocolate pudding and have done so for generations. Usually eaten as a snack or dessert, chocolate pudding is also used as a filling for chocolate creme pie.

Chocolate pudding is usually made with milk and sugar, flavored with chocolate and vanilla then thickened with flour or cornstarch. However, some recipes do use eggs when making the pudding. Historically, chocolate pudding is a variation of chocolate custard, using starch as a thickener instead of eggs. The 1903 edition of Mary Harris Frazer’s Kentucky Receipt Book and the 1918 edition of Fannie Farmer’s Boston Cooking School Cook Book, both printed recipes for the earlier version, using both eggs and flour.
In 1934, General Foods (Jello) introduced a chocolate pudding mix as “Walter Baker’s Dessert.” However, in 1936, they renamed it “Pickle’s Pudding.”
Chocolate pudding can be purchased ready-made and sold in grocery stores, convenience stores, and gas stations. The popular brands include Jell-O by the Kraft Foods Corporation and Snack Pack by Hunt’s.

Zony Mash is proud to be the home of Rebirth Brass Band EVERY Tuesday through June!
Doors at 7pm, Show at 8pm
Whether seen on HBO’s Treme or at their legendary Tuesday night gig at The Maple Leaf, Grammy-winning Rebirth Brass Band is a true New Orleans institution. Formed in 1983 by the Frazier brothers, the band has evolved from playing the streets of the French Quarter to playing festivals and stages all over the world. While committed to upholding the tradition of brass bands, they’ve also extended themselves into the realms of funk and hip-hop to create their signature sound. “Rebirth can be precise whenever it wants to,” says The New York Times, “but it’s more like a party than a machine. It’s a working model of the New Orleans musical ethos: as long as everybody knows what they’re doing, anyone can cut loose.” In the wake of the sometimes- stringent competition amongst New Orleans brass bands, Rebirth is the undisputed leader of the pack, and they show no signs of slowing down

  • James Rivers is a New Orleans musical treasure. He plays a mixture of Rock, progressive Jazz, Rhythm and Blues and Gospel; the sort of music that implies something for everybody when it’s played. Rivers, one of only three Jazz musicians ever known to play the bagpipes, would probably call himself a saxophonist, but his forte is really an amazing musical dexterity that has helped him master a dozen other instruments.

Monthlong P.O.W.E.R. Plates Women’s Fundraising Program Begins Friday, July 1

NEW ORLEANS — Fidelity Bank and the Louisiana Hospitality Foundation (LHF) will celebrate women in the hospitality industry again this summer with their annual launch of the unique women’s fundraising program P.O.W.E.R. Plates on July 1, 2022. .

The monthlong celebration of women in the state’s hospitality industry is part of Fidelity’s “Potential of Women Entrepreneurs Realized” (P.O.W.E.R.) program, which caters to thousands of female-owned businesses. Currently, program officials are seeking women-owned, women-managed or women-led restaurants and bars to participate in the annual fundraising program. The goal of the program is to raise awareness and drive business to women-led restaurants in South Louisiana during the slow summer business months.

“The hospitality industry in Louisiana and its workers are vital to our state. P.O.W.E.R. Plates’ mission is to help support this critical industry by driving business to these women-led restaurants.” said Elizabeth Broekman, Fidelity Bank Vice President and Director of P.O.W.E.R. “In addition, we are raising awareness of the Louisiana Hospitality Foundation’s mission of supporting Louisiana’s hospitality industry workforce during times of personal crisis for our workers in such a vital industry.”

The Louisiana Hospitality Foundation and Fidelity Bank are matching donations up to $2,500 for this year’s program. After a record 67 restaurants and bars participated in 2021, officials have set a goal of recruiting 75 restaurants throughout South Louisiana. Neat Wine is the participating wine sponsor and a special beer for the program was released by Port Orleans Brewery.

“Women in the Louisiana hospitality industry have a tremendous impact in our lives any time we go out for a meal, a drink or stay in a hotel,” said Fidelity Bank President and CEO Chris Ferris. “Programs like Fidelity Bank’s P.O.W.E.R. program are crucial in bringing women to the forefront and highlighting their successes and P.O.W.E.R. Plates is the perfect way to showcase these amazing women.”

The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation will present five performances in 2022 Jazz & Heritage Summer Concert Series. The series will feature local musicians playing at the George and Joyce Wein Jazz & Heritage Center at 1225 N. Rampart Street.

Saturday, July 9 | Gal Holiday and the Honky Tonk Revue
Sometimes called “The Punk Rock Patsy Cline”, “The Gal” is Vanessa Niemann, an Appalachian-born songstress and with the Honky Tonk Revue in tow, this band offers a vanguard approach to country music. Evocative songwriting and an infectious sound make this a rollicking, toe-tapping musical ruckus.

Saturday, July 16 | Arséne DeLay
American singer-songwriter Arséne DeLay glides through jazz, R&B, blues, rock and roll, funk, and folk. With a musical family legacy recalling New Orleans’ most storied melodic contributors, Arsene pays homage to her heritage through her constant authentic musicianship.

Saturday, July 23 | Lynn Drury
Local New Orleans musician Lynn Drury has performed her unique style of roots rock on most of the stages across the city. At once personal with a voice distinct, Drury is bringing definitive New Orleans Americana to the Jazz & Heritage Summer Concert Series
Tickets are $10. All proceeds from this concert series directly support efforts of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the concert begins promptly at 8 p.m. Seating is limited, so please register in advance here.
