AIR FORCE BIRTHDAY | SEPTEMBER 18

The Air Force Birthday on September 18th commemorates the establishment of The United States Air Force.

Almost from the moment the Wright brothers found a way to soar with the birds, the military incorporated aeronautical pursuits into their missions. However, the Air Force did not become a separate branch of the Armed Forces until September 18, 1947.

The military established the Signal Corps as the first aeronautical force in the United States. During the Civil War, the first missions provided visional communications via flags and torchlight from aerial balloons. Even so, the Signal Corps didn’t become an official branch of the Army until 1863. Its creation made way for more aeronautical training and study.

Since then, military air service has gone through many names and commands. A few examples are the Air Service of the US Army, the Air Corps, and the Army Air Force. Finally, in 1947, President Truman signed the National Security Act establishing the United States Air Force as a separate branch of the military.

As a result of pursuing advanced technology and superior airmen, the US Air Force emerged as the swiftest tactical force ready to deploy anywhere at a moment’s notice. On September 18, celebrate the airmen and women who are on watch every day.

Isabel’s Tamales & Produce

Hailing from Independence, Louisiana, Isabel and the Mendez family grow a variety of produce on their farm, ranging from okra in the summertime to broccoli and cauliflower come winter. This time of year you can find peppers, muscadine, eggplant, tomatoes, and a variety of other in-season produce on their tables. In addition to her fresh produce, Isabel’s is also famously known for her freshly made tamales (veggie, cheese, jalapeño, and bean), available at Thursday market, and breakfast burritos, available at Tuesday and Sunday market. Her well-known tamales and burritos are best paired with her homemade tortilla chips and salsas. Come late September, Isabel’s will also be offering pupusas - a delicious Salvadoran street food made of a thick corn tortilla and stuffed with a savory filling! Isabel’s pupusas will be freshly cooked at market, filled with your choice of beans & cheese or spinach & cheese and served with curtido, Salvadoran cabbage slaw. Let the countdown to enjoying this delicious, savory dish at market begin!

Free matinee screening, 2 p.m. September 18, 410 Chartres.

Bring the family!

The Historic New Orleans Collection will host a screening of Jason Berry's "City of a Million Dreams," an acclaimed documentary that explores New Orleans jazz funerals and second lines. A panel discussion will follow the screening. Panelists include Jason Berry (director, producer, writer), Simonette Berry (co-producer, writer), Monique Moss (Congo Square creative director), Tim Watson (editor), and Dr. Michael White (narrator, composer).

Register to attend this free event: www.hnoc.org

Parts joyous and mournful, "City of a Million Dreams" takes a deep look at New Orleans through the timeless traditions of jazz funerals and second line parades. Director Jason Berry imbues the film, made over the course of 25 years, with well-researched history, interviews, vintage photos and videos, and pulsating, often hypnotic parade footage. The film traces the evolution of rituals and traditions from the late 18th century to today, from the African rhythms and ring dances of Congo Square and the emergence of European-style marching bands to early 20th-century jazz musicians and the celebratory second line processions of today. "City of a Million Dreams" introduces viewers to a beautiful mosaic that is part of African American history while also exploring the rich intersections that music and remembrance have across all cultural lines in New Orleans. See less

Regarded by many theatre professionals as the finest musical ever created, Gypsy is the ultimate tale of an ambitious stage mother fighting for her daughters’ success – while secretly yearning for her own. Set all across America in the 1920s and 30s, when vaudeville was dying and burlesque was born, Arthur Laurents’ landmark show explores the world of two-bit show business with brass, humor, heart, and sophistication.

NATIONAL CHEESEBURGER DAY | SEPTEMBER 18

National Cheeseburger Day on September 18th honors America’s favorite sandwich with a slice of cheese.

A few days ago, we celebrated National Double Cheeseburger Day. This food holiday is the lighter version. While only a single stack, this tasty burger still earns a celebration!

There are many theories to the beginning of the cheeseburger dating back to the 1920s. One story suggests that Lionel Sternberger invented the cheeseburger in 1926 while working at his father’s Pasadena, California sandwich shop, The Rite Spot. During an experiment, he dropped a slice of American cheese on a sizzling hamburger.

When is National Hamburger Day?

However, like numerous iconic foods, many people and restaurants claim the origin story. For example, a restaurant in Los Angeles called O’Dell’s placed the cheeseburger on their menu in 1928. It came smothered with chili – all for the price of a quarter. Kaelin’s Restaurant in Louisville, Kentucky claims they invented the cheeseburger in 1934. One record that gives the Humpty Dumpty Drive-In in Denver, CO bragging rights is the trademark they received in 1935 for the name “cheeseburger.” Another who applied for a trademark of that word was Gus Belt, the founder of Steak n’ Shake. Sometime in the 1930s he also applied for the trademark.

Despite all these claims, a couple of things are for sure. The cheeseburger checks all the marks for satisfying a craving, and the cheeseburger isn’t going anywhere!

Derby Gisclair

The section of New Orleans where Decatur Street splits off to the right to form North Peters Street shown below in an unattributed photograph from 1918 taken from the vantage point next to the Bazar Market at Dumaine and Decatur looking towards the Vegetable Market in the center background.

Notice the streets paved with massive sett stones which have shifted and settled over the years from the combined forces of nature and commercial traffic. Pedestrians certainly had to pay attention crossing the uneven streets in the area to avoid turning an ankle or losing their footing altogether and landing roughly in a heap among the horse and mule droppings.

The uneven streets and bustling carriage traffic don’t seem to be of concern to the five children standing in the middle of the street, four of whom are more interested in the photographer than their surroundings. The older girls is the only one in the group looking away, perhaps at the approaching wagon up the street.

Sometimes we romanticize the past to an unrealistic degree and this photograph would certainly bear that out.

Derby Gisclair

In an image that dates from 1910, cotton bales stacked on the wharves along the Mississippi River were still an important export crop for the city of New Orleans. Even as the city crept towards modern drainage, paved streets, and improvements in public education, New Orleans remained one of the largest exporters of cotton in the world.

Rebirth Brass Band EVERY Tuesday at Zony Mash!

Zony Mash is proud to be the home of Rebirth Brass Band EVERY Tuesday

Doors at 7pm, Show at 8pm

Whether seen on HBO’s Treme or at their legendary Tuesday night gig at The Maple Leaf, Grammy-winning Rebirth Brass Band is a true New Orleans institution. Formed in 1983 by the Frazier brothers, the band has evolved from playing the streets of the French Quarter to playing festivals and stages all over the world. While committed to upholding the tradition of brass bands, they’ve also extended themselves into the realms of funk and hip-hop to create their signature sound. “Rebirth can be precise whenever it wants to,” says The New York Times, “but it’s more like a party than a machine. It’s a working model of the New Orleans musical ethos: as long as everybody knows what they’re doing, anyone can cut loose.” In the wake of the sometimes- stringent competition amongst New Orleans brass bands, Rebirth is the undisputed leader of the pack, and they show no signs of slowing down

ANNOUNCING CULTURE COLLISION 12!
ANNUAL FREE ARTS & CULTURE SHOWCASE RETURNS IN 2022 AFTER A TWO-YEAR HIATUS

WWNO 89.9 FM and Jefferson Performing Arts Society are partnering to bring back Culture Collision! After a two-year pandemic hiatus, Culture Collision 12 returns on Wednesday, September 21, from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. at Jefferson Performing Arts Center in Metairie. The last Culture Collision event was held in August 2019.
Culture Collision is an annual showcase for nonprofit arts and cultural organizations in the New Orleans metro-area. Ranging from the city’s classic arts institutions to its resourceful contemporary newcomers, this happy hour event reflects the diversity of the region’s creative community. The event is free and open to the public—and for this “comeback year”, the fee for organizations to reserve a display table have been waived. Over 60 local arts and culture companies are expected to join, with several of the participating organizations presenting live entertainment.
“From its beginning in 2008, Culture Collision’s aim has been to introduce all kinds of art and cultural activity to people from all parts of the metro area,” said WWNO General Manager, Paul Maassen. “WWNO is delighted that Culture Collision 2022 will carry on this mission and highlight our region’s newest investment in the arts, the Jefferson Performing Arts Center.”
This beloved community arts event is making its debut in Jefferson Parish after over a decade in New Orleans, where it was held at renowned cultural venues such as The National World War Two Museum, The Contemporary Arts Center (CAC), The Ogden Museum, and New Orleans Museum of Art (NOMA).
In July 2022, Jefferson Performing Arts Society was named as the new managers of Jefferson Performing Arts Center. “Our hosting of Culture Collision aligns with our goal to build a wider array of presentations and programming at this gorgeous gem of a venue. We look forward to welcoming arts and cultural organizations of all genres and their audiences here in September to show them all that we have to offer and to let them know that our doors are always open to new opportunities and partnerships,” said Todd Simmons, General Manager of Jefferson Performing Arts Center and Executive Director of Jefferson Performing Arts Society.
Jefferson Performing Arts Center is located at 6400 Airline Drive near the former Zephyr Stadium, not far from the Saints training camp and next to LaSalle Park. Parking in the Jefferson Performing Arts Center adjacent lot is free. For more information visit www.culturenola.com or contact Amy Kirk Duvoisin at amy@jpas.org or 504-885-2000 ext. 212, or Ron Biava at 504-280-7001 or ron@wwno.org.

The Roosevelt New Orleans, A Waldorf Astoria Hotel will host the annual Storming of the Sazerac on Friday September 23, 2022 in the Blue Room. This one-of-a-kind celebration pays tribute to the empowered group of women who stormed the Sazerac Bar in 1949 demanding equality and a stiff drink. This event made the Sazerac Bar the first bar in New Orleans to allow women on days other than Mardi Gras. “Storming of the Sazerac” encompasses libations, cuisine and entertainment, including:

  • A ladies-only luncheon
  • Complimentary champagne
  • Pop-up fashion shop
  • Live entertainment
  • Juried best-dressed competition

Following the Blue Room festivities, our Reigning Spirit of the Sazerac will lead attendees in a second line to “storm” the world-renowned Sazerac Bar, where the spirited day continues with Sazerac cocktails in-hand.

Ladies are invited to dress in post-war New Orleans style, such as hats, veils, peep-toe shoes and gloves. Doors to the world famous Blue Room open at 12:45pm, and the celebration begins with the traditional ladies lunch at 1:00pm. Live entertainment will be provided, and the event will feature a fashion show showcasing vintage style with a best-dressed competition.

When the New Orleans City Council voted unanimously to rename Jefferson Davis Parkway in Mid-City to Norman C. In a new WYES-TV documentary, DR. NORMAN C. FRANCIS: A LEGACY OF LEADERSHIP, Dr. Francis will reflect on his monumental life in a one-on-one interview. Archival photos, video and interviews with Dr. Francis’ family, friends and colleagues will document his career of service and leadership.
