INNERGIZE DAY | DAY AFTER THE AUTUMNAL EQUINOX

Innergize Day on the day after the Autumnal Equinox offers an opportunity to relax and rejuvenate. This is a day for you!

Since fall has officially arrived, it’s time to shift gears. The fast pace of summer activities passes by now. Languid autumn days provide tranquil sunsets and peaceful moments. These are the times to focus on your personal well-being. Do things you enjoy that make you feel good about yourself. Let stress and worry fade away for the day.

The day is an excellent time to look inward. Whether you rejuvenate your spiritual connections or develop mindfulness, refocusing your energy can have huge benefits. After trying to cram every activity into a few short months, we sometimes lose focus. Fall allows us to take a deep breath and be more mindful of our bodies, spirits, and the world around us.

Corps to barge 36M gallons of freshwater a day to help areas facing saltwater contamination

Low flow in Mississippi River is allowing salt to threaten drinking water supplies up the river.

Unsafe levels of saltwater may reach many New Orleans-area drinking water intakes by mid-October, forcing officials to scramble for barges that will bring in fresh water from further up the Mississippi in hopes of avoiding contamination of local water supplies.

Gov. John Bel Edwards joined federal, state and local officials at a news conference Friday to explain how they were "making plans for a duration of an event and a severity of an event" that will exceed a similar saltwater intrusion in 1988.

Officials with the Army Corps of Engineers said they've taken the first steps to begin transporting 36 million gallons of river water to the area by barge every day for use by local utilities.

"We just executed the contract to get the initial capacity for 15 million gallons on site next week, and then we are rapidly moving through the Corps of Engineers to obtain more," said Col. Cullen Jones, commander of the Corps' New Orleans office. The barges will range in size from 100,000 gallons to 1 million gallons.

Next week, Edwards said, he will upgrade a declaration of emergency to ensure state agencies can respond to saltwater intrusion. He will also ask FEMA to issue a federal emergency declaration, which he said could help in getting federal funds to help pay for the response.

This is the timeline for the estimated travel of saltwater upriver towards different area water treatment plants. (Army Corps of Engineers)

Based on the most recent estimates, saltwater will reach Belle Chasse on Oct. 13, St. Bernard Parish's main water plant by Oct. 19, the Algiers water plant by Oct. 22, the Carrollton water plant by Oct. 28 and the East Jefferson Parish water plant by Oct. 29, Jones said.

Jones said the present flow of freshwater down the river is about 148,000 cubic feet per second, not strong enough to halt the northward flow of saltwater towards New Orleans. The current flow is only about 10% of what it is when the river is high.

"For us to get above 300,000 cubic feet per second to start pushing it back, we would need to see approximately 10 inches of precipitation across the entire Mississippi Valley," and that's unlikely, according to recent National Weather Service forecasts, Jones said.

Edwards noted it will be several weeks before saltwater will hit heavily populated communities and urged residents not to panic and cause runs on bottled water. He said state officials also have been in touch with stores to assure they restock quickly. Unlike the national shortage of toilet paper during the pandemic, he said, there is no lack of bottled water.

Louisiana Health Officer Joseph Kanter said local water systems will issue warnings if salt levels are predicted to go above 250 parts per million. That would pose a risk to individuals on low-sodium diets, those with high blood pressure, and pregnant women in their third trimester who are at risk of hypertension.

He said when levels are that high, bottled water should be used to make baby formula.

Kanter also confirmed that if saltwater does get into older parts of local water distribution systems, it could erode pipes and pose a risk for homes still served by lead pipes.

Jones said the barges would gather water upriver and deliver it to water treatment plants that will have installed reservoir barges. The fresher water will be mixed with the water already being removed from the river to lower the salt content to acceptable levels.

The barges must be cleaned to standards allowing water transport.

Edwards pointed out that the state also is seeking other solutions, including reverse-osmosis equipment for smaller water treatment plants.

"Nobody should leave here telling the public that the only thing that's happening is that we've contracted through the Corps of Engineers" for barges.

Concerns about the saltwater threat has had bottled water flying off the shelves at stores in Orleans and Jefferson parishes. But buying up bottled water is hurting the folks that really need it, said Patrick Harvey, Plaquemines' emergency preparedness director.

"The people that really need it in Venice and other parts of Plaquemines are having a hard time getting water," he said. "I compare what's happening to when people started buying all the toilet paper during the COVID (pandemic). They're stockpiling, but they're not impacted."

The leading edge of saltwater moving north in the river was at mile 66 above Head of Passes on Wednesday, just north of Alliance in Plaquemines Parish.

That's still 9 miles south of the water intake in Belle Chasse. The saltwater has already topped a saltwater sill at mile 63.8 that was designed to block its flow.

Jones said a dredge will begin work Sunday to increase the height and length of that sill to slow the movement of saltwater northward. The sill will be extended to cover 2,200 feet along the river bottom, with the sill top built to 30 feet below sea level, which is 25 feet higher than when it was originally completed in July.

However, to allow the shipping of agricultural crops from the Midwest this fall and winter, a 620-foot-wide notch will be cut in its center, allowing oceangoing vessels to move single file up or downriver.

The Belle Chasse water plant produces 7.5 million gallons of water a day, while St. Bernard's water treatment plant produces 12 million gallons a day.

New Orleans' Carrollton water treatment bank produces 148 million gallons of drinking water a day and its Algiers plant produces 12.5 million gallons a day.

Both Mayor LaToya Cantrell and Jefferson Parish President Cynthia Lee Sheng issued their own emergency declarations to provide more authority during the saltwater emergency for their staffs.

In Plaquemines Parish, officials are working to connect parish water lines to those in Jefferson Parish and New Orleans, Harvey said. It also continues to seach for three reverse osmosis units that would be installed at lower parish water plants to remove saltwater.

"They're hard to come by," Harvey said. "We've been searching throughout the United States."

For Venice, he said, the effects of the saltwater intrusion can already be tasted.

“It’s salty,” Harvey said. “It’s like going to the beach and getting a mouth full of water from the Gulf.”

It's not unusual for saltwater to move upriver and threaten water supplies during Midwest drought years, said Ioannis Georgiou, a geologist with the Water Institute of the Gulf.

A portion of the lower river was dredged to 45 feet below sea level in 1988. In anticipation, in 1987, the Corps announced that it had awarded a contract to a local company to build barge moorings for freshwater offloading near the Plaquemines Parish's East and West Pointe a la Hache and Boothville water treatment plants.

And in late 1988, saltwater was tracked as far north as the river's Carrollton Bend in Kenner. That year, it moved upriver more quickly than the Corps' efforts to build a blocking sill.

The dredging of the channel to 50 feet below sea level in 2022 helped water from the Gulf move northward through the lowest part of the river, but even in New Orleans and St. Bernard Parish, the river bottom already was as much as 200 feet below sea level.

Georgiou pointed out that the bottom of the river’s channel is below sea level to at least Baton Rouge. Saltwater from the Gulf is heavier than freshwater and will move upriver in that channel unless forced out by the pressure resulting from the flow of lighter freshwater.

“if there’s nothing to hold it back, which is the case now, it’s going to keep going upriver until it stabilizes and the forces (of freshwater flowing south and saltwater flowing north) are balanced,” he said.

The bigger question is whether the saltwater will get close to the surface, where the public water supply intakes are located, often at 12 feet below sea level. That will determine whether New Orleans and Jefferson Parish will need additional water barged in to protect their water supplies.

This year's low river problems are also likely linked to failures by the Corps to require closure of a variety of relatively new pathways for freshwater out of the lower river, including the new Neptune Pass, said Sean Duffy Sr., executive director of the Big River Coalition, which advocates on river issues on behalf of shipping interests.

Duffy said saltwater is actually using these new pathways to enter the river, speeding its flow upriver during low river periods, just as they have sped the exit of freshwater from the main river channel during other times of the year.

About the Exhibition

In 1776, many colonists made a great leap to a new idea: maybe they could do without monarchy and aristocracy. If they could unite with one another, “the common people” of the colonies might form a more equal society and government. American Democracy: A Great Leap of Faith, a traveling exhibition from the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service, examines the continuing evolution of America’s experiment in a government “of, by, and for the people.” The exhibition will be on view at The Historic New Orleans Collection from June 17, 2023, to October 8, 2023. Admission is free.

Drawn from the permanent exhibition of the same name at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History, American Democracy explores the challenges and triumphs that generations of Americans encountered as they sought to create a government based on the sovereignty of the people. It explores the history of citizen participation, debate, and compromise from the nation’s formation to today.

Featuring engaging multimedia experiences, immersive design, and artifacts from the Smithsonian Institution, state historical organizations, and The Historic New Orleans Collection, American Democracy demonstrates that self-government relies on every citizen’s active participation in the quest to form a “more perfect union.” Exhibition sections explore the origins of American democracy, the changing identity of eligible voters, the machinery of democracy, the right to petition and protest beyond the ballot, and the rights and responsibilities of citizens.

American Democracy is sponsored locally by the 2023 Bienville Circle, J.P.Morgan Private Bank, and WDSU-TV.

A companion exhibition, “Yet She Is Advancing”: New Orleans Women and the Right to Vote, 1878–1970, is on view through November 5, 2023. Expanding on a 2020 virtual exhibition on THNOC’s website, the exhibition tells a decades-long story through objects, images, documents, and interactive displays—and through the words of the New Orleans women who for nearly 100 years persisted in their struggle to obtain the vote

TIME/TV: Sunday at noon at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wisc. The game will be broadcast on FOX with an announcing team of Kenny Albert and former Saints linebacker Jonathan Vilma with Shannon Spake on the sideline. The WWL radio team is Mike Hoss and Deuce McAllister.

LINE TREND: The line at Caesars Sportsbook hadn’t budged an inch until Thursday. Throughout the week, it had been at Green Bay -2 – even after the Saints defeated the Panthers on Monday Night Football, but someone with a ton of money apparently likes New Orleans, as it has dropped to -1. As of late Saturday, the money line for the Saints is +100 and is -120 for Green Bay. The over/under total is 42, down from 43 earlier this week. What did I pick in this one? Check out my NFL Week 3 picks column to find out.

WEATHER FORECAST: Just like last Monday in Charlotte, nearly perfect. It should be around 68 degrees at game time and remain there throughout the day. It is expected to be partly cloudy with winds around 10 mph.

UNIFORMS: The Saints will be wearing all white, including white jerseys with black numbers (and their traditional gold helmets with the fleur-de-lis). They also will be wearing white pants and white socks.

Meanwhile, the Packers will wear their traditional forest green jerseys with white numbers and gold pants with green socks. As always, they will wear gold helmets with the Green Bay “G” inside of an oval.

REFEREE: Brad Rogers is the lead official and has been in that role since 2019. New Orleans is 3-4 all time when he officiates their games, while Green Bay is 4-0. This will be the second time he has done a Saints-Packers game with the other instance coming Sept. 27, 2020, in an empty Superdome during the pandemic.

Laugh and cry with these lovable Louisiana ladies who are “as delicate as magnolias but as tough as steel" as they support each other through the challenges of life.

This tear-jerking comedy is set in a beauty salon in the fictional northwestern Louisiana parish of Chinquapin, based on the writer’s hometown of Natchitoches, Louisiana, and the death of his sister. The play spans three years in the lives of Truby, Shelby, Annelle, M’Lynn, and Clairee, whose heartaches and hilarious attitudes pay tribute to southern women’s survival skills. Experience the eternally relevant 1987 Broadway hit drama that became a beloved movie in 1989 starring Sally Field, Shirley MacClaine, Olympia Dukakis, Julia Roberts, Dolly Parton, and Darryl Hannah. With country fried quips such as “I’m not crazy—I’ve just been in a very bad mood for forty years,” “I have a strict policy that nobody cries alone in my presence,” and “Don’t try to get on my good side—I no longer have one” …you will cry, laugh, and be Southern comforted by these warm, wise women.

Which country is the world's largest producer and exporter of coffee beans?

Brazil

Brazil takes pride in being the world's largest producer and exporter of coffee beans. Nestled in South America, this vibrant country is renowned for its rich coffee culture, with vast plantations stretching across its landscape. Coffee is deeply ingrained in Brazilian traditions and has played a pivotal role in the nation's history, shaping its economy and identity.

Brazil's ideal climatic conditions and diverse geography provide the perfect environment for coffee cultivation. The country's vast territory encompasses several distinct regions, each offering unique microclimates suitable for different coffee varieties. The prominent coffee-growing regions include Minas Gerais, São Paulo, Paraná, and Espírito Santo, among others.

The coffee industry in Brazil is characterized by both small family-owned farms and large-scale commercial plantations. These farms employ advanced agricultural practices, combining traditional knowledge with modern technology. Meticulous care is taken during the cultivation, harvesting, and processing of coffee beans to ensure the production of superior-quality coffee.

Brazilian coffee is predominantly of the Arabica variety, known for its delicate flavors and aroma. The beans are hand-picked when they reach their optimal ripeness, ensuring a consistent quality. Post-harvest, the coffee cherries undergo various processing methods, including the widely used "natural" or "dry" method, which involves drying the cherries in the sun, and the "washed" or "wet" method, which utilizes water to remove the outer layers.

The significance of coffee in Brazil's economy cannot be overstated. The coffee industry contributes significantly to the national GDP, generating employment opportunities for millions of Brazilians. The government, along with various coffee associations, implements policies and initiatives to support and promote sustainable coffee production practices, ensuring the long-term viability of the industry.

Brazil's dominance in the global coffee market is evident through its exports. The country ships coffee beans to every corner

Pratt, in his return to the starting lineup, led the offensive attack as he went 18-for-23 for 190 with two passing touchdowns and one rushing score. He also ran for 33 yards on nine carries. Makhi Hughes totaled 29 yards rushing on his five carries. Arnold Barnes was the squad's leader with 71 yards rushing. which included a 65-yard carry. Lawrence Keys III led the team with his four catches for 77 yards and a pair of scores. Yulkeith Brown also had four catches for 55 yards with a long of 34. Chris Brazzell II picked up four catches for 42 yards. Dontae Fleming had three catches for 25 yards. Jesus Machado had 10 tackles and an interception. Bailey Despanie totaled four tackles. Darius Hodges recorded four tackles and a stop for loss. Jared Small had four tackles including a sack. Keith Cooper Jr. totaled a sack on his two tackles. Devean Deal also picked up a sack. Jarius Monroe, Lance Robinson and Gabe Liu all recorded an interception.

Tulane scored first as Shi'Keem Laister returned a low punt for a touchdown at the 10:32 mark of the first quarter to put the Green Wave up 7-0. The returned punt touchdown started on a bad snap that went over the punter's head forcing a hurried attempt from near his goal line.

The Green Wave added a field goal to the lead as Valentino Ambrosio knocked in a 32-yard field to put the score at 10-0 at the 1:30 mark of the opening quarter.

After an interception from Monroe, Pratt connected with Keys on the 40-yard score just before the end of the quarter to put the score at 17-0 with 12 seconds remaining in the first. The touchdown pass was the 73rd in the career of Pratt to break the all-time school record previous held by Patrick Ramsey.

After another forced turnover by the Tulane defense, an interception by Lance Robinson, set up a short field, which the Green Wave offense quickly capitalized as Pratt connected with Keys on his second touchdown pass of the game to put Tulane up 24-0 with 9:08 remaining in the second quarter.

Following a Nicholls touchdown, the Tulane offense kept its foot on the gas and scored just before the break as Ambrosio knocked in a 45-yard field goal to put the Green Wave up 27-7 at the half.

A Tulane interception by Machado resulted in a short field and one-yard touchdown run from Pratt to put Tulane up 33-7 with 4:01 remaining in the third quarter after the failed two-point attempt.

Ambrosio made his third field goal of the game, this one from 31 yards, to put the Green Wave up 36-7 in what would be the final score.

Next, the Tulane football team keeps the homestand going and hosts UAB in the AAC opener at Yulman Stadium at 11 a.m. The game will also be shown live on ESPN2.

NATIONAL CHERRIES JUBILEE DAY | SEPTEMBER 24

On September 24th National Cherries Jubilee Day serves up a tasty dessert. Smitten with this simply elegant dessert, cherry lovers celebrate this sweet holiday with delight.

Auguste Escoffier receives the credit for the Cherries Jubilee recipe. Since he knew Queen Victoria’s fondness for cherries, Escoffier prepared the dish for one of her Jubilee celebrations. However, his original method didn’t include ice cream. Instead, the chef poached the cherries in a simple syrup and poured warm brandy over them. Then just before serving, dramatically set the alcohol aflame.

The 500-Block of Canal Street – A Different View

Another view of the 500-block of Canal Street from a different perspective. Slocomb, Baldwin Hardware is now prominent in the middle of the block. The two buildings on the corner are new construction from the prior image I posted. Bob-tail streetcars help date this photograph as circa 1880s.

Of interest in the neutral ground on the left is the Belknap Fountain. Erected in 1871 where Chartres and Camp Streets meet on Canal Street, the fountain was less about being a water feature, although it did offer a drinking fountain, and was primarily an advertising medium. The cast iron pavilion contained an animated display of boats and birds, powered by water and illuminated by gas light. Removable glass panels could be purchased for advertisements. The smaller building is a starter hut for the streetcar line.

In the center is the building housing Slocomb, Baldwin & Company Hardware established by Albert Baldwin and Cuthbert Slocomb. It would later become Stratton Baldwin in the 1970s.

Then we see the original K&B – Katz & Barnett Notions at 86 Canal Street which also contained a number of medical offices, the Taylor, Hadden & Company clothing warehouse, the North & Company wholesale fancy goods and stationers (later North, Brush, & Mason), Loeb, Simon & Company dry goods, and of course Katz & Barnett during this time.

On the far right is B.& G. Moses Photographic Gallery at the corner of Camp and Canal Street. It had been around since right after the Civil War. It was destroyed by fire in 1921.

Snag Boats

For this Steamboat Saturday we will explore the world of snag boats such as the one seen below, the David Tipton. Like so many steamboats, the David Tipton began life under another name, the Colonel A. Mackenzie in 1900.

There is perhaps no more frightening sound to be heard anywhere on a steamboat that when the boat comes into sudden and unexpected contact with a snag – an unseen submerged object that was capable of ripping open a large hole in the boat’s wooden hull. From the early days of the maritime industry, harbors have been patrolled by smaller non-motorized craft looking for snags and pulling them out of the water. Often the best they could hope for was to tow it to the shoreline and leave it there, waiting for the Mississippi mud to surround and sink the snag out of harm’s way.

Steamboats were soon adapted for this purpose. Notice the large crane on the bow of the David Tipton below. A pair of shallow canoes hang off the stern ready to deploy the crew to assist in securing the crane’s chain and pulley system to the snag, after which it would be disposed of onshore.

The David Tipton operated as a snag boat for the U.S. Engineers from 1904 until 1920. She was sold and converted into an excursion boat.

Tight Squeeze

People often comment about how large many of the vintage automobiles were and how difficult it must have been to navigate along the streets of New Orleans. Well, imagine the difficulties for the streetcar operators in the French Quarter as evidenced by this image from 1944 of the Desire streetcar inching down Royal Street past the Monteleone Hotel. The hotel was the state campaign headquarters of Jimmie Davis who would eventually win the first of two terms in 1944.

Clayton General Store

 ·

RC cola (Royal Crown Cola) was founded in 1905 by Claud A Hatcher. In 1903 Hatcher purchased a large amount of Coca-Cola syrup from salesman Columbus Roberts. A conflict erupted when Robert’s would not budge on the price. Hatcher felt since he had purchased such a large volume he deserved a good deal. Hatcher felt he won the battle when he said he would never purchase from Coca-Cola again. He set up shop in the basement of his family owned grocery store and was determined to make his own recipe. Did you know this is also where Nehi sodas came from? In the 1950’s an RC Cola and a Moon Pie was known as the working man’s lunch in the American south. Here at the Clayton General Store it’s always a good time for an RC Cola and a Moon Pie!

It’s Fettuccine Frenzy at Middendorf’s Manchac & Middendorf’s Slidell! Every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in September, handmade paper-thin fettuccine is on the menu.

This mouth-watering dish is served with your choice of classic Alfredo or Marinara Sauce and topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese with optional add-ons of shrimp, crabmeat and chicken.

  • Fettuccine with Alfredo Sauce topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese 15.25
  • Fettuccine with Marinara Sauce topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese 15.25
  • Optional add-ons:
  • Shrimp 10.95
  • Crabmeat 9.95
  • Chicken 6.95
  • Side of Fettuccine topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese 9.50

Fun Facts:

  • Our handmade, paper-thin fettuccine was a guest favorite at Bella Luna in the French Quarter. Bella Luna was a fine dining restaurant owned and operated by Horst and Karen Pfeifer. It closed due to Hurricane Katrina and never reopened. The memory of Bella Luna lives on through Fettuccine Frenzy at Middendorf’s. Same Pasta. Same Taste. None of the Fancy.
  • Middendorf’s Owner and European Master Chef Horst Pfeifer makes the fettuccine from scratch which consists solely of Semolina flour and eggs. It’s a very time consuming process to make the fettuccine so paper-thin, but it’s definitely worth it.
  • Fettuccine is available all day (lunch and dinner).
  • Our full menu is also available.
  • Uncooked fettuccine is also available for purchase to make a quick meal at home.

We hope you can join us for Fettuccine Frenzy — Every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in September!

The purpose of the event is to raise funds to support breast cancer research at Tulane Cancer Research and provide a space for survivors, supporters and their friends and family to celebrate their victories over the disease.

Krewe de Pink’s annual Prom takes place on Saturday, September 30, 2023 at the Generations Hall in New Orleans, LA. Dressed in their favorite Prom styles or pink bling, attendees will enjoy a night of live music, a unique auction, fun raffles, a dance performance and a special tribute highlighting Breast Cancer Survivors who attend the event.

The Backstreet Cultural Museum, the local institution dedicated to preserving the cultural heritage of New Orleans, will host a celebration to mark an expansion into an adjoining room. On Saturday, September 30, the museum will host an event featuring never-before-seen exhibits and musical entertainment.

The expansion celebration will take place from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Attendees can enjoy music spun by the museum’s own DJ Du, while a unique Black Indian performance at 4 p.m. is set to be a highlight of the event. Additionally, Big Chief Victor Harris, known as the Spirit of Fi Yi Yi, will deliver a message to the crowd, underscoring the significance of this expansion.

This expansion celebration comes on the heels of the museum’s first anniversary in its new home, marking a year of continued growth and success. Initially founded in 1999 by photographer Sylvester “Hawk” Francis, a recipient of the 2004 Best Of The Beat Heartbeat Award, the museum has served as a vital showcase for his work and the broader cultural scene of New Orleans. After opening its doors in the Blandin Funeral Home in 1999, the museum has persevered through the years, even surviving the challenges posed by Hurricane Ida, which damaged its former location.

Philip Melancon

Mancini’s music was the soundtrack of mid-century Hollywood. He contributed to over 250 movies and scores of T.V. shows. To name a few: Peter Gunn and The Pink Panther in the 50’s, Breakfast at Tiffany’s and Two for the Road in the 60’s, Darling Lili in the 70’, and Victor / Victoria in the 80’s. The focus of Mancini by Moonlight is the lyrical songs of Mancini. Although this giant of American music was recognized for his sweeping scores, here we feature his songs with lyrics. Moon River, Days of Wine and Roses, Charade, It Had Better Be Tonight and such. It’s a rich library of exceptional melodies coupled with the masterful lyrics of Johnny Mercer, Leslie Bricusse and Jay Livingston.

Mancini by Moonlight: the cabaret, will be performed by the seasoned duo of Heidi and Phil Melancon. Joined to their hips the ever so hip David Cook and Alden Hagardorn.

See you under the twinkling stars of Monkey Hill.

Final Four Rematch: LSU WBB To Face Virginia Tech in SEC/ACC Challenge

Story by Zack Nagy

© Provided by LSU Country on FanNation

LSU will host Virginia Tech in a Final Four rematch on November 30 at 8 p.m. CT as a part of the ACC/SEC Challenge.

The Tigers and Hokies met last season in the Final Four as LSU came from behind in the fourth quarter to clinch a spot in the national championship game. The Tigers trailed by nine to start the fourth quarter but outscored the Hokies by 16 in the final quarter to claim LSU’s first national championship game berth. LSU defeated Iowa two days later for the national championship.

LSU will enter the season with multiple players returning from the program’s first ever national championship team along with a talented list of newcomers that include the nation’s No. 1 rated recruiting class and the top two players from this year’s transfer portal.

Forward Angel Reese headlines LSU’s returners as the defending Most Outstanding Player from the Final Four. She set the NCAA record with 34 double-doubles throughout the season as a dominant scorer and rebounder. Reese led the SEC in both scoring (23.0 ppg) and rebounding (15.4 rpg).

Guard Flau’jae Johnson is another returning starter for the Tigers who earned SEC Freshman of the Year. In her first year of college basketball, Johnson averaged 11.0 points per game and 5.9 rebounds per game. Guard Kateri Poole started in LSU’s final five games throughout the championship run, bringing a defensive physicality to the court while having a knack to knock down big shots for the Tigers.

LSU will also bring back contributors like forward Sa’Myah Smith who was named to the SEC All-Freshman and guard Last-Tear Poa. Both Smith and Sa’Myah played critical and productive minutes off the bench in the national championship win over Iowa.

The Tigers top-rated incoming freshmen class is headlined by guard Mikaylah Williams who was named the 2023 Morgan Wooten National Player of the Year as the top high school player. Forward Aalyah Del Rosario, the nation’s No. 7 rated player, played in the McDonald’s All-American game with Williams and the Tigers also bring in freshmen guard Angelica Velez who was named Tennessee’s Division II-A Miss Basketball and guard Janae Kent.

LSU was active in the transfer portal, adding guard Hailey Van Lith and forward Aneesah Morrow who were ranked No. 1 and 2, respectively, in ESPN’s transfer portal rankings. Van Lith averaged 19.7 points, 4.5 assists and 3.2 rebounds last season, earning AP All-America honorable mention honors while leading Louisville to the Elite Eight. Van Lith and Iowa’s Caitlin Clark are the only two players in the country who averaged at least 19 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists throughout the year. Morrow was a lethal scorer (24.7 ppg) and rebounder (12.2 rpg) at DePaul. Her and Reese were the only two players in the country to rank inside the top 10 in the nation in both scoring and rebounding.

Exciting news from the Office of Lt. Governor and the Office of Tourism! We're thrilled to announce the stunning new design for our float as we gear up for our 3rd year in the 2024 Rose Parade in Pasadena, California.

This year’s theme is “Celebrating a World of Music: The Universal Language." Our float features a larger-than-life Mardi Gras jester, fleur de lis, second-line inspired umbrellas, and lots of purple, green, and gold.
